This place is definitely Americanized japanese food. And I do agree with one of the other reviews that if you want authentic japanese food you should go to namikos down the street. But coming here I think most people pretty much know what your going to get from a semi fast food japanese place. They make up a good chicken teriyaki bowl and I much rather come here than Tokyo Joes and at least they don't burn the chicken every single time. I've probably driven by this place 100 times and I never would have guessed this restaurant had good eats if my man hadn't brought me in. Kokoro is the prototypic Yelp 3 star establishment. The dining area is spartan and is getting pretty tired and dated, but it does what it needs to do. The service is generally friendly and pretty good. The ambiance isn't divey, but it definitely starts at casual and allows ample room for some downward drift from there. The food is good and the price is right. Bowls anchor the menu (almost all $9.00 and under) - white or brown rice with beef, chicken, salmon, curry, unagi, shrimp tempura, and vegetable options. The rice bowls are consistent and good. So too the noodle bowls where your choices largely relate to noodle type (udon, lo-mein, ramen) and broth (shoyu, miso). They have several sushi rolls ($4.00 and under - we usually get spicy tuna), and a number of appetizers including edamame, gyoza, shumai and egg rolls. And, you can chase your meal with some hot sake it you're so inclined. Kokoro is the kind of place you go when you don't want to think about where to go and don't want to have to change out of your grubbies. Kokoro is one of our favorite lunch spots, even though it's often very busy during the lunch rush. My husband and I have enjoyed many items on the menu: the rice bowls, ramen, udon, sobaghetti and chicken curry. My favorite is the chicken curry. I could eat that all day! Meh... If judged by the teriyaki bowls alone, I would give less stars. I make better bowls then this and I'm not even Japanese. What got their 3 stars in my eyes are their sushi and Shoyu Ramen. This is a great place to come if you want affordable food at a very fast turnaround. I would imagine if I worked near here I would eat here a lot more. They do have amazing Happy Hour and Sunday is Happy Hour all day. Can't get better than that with cheap beverage and cheap sushi. They also have their arigato points card, where every time you spend money here you can collect points and win free teriyaki bowls. I don't mind the sushi here, where else can you get a spider roll for less than $4? It's not bad either. My personal favorite is spicy tuna, eel, spider roll and shrimp tempura rolls. Also, their shoyo ramen is pretty tasty. If it weren't for the cheap alcohol and cheap spider rolls, I probably would go to Namiko's near by more often. I do really enjoy their sobaghetti with chicken. It's pretty decent although the last time I came here the noodle was a bit dry... Used to love this place when I lived in Arvada, but I guess it must have gone downhill. I was jonesing for one of their beef curry bowls and I guess that's just a craving I'll never get to satiate. We ordered delivery through Uber Eats and all I wanted was a curry bowl; I remembered from dining in years ago that a little extra sauce usually helps. So I ordered an extra half-portion of sauce on the side. It's good that I did, because that's the *only* curry sauce I got. The bowl was bone-dry and sauceless. The little cup of curry sauce I got was far too little to be sufficient; the only thing that made it edible at all was that they gave us an extra half-portion of teriyaki sauce for my wife's bowl for some reason. I added that and it wasn't great, or at all what I wanted. This obviously couldn't have been the mistake, either, where we were given a side of teriyaki instead of the right sauce, as it was not a full portion, and had that been all the sauce we got it would have still been lamentably little. The delicious curry bowls of Kokoro will live on only in memory, I guess. I certainly won't be ordering delivery if they're not even bothered to put sauce on my food. read more

Let me start this off by saying that I haven't ever been to Japan but who gives a f%ck. I'm a native to Colorado with japanese ancestors and again who gives a f%ck! I hate that people don't get that this isn't a traditional homestyle or gourmet japanese restaurant. It's fast food, f#cking duh! good ingredients, decent flavor, and it's reasonably cheap. Yeah you can go down the street and spend 4 times as much coin on better food but I can't afford to do that. If you can, then don't go here if you don't eat fast food. Simple enough. If you don't like salty or sweet, don't order teriyaki (main ingredients in any teriyaki sauce are shoyu and sugar = salty and sweet) or do like I do and get it on the side and add as you like. Really want this place to be like it was when it first opened. Food was great, service was quick and friendly but in recent years everything has gone down hill. We gambled on our last few visits, tepid soup temps, incorrect food orders or not getting certain dishes at all. Slow service or getting ignored by the wait staff over larger parties. This place is not what I was expecting. From the outside, it looks like Asian fast food. But, it has a fascinating layout and great food! This place is mostly long counters, like you would sit at a sushi bar. There are a few tables/booths, but mostly counters. This is really convenient when dining solo, you just kinda pick a seat. They have all-day Happy Hour on Saturday and Sunday! I'm thinking this would be a great place to grab lunch and a beer before walking over to a movie next door :) The Sushi is mostly the cooked kind. Good, but keep that in mind when ordering so you don't get disappointed. The Gyoza/Pot Stickers were quite tasty. And, there is so much on the menu, it is difficult to decide. I will have to come back many times and try something new. Authentic, no. Tasty & inexpensive, yes! Conveniently located on Wads close to Old Towne, yes! Plenty of parking, yes! My wife and I really like Kokoro. The food is pretty good, served quick, by a super friendly staff. We usually come here once every couple of weeks. Where this restaurant falls a little short is in their drive-thru. On severally occasions, we have ordered, waited for quite a while, picked up the order, all to find out we didn't get what we ordered when we got home. This is an easy fix though if the kitchen manager just developed a better QC process. read more

They served me a live beetle in my kokoro bowl!! I went through the drive-thru and ordered a standard kokoro bowl and went home. When I made it home, I opened it and started to drip soy sauce on it when I noticed the rice was moving! There was a live beetle in it!!! I took a picture and video of it and returned to get a refund. I've contacted the Jefferson county health inspector to review this establishment. The food was pretty bland with very strong fish smell as well as the sauce was not to my liking either. I was also irritated by lack of refil on my water. Finally after i flagged someone down for a refil and got my water the water was warm with no ice. I sat right out front so don't understand why i got missed. This place does seem pretty popular so i may need to give it another shot without ordering any seafood and something else and maybe my opinion will change. Other than that maybe people just like it after they had a few drinks and also this is in Arvada where there is not too much diversity and thats why people dont mind the food. Why does this place still exist?! My friend and I came in here with an open mind and excitement for cheap and authentic Japanese cuisine. Wow, were we disappointed. When you first walk in it is nostalgic of a 1970s Charles Manson hellscape. The walls and ceiling and the floor looked like they haven't been cleaned since Charles Manson first blew through this joint. The menu is a complete and utter ruse. It's reminiscent of a mouse trap, you see the cheese, it looks pretty good all around, but once you swoop in, BANG, ur neck is broken taken by surprise. It literally made my friend and I depressed how bad it was, our theme of conversation was, "well...for the price" but I don't even think it's worth what the ask for it. Kokoro is a solid choice for the quick service Japanese food. We have gone to both Kokoro locations intermittently over the past several years and they have been consistent in their product, though I probably prefer their Colorado Blvd. location. Ordered the Kokoro Bowl with spicy teriyaki sauce. It comes with thin sliced beef, dark meat chicken (you can opt for all white meat), vegetables and choice of rice. The beef is prepared similar to Sukiyaki, and the chicken also seemed to be more simmered in sauce then freshly grilled. The spicy teriyaki sauce was really not spicy and is poured over the meat (all my sauce seemed ladled on just one side). My wife opted for a California Roll, Unagi Roll and Seaweed salad. She was pleased with all her choices. They were standard fare and seemed freshly prepared. The Unagi roll didn't have a large portion of Unagi but was decent. With a couple of Boylan sodas, total price was about $25 + tip since there are servers. Overall, Kokoro is A-Ok; moderately priced as far as value, with friendly service and drive through convenience. read more

I have been top the downtown location and wrote a review for that a few weeks back. Not wanting to cocktail during lunch hour-- my Kokoro order was considerably different today. I sipped on some hot green tea whilst waiting for my Salmon Bowl. Pretty basic food. Big bowl of rice Topped with some steamed cabbage and broccoli Add on a nice size piece of cooked Salmon cover with some sort of generic sauce= good to go!! Food was OK- not good, not bad-- just kinda there. Frozen dinner meals have more flavor. Service however was great. Fast and friendly. No frills. In/ Out in less than 20 minutes and back to my day. I do think that personally-- I would enjoy Kokoro much more for Happy Hour. read more

We have been coming to kokoro since it opened and have never had a bad meal or bad service. Today we went in on a particularly busy lunch rush and had Whitney as our server... she was so rude! the entire time we were there she was bad mouthing her co workers, huffing and puffing and rolling her eyes, god forbid you ask her for anything... when we asked for a straw she practically threw it at us...lunch took a little longer to come out today, wouldn't have been a problem except we stopped in before going to the airport, when we asked about how much longer it would be she barked at us saying it was really busy and she has no idea... we will be back but will make sure to never sit in her section ever again read more

Love this place for a cheap, fast, yummy lunch or dinner. No it's not gourmet and it won't change your life, but you get a lot for the price and it's really good. I much prefer Kokoro's bowls to those at Tokyo Joe's. The sushi is pretty average, but the bowls are really yummy and most of the appetizers are pretty good too. This is fast healthy fresh Japanese food. I've been eating here all my life. Three generations of my family enjoyed the Kokoro. We can all go inside for a fast fun meal with alcohol or we can take the drive-through if we want to pick up something to go. The portions are a large size. Hungry people will be satisfied and less hungry people will have leftovers. My go to order is a cook or a bowl with dark meat and white rice. My son likes the gyoza and edamame. read more

Driving down from Westminster to Lakewood, this brightly lit Japanese restaurant with a drive through attracted me being from Seattle, I love quality food, and this place brags it's "fresh". I couldn't find teriyaki on the menu (what???) but I did find curry which is not Japanese. I asked if the curry bowl has peanuts as these can be lethal to my wife. The snotty b---ch on the other side of the microphone said is disgusted tone , " I have NO idea". On a menu that has 20 items you're not bright enough or accommodating enough to know?
