This used to be our favorite place. I feel the food the declined over the years. It's overall good standard japanese sushi and food but not a standout . It was nice that they gave my daughter a free mochi dessert for her birthday. The service was good overall. I did have to remind our server that we were still waiting on one side dish. I'm a fan. It's a little dark and a little loud but service is sweet and efficient. Really enjoyed the apps (fried baby octopus and fried oysters). I'm a nigiri guy. Better half is a sashimi gal. The sushi here is great quality. I also ordered the curry nanban and I wish the shrimp tempura came on the side, I'm personally not a huge fan of tempura soaked in my broth. The curry broth is a little thinner than I expected but was still pretty good. I absolutely loved all the pieces of nigiri I ordered (escolar, hotate, sake aburi, chu toro). Musashino is one of our favorite sushi spots in Austin. We enjoy coming here for date nights and when friends are in town. Their sushi is consistent, fresh, and beautifully presented. Some of their rolls are a bit more fusion-y, but they are still delicious and worth trying if you're feeling adventurous. Personally, I would recommend ordering their nigiri (get any of the sushi or sashimi deluxe entrees) as I think sushi is best in its purest form, and they execute it so well. The Japanese decor creates a lovely dining experience. We enjoy being able to see the sushi chefs behind the counter. Service can sometimes be slow when they're busy. If you don't have a reservation, it would be smart to show up right when they open at 5:30 PM. read more

I came to Musashino around 6 months ago, and really enjoyed the food, but my recent visit fell flat. We opted to sit outside to avoid an hour long wait, but the service was especially slow and they barely checked in on us throughout the meal. Normally it's not a big deal, but we were getting bit intensely by mosquitoes outside (so be aware if you dine outdoors in the summer). Onto the food, we ordered the age tofu that was pretty solid - a nice shareable dish. The super deluxe set was a bit disappointing. There was just too much rice, and the texture was very grainy and almost undercooked. The fish was ok, not as good as I remember and some pieces were very chewy. I think this could a be solid sushi restaurant if they were more consistent in their quality, and either hired more staff or made sure to check in more frequently. read more

The sushi here is absolutely amazing. The size of the sashimi they give is also very generous. The staff are also very welcoming and the venue is warm with really good vibes. The only thing that was lacking for me was the dessert. They had 3 options and if you're someone who has gluten intolerance, there wasn't a great option. Keeping the Edomae (Edomeaezushi) style intact from Japan, it's a staple of Austin, and when we barely had sushi spots then, they were a pioneer in many ways. Let's get into the review. Pros: - Yelp's Waitlist worked well - Dedicated parking lot - Friendly staff - Quick reservations (called) - Food was delicious Side Notes: - Call for reservations - Yelp's Waitlist worked well - Closed on Mon and Sun - Limited hours (check on Yelp) - Don't order directly from chefs - Average prices around the area - Order takeout (do it in advance) What We Got: - Hot Green Tea - Avocado Kama - Tori Karaage - Big Southern Roll - Toro Taku Hand Roll - Unagi Hand Roll - A5 Wagyu - Ton of Nigiri Summary This place is always somewhere where the quality stays mostly the same. Opportunities/Misc: It would be great to talk to the sushi chefs and order from them, but they are busy pushing food out. They will interact from time to time, but I love that interaction, so I wish we could order from them directly (ops nightmare, I know). We also ordered takeout for our mom, and that took a bit longer towards the end, so be prepared to call/order in advance so you are good to go when you are ready to leave. Again, it is one of the staples here in Austin. Even if I don't go every weekend, it's a place that holds a special place in my heart, as it was around when I was going to college in Austin. FYI for first time visitors, the restaurant is hard to locate as their is no signage pointing to where it is. It is located upstairs in the middle of the complex. I came with a group of friends and we made reservations online a week ahead for a Saturday. I believe they only take reservations if your group is over a certain amount. Beware of the strong pungent fishy smell when you walk in...it hit us right in the face. It subsided as we reached our table. The fish quality is pretty decent, they give large slices of sashimi than most places but the prices are a little above average. I got the deluxe combo that came with 10 pieces and a roll. I thought it was a decently priced. A few of us thought the ratio of rice with the sashimi was too much. We ordered a few appetizers, the tempura was excellent and chicken karage solid. I ordered a Tequila Daisy and it was a tad bit watered down, I tasted more of the Chambord and less of the tequila...not something I would order again IMO. I'll try a different cocktail on my next visit to see if anything tickles my fancy. read more

Awesome place hidden on the second floor of a shopping plaza. There is more parking in the parking garage behind the building. Definitely recommend making a reservation although you can join the Yelp waitlist. We joined the waitlist and arrived around 7:45pm on a Saturday night and got a drink at the bar while we waited (about 20 min at the bar, maybe 40 min total for 2 people). There is ample seating on the patio and indoors. It is very cute with tasteful decor. Our server Ashley was great and recommended some dishes. We got the Sushi Sashimi Combo, Texas Road Kill Tuna Roll, Shima Zushi, Suicide Salmon, and a Bluefin Tuna fatty version that our server recommended. Everything was so fresh and melt in your mouth. I loved our Musashino dinner and would have given five stars BUT the reservation system was not desirable! They wanted $10 deposit per person before you can make a reservation. We ended up walking in which worked out just fine! We will be back for sure because my sushi deluxe was delicious- great value for 7 pieces of fresh sushi and 3 pieces of spicy salmon served with salad and soup! It was very quiet when we came in at 530pm but filled up around 7pm. It was hopping on a Friday night! Our service was friendly even when Grace was serving many tables in a busy night! They have a dog friendly patio! We've always sat at their outdoor patio because of our pup. And it was perfect Al fresco weather last night. Finally made it here and barely had to wait for a table! First things first, this place is hard to find. No signage showing it's upstairs in this complex so a little weird. We started with the gyoza and the Champs sashimi with salmon. Sashimi was delicious, especially with the jalapeño soy sauce. We then got the Texas Roadkill which was so. Damn. Good. Then had the Ozzy roll which was also very tasty, and lastly ended with the negitoro roll - simple and delicious. As for Nigiri, the seared albacore was melt in your mouth good. I wish I could give this place a better a review but I was pretty disappointed by the whole experience. I would not recommend it. The ambiance once you find the place is nice. They have some cool Japanese decor around and a nice bar you can see from all the tables. They do not have a sign and they're located in a medical practice building on the second floor. Luckily you can hear the noise from the restaurant and the smells so it will guide you in if you've never been. We had a group of 9 under reservation and got seated right away. The service was very slow here. Servers took a long time to come take our orders and check on us throughout. A few girls ordered drinks and they came out scattered and slowly. Now for the food. Unfortunately it was very disappointing. The food is VERY overpriced here. I've had better quality sushi for much less. The Toro Taku just tasted like regular old tuna (granted good quality), but not specifically toro. The Beni Toro is deceiving! They just use REGULAR salmon, not actually toro (the fatty, usually underbelly part of the fish that's supposed to taste richer, more succulent texture and flavor.) This was confirmed by the server that it's not actually salmon toro despite the name. The miso soup is standard, certainly not remarkable enough to justify being $4. The only two things that didn't disappoint me were the salad and the ginger. They do use good ginger. On top of being disappointed by the food, they also took forever to bring the food and things did not come out together. The table waited 20 minutes before any soups/salads/ or appetizers came out. Then there was more waiting. After another 20 minutes 3 of the 9 girls got their entrees first. After another 20 minutes 4 of the girls got their entrees leaving a lonely two still waiting. The remaining two girls waited another 15 minutes before getting their entrees and they had the simplest entree orders of the whole table! One girl literally ordered one Alaskan roll, and the other ordered 2 traditional rolls. My total pre taxes and tip was $29.50 for 2 traditional rolls (6 pieces each), a miso soup, and a small house salad and I was not full. read more

Musashino was a very solid spot for Japanese fare. If you're looking for a lighter meal and care about fish quality, the Sushi Deluxe with 7 pieces of sushi and 2 pieces of futo maki hits the spot. You won't leave full but for only $40, I felt the price and value was very reasonable if you just wanted to satisfy a sushi craving. When I went though, they were short staffed so I wasn't able to try any of their cocktails which was a pity since those were all pretty reasonably priced too ($12ish). read more

This place is super average. Id say its pretty disappointing in comparison to all the yelp reviews. I got the rainbow roll, couple nigiris, edamame and karage. The karage wasn't fried enough and it was not crispy. The edamame was pretty much the only good thing (but how can you mess up edamame): sadly the nigiri here is like 80% rice. Its not worth it for the price i'd say and the roll was super mushy. The service was fast and good but will not be returning because of the food. There are plenty of other decent spots in austin. We honestly had to stop eating in the middle to go to our go to sushi spot instead -(definitely wasn't full yet) but our bill was close to 70$ already which is pretty steep even for austin. read more

One of the best-quality sushi places in Austin. This place screams authentic Japanese sushi - from the space to the menu, and most importantly, the quality. I recommend this place whenever someone wants a high-quality sushi spot in the city. They don't take reservations, so in order to avoid a long wait, you'd have to get there right before they open. Otherwise, you may end up waiting for quite some time, but it's worth it, I promise! Don't come here if you're just trying to satisfy a tiny bit of sushi craving. Come here for the experience and amazing food! I typically like to get the sashimi platter, which is good to share between two people. You can get a side of sushi rice if you'd like to make it more filling, but I think this is a great way to try their sushi selection. We've been pretty sushi deprived due to the pandemic and was hyped to try out this place. Parking in the garage was easy and free, and finding the restaurant on the second floor wasn't bad. We joined the online waitlist and didn't wait very long to get a table. The staff was excellent! We ordered the Sake Kama Shio Yaki (grilled salmon cheek), Escolar Kushiyaki, and Sushi/sashimi combo. Let's start with the good: the sushi. The pieces were big and flavorful. The tuna was super tender and the tasty oils from the escolar coats your tongue. Quantity and quality was good and fits the cost. The miso soup was also surprisingly good. Now for the not-so-great: the appetizers. The salmon cheek wasn't as fatty as I expected and overall was like eating medium-well salmon. The Escolar Kushiyaki had a nice char, but the fish itself wasn't very tender. Both apps weren't bad, but not worth the price. Overall, this is a good, solid place for sushi. read more

Musashino is THE spot to go to for sushi in Austin. I've been to most of the big sushi spots in Austin, and this is hands down my favorite. While being more affordable than others of its caliber, Musashino tops the freshness department for me! Delicious, flavorful fish, and I love the wasabi layer in between the nigiri. Took my friend here for her birthday and ordered from big eye tuna to king salmon to wagyu, and they were all heaven in my mouth. I was really happy with the amount of fish provided on each order, since other places sometimes give very flimsy nigiri. My affordable favorites was the big eye tuna and Suicide salmon(spicy) and yellowtail cheek. My all-time favorite had to be the wagyu, oh my god it was a memorable bite to this day. It was melt in your mouth, rich, meaty perfection and totally worth the cost in my eyes. Better than the wagyu nigiri I had tried at another very well rated sushi restaurant. Additionally, I went again with others, and someone had ordered curry. Not gonna lie, it also tasted pretty good. Very much enjoyed my first dining experience here. Sat up at the bar having the chefs attention. Discussing the menu with my wife, a certain member from behind the bar caught onto our conversation about grilled squid which he was ready to toss one into the barbecue. Wow this is our new go to place. We've been to a handful of mid-range price sushi restaurants in Austin (can get a meal for under $50 per person) and this is by far the best one. The quality of the fish was top notch, the service was fast and friendly, and we had nice seating outside. The place can be difficult to find as its unmarked and on the second floor of a shopping complex. Update: we had such a good time we went back again the next night, except this time we were seated at the sushi bar. The service was incredible, with the chefs offering to pick out our nigiri and help us explore their best offerings while tailoring it to what we enjoy. They even threw in a complimentary appetizer (marinated grilled escolar which was amazing) and a few extra nigiri on the house. What an experience! Here's what stood out to me that I'd love to get again: Toro taku roll (great quality fatty tuna and texture of pickled radish) Hamachi Bin toro (seared fatty albacore with marinade) Nama sake Seared sake toro Cold smoked escolar with lemon and black pepper They also really surprised me with their scallop nigiri, which I thought I didn't like. We have been together for almost 7 years and it's still our favorite place to go for every anniversary, Valentine's Day and birthday dinner. The food is high quality and I've never had a bad dish here. The servers are nice and the ambiance is amazing. I brought my dad and sister here and they said they loved it as well. Some of favorites are the Sushi Regular which is the chefs choice of 7 nigiri's and the shima zushi nigiri is amazing. As far as rolls go the black widow is amazing.
