They had 3 food trucks available on day of my visit, but I had eaten already. The variety of food trucks is nice. We were promptly greeted by 2 staff. I had one of their hazy ipas and it was amazing. The inside was cozy and comfortable. They had bar seating, tables, and couches available. It all felt very welcoming. They had outside tables too, but it was raining. This location too had a ton of non alcoholic options too which is very inclusive. ( Sodas, kombucha, and even chocolate milk!) I saw signs for trivia too. Great spot!

We shared and got to taste each other's sandwiches. Both were spot on and satisfying. We especially appreciated the au jus that came with the French dip. It was tasty and not overly salty like so many other places. My hubs actually drank some of it after we finished the sandwich, it was that good! Neither of us drinks beer but we ordered their home brewed root beer and it was great. Very flavorful and not too sweet. Highly recommended. I guess it's a place I'll have to come back to time to time. This place is more known for their sours. I have to agree. The strong blueberry one was really good. It was packed with flavour, thanks to the blueberries. Some of the other fruit sours were a bit of a miss. I had high expectations for the strawberry one but didn't really get strawberry unless I thought about it... My fave thing about their flights are the drink cards that go behind each flight glass. It was a nice touch to be reminded of what you got and read the vision behind the drink. (Almost wish the photos weren't of the cans but more of a moodboard to convey the flavour's vibe).

While in Victoria, BC during a port stop on a cruise we went on an Ale Trail excursion and the…read morefirst of three stops was Whistle Buoy. Talk about hitting out of the park with the first stop! Whistle Buoy is located in a Market Square that's a beautiful open air area surrounded by shops, boutiques, restaurants, assorted businesses, and vast tracts of land with chairs and tables. Since it's surrounded by buildings on all four sides the wind would be challenged to ruffle your hair once inside. For this stop of the Ale Trail excursion we were each allowed one glass (not a taster...a full 12oz glass) of one brew. They have roughly a dozen taps that run the typical gamut of beer styles. I immediately gravitated toward the Shaft Coffee Stout. Not my usual go-to, (I'm usually more of an IPA / Pale Ale kinda guy) but something about "Dark. Coffee. Chocolate" grabbed my attention (Here's the part where Jim has an advantage. Jim's wife doesn't drink beer, so Jim gets her selection, too, so she (ok, I) chose the Froth Hazy Pale for hers (ok, for me).) I didn't expect the highlight of the excursion to be the very first beer I had, but the Shaft Coffee Stout was quite possibly the best beer I've ever had. It was smooth and rich and had such an amazing flavor. Honestly, it was more like dessert. I'm not saying my wife's beer (ok, my 2nd) wasn't awesome, it's just that the Shaft set the bar REALLY high. ( I'm just talkin' 'bout Shaft! ) Our group sat in the outdoor, covered beer garden, the weather was slightly overcast, and we were surrounded by like-minded beer lovers (except my wife, who donates to my cause.) As we sat the Market Square was busy with life as people walked their dogs, visited businesses, and a group of elementary school kids was escorted through the square. Sometimes it's nice to sit back and watch the world go by. The restrooms (gender neutral, thank you) are small...ok, tiny. There's barely enough room to change your mind. I do have to call attention to two things, though. First, it has the tiniest sink I've ever seen. Surely this thing had to be custom made. Second, they have a Code of Conduct posted on the wall, which I genuinely appreciated. Nothing outrageous, just a focus on respect and common decency. If I were able to get Shaft Coffee Stout at home I'd never leave home (actually I would just to get more Shaft Coffee Stout). It was only a brief visit to Whistle Buoy Brewing, but if I ever found myself living in Victoria, BC, there is no doubt this is where I'd hang out.

They've got a great selection of malts, hops, flavouring, and equipment. Additionally, they sell homebrew starter kits for a reasonable price for the budding homebrewer. They've got a small selection of great books on homebrewing to help you learn the ins and outs. A great and unique feature here is the bike powered malt grinder! It makes you work a little for your beer, and I think that makes it taste better.

There is a nice big patio outside. Most importantly this location faces N, which means the entire area is under shade during the summer months. Interior is themed like a vintage fort (Fort Langley?), with plenty of wood and murals of forests along the walls. In keeping with the theme, the inside tables were mostly wobbly. I kid. If the owners are reading this review, please fix this. My friends and I had to change tables until we found one that wasn't. Besides the beers, they have some 3rd party snacks like chips, pepperoni sticks. They also have some pub type food as well. Beers are pretty decent. One thing I should mention is that their tart cranberry ale is seriously tart. More so than any other berry ale I can think of locally. One sip and I was shruddering. Will be back at some point.
