Ordered a few items for delivery from Kona Hawaiian BBQ. First the good: the Chicken Teriyaki is really good. The chicken wasn't dry or overcooked and the teriyaki gave it a great flavor. The Kalbi short ribs from the Hawaiian BBQ Mix was excellent as well. Tender and flavorful. Now the bad: the musabis were just not great. The chicken musabis were dry. The spam musabis were the right texture, but the seaweed on both options were low quality. It was extremely fishy tasting and were mushy. The BBQ Beef and BBQ Chicken from the Hawaiian BBQ Mix were so dry like jerky. I really wish this place was more consistent because they had some real standouts. read more

After a trip to Golden, this place is less than 15 minutes away. I was craving chicken katsu like how my aunty makes it for pot luck. And fortunately we didn't have to travel too far to get there. It screams L&L, but a little bit elevated. There's a picture menu so if you don't know what to get, you can at least see what to expect. I immediately knew I was getting the kastu, which came with two scoops of rice and mac salad. We also tried the kalua pork and spicy chicken combo. Which came with one scoop of rice and a house salad. The chicken kastu was perfectly crispy. But very thin. You get two layers though so it's filling. The mac salad is authentic and was also really delicious. Ok the combo was not great. The kalua pork was dry, there was no fat or juices from the pork whatsoever. It was more like pork floss. And the house salad was decent. I'm just not a huge fan of iceberg lettuce. There is a sauce station with soy sauce, katsu sauce, and teriyaki sauce. Everything was thin, watery, and super sweet. It's more like the consistency of a sweet sour sauce. If I had to choose one, I'd definitley recommend the teriyaki sauce. It had a great flavor. Just an unexpected texture. After living in Arvada/Wheat Ridge for several years, I finally got to try out Kona Hawaiian BBQ and I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. The neighborhood is not really known for its diversity in food but Kona is a much-needed delicious Hawaiian BBQ spot. I've only tried their Aloha Plate with 2 sides (BBQ Chicken and Kona Fire Chicken) and spam musubi and everything was well-made and delicious. The Aloha Plate comes with either 1 side or 2 sides (2 sides was a dollar more), salad, cucumbers, and rice. The ratio of everything is perfect but I wish there was a bit more rice. Not a big deal at all. One thing I would like to point out in particular is that many, many places I've been to mess up orders when asked to put a sauce on the side or something similar but the people at Kona got everything perfectly. Totally different than anything else in the area. I was in a hurry so I grabbed some takeout. The dining room has a very aloha mahalo vibe and they seats were actually pretty comfortable. Great combos to try the menu. I was especially impressed with the sweet savory flavor of the beef. Easy ordering and they bring your food right to your table as soon as possible. I'm leaving this review to remind myself that I need to avoid this place going forward. Ordered to go. The person who helped me at the counter was helpful. The problem is the food. It tasted inedible, like it had been cooked a day ago and left on a steam table until it was put in the box. At least, I hope it was kept warm... The bbq chicken was too tough to chew and the sauce was entirely absorbed by the chicken into a single lump of garbage that I wouldn't serve to a dog. The chicken katsu was coated in what looked like 3 layers of breading and fried, refried, and fried a third time. It was so dense and hard that I could probably have cracked an egg with. I can't be certain because I was not willing to ruin an egg trying it. Their idea of a side of vegetables is a huge bed of greasy cabbage leaves that haven't even been separated, with a single broccoli floret. I am not expecting much for the price. It's basically fast food and that's where I set my expectations, but even fast food should be somewhat edible and not so scary to consider eating that I throw it away because it's no longer food. Pretty decent for Hawaiian BBQ! I love that it's super close to me. I think this is the only Hawaiian BBQ place in the area? I am not 100% sure though. But overall, food is good. I feel like food comes out pretty quickly. We've taken family who visit here and they have all liked it. One of my family members said it was the best Hawaiian BBQ they have had. I think my favorite is the Kona fire chicken. It's not spicy at all but very flavorful. Also obsessed with their spam musubis. I would recommend those items. But honestly, we've also tried the beef. I hit the grand opening even though it was pouring rain outside. I like the choices available. I ordered the mini meal with BBQ chicken. It comes with a scoop of rice, a scoop of mac salad and the seasoned meat is on a bed of sautéed cabbage plus some broccoli. The mini was a full meal! The portions are generous. The mini had a choice of protein from Chicken Katsu, Crispy Shrimp, Grilled Chicken Breast, Kona Fire Chicken, BBQ Chicken or BBQ Beef. Something for everyone. The larger plates also had more selections of proteins. I want to go back and try their musubi. I saw others having it and it looked really good. My only drawback was hearing when they called my number. The ambient noise in the room with many people made it hard to hear. A crowd at your restaurant is not bad problem to have. We had it catered at work and they brought Grilled Chicken Breast w/ Teriyaki and Grilled Chicken Breast w/ Lemon Pepper seasoning with Green Mix Salads and Macaroni Salad. It was all delicious and the meat was so tender and juicy. Most of the time catering is dry and just not that great but here was fantastic! I would like to go to the actual restaurant at some point. So happy this little place made its way into Arvada! I'm a fan of place that sells a good spam musubi. Kona has really great food and their portions are great! I have been here a couple times now, and have tried their katsu, bbq beef, and their chicken. All are really amazing. Their crab rangoons are also great, they are on the sweeter side! The workers are all nice and quick. You order your food at the counter and they call you up when your order is ready. Inside, there are plenty of tables and some outside. I've tried two items from their menu: the chicken katsu with kalua pork combo, and the barbecue mix--also with chicken katsu. I'll be honest, I'm borderline obsessed with chicken katsu, so I had high hopes. Unfortunately, this was some of the worst katsu I've ever had. The breading overwhelmed what little chicken there was, and the meat itself was overcooked--some pieces had the chewy, rubbery texture of fried rubber bands with a hint of chicken flavor. As for the kalua pork, it was dry and lacked the proper fat-to-lean ratio. I've had better kalua pork in my elementary school cafeteria, and that's not an exaggeration. The short ribs are alway more than a chicken dish. Spam misubis are very good! 2 for under $6. The bbq chicken is very tender (even after I microwave left overs for 2 minutes), short ribs are fab. I love how they add the vegetables since Hawaiian food is not the healthiest. The Mac salad needs a little salt and maybe a tiny bit less Mayo so it's not as runny.
