Bud's is located in what I would describe as an office park. Not exactly a place to find awesome Cajun food. Our server was fast, attentive, and personable. The restaurant is clean and feels like a family or a mom & pop place. Everything was well prepared and seasoned. Definitely eat here if you're in San Diego and want Cajun cuisine.
Good Louisiana style food. Jambalaya rice was perfectly seasoned. Mardi Gras pasta was delicious too. Service was adequate but nothing special. The restaurant is in a business park so parking was easy during non-working hours.
Finally got to try Bud's breakfast and it doesn't disappoint! Their flavors are just as amazing in the morning as they are for dinner. Their flavors menu is concise and has choices for sweet, savory, simple or complex. The drip coffee is good and they even serve the beignets in the morning as well. With always friendly staff and clean dining room, what's not to love about this place? Definitely worth you time to try something unique and different in San Diego.
I came here on a Wednesday for lunch with a party of 3. We didn't have a reservation but were able to be seated right away. There's parking lots at the front and back of the restaurant and plenty of street parking. I've been coming here for years and I always get the crawfish etouffee. It's savory and delicious and a must try. I tried a few new things this time; the alligator sausage and fried pickles, fried catfish plate, and Mardi Gras pasta. The sausage was pretty tasty though the fried pickles were just alright. It seemed like I was eating mostly batter. The catfish was fried perfectly and had a nice crunch. I was expecting a little more from the pasta, it was good but nothing very notable. For dessert we always get the beignets. So fluffy and always warm. The strawberry sauce it came with was great and not too tart. Service was good, our food came out in a timely manner. I'm still definitely going to be coming back and will hopefully try more new dishes as everything always looks so good.
My wife and daughter found out about Bud's by doing a Google search of the best restaurants in San Diego. August 2nd in my Brithday and so they decided to take me out for dinner tonight August 1. My wife is from Louisiana and so going to Bud's was gonna be an evaluation as to whether they have that authentic Louisiana flavor profile. All I can say is AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING . From the food to the service, everything was AMAZING! Our waiter for the evening was Eddie and he was definitely attentive and made our night so enjoyable. Thanks Bud's we will definitely be back again and again and again !you guys are on my Top 3 of favorite places to eat in San Diego.
Bud's is always a solid choice. Fresh and authentic Cajun food in SD. You can't really go wrong with anything on the menu but I'm partial to the soft shell crab (plate or po boy; I don't discriminate) and high marks for the Bourbon Street Shrimp. Friendly service, cozy setting and do yourself a favor: SAVE ROOM FOR BEIGNETS!
This month's team lunch was held at Bud's Louisiana Café Fried catfish was half a catfish. Loved the bold catfish flavor and the corn meal batter added a slightly salty flavor. Very good dish. Fries were fluffy and had a tasty fried potato flavor. I liked the seasoning which had a hint of sweetness and a hint of spicy flavor. On a previous visit I tried the boneless beef short ribs rubbed in house-made Creole seasoning; slowly roasted and braised in red wine. Served with meunière sauce. Beef was tender like my pot roast made in a slow cooker on low heat for 8 hours. Flavor was delicious. Fries were crispy on the outside and were heavily seasoned. I liked the flavor but I needed a ton of water afterwards. French bread from Paris Bakery had a crunchy outside and soft inside. Loved the light flavor. Server was friendly and provided very good service.
Been a while since we first came here. The po boy and fried catfish still hit! That sautéed green beans are so good I couldn't stop eating. Personally the crawfish etouffee was a bit salty to me so next time I'm going to try the LaCombe special or some of the pasta dishes! Service is always top notch here. They accommodated me with a side of the green beans even they aren't even on the menu. What else can you ask for! And that's why this place is always packed! Happy for them and will be back!
It's been a while since we've been to Bud's. I'm happy to report that Bud's never disappoints! The food is excellent - tasty, flavorful and the portions are generous. The Catfish St. Charles was delicious - nicely seasoned (not chili hot) blackened catfish accompanied by perfectly cooked, crispy green beans and rice. The crawfish etouffee was lip smacking good. Both plates were wiped clean. We got freshly fried beignets for dessert. It is served with strawberry coulis. The perfect end to a perfect meal. The staff are friendly and efficient. The restaurant is simply decorated with- the food is the star of the show.
Transported back to New Orleans! Hands down the restaurant to go to if you've got a craving for Cajun/Lousiana cuisine- gumbo,crawfish etoufee, poboys, beignets. Service was also on point from Nicole. I came during busy lunch hour, the place was packed. I didn't have to wait long to get served, receive my delicious food, etc. With the limited lunch hour that I had. Will definitely come back for more. Highly recommended, you won't regret it. Best crawfish you will get this side of the coast!
I have a regular craving for shrimp and grits, and I love most other New Orleans style cuisine, so this place has been on my list for a while. It's in an unassuming location in a business park, but don't hold that against them (though they could do well in a walkable city center location!) It's not often you see a selection of half a dozen or more Abita beer varieties! I would have liked to have tried everything. We got a bowl of gumbo, a plate of jambalaya with andouille sausage, and shrimp and grits. Everything was very good, but the grits were the highlight. My son eats plain and they made him a chicken breast that he devoured. And the pecan parfait. The waitress was friendly. Will be back! Next time I want to try the voodoo pasta! And another Abita of course.
Found this place on yelp on our drive back home from San Diego. We got here about 11:30am and it was fairly empty, with some tables occupied. The inside is small but they also have patio seating available. As 12pm rolled around there were 2 large tables that came in, so it got busy and louder inside. The ambience was new orelans decor with mardi gras beads on the table and interior colors of yellow, green and plum (New Orleans colors). My husband and I ordered the gumbo, soft shell crab, fried catfish plate and beignets. The gumbo was good and flavorful, seemed like a soup style. Different from the thick gumbo we get back home at the oyster bars. The soft shell crab was good and fried just like it was supposed to be. The seasoning had a basic Cajun seasoning, similar to their catfish. Thought it was a little pricey for 1 medium sized crab ($15). The catfish was good with the crispy batter and cajun seasoning. Although the catfish piece seemed to be on the thiner side, not very meaty. So the batter to fish ratio was more batter than fish. The beignets were okay. They were warm and soft when they were delivered to our table, and came with powdered sugar on top and a strawberry jam sauce. It was a little more doughy than I liked. I think the beignets at Disneyland are still my favorite as they are more airy and lighter. I think if we were to come back here again we might try some of their other dishes.

I came here for dinner since I was craving Cajun food and haven't had any good ones in a long time. I got the jalapeño cornbread muffins to start and wow this was pretty terrible. It was cold and hard. I barely ate any before I called it quits. For my main, I got the shrimp and grits. The flavor was absolutely amazing but why did it come lukewarm? The grits were a tepid temperature. At least the shrimps came hot. Then for dessert, I ended with beignets and these were so hard. At least the service was really good. read more
Came here for dinner...Wednesday evening...I believe they are closed Monday and Tuesday...so check before you come. Few weeks ago spent a few days in the French Quarter of New Orleans and the food was sooooo good...seeing this place while on a business trip in San Diego I had to try this place and see if it was the real deal or just a pretender. This Cajun restaurant is the real deal. I can't believe it...I highly recommend this place. A must stop here in San Diego. The owner, Bud is from the French Quarter and he makes all the meals and desserts right here. The best. I started with the Seafood Gumbo then Shrimp and Grits...very hearty and excellent in the flavors. Finished with the Bread Pudding. OMG. This is a "5 star must do." Get here and try everything. If you like savory this is the place! The service was fast and friendly. The menu is very simple. I had their Mardri gras . At first I thought it wasn't spicy but after awhile I realized there was a kick to it. The restaurant looks like it can get busy because of its location. read more

This is a place I have been wanting to try for over 8 years, and I'm glad we finally went. It's located in a business area off Balboa Avenue and the 15 freeway, with ample parking both in front of and behind the restaurant. We sat inside, though there is also a lovely patio outside with umbrellas. The service was friendly and the restaurant was clean. It was a bit noisy inside since there isn't much to absorb the sound, so you may need to speak a little louder during conversation. I did find the lunch menu to be expensive. We came here to celebrate my sister's birthday, and everyone seemed happy with their dishes: a shrimp po' boy sandwich, pulled pork sandwich, and pasta with tomato cream sauce and shrimp. I ordered the chicken po' boy sandwich. The sandwiches were served with seasoned fries, but unfortunately the fries looked and tasted like they had been sitting for a a while--dry and not very fresh. My chicken po' boy was disappointing. The sandwich had tomatoes and some iceberg lettuce, but no sauce, which made it very plain. While the chicken itself was tender, it lacked flavor and the overall dish felt like it wasn't prepared with much care. For a $21.50 sandwich that was essentially a few pieces of chicken breast with tomatoes, lettuce, and old fries, it felt like an expensive mistake. Perhaps other dishes on the menu are excellent. However, having grown up with a father who was a top chef, I tend to notice when simple dishes--like sandwiches and fries--aren't executed well. These are usually some of the easiest things to get right, which made the experience even more disappointing for me. read more

Another 5 star review for Bud's! We went for breakfast this time and it did not disappoint! My burrito was flavorful and served hot. Service was 5/5 as usual as well. I wish there had been some light music playing or something, the place was kind of quiet. That's also not a bad thing though. I just wish they did breakfast on the weekends as well! read more

I've been craving creole food and thought it would be great to have some to start off the new year. I was in the mood for a Muffelatta and the server said it'll be on the menu next month. I came in for lunch on Friday around 1:15 and service was really good. They closed at 2 but there were other lunch customers and staff did not rush me or anyone around me. The restaurant has indoor and outdoor seexating. I chose outdoor because the nice weather and tables have shade. I ordered the cornbread, shrimp po'boy and bread pudding to go. I wasn't a fan of the jalapeño cornbread. It comes out warm which is good. I didn't like little piece of corn in the bread. I also didn't like the cold and hard slice of butter. I wasn't able to spread on the cornbread or it would crumble. I also couldn't sit on the bread because it wasn't hot enough to melt it. I enjoyed the sandwich. The butterfly shrimp was lightly battered and seasoned. The seasoned fries were my favorite of the day. Absolute perfection! The bread pudding was packaged cold. I planned to eat at my next stop but didn't because it was straight out the fridge. I don't like cold bread pudding and this one is egg custard. I think they would serve it warm at the restaurant. Been coming here for over 10 years and this place never disappoints! From their welcoming service and southern hospitality, to their delicious New Orleans style food, everything you need is here. Highly recommend the fried pickles and alligator sausage to start off, it's crunchy, savory, juicy, it's the perfect pair! I also had to get my usual Taste of New Orleans with fried catfish. Perfect comfort food, the crawfish mixed in the sauce and fried catfish is an explosion of flavor! Had to end the meal with the famous beignets with strawberry sauce and a cup of delicious, warm bread pudding with coffee on the side. My favorite place for special occasions, or if I'm ever craving Cajun/creole food, this is it! Shout out to Eddie for taking good care of us! Really good restaurant! I've never been to Louisiana but I have quite a few family friends from there. So what I have to say is spoken from this perspective. I think this restaurant was great! Really kind service and the food was amazing! We got the fried pickles, the alligator sausage, the po boy and the jambalaya and everything was amazing. If I had to pick a winner it had to be the shrimp po boy! The seasoning on it was great! I did not get the fried shrimp(I opted for the BBQ shrimp) and I thought it was cooked well and the flavors complemented the dish perfectly! The service, as mentioned before, was great and they were very attentive to refilling waters, checking up on us, and generally just going the extra mile. The ambiance of the restaurant is nice and I think that although it was a bit dark, everything was really clean! Overall, I would recommend this place and I hope you enjoy the food as much as I did! read more
Came here a couple months for a date night with my partner. She occasionally craves food from back home and wanted us to try this spot as she heard reviews were really good. We both started off with a cup of gumbo to share. I was thrown off by the taste of what seemed like dish soap within the roux. We didn't eat it after that second bite. We shared the alligator sausage with fried pickles. The sausage was good but the pickles were a bit too salty. We both catfish plates with étouffée , mines blackened and hers fried. Our plates were good but we both felt it didn't satisfy those cravings from her hometown. read more

I came here after work and was able to be seated right away! They had a nice patio area but we decided to sit in the dining room area. The food was delicious (especially the cornbread!) and the drinks were good as well. I would definately come back to try the full menu. read more

Came in on a Friday evening because we saw they had buckets of crawfish. 1 lb of crawfish was $15 and 2 1/2 of crawfish was $26. They said it's seasonal so definitely stop by if you're craving crawfish! We ordered a couple items from the menu since it was our first time there - cornbread: 3/5 it was good but kind of dry? Wish they used a richer butter to pair with it - alligator sausage and fried pickles: 3.5/5 it was good and then it started tasting salty after a couple bites - Cajun jambalaya with chicken: 4/5 it came out fresh! It was steaming when it got served. Had a ton of flavor - creole bronzed salmon: 4/5 the salmon was nice! I think it was sous vide to temp and seared for a nice crunch. Rice has some walnuts and veggies. - beignets: 4/5 it was nice and fluffy! A lot of powdered sugar so be cautious while blowing on it to cool it down. The strawberry coulis was a nice touch The food was coming out fast in the beginning but our main course meals took a long time. Our server, Eddie, was super nice and communicated when our food was coming out and felt bad it took long so he gave us beignets. He even offered us fresh bread to take home since the restaurant gets new loaves of bread daily. All of the workers we talked to were very nice and hospitable. It's a dimly lit restaurant but feels very home-y. They do have odd hours so definitely check out their hours before stopping by. The food was amazing, today was a spicy jambalaya with andouille sausage which was cooked perfectly, the other dish was the pulled pork po'boy which was delicious. For desert we tried the lemon dessert, yum. The server was attentive and friendly and was quick to bring our food. Been aware of this spot for YEARS, but never had a chance to properly try it out. Made a reservation but walk ins are just fine. There's outdoor seating that looked really nice but opted to appreciate the interior decor and aesthetic instead. The staff were very attentive and welcoming. Be sure to come hungry so you can try out the menu. Starter with the jalapeño corn bread muffins then had the Cajun jambalaya and fried catfish po boy with a cup of the sea food gumbo. Everything was delicious! Couldn't leave without trying the beignets, which hit the spot! Definitely recommend. read more

Saturday's they are open until 9pm we went a 3 it was before the rush !

We took our dog. We sat on the patio, and they brought water for the dog. So, I would say, yes they are dog friendly.

Yes, you can do take out. The restaurant is not very big, so there's a wait during peak times.

Go to their website and it will explain the times. Mon-Tues 7-2:30 pm, Wed - Fri 7:00 am -9:00 pm, Sat. 12 - 9 pm.
Do they have chargrilled oysters like In New Orleans?
I'm not sure. I don't remember reading it on the menu, but I also wasn't looking for it. Sorry!

How large is this place ? How many tables? Do they have boiled and seasoned crawfish this time of year?
It's pretty small. Maybe 7-8 small tables for 2-4. But can confirm it's crawfish season - or so they said when I went on Friday.
