I absolutely love this place! The caliber of food and affordability makes Kome second to none. We came for dinner and got the Kome Viche and the Sashimi Sampler from the menu. The Kome Viche was super fresh and had a lovely sweetness that is complemented well by the tanginess of soy sauce. The Sashimi Sampler was high grade fish and so clearly fresh. I'm usually not a fan of tuna, but the tuna had me begging for more. Best tuna sashimi I have ever had! We also had the King Salmon Box and the Beef Tataki from a special menu. The king salmon was great - nice and tender and fatty - but there was a bit too much rice, which I felt masked the taste and texture of the salmon. The Beef Tataki was mouth watering, to say the least! Tender slices of beef seared to perfection topped with an amazing salad that combined with the beef to create flavors that linger in your memories, making you crave revisiting this place! The service was also amazing. We had a great server that was so patient and accommodating. The sushi chefs were attentive and happy to answer questions I had about the sashimi. When we left, we were thanked by at least 4 employees, portraying an enviable customer-oriented atmosphere in the midst of a dinner-time craze. Overall, 5 stars to Kome! Ahhhh man..I went again after a month since my last visit since I was in town. I got the Surf and Turf roll (again) and the Austin roll. Dude...all I can say to describe it is "sublime." Really it was. I sense that Kome has found its rhythm and rolling along with the preparation of its food. The service was great, the place wasn't as packed as it usually was (then again, I came in pretty late for a Sat night dinner). I was really impressed with the Austin roll, full of flavor mixes between the Tuna, the freshly seasoned rice, and sweet teriyaki: simple and flavorful. A little hint on how to eat it, flip the roll (so the teriyaki dressing side is down), dip it in soy and eat it. That way, the soy and teriyaki flavors hit your taste buds instantly and more evenly (unless you eat it the regular way, where you will have to chew it for 1-2 seconds in order to get the flavors to hit. Kinda like those weirdos who savor the wait of opening thier Christmas presents more than actually getting them. I've never understood those people). read more

I decided to visit Kome for lunch. Parking lot was full (small lot), but still a good sign to me. Atmosphere: when I walked in, I was slapped in the face with a fishy smell; that's not a good sign. We were seated fairly quick. Food: I ordered only one piece of nigiri and it was tasty. The rolls were interesting and yummy. The reason for the 3 star rating is the fishy smell. Honestly, I hate the idea of giving Komé 5 stars, but not for the reasons you'd think. It's already hard enough to get into the place now. If it keeps getting 5 stars, more people will go, and the already-30-minute wait will skyrocket to a couple of hours. Stay away from Komé people! It's mine. All mine!! PROS: So what's to like about Komé? Let me give you a small list: - Quality sushi - The color, flavor, texture, and odor (or lack thereof) of the fish here is perfect. They don't have to use the standard sushi bar trip of dousing their rolls in sauce to cover up sub-par fish. Their nigiri and sashimi is delicious. - Variety - Komé has several items on their menu you don't normally see outside of a Japanese izakaya here in the states - takoyaki, for instance. Add to that homemade gyoza, tempura-fried Camembert cheese w/honey, idako yaki ... well, you could really fill up on the izakaya food. ... Also, stay away from the sake cheesecake. It's mine. All mine!! - Service - Despite the laboriously long wait to get in anymore, thanks to the recommendations of Paul Qui and everyone else, the service is really very good ... based on my experience. CONS: Perhaps I'm nitpicking, but there are some things I don't like about Komé; - Size - I realize capital is an issue when going from a food trailer to a brick-and-mortar shop, but if you're popular enough to make that transition, it might be a good idea to splurge on a larger building. It gets quite ... umm... cozy in Komé. - The Wait - Due to the limited space, the line to get in is pretty big. Prepare to wait close to an hour on the weekends. - Parking - Well, this will be a problem anywhere close to downtown that gets popular, but parking really is a hassle, even with the expanded parking in front of neighboring businesses. Despite the cons, I do love going to Komé. I'll wait patiently for the time when the hipsters move on to the next fashionable place to eat, and the line to get in isn't so long. read more

There's nothing here that I haven't loved. The sushi is fairly priced for the quality that you receive. The izakaya type dishes are spot on - for the adventurous I recommend the scallop (hotate) carpaccio and amaebi kobachi (raw sweet shrimp with a delicate quail egg). For those a little more squeamish about raw food, go for the Okonomiyaki or Tonpei-yaki - they're both savory dishes that remind me of a seafood or pork frittata with sweet mayo sauces. The grilled salmon and yaki onigiri (grilled rice ball, wrap it up with the seaweed it comes with and eat it with your hands) are also some of my favorites. They also have a large selection of sake, some wines, and a mix of Japanese and local craft beers. Go at off-peak times with a small group for maximum enjoyment. read more

My new favorite overall sushi experience in Austin. The food is close to Uchi or Uchiko quality, but at reduced prices. There also isn't a 2+ hour wait to get it, which is fantastic. I really hate trying to coordinate a dinner at Uchi these days - having to try to figure out approximately when you'll be hungry, then timing your arrival to be hours before that. At Kome, you can just show up and will generally be seated with 10-30 minutes depending on the crowd, so it makes for an easier more relaxing night or somewhere you can just pop in if you get a last minute urge for sushi. Sushi is quite good and features a decent selection with some specials. You won't find as many unusual varieties here as at higher priced restaurants, but they have all of the mainstream stuff. They have a wide variety of creative rolls, but you might consider getting light sauce or sauce on the side if you prefer to taste more of the fish, rice or other fillings. Some of the rolls contain a large amount of sauce. Kome also offers a variety of fried and grilled items, including various forms of Asian junk food, tempura shrimp/vegetables/etc, and misc other meat and fish. Bottom line, people who don't or won't eat sushi can enjoy a full meal here as well. They also have excellent noodle bowls on the menu at lunchtime. They have the typical Asian bottled beer selections along with some wine and sakes, although the sake prices seem a bit on the high side compared to other places in town. I'd love to see them start carrying some lower end unfiltered sakes in the sub $20/bottle range. As mentioned in some of the other reviews, this place can be very loud, similar to the levels at Justine's. It hasn't even been a major problem for me, but be aware. They've recently improved the waiting area inside and added a small outdoor patio. Parking can be difficult at busy times, but if you aren't a lazy slob and can walk a block or two, there is plenty of street parking in the neighborhood behind. Definitely recommended. read more

Yumm-o. This place is literally half the price of Uchi or Uchiko and not too far behind in quality. Creativity, perhaps. Seats were quickly available at the sushi bar and from just looking the chairs at the tables, I can tell you that the sushi bar seats are loads more comfortable. And have arms! One recommendation for sitting at bar -- choose seating furthest from the entrance and server area. Too much action going on around you while you're eating otherwise. Service was great. I ordered a Sapporo and the server asked if he could make a suggestion, to which I agreed. I ended up with a Ashai Super Dry, keg beer, shipped straight from Japan! It was delicious and was happy for the suggestion! You. must. order. the. beef carpaccio. Party in your mouth. A rad little party. It had a bit of a fungus called snow fungus [or white fungus] and it's texture was so interesting!!! I wish I had a better way to describe it's consistency, but that's why you'll have to order it. Super cute place! The exterior is a perfect place for group photos to commemorate the night ;) No complaints about atmosphere here! Noise level can be bothersome sometimes. It really just depends on time of day, as that determines the type of patrons. Group of college kids? Rowdy. Date night for some yuppies? Pretty chill. It varies a lot though, but the noise level has never been bad enough to completely distract me from talking to whoever i"m with. Also, I'd like to make it clear that Kome is a little pricey. (But not Uchi/Uchiko range, no worries.) If you're starving and looking to be stuffed, you might end up dropping a lot of money. BUT it's still easy (and affordable) to leave feeling satisfied. Just a heads up so no one's aghast at the prices! On to the food. Lunch: the thing to try seems to be the ramen! It's only offered at lunch time anyways. I got the tonkotsu ramen, which was delish. I did not expect corn to be a topping - is it usually?? - but no big. The broth could've used a wee bit more richness, perhaps simmer for longer?, but I might be saying that because I'm now conditioned to accept the extreme richness of Ramen Tatsu-ya and ESK ramen. Overall, I liked it. Really liked the egg. Chasu was a-ok. Noodles were yummy. I'd probably rank their ramen (in terms of quantity vs price, and quality + taste) a little below Tatsu-ya but definitely above ESK. Tatsu-ya portion is bigger, that's about only reason why. Dinner: this is done in the small plates style, so as to offer more of a sampling of various foods. Order several things to be satisfied! I usually get 1 sushi roll + 2 plates. Nothing super special about the sushi - it's fresh and tasty. It's rather pricey though. My fave roll is the Alone Together which is $13! But it's loaded with fish at least. One thing I like about the sushi is that Kome manages to successfully revamp and even re-make traditional sushi rolls in their own style. Not all "fusion"-y places succeed in the endeavor, but Kome does! Small plates I would recommend: yakitori-set, yakitori-kushi, and the tori-teba nagoya style. (I know I know... you're thinking 'i have no idea what any of that means.') I love all 3! Yum. Always wonderfully marinated/seasoned. Parking is never a problem. Their lot is tiny so I almost never bother even looking there, because there's ample street parking around the place. Fret not! read more

if i had to describe Kome, i would use two words: Quality & Variety Kome offers wide variety on their menu from sushi to udon to ramen to variety of hot combination plates. it's rare to see one restaurant tackle this much and do so well across the board...all except for one which i'll cover later. service on both of our visit was amazing. our server Dusten today was as friendly as can be and was the most pleasant server in recent memory. from their host staff to their manager who often doubles as a runner were terrific. all were friendly and had non-stop smiles. btw, the water guy rocked. he was constantly on the move to make sure everyone had plenty of h20 and was eager to help clear our table whenever we finished our small plates. that really helped since the table was small and we had ordered lot of food. =) oh to mention Dusten again, he was on the ball!! he not only gave us great recommendation but was on top of everything to make sure we had a great experience. we don't remember the name of the server from yesterday but he was just as friendly and helpful. servers here are simply amazing. as reviewed by previous yelpers, all cut rolls we had were great. we tried the Spooky Roll (our favorite), Alone together and Crunchy Dynamite. chicken karaage was as good as expected and even i even devoured the salad!! (i actually hate greens so this is saying a lot). i only wished they had larger portion of rice with chicken karraage but that's just me. only reason i rate Kome 4 stars rather than 5 is their ramen...... i ordered the spicy tonkotsu ramen with extra garlic which i usually order to give that extra kick. while i really, really wanted to enjoy their ramen, it really couldn't. while it had potential to be great, it was too bland. i almost wanted to pour some soy sauce but i figured that would be wrong. the extra garlic i ordered (Kome only offered garlic oil) helped redeem it somewhat. otherwise, it would have been a complete disaster for me. the braised pork was an interesting idea, i personally did not enjoy it very much. the egg however, was pretty darn amazing... bottom line on their ramen: all the components seems to be in place but their broth needs more flavor. with that said, Kome is an amazing place that offered plenty for everyone at a great quality. make sure to beat the crowd to avoid parking issues.... they do get busy quickly. read more

I wish I could give them a 3.5, but 3 will have to do. We got seated quickly, but I noticed a big line formed just after we got there. There's not much seating so it all depends on good timing. The waitress was really friendly too. For a starter I shared the pork and shrimp dumplings and the spring rolls. They were both average tasting. Nothing really wrong with them, but not amazingly delicious either. I ordered the Tarantula roll which was one of the more expensive rolls at $14. Its probably 3 times the size of an average sushi! It was pretty impossible for me to eat them with chopsticks since they didn't even fit into the soy sauce containers, I ended up eating it with my hands. It also had a lot of lettuce in it, which it pretty strange. When the sushi falls apart, it looks like a mini salad! The shrimp was tasty, but the crab wasn't my favorite. The last one had the crab legs still attached which is where I guess it gets its name from, but was a little strange and inedible. Nothing tasted bad or anything, I just was expecting some really good sushi and left full, but disappointed. read more

I always get the Summer Time roll because the combo of spicy tuna, crunchy shrimp tempura, creamy avocado, and zippy go-go sauce is irresistible. The hype is true. This is all I've ever wanted in a Japanese restaurant. Ramen and sushi in one place? I'm there! I got to try a bunch of rolls, a bowl of the miso ramen, and the green tea parfait. And ok we MIGHT have over-ordered, given that the ramen alone was enough to feed two people well, but it was all for a good cause (my appetite). The rolls were cuh-razy good. We had a summer time roll (perfect shrimp tempura), bbq eel with cream cheese and avocado, kanpyo roll, dynamite and trio. and i had a piece of tamago that had the kome logo branded in it! I seriously cannot get over the cuteness of that damn roll. The ramen was delicious - I learned that the little white cut-out with the pink strip is a fish ball (?) or something, and it didn't have much of a taste, but thats ok because it would have been overpowered by the broth anyway. And I like that they had squeaky alkaline noodles. The green tea parfait was okay, but I thought it was actually the least delicious of the things we tried. The concept, to me, was as follows: Dump every Japanese sweet into a glass, serve. There was green tea ice cream, matcha powder, sesame powder, pocky, mochi, red beans, and a custardy thing at the bottom. It wasn't too sweet, it was just too many elements. Anyway, they could work on it is all i'm sayin'. The genmaicha hit the spot (and was the only thing that kept me from immediately napping after this huge meal), and came in an adorable tea pot. In fact, most things here were adorable, down to the wee little chopstick wrapper. Super kawaii!! *blink blink* My only reason for not giving the full 5 is that I would like to go back for dinner - yes, I occasionally reserve judgment - and our waiter seemed like he didn't know what a lot of stuff was. I'm not a japanese food expert, but I know enough to know how little I know, and to want more knowledgeable guidance from my server. But he was still very nice and accommodating and ran back to ask the owners every time we asked a stumper. And they've only been open for about a month so I guess I could give the staff like half a hot sec to learn the menu. read more

I miss this place so badly it hurts. I can't believe it, but almost none of the izakaya-style dishes they serve here can be found in Richmond. For that matter, most of them are impossible to find even in the more cosmopolitan reaches of north virginia. You Austinites should really hop to and extract maximal joy from this place. read more

I recently moved within walking distance of this place, I was originally super excited. After a couple visits, I'm feeling more lukewarm. Kome really should be better than it actually is. The thing is, Kome essentially serves Japanese street food, but for exorbitant prices. I had many of these dishes while studying in Japan, be it in a subway station or at a stand on the beach. Kome dresses them up as something fancier, which is what happens with all Japanese food, actually. But at least they have a different menu than every other Japanese restaurant. But the execution is very meh. Generally, I found most items overcooked and a little bland. Take takoyaki, for instance. This is one of my absolute favorites. Oftentimes, they come with multiple toppings, so you can customize the flavor. Kome's was decent, served plain, but all together unexciting. Maybe they could have added a little more octopus, also. Granted, it's cute inside. Nice details in the decor. And the people are super nice. But honestly, the food is very, very mediocre. read more

We came here with my son and daughter- in-law, who know their sushi. Kome did not disappoint. My Tarantula Roll was excellent. It had soft shell crab, shrimp tempura, carrot, spinach and misago. Very nice! The O-toro super fatty tuna nigiri was a real treat. Very tender, very flavorful. The miso soup was possibly the best I've ever eaten. My wife had pork belly that she said was delicious. I am at a cross roads here, if I write a review it's going to be nothing but positive words coming out of me which will result in more folks giving this place a shot. I tried the the spicy ramen and man was it a war of flavors in my mouth reminded me of ramen I would find in Japan or at the very least in Cali. Komé - Spicy Miso Ramen - Japanese Near Me - Austin, Texas

I enjoyed eating here as much as I enjoy going to any other sushi bar. It wasn't anything spectacular like everyone I knew had hyped. I am giving the restaurant a 3-star because I can't really think of anything worth going back for. In addition, this is a small restaurant with a really loud atmosphere. The portions are personable and the prices were reasonable for the small amount they give you. If you have a hungry boyfriend, he might not be happy with one dish. The grilled escolar was good, fatty and similar tasting to sea bass when it was cooked. The grilled squid was very satisfying and topped with a sweet teriyaki sauce. The sauce was a bit much, so I would ask for vegan soba noodles or rice on the side. The downside is that all of the main dishes are a la cart and don't come with a side dish to compliment it. You actually have to purchase the side dish. The vegan soba noodles was really refreshing! It comes in a small bowl, the size you'd expect for miso soup, for $3.50. I wish I would've had more. It would have been a great dish by itself. For the sushi, my cousin seemed to enjoy the pork belly, but I'm not sure cause she didn't say much about it. The 'Love for Sale' roll was my favorite out of the other 4 rolls we ordered. It had fresh salmon and crunch veggies with mango stuffed in the center, then drizzled with a sweet mango sauce on top. I would eat more of that than anything else. I also recommend the fried octopus balls. You may not feel bad eating the entire dish of about 5 crunchy, flaky topped, octopus filled, formed in a ball, goodness. read more

Just another place with modern decor and hip culture to hide what really matters, the food. It would be nice to have a nice looking restaurant to also have good food. Kome reminds me of hip, craft coffee places that have bad coffee, except they can at least serve as a good work area / hangouts. I've been to Kome for four times already and each time I've hoped to leave with a reason to like the food. The fourth visit is more than enough to realize I will not come back. The first time I was here, I liked the decor and had sushi rolls and special nigiri, unremarkable is all I could think of. But seeing they only served katsu-don and ramen during lunch, I knew I had to give them another chance to try the katsu-don. Came back for katsu-don and it was chewy and mushy. Disappointment #1 Came back for ramen and it was simply unremarkable noodle and salty broth soup made to be filling, and nothing flavorful or elegant. Disappointment #2 Came back for sashimi and half of the fishes were cut abnormally where it looked like they cut between an incomplete cut (jagged). My first thought before trying it was, they tried to give us a botched cut or left over. Upon trying it, the fishes were mushy/soggy and tasted like water similar to the texture of fish/meat thawed, re-frozen, and thawed again. Very bad quality and preparation of the sashimi here. Worst I've ever had. This experience made me never want to come back to Kome again. I'm alot better off buying a pound block of sashimi-grade tuna from Central Market for much, much higher quality than at the same price I paid for slivers of mush at Kome. Why not raise an issue or send it back to the kitchen? They should know better as any good restaurant than to serve that. read more

I tried the gyoza, miso, and a roll and enjoyed them all. The miso was especially good. It's a very cute building too. I wanted sushi, and mmmm...SUSHI. I got the sushi lunch and it was a pretty good deal--$13 for five different pieces of nigiri and a roll, plus some very tasty clear soup as an appetizer. The pieces were a little smaller than average, but they were fresh and perfectly bite-sized. You can see right into the prep area where all the sushi's assembled, too. I ate stuff here that I usually avoid because it's usually yucky. Kome seems to have the exceptions to the rules. The mushrooms in the clear soup, for example, just soaked up the mildly herbal fabulous broth to the point where they were a tasty treat. And sushi ginger? It's usually a nose-turning blob of pure ew, but this ginger tasted like it had marinated a bit more while pickling to where it was barely sweet and only a little sour to the taste. It was wonderful. I want to come back here and eat all the things. All the things. All of it. If they can make sushi ginger a delectable treat, I'm convinced that Kome can make pretty much anything delicious. The dining room is a bit loud, but it's bright, open and clean. Service was quick and attentive, which was a bit of a marvel at lunch time. The menu had a little bit of everything--noodles, tofu, fried chicken, fish brought over from a market in Japan, an extensive list of rolls, etc., etc.--so everybody's bound to find something to eat here. read more

I LOVE this place! This is my go-to sushi restaurant when I remember my food and drink tab at Uchi and decide that this is for the best. What I enjoy about Kome is that they don't have the same cookie-cutter rolls that other sushi restaurants have. You know what I mean, the dynamite roll at one restaurant is the same dragon roll at another. When other sushi restaurants may as well be part of the same chain restaurant, Kome always shows off delicious, fresh, relevant flavors! Also, I can be a little bit of a traditionalist when it comes to food, so getting some true, authentic flavors in foreign cuisine is always a plus! They have very well made Japanese favorites like takoyaki, okonomiyaki, yakiniku, and so much more! Its traditional without being boring! They do it well! **Atmosphere: 10/10** Quaint, cozy, small, and well organized! The building itself is small, but they've arranged the tables in the space to fit more people, yet not feel cramped. They also have nice sushi bar seats, a private room, and outdoor seating! If you're waiting, like we were tonight on a Saturday, they have a cocktail waitress delivering drinks to keep you cool or warm while you wait! **Service: 10/10** So kind and helpful! Our waiter Dustin was a very excited guy, and I love being greeted and helped by someone who truly wants to help! He was so good that I didn't even realize his ninja tactics until I was already drinking out of a refilled glass! I love this place! **Food: 20/10** Seriously! In a market where you have to be innovative or get trampled, Kome really holds their own with their delicious traditional-style food! Don't get me wrong, I love a good fusion restaurant who can work magic with their flavors, but I really crave a good traditional place or two! Tsukemono 10/10! I always love the sour, salty, peculiar flavor of Japanese pickles. Theirs are strongly flavored, which is great! I wish they had more takuan, or pickled daikon, in the bowl! Okonomiyaki 10/10! Japanese savory pancake with deliciously cooked cabbage inside drizzled kewpie, tonkotsu, and bonito on top? Yes! I will take the lot! Seriously, this is one of my favorite Japanese foods, and Kome makes them super well! The inside is perfectly cooked -- not too soft and not too dry. Great flavors! Takoyaki 10/10! Delicious! Very very hot, so be careful when they first come out! The octopus inside is perfectly cooked! Not chewy at all! Kaki Fry 10/10! Fried oysters! This came with an amazing, garlicky tartar sauce. Natto Roll 10/10! I don't love natto, but I always try it, hoping that I'm just doing something wrong or I have the wrong brand. I had never seen it in a roll before, so I got it! Pretty alright if you ignore the texture. It's like eating sushi that has soft, flavorless peanuts inside of it. Interesting texture. I'm sure that if I liked natto, this would be a great roll. Decided to try this place after a drunken night because I was craving hot soup but didn't want to get the usual Pho. My experience at Kome was beyond my expectation. I never visited a ramen restaurant in the US before and Kome being my first in the states is perfect. I got the tonkotsu ramen and the broth is sooo good! And the pork was cooked perfectly, not dry at all. Their sushi selection is also very good, my friend tried a couple of their rolls and we were all pleasantly surprised at the size at these rolls. To sum it up, best ramen ever, almost up to par with what I had in Asia :) read more

Went to finally try the ramen and had the lunch sushi special. RAMEN: I was in LA for 2 years, where people can not fathom a city, or even a neighboorhood, without several ramen shops. Like specifically restaurants that only serve ramen. So I have very high expectations for ramen. (Check my reviews if you want a ramen rec in LA). Overall I liked Kome's ramen, BUT it's definitely not normal ramen. Mainly it's the toppings that they put on the ramen that are different. I ordered tonkotsu ramen and it was pretty good, just not as fatty or thick as most tonkotsu's are. But, I kind of liked the lighter flavor. So, yes it's not typical ramen, but it's still yummy. read more

They've always accommodated me when my friends and I come in. We get a private room since of how large our group is (10 people) and we've always enjoyed it. I absolutely love their ramen. The flavor with the broth, delicious! I always get the Tonkotsu ramen: pork broth, bamboo, pork belly, corn, egg, fish cake, and more in there! This place gets once of my rare 5-star reviews. Truly impressed with the quality and selection. Be forwarned that when they tell you the dishes are small and meant to be shared...order one or two first. we made the mistake of ordering 3 rolls, and about 5 or so other things and boy o boy...we were absolutely stuffed. Unfortunately its been a couple of weeks since I was last there, so I don't remember all of the specifics of what we had, but EVERYTHING we had was stellar. I did have the grilled squid which is quite a bit of food by itself. If you love sushi, and don't want to be an entirely crazy amount, do yourself a favor and try this place. Its worth every penny! My husband and I have been looking for a ramen place, but we thought one didn't exist in Austin. Good thing I found this place on yelp. I mentioned that Kome had ramen and he was sold. We are so glad we went! The ramen was delicious! I got the spicy miso, my husband got the tonkotsu ramen and we shared the katsu teishoku. Both of us LOVED our ramen.... it reminded us of ramen we had while visiting Japan. The broth is flavorful and they add a variety of toppings (half an egg, bamboo, seaweed, etc). I wish they gave a bit more ramen, but its fine. I usually don't drink my soup but I practically finished my spicy miso! Yes, it was that good! The katsu teishoku is the best I've had. I normally order it when I go to sushi restaurants because I don't eat raw fish. The breaded pork was fried to perfection and very fresh. It came with a side of spinach salad, bowl of rice and a tiny bit of pickled napa cabbage. The restaurant was nice and clean. Parking lot is small and a bit hard to get in and out. To make it easier, we parked on the street. My husband and I craved the ramen right when we got home. You know we will be back for sure! read more

How does this place only have 4 STARS? My friend took me for my birthday and I felt like I was back in Tokyo and NYC. This place does the hybrid correct. You will not find the Mango bullshite. Peasant Japanese done right. I would have not been able to spend as much on myself as my friend did but the prices are really right in line and this will be my go-to visitor location. The warm Octopus salad made me wilt. So great! read more

Not sure what to say about Kome that hasn't already been said. First, the quality is just amazing. My family isn't as adventurous as I am, and typically stick to the standard sushi fare: California rolls, maybe a dynamite roll, they love the specialty Longhorn roll... But, I've been able to venture through their menu quite a bit and just keep getting pleasantly surprised. Recently, I tried their octopus fried "Rangoon" style dish. Holy flavor bomb...I had no idea what to expect an it was just a smoky, crispy/creamy blend with the octopus inside the pocket of this scrumptious morsel! You get six or so...so, it's worth the $5, or whatever. My Fam doesn't dig on octopus (yet), so I got it all to myself....yeah, boyyy! Secondly, their ramen by far beats out tatsuya, I think I read they aren't so much competitors, but still...I'd rather spend my money on this ramen. I love the spice, could even use a bit more, but their spicy tatsuya is filled with flavor AND all the goodies are already included in the $8.50 price point. No $1 here or there for corn or garlic or egg...nope, already in there man! Further, the staff is cool and friendly, I like their added Japanese greeting and salute on the way out the door...makes one feel like it was more than just shuffle in/shuffle out patronage. Regardless of all if these added benefits, it's always packed and I dig their paging with the cellphone activator. Nice and simple. This is a great little off the beaten path restaurant in Austin! My first time visiting this establishment while on a business trip to Austin. I had the sashimi sampler which was quite tasty. The fish was quite fresh and a pleasure of the palate. Coupled with the fresh Miso Soup with delicate pieces of tofu with an excellent broth. The sushi rolls shared at the table were a bit of interesting fusion for me. The Austin roll was exquisite with overtones of beef even though there was no beef in the roll! Interesting flavor combination. The Infused Sake's enriched the dining experience. I will be back for this very casual, down home dining experience. read more

Origato Kome-san! I can't imagine rating this place any lower. It is the best sushi restaurant I have ever been to. Their sushi is great, the appetizer I had (octopus in raw egg with some greens) though not for the faint of heart was excellent, and the attitude of the restaurant is very nice especially for an upper class sushi bar, the type is usually filled with Affliction sporting amateur body builders and the parking lots with BMW's. I have only been once but of the three rolls my dad and I tried we were in total agreement that our socks were thoroughly rocked. Can't remember the names, as it was a haze of self-indulgement and excellent sushi, but I doubt you could go wrong with any of them. There were plenty of options for those of you true blue sushi lovers, that know real sushi doesn't have cream cheese in it. I will be back as soon as I have a date, or a tax break. read more

Ordered salmon sashimi, Botan Ebi, Sea urchin nigiri, and a rice paper roll (forgot the name). Everything was fresh and tasty but I liked the botan ebi the most. I highly recommend! I wanna come back and try their Chirashi though! read more

After going to tatsuya for the first time the weekend I was in Austin, I went on a ramen binge. My friend took me here on a Saturday or Sunday for lunch. We got to the restaurant before it opened, so she drove around, did some errands, and we ended up coming back about 15 minutes after they opened. The small parking lot was already full, so we parked on the street, which was also filling up. Despite the full parking lot, there were still a couple tables and spots at the sushi bar! We were seated at the sushi bar immediately and looked over the menu. I like that the menu had a nice amount food and was not overwhelming with 50 different items. I ordered the shoyu ramen and asked them to make it vegetarian for me, which they gladly did. I also ordered tamago nigiri, which is one of the best I've had. It also came with the word "kome" printed on it, which was cute! The shoyu ramen was amazing. I love how light the broth was, but how the ramen was still filling. The toppings I had were tasty (vegetarian, not the original toppings!); my favorite is the sweet tofu slices! You really get your money's worth with the portions too. The ambiance and atmosphere of the restaurant is nice and laid-back, and I love how it isn't cramped with back-to-back seating. I will definitely come back the next time I visit Austin. read more

This great new addition to the Airport Blvd. dining options specializes in "Japanese comfort food" and sushi. I highly recommend the daily farm salad as a starter. It was filled with locally sourced veggies and fruit, with a light delicious plum dressing. This miso soup of the day was very good. The sushi was very fresh and of high quality. The rolls are made up of the same great quality fish and other creative ingredients. The Crunchy Dynamite roll (spicy tuna and avocado) took basic sushi 101 ingredients, but then deep fried the rice in tempura batter for a tasty crunchy texture. The Superfly Roll (BBQ eel, salmon skin, cucumber) added masago roe and yamagobo (pickled burdock root), along with the branded lightly savory and slightly sweet "go-go sauce". The lunch plates are are a great deal, as they come with the wonderful farm fresh side salad, soup and rice. The panko fried oysters plate is my favorite: it comes with three jumbo deep-fried oysters on the half shell and what makes this dish amazing is the homemade "tartar sauce" (low on mayonnaise, a creamy soup-like texture, with a hint of sweetness). The edamame was very fresh, perfectly steamed and with just the right amount of salt. If you want to be "wowed" try the camembert (a cheese similar to Brie) tempura with honey. Then thank me later. This is my second visit to Kome and I'm fan for sure. Both times we have sat at the Sushi bar all of our interactions with staff have been great. This time I tried the Monkfish Pate. You need to try this! It was such a stand out from everything else I tried. The sushi i is fresh and delicious, but pretty standard. This time I tried the baby octopus, the flavor was great, but on the chewier side. Which I expect, it's octopus. When I'm in the area and looking for some yummy treats I'll stop in.
