I had to poor my glass of water into it to make it edible. My husband ordered the yakisoba, he thought it was okay, but it was covered in green onions and was made with glass noodles and he doesn't care for either. The place was busy and so we didn't get much service, it seemed like the bartender was also serving everyone. The music was entertaining, though. The Singapore Sling cocktail was aaaaaaamazing! The second one was even better ;) We tried a few appetizers and WOW were they good! Tops was the pork belly and watermelon. The chicken wings were huge and nicely spicy!!! And the pinch bao buns (we did the veggie ones) were good but did need a good dosing of the yummy sauce it came with. This place is absolutely fantastic. The beers were great, the kombucha, that you can get all over the place in the us! Is fantastic. The service is friendly, attentive, and all around fantastic. We went to another place that serves ramen on this trip and it was absolutely atrociously bland. Their red volcano listed as super spicy lacked all seasoning whatsoever including anything remotely spice. Kombucha on the other hand had a great flavorful pork broth that was utterly fantastic. The choice of soba noodles went along the theme of the Hawaiian focused menu, but... seemed a bit heavy for an already heavy pork broth mix. It was still and absolute save from the other place. Kombucha A+. Food A+. They had 4 kombucha's rotating that day. The Gold was probably my favorite. It had an undertone of ginger flavor that was not too overpowering, and there was not a pungent flavor like how some kombuchas are. For food I had the soup of the day which was red pepper at the time. Super tasty, and a great little snack if that is what you're in the mood for. The salmon costini was probably my absolute favorite though! Such a simple dish but so delicious at the same time. Also the presentation boards that most of the food is served on is such a great touch to having something unique about the cafe. Although we were too full by happy hour, all the tacos coming through looked so good! I sat at the bar next to where the waiters pick up food to be served and I think that was the only think i saw for a solid hour were tacos being made. Definitely something to try next time. Other than food, customer service was also fantastic. My first kombucha was a very flat, so the bar tender was kind enough to switch out the keg for a fresh batch. Also everyone was super friendly and attended to you very well. Ambience is great! It's a perfect place if you need to study with a drink during the day. Kombucha! I actually really like it but don't get it that often. It just has to hit me just right. Kind of like a cider but I am almost always glad that I had it when I do. This is my very first kombucha brewery that I have been to and it was very exciting! They had a whole range of flavors to pick from but since we were on a beer drinking marathon only one drink. I got the Green Jasmine Kombucha which was excellent! I was tempted to get their mint one as well but temptation was curbed. The address is 1155 North State Street but it is a little tricky to figure out. Where the doors are with the building number up front is not where you go into the place. You need to turn to your right and go down the side street. If they are open they should have a sign out on the sidewalk which will help give you direction as to how to get to the place. It isn't that hard really, just a heads up. read more

My fruity flavor, I forgot which fruit it was, tasted like just regular unflavored kombucha (the kind you first get when you separate the scoby from the freshly brewed kombucha, before you second ferment it with something to differentiate the flavor; I used to brew my own when I wasn't traveling) and my boyfriend's ginger kombucha tasted the same--no ginger flavor whatsoever. But it was a nice refreshment nonetheless as it was so hot outside, and the price was low (the places I'm used to going to outside of WA charges double for kombucha). Unfortunately, the super loud trivia guy ruined the atmosphere (he was, I guess, taking a break when we first showed up and ordered). I get it if it's a busy nice and you've got a rowdy crowd, but there was only one small table of two women participating. The volume was too much for a mostly empty place and we tried to hide out in the other room where the arcade games were. Last Friday evening we went to Kombucha Town to place a take out order for our party of 6, family birthday celebration. I understand during COVID to expect delays with orders and I totally want to support businesses during the Pandemic, so that didn't bother me. To the woman taking orders that night, YOU SHOULD NOT BE IN CUSTOMER SERVICE. If you don't have the patience to handle large orders, then maybe let someone who really needs a job, take yours. All the menus posted here are obsolete and I could not find a menu online, so everyone had to change their orders at the last minute. I heard the mac & cheese is really good, but I don't recommend for take out - gets a glue-like consistency - so should be eaten on site or right away. Had to order burgers without fries since they ran out and my south western jackfruit wrap that I had to settle for, was a disappointment. I really wanted to like this place, but will need to wait until the next time I am back in B'ham. read more

The food here can be really hit or miss, but overall it is not spectacular. If having your food served on a chunk of wood is more important than the food itself, then this is the place for you. One redeeming factor is that they usually have a great selection of beer to choose from. I'm cross-posting this review with Culture Cafe because I wanted to give Kombucha Town a higher rating. Here is my full review of both: I am mixed about this place...it's a trendy, funky space that is very inviting. I am inclined to give the Kombucha side of the house 4 stars. Nothing like a cold, draft booch and there was a decent variety of flavors. I tried the original ginger and it was pretty tasty. Culture Cafe, however, is where my review heads south. My boyfriend tried the burger and mac n cheese...the burger was pressed so firmly that it was chewy and had a strange consistency and it tasted more like sausage than a burger. It was also way too small for the huge bun that it came on. The mac n cheese was ok, but it was swimming in milk (very "liquidy" and not creamy), which was off-putting. I had the kale caesar (which was actually romaine) and tomato soup. The salad was decent enough, I liked the crisp, fresh lettuce, but the caesar dressing was a bit too fishy. The tomato soup tasted like and had a texture as if there was some type of grain in it (which wasn't good or bad, just strange) and it was quite acidic and bland. I might return to have a glass of booch and enjoy the atmosphere, but I likely won't eat there again. read more

I have been wanting to visit this place since I really love kombucha, even brought a growler to fill up. The place is nice and the food is delicious here. Everything was fine except for the staff was inconsistent with the pricing of the growler fill. One person said they didn't know the prices and asked. Came back and said it's $9 for any size growler. Next time I visited with the growler the guy charged me $12 for a 64oz growler.... Which is their NORMAL price of $3 per 16oz. read more

Wrote another review for Culture Cafe, came for a Yelp event. The owner Chris was very gracious in hosting us and providing our party with some of his delicious, refreshing and tasty Kombucha. He even gave us a tour of the facility which was fascinating. The atmosphere is eclectic and fun, I love the expanses of glass yet the feeling of still being sub grade with the sidewalk coming down chestnut above the bar. It's a very fun space with great drinks and equally delicious food. I appreciate his business principles and his drive to operate in a sustainable fashion to provide a healthy and delicious product. This horrendous experience has compelled me to leave my first ever yelp review....the food took an hour (only one other table in the restaurant), we asked about how much longer and were told 10 more minutes. The other table also asked where their food was... they loudly stated we had a large order.... apparently three plates is a large order to them. When the food did arrive it was cold.....in the time we were waiting for food we saw the kitchen staff taking smoke breaks and chatting outside. The chef came out and talked to us seeming apologetic and said we would be "taken care of". In the end nothing was discounted and in fact we were charged more than the menu prices. Needless to say we will not be coming back and will be spreading the word of their atrocious customer service. read more

Finally tried Kombucha! The culture cafe at Kombucha Town is a fun spot on the back side of the Herald building centrally located in our non-stop awesome downtown. Chris gave some of us a tour of the ever expanding facility and gave us a little tutorial on the evolution of his Kombucha. It is organic, fermented sweet tea that can be made in many flavors. Try it- you'll like it:) Other beverages, cocktails and beer are Also available. Jullian is the chef and his menu consists of lovely fresh variety of soups, salads and small plates. During game night, I tried the chicken tacos -which included shredded kale, pickled carrots, roasted corn, cabbage, avocado, cilantro and pico de gallo. Have I left anything out? Lol Yes! We showed up early on a Sunday evening, hardly a busy time. The place was mostly empty, a few other people at the bar but that was it. There were 11 people in our group. We had no one greet us and no one came to our table. We finally went up to the bar to order. We stood there for a long while before we were helped. There was another couple who was also having trouble getting service. Finally, she took our order....no apologies for the wait or kindness. She was cold and all business. If I'm going to spend the money to go out, I want good food and good service. The food is original but not outstanding. The service is extremely lacking. My one and only time there was terrible. Apparently if you sit at the bar you still have to have gone through the little "order" window. That's fine, and I'd be happy to do so, but no one told me. The one bar tender, who was absolutely slow and not busy at all, just looked at us as if we were stupid. In the two opportunities he was standing next to us (doing nothing) and could have simply said "order here" and pointed at their misaligned sign, he instead chose to just look at us awkwardly and walk away. Why, yes! You can! If you haven't been into the Kombucha Town brewery yet, you should get yourself there, stat! You can even bring in those bottles you've been collecting in the corner of your kitchen from buying kombucha at the store or a cafe and get them refilled from the tap. And, as an added bonus, you get to meet the brewers and see how Kombucha is actually made. Also, learn a tad about how rad this business really is. So, it can be a delicious and informative visit.
