This place is a hidden gem in Edgewater/Sloan's Lake! I ordered takeout from Shiso once during Covid, and it was good, but that's not a great way to judge a restaurant. A friend and I went back last night, and it was excellent all around. It's in a little strip mall with a nice Starbucks anchoring one end and this restaurant anchoring the other, directly across the street from Sloans Lake on Sheridan. I ordered a mango roll, black pepper tuna and yellowtail sashimi and the spicy scallop nigiri. Each piece was completely delicious, firm and fresh. My friend doesn't do sushi but she had a lot of options here--rice bowls (don buri), ramen, noodle bowls and karaage chicken. Oh! And fresh oysters on the half-shell! Second time coming here in a week. Their happy hour is very attractive (everyday, 3-6p) with basic rolls around $6/6.5. The restaurant is super clean and bright, very inviting. They have a decent bar if you're interested in drinks which is a nice option. I ordered the spicy crunchy yellowtail roll for $6.5 and the Alaska roll (salmon, avocado) for $6. The Alaska roll is hands down my favorite. Super fresh fish paired perfectly with avocado. The yellowtail however was slightly disappointing. I tasted only the crunchy. Towards the end I just scooped out the filling and put it on top of my salmon roll. Next time I would order a roll other than a spicy crunchy. The wasabi was nice and most of the ginger was good but a couple ends were questionable and brown. We popped in for a quick bite tonight. This is one of those places you aren't expecting to be a diamond in the rough but we we loved how fresh the fish was! We ordered a variety of rolls but our favorite was the crazy tuna roll and the playboy roll! The spot is really accommodating for big or small groups, the sushi chefs are great with navigating any requests, and the price is spot on! We had two servers which was a little confusing but we think the girl was in training. Since this spot is by the highway, we were also really excited that you couldn't hear any of the noise from people running the lake or the traffic outside. I'd categorize them as "economical sushi". it's not as good as Sushi Den yet it's so much better than your run of the mill sushi place. We tried Shiso as takeout the other night. While the fish tasted fresh we felt that it is pretty expensive for what you get. The rolls are pretty tiny. Shiso was such a nice surprise, a hidden gem for us and not too far away. Backstory: We has just watched a great movie on Amazon Prime, East Side Sushi and decided that it had been too long since we were at our favorite, and at that point, hands down best sushi we'd ever found since moving to Colorado almost 4 years ago. I know, I know, big shoes to fill. We go. It's a Friday night. We've been many times on a Friday night and have always found two seats at the bar. Not this time. Side note: yeah for our first CO sushi love. But, bad for us. Several couples were ahead of us and there wasn't one open seat anywhere. Enter Yelp. As always, this is how we find everything, mind you. Including said amazing original but crazy busy sushi place. Hmmmm..... similar number of reviews and 4.5 stars? Only a few miles away? We're in. We go. No lines. Seats available at the bar. Super friendly wait staff and sushi staff. We quickly surmised who the head chef was and compared notes with original first love sushi place. We ordered our usual: 6-8 various sushi nigiri (salmon, octopus, tuna, yellow tail) and two speciality rolls (usually one is spicy and has some version of jalepeno). We wait... with drinks. My partner is elated that they serve Kirin on draft and in a traditional glass. Sushi arrives pretty quickly as we also discover that Shiso has delivery and take out. WHAT?!?! And then, the moment of truth. We eat. Every bite was amazing. The sushi was incredibly fresh and melted in our mouths. Rice - perfect. Huge pieces of fish - draping over the ends big. Rolls were also on point. We both looked at one another and said, holy shiznet. This might be better than said sushi love place. About the same price and it shows in the food. Wow. Well done, Shiso. I've said it once and I'll say it again, SHISO SLAPS. We continue to convert everyone we know when bringing them here to leave their old sushi place behind and they never look back. Went in person yesterday which is always a treat and shared the sushi board below between 4 of us. I love that the veggie rolls were off to the side and not smushed between all of the fish. Not pictured, edamame and a garden salad, which I forgot is so much bigger when dining in which I love! One of our "shrimp and cucumber" only friends tried a bunch of the new speciality rolls and loved each one more than the last. Even brought home leftovers to enjoy for lunch the next day. We ordered takeout: a chicken and veggie tempura bento with a California roll instead of rice plus a three-roll lunch with spicy tuna crunch, tuna, and salmon skin rolls. Both lunches come with a generous portion of miso soup with seaweed and tofu and a salad with tobiko dressing. The tempura lunch also has three lovely gyoza. The two of us enjoyed a big lunch and had leftover sushi for snacking (or another meal in my case). The tempura was wonderful! Crispy, delicate, flavorful, and it even carried well. I came here with a friend this past Sunday because we both really wanted sushi and like trying new places each Sunday. Part of the reason we came was because its supposed to be 26 dollars for all you can eat on Sunday however that is so not the case. It's only happy hour from 3pm-6pm. It's also only on select sushi rolls, special rolls, and pieces of sushi. We got there at 5pm so it was fine. Most of the happy hour rolls ranged between 4 - $11 dollars while the sushi pieces ranged from 2.75-4 and you only get 2 pieces. The fish here is very good and taste pretty fresh. They give you a good amount of fish in each of the rolls as well. Although we did have one that was fried and it was cream cheese and salmon that had way to much cream cheese so careful for that. I had a volcano roll, spicy tuna roll, and rainbow roll along with 2 pieces of eel. That cost me about 26 dollars and two of the rolls were 8 pieces while other was 6 pieces. So it was a lot of sushi for a good price. The wait staff was pretty friendly as well. Although know you will have to ask them for things, they didn't really approach unless asked unless it was for drinks to refill. The place is also really nice and so is the area. Most sushi I eat ends up being takeout, and it can range so much in quality. I was really pleased with our order overall! The rice was fluffy and the fish tasted very fresh. The "spicy girl" was indeed spicy and I really enjoyed it, and the classics like the California role and spicy tuna were yummy (although I couldn't find spicy tuna without crunch? Would have preferred it classic but it was still good!). The one disappointment was the size; the rolls were quite petite and our party of 4 had our fill but probably would have ordered another roll if we'd know about the size. Many creative rolls (with a lot of spicy options), which hasn't been the case at most sushi places I've found in Denver. If you like spicy, me recommendation: New York Roll (yellow tail, scallion, cream cheese & jalapeno deep fried and baked w with mayo) - $11. I asked for this without the cream cheese, and they were very accommodating for all special requests. "Deep fried" is also very light here, so no need to worry about too much crust/grease. ATMOSPHERE: Very cute place -- casual but classy -- not a hole in the wall, as you might think from a strip mall location. Shiso has become our go-to sushi spot since moving back to Denver. The happy hour deals are what keep us coming back consistently, but the service and ambiance are excellent; exactly what we are looking for in a sushi restaurant. The chefs greet you when you walk in the door. This is a great way to start the experience. Although the seating can be a little tight at times, it's not overly cramped or uncomfortable by any means. Fish quality is fantastic. We've never had doubts about whether or not something was fresh or questionable. As you frequent sushi eaters know, only one instance of this at a sushi spot will have you doubting their entire operation. This far, we have been very pleased. Keep up the good work Shiso!
