i had been seeing posts about the baklava and been wanting to try for sometime. It is located inside the Balboa International Market. When you enter, it will be on the right side. It all looked promising. They charge by weight. They also had dubai chocolate. Decided to try the dark, milk and white chocolate and a small piece of pistachio baklava. The baklava was soggy from the syrup. No crunch factor. The filling tasted bland. The dubai chocolate was really hard since it was refrigerated so it was hard to bite into. After letting it sit out, i did not like it at all since they all had a weird after taste for me. These were a little pricey also. $7.99 each for the small Dubai chocolates. In total, paid around $28 for everything and i felt that was a bit pricey. Unfortunately, i Probably won't return since my palette didn't like anything. read more

Finally got the chance to step foot into this shop and I'm so glad I did! It's located inside Balboa International Market, just to the right when you walk in. There were so many pastries to choose from- it took me a minute to take it all in! I loved seeing Dubai chocolate and even spotted a Dubai chocolate brownie cake that seriously caught my eye. I didn't grab it this time (trying not to go too wild since I broke my lil sugar streak today), but I need to come back for it. I ended up trying two pastries: the pistachio chocolate one and a walnut one. The pistachio one? 10/10- easily my favorite. It had rich chocolate in the middle, chopped nuts mixed in, and this reddish, cherry-like layer that added the perfect final touch. So flavorful without being overly sweet. The walnut one was also really good- light, airy, and more on the subtle side. Flavorful without being overly sweet. A nice balance to the richer pistachio one. I run into this little baklava shop inside of Balboa International Market. Amazing baklava! They have more traditional looking desserts beyond the cut baklavas. We have had some baklavas from other Turkish baklava shops in the County, but this one is the best so far. Of course, much richer and better than the pre-packaged ones we can buy at Costco or Trader Joe's. Lot's of pistachios, which I understand is more Turkish style. This is the only place that I have seen in San Diego that has fresh selection of Turkish Delights, which I was so excited to find! We can buy as much Turkish Delights as we want, they will cut it and sell it by weight. It is a bit more pricey, compared to baklava. Such a little gem for Turkish desserts! $6 dollars for this is crazyyyyyy. Nothing is made on site, everything is shipped of them from God knows where. Soggy, no crunch even on the top phyllo dough, artificial taste most likely from the rose water in the syrup. I think they used to carry better baklava in the past. Decided to try this out as it is closer than the east county location for the viral Dubai chocolate. First off, no prices. Husband had to ask for prices on their Dubai chocolate. Server seemed a bit annoyed. There were 3 available, 1 small round chocolate, and two bars. The largest of the Dubai chocolate bar was $24.99. Very expensive for two milka bars ($5 each at world market) slathered with pistachio paste. You can do the math on the price difference. So basically, like a chocolate sandwich. I'm glad I was able to try this out because I can definitely say I would rather visit the other location than purchase locally. read more

Behind the registers - narrow and snug area. There were a ton of selections for individual purchase of baklava. Honestly, although I didn't select any chocolate ones all the ones I picked (different shapes and etc) tasted very similar. At this location, the square ones in my picture would be the selection of choice. Ok, the square one with the white powder on top was the best... there was a soft layer of similar to bread pudding texture and taste. There didn't seem to be a distinct difference between the others except appearance. Baklava was good but I've had better. I wanted to try the Turkish delights and they didn't sell them individually, kind of obligated to spend more money by the pound and buy the prepackaged delights. And within these prepackage delights are different flavors delights so choose wisely don't just grab and go. It comes with a pack of three and my favorite was the middle one, reddish/pink with crumbs of pistachio. It had a good berry flavor I was looking for in a Turkish delight. The other two I didn't care for. I haven't had much delights in my life and mainly those preboxed ones sold at the store (fruit delights by Liberty orchards) so my baseline of a delight is a bit tainted. Mrbaklavasd is located INSIDE the Balboa International Market, and it's definitely worth checking out! I initially saw another baklava store right next to the grocery store but after walking in, realized I was at the wrong spot. Mrbalkavasd offers Turkish style baklava and Turkish delight. Turkish delight ($13 a lb.) - They had a lot of variety here, and the worker here mentioned that it's imported from Turkey. All the ones I tried here were extremely fresh (soft and chewy, not hard) and tasted great. Turkish baklava ($15 a lb.) - I love pistachio so focused on getting their pistachio baklava as well as their pistachio rolls. Everything tasted incredible, especially the pistachio rolls, which were filled with crushed pistachios wrapped in phyllo pastry and soaked in sweet honey syrup. Overall I was really impressed with how fresh both the baklava and Turkish delight were. Pricing is reasonable for both products and they have a lot of variety. Too many to choose from and I don't know which one to get, I don't really know which is which so I just grab the prepackaged ones and my daughter ask for some Dubai Chocolate which she heard from TikTok that it's good, I think it's a little dense for me but my daughter love it, I grab the assorted baklava without asking which is which and then I pick up some up some Turkish Delight, some are too sweet and some that are too chewy but I like some of them, my favorite is the rose petal ones, this is a Middle Eastern store, the ambience is like when you go to a souk in Middle East, lots of different items from the middle eastern country are for sale here. The Pastries and confections is really delicious; their eclairs are truly best I've ever had. But! BUT! Their pastries and confections are CRAZY expensive. Like I got this "Dubai chocolate bar" and it's the size of a Cadbury bar, and it's $10 bucks for ONE Bar. It's delicious, but I don't know about $10 delicious. However the quality is there. If I could give negative stars I would. Number one the young girl who was behind the counter wasn't friendly at all. She was awkward and I would say rude. Number two if you are going to charge $70 for two boxes one is baklava and second one Turkish delight at least make sure what you sell is fresh and eatable. Baklava is drenched in syrup so much that it is soggy and not eatable. Turkish delight is stale to the point that it all went to the garbage as soon as we opened it. We used to shop here all the time. Baklava used to be nice and flaky. Turkish delight used to be not prepackaged and you could choose what flavor you want and it was always soooo fresh. Don't be fooled by the beautiful display. I haven't been here in a few years and was very disappointed. I ordered a small tray with a variety of pieces for $35 and can't imagine how long it was sitting in that display. The phyllo layers were a soggy, mushy mess. I got the imported Turkish baklava twice. The first time it smelled rancid - likely old butter. The second time it didn't smell rancid, but gave me a very upset stomach. There will not be a third time. Instead of having 50 kinds of crappy bought in stuff they should make three kinds of baklava all day long from scratch. Located inside the Balboa International Market, I was in Baklava heaven. The customer service was awesome and they were very helpful in helping me decide what to order! I ordered various pistachio baklavas and turkish delights. The baklavas were flaky, airy and tasted awesome. But the clear winner from this place were the turkish delights. I ordered the rose and pomegranate flavored turkish delights and still dreaming about how good they were. If I knew they were this good I would have ordered more! I spent a good $50 on baklava and Turkish delights since they charge by the weight of your order. But everything I ordered was delicious and well worth the price! Hidden inside of Balboa International Market is an tiny unassuming Baklava shop. The selection is large and some items varies daily. I've never been a big baklava fan, but I do enjoy them from time to time. Many places where you can find baklava on the menus usually have the very basic kinds. It wasn't until I stumbled upon Mr Baklava that I learned about the many different baklavas that I'd never been exposed to. Mr Baklava sells the larges variety of baklava I've seen ever! Best part, it's by weight so you can get one, two, or a few of each one that catches your eyes. Since finding Mr Baklava, I've been indulging in baklava regularly and now have been converted into a baklava lover. The girls working there are always supper friendly and helpful in explaining the differences of each baklava. Go get your baklava fix there and you won't regret it. read more

We got a pound of Turkish (as they claim!) pistachio baklava two days ago. It's one of the worst "Turkish" baklava I have eaten in my 46 years of life. Believe me I have eaten a lot of baklava as a Turkish man both in Turkiye and USA. We got baklava from this store before and it was pretty good. I am guessing that they changed their supplier (it was MODA baklava before) because this is not Turkish baklava. It tasted bad and it was not fresh. I am even suspicious of the pistachio in it. I have seen people using roasted peas instead of pistachio and this baklava most probably contains peas because there's no pistachio flavor in it. My recommendation: STAY AWAY! read more

Yum!!!!! I tried every kind of Turkish delight and they were all delicious. Amongst three people, we split the lokum. Each one of us had our own favorite, but mine were the one covered in pistachios and the white with red in the middle (the two pictured in the middle). My husband loved the one covered in malt balls, although I believed that one to taste the least authentic. Finally, my friend loved the rose flavored and fig lokum. Mr. Baklava is a Middle Eastern pastry shop hidden inside the Balboa International Market. There are at least 30 different kinds of exquisite pastries! Each one looks especially tempting, like a mouse falling into a cheese jar for my sweet-toothed boyfriend. Baklava is sold by weight ($17.99/lbs), so you can mix and match as you please, and buying just one or two is totally doable! Although the pastries look small, the filling is compact. The Napoleon cake is very famous, and we blindly picked two baklavas, one with green pistachio flavor and the other tasted like walnut or pecan, both with a very nutty taste! The outer layer is particularly crunchy, while the inside has a crushed nut texture. It's fantastic! What's worth mentioning is that it's not too sweet! Many Middle Eastern pastries are like they are soaked in syrup/oil, but this one is only half sweet! I have to praise the Napoleon cake, the layers are so crispy! The cream is sufficient but not heavy, and there are some nuts scattered on top. It was difficult for me to eat as it was quite high, but it made me feel happy. But it must be eaten the same day, or else it won't be crispy the next day. read more

I keep going to this place for hopes that I will get good quality of baklava but I keep getting disappointed. My third time still no charm. It's not fresh. Baklava has to be a crunchy on the top layer and a bit mushy inside. Their baklava is mushy all the way because it has sat on the counter or wherever they store them for days.
