When a little birdie told me how good the sandwiches and Asian fusion at KoKyu was, I was like a duck to water. Little did I know, it was at the top of my partner's pecking order, too. You know what they say, birds of a feather... Anyways, we had both been pretty chicken about trying new restaurants in the area since the last new place I recommended ended up being a bit of an albatross. I had to eat crow on that one, unfortunately. Well, thankfully, once we got our ducks in a row, we flew the coop to try their takeout since KoKyu was only a few miles away as the crow flies. Despite the impressively long and diverse menu, we had eagle eyes for the Chicken Bacon Franch and the Ko Faux Bahn, respectively. Oh man, first bite, immediate goosebumps. We absolutely gobbled them up, and have gone cold turkey on other local sandwich shops ever since. If you live in the Durham-Chapel Hill area, you don't need to go on a wild goose chase to find incredible food. I'm not really sure why this sandwich place has a separate Yelp page from KoKyu, because it's all the same place with one integrated menu (of which the sandwiches are only one part). I've actually eaten here before, but this was the first time I had a sandwich. They are still taking COVID quite seriously here, with only a few tables outside and no indoor dining. I really appreciate this! We ordered online through a QR code placed on our table, and our food arrived very quickly. I got the ko faux banh with a side of seaweed salad. The sandwich was delicious and super spicy! I usually don't really like soy nuggets but the honey peanut sauce that coated these was so tasty that I didn't mind the texture at all. The food is always amazing especially considering the fact that my wife and I stay away from starch and gluten as much as possible. The team is eager to modify dishes to suit us and the ordering system makes it easy to explain what we want. This little spot has a soft spot in my heart (er..well stomach). They have outdoor seating but warning it gets toasty even with their umbrellas in the NC summer! This Asian street-food/fusion spot has so much going for it - for starters, the menu is huge and has a little something for everyone, including tacos, rice bowls, burgers, and a wide variety of unique sandwiches. The prices may seem steep at first, but the quality and flavor profiles make it more than worth it. I have tried their Karaage Bowl and The Viet Satay Sandwich and both were outstanding. I especially loved the honey peanut sauce paired with spicy mayo and the crispy chicken on the Viet Satay sandwich. My husband was equally impressed with the Chicken Bacon Franch sandwich and the Rueben's Cuban special. I've also really enjoyed the unique non-alcoholic frozen beverages they serve. On my most recent visit, I tried a Rosemary Yuzu-Ade. So interesting! They are located near Southpoint Mall, making it an easy detour if you happen to be shopping in the area or traveling through Durham on I-40. This place always makes me happy as a lark. At first I always got the KO.F.C. sandwich, but once I tried the Milanesa there was no going back. Every so often I'll get tempted enough to try one of the specials (keep your eagle eyes on them), but they are usually short-lived. Being from NYC, we missed Vietnamese restaurants that nail important details like perfectly crispy baguettes - and KoKyu nailed it. Every ingredient was perfectly marinated and integrated. To add to our surprise, they have an expansive beer menu which is honestly even better than most beer specialty shops I've been to in the area. All the sauce from the sandwich fell so I had to wipe it clean with my bread off of the tray. For my side, I got sweet potato salad and it was alright. Nothing to rave about.
