Whenever I need a gift, for any reason, the first place I stop is Komoda. I first met the owner when I lived in the neighborhood. Now, even though I have moved all the way across town, I make the trek regularly. Sherri, our kind owner, has an amazing way of making you feel like you are her favorite customer. She has an unbelievable memory and has helped me choose gifts for most of the members of my family. One time, my husband (who had only been in with me once before) stopped in around Christmas looking for something for me. Sherri not only recognized him, but remembered a necklace I was admiring the last time I was in. Who gives this kind of service any more???? Most items are very well priced and of excellent quality. She carries unique jewelry and even some art made by the locals. Great stationary selection, too. The gifts here are far more special than anything you will ever find in a chain. Kudos. read more

I've been getting the most unique and lovely gifts for myself, my buddies, and the women in my life from Sherri since she founded Komoda on Chicago Ave. and for years and years before when she was a principal of another shop (that is decidedly less fabulous without her). Sherri pours her heart into keeping a collection of remarkable items in a way that I can only describe as curating. In short (not so short), she's been the go-to source for books, plants, dishes, aprons, cards, lotions, soaps, fragrances, corkscrews, wallets, incense, japanese teapots and cups (!), and on and on for people I love every Mother's Day, birthday, Chanukah, and Christmas for a decade. Such a sweet store, in a really charming, historic retail space. Really thoughtful, interesting selection of gifts, as well as items you'd use every day. I'm sure that Komoda has enough reviews to keep people shopping here for eternity, but I just want to add my recommendation to the pile. I've been coming here about twice a year for 6 years. I do most of my gift buying at Komoda, because it has a little something for everyone, and because everything is well-priced and great quality. Although I don't come in all that often, Sherri always remembers me and takes the time to catch up with me. In such a big city as Chicago, it is hard sometimes to feel a sense of community, but Komoda provides just that. read more

Komoda is an awesome little shop with a vast array of aesthetically pleasing arts, crafts, housewares, oddities, books, greeting cards, gift ideas, incense, candles..you name it! I don't know what the location held before, but the interior has a sort of old-fashioned feel to it, with a modern, bohemian vibe coursing through. I unfortunately decided to first explore the shop just a few months before I moved out of the neighborhood (on Valentine's Day no less), but was very warmly greeted by friendly owner Sherri and her lovely co-worker Liz. I ended up buying some candles and incense that were both of high quality and reasonably priced. I mentioned a book I had recently illustrated, left a copy a few weeks later, and they were kind enough to put it on consignment and sold it within a few weeks! Komoda is a great little business and I highly recommend swinging through and savoring the warm, creative atmosphere and treasure trove of items for perusal and sale. read more

Totally the most amazing store in Chicago. I was in a panic because I had to be at a baby shower and was running 20 minutes. I went into Komoda for a last-minute purchase and the store owner was the most unbelievably awesome person in the world. Helped me find what I needed straight away, gift wrapped it with an amazing bow, etc. I was so completely amazed and impressed. You wont find a store like this in all of Chicago land. Sherry ,the owner, is wonderful and carefully hand picks all the items in the store. This shop is the best for buying gifts for others...and yourself :-) . Sherry is very kind and helpful and beautifully gift wraps anything for no extra charge. She has the most unique items and I guarantee, one visit and you will be back for more. This is a must see gift shop! Not only do they have unique items, the owner is hands on and makes great strides to help with gift ideas. I hit the mother load last holiday season here and found some incredible gifts. I stopped in a few weeks back looking for a specific item, and needed something quickly because I came up with an idea last minute and realized I was missing a basket for the gift's presentation. The owner was so helpful - she ended up finding exactly what I needed (which ended up being a basket she was using). She happily let me have it. I'm not writing this to encourage that she gives items to customers as we all know she has a business to run. This gesture made me a customer for life - not everyone goes out of their way like she did. Highly recommend this wonderful store!!
