Kona Calamari*
Angel S.

I usually do not post after having a negative experience but oh well, here we go: We were hoping to try out Ding How for Christmas Eve dinner but the wait was just too long for our kids. We decided to head over to Kona Grill at La Cantera instead. I made a reservation just to be safe and we checked out the menu on the way over. Upon arrival at 6PM, it was pretty empty and got seated a little earlier than our reservation in a large booth as requested, good start. Once we sat down we noticed how dirty the seats and floor were. No biggie, it was probably very busy earlier. Apparently, we were given the wrong menus but they matched what we saw online. While we were giving our order for what we already thought was overpriced selections, our server tells us we had the wrong menus and handed us special Christmas menus. We'll, after taking a few minutes to look it over, what we noticed what was a much smaller menu, with everything priced about 15-20% higher, for the same items. Huh? They had one Kids item, a $19 Turkey Plate and the lowest priced items for adults was the Sushi starting at $22. All of the apps were $25 and up, including the regular sized, and underwhelming Calamari. The menu was marketed as a special, limited time menu, but seemed like simply a limited, higher priced menu. My wife's Margarita was $17 and filled to the rim with ice. Just not a good value at all. I got the Steakhouse Burger and again, very underwhelming for the price tags of $29. My sons Fried Rice was $34 and was not a shareable item. If we knew this was the menu, we would have just waited at Ding How. My reservation did not mention the special menu and neither did the website, from what I saw online. Guess you live and learn...and I learned just to wait for what you really want. It was a blessing to be together and to afford a dinner like this. Times are are hard and we do not take it for granted at all. We appreciate the staff that we're working on Christmas Eve and hope they were compensated a bit more based on the higher priced items.

They have an amazing happy hour deal priced at $3, $6 and $9. The portions are the same so it's an amazing deal. My oldest daughter had the 1/4 cheese burger for only $6. The kid's menu is reasonable as well at $8. My daughter had two servings of Mac and cheese, shrimp tempura and oranges in her bento box. The drinks specials is a great deal as well. You can get a glass of moscato for $6. They offer happy hour during the weekday for lunch except for Monday. They also offer a daily night time happy hour that starts at 9pm. Service was great and the restaurant was clean and welcoming!

Impromptu plans to meet with my Alpha Chi Omega sorority sister Alexandria and her daughter, Christina, for lunch today. Alexandria chose @konagrill La Cantera for our lunch spot. I had the Salmon Poke Bowl with sushi rice and field greens. Alexandria had the KG Cheeseburger with bacon and fries. Christina had the Bento Box. Paige was our server. As always, the food was fantastic. Happy hour here is great for food and drink items. Weekdays until 6pm.

Our waiter was phenomenal. The rest well....i had a Bloody Mary off the brunch menu which came with bacon and a blue cheese olive which is the main reason I ordered it. I got neither. . I am not certain it was even zing zang mix as the menu stated. The shashimi was good as well as the chicken shrimp lettuce wraps, there was a huge dead fly in our lettuce. . We arrived about 11:30 am on a Sunday. The restaurant was very dirty. The floors were filthy, perhaps the cleaning crew didn't come in. The ladies bathroom was disgusting, toilets had fences around the bowl in the first two I went in and another hadnt been flushed. The carpet smelled like a dirty bar . Very disappointed in our experience and lack of management.

For the prices you pay you'd expect a lot more value. Majority of the cocktails will set you back at least $15. I do however always appreciate a restaurant with a mocktail options, but these were priced at $14. The restaurant seemed pretty dialed back on a Monday night. I got the feeling there was more to the ambiance that wasn't in full effect, lighting and such. Now the food was the true downfall. We came in just before the dinner rush and the food was really lacking. It's disappointing because on paper the menu looks great with lots of options. But My chicken sandwich tasted dry and not fresh. My friends felt the same way about their entrees. Ultimately, I prefer their North Star location. But neither one is a 5 star experience.

We walked in and wow the place is so clean, big and modern inside! We were impressed! We looked around and at the fish tank for a minute or more before being helped and were sat promptly. It took our waitress 6-8 minutes to come to our table by then we were ready to order. The waitress took our order and few minutes later we got our drinks and a few minutes after that our $16 cup of tomato soup and our $21 chicken satay. Both were very tasty and well prepared but pricey! Not too long after we got our entrees I got the macadamia nut chicken which was pretty tasty a well prepared, my wife got the KG sliders which were cooked well with nice French fries. We may have seen the waitress twice, we both ran out of drinks but just asked for our check and skipped dessert once we saw her again. The food is pretty good but way way overpriced and our service was subpar... we definitely will not dine there again with all the other great spots nearby.

We decided to stop by Kona while out shopping yesterday. We went a bit early (around 4pm) and were able to be seated quickly and outside since it was a nice day. Our server was great and got our drinks and food out quickly. We decided to share the calamari, and each order sushi. The calamari and food came out super quickly. Calamari was pretty solid, a few pieces that got stuck together and were a bit too chewy. Sushi was very good, my wife got tempura shrimp and I got the checkerboard. We also got a bento box for our little one. This honestly was one of the better kids meals we've seen. Only reason there's not a fifth star was cleanliness. The inside particularly needed some attention but even the small patio had quite a bit of dirt/litter on the ground.

Food: we had their chicken satay, yellowtail sashimi, chicken and shrimp lettuce wrap and their Kona stir fry with chicken. The chicken satay was our favorite, although we wished there was more chicken. The yellow tail sashimi with ponzu sauce and jalapeño was fine, nothing crazy. Shrimp and chicken lettuce wrap tasted good but the chicken was ground chicken while the shrimp was chopped so there was a weird mouth feel to it but the flavor made up for that. Kona stir fry wasn't bad but it wasn't great either. The picture shown was the entree split in half. Service: We went for " The Taste of Kona" menu but they were no longer serving that menu, the manager gave us a 20% discount for the inconvenience since it was still up on their website. Also, a second manager came to check on us and how the food was, which was nice. Ambiance: the place looked nice, it was a weekend so it was packed but luckily there was no wait time. Overall: It was a good afternoon lunch the total came to be about $105 before the discount. Portions were okay. Not sure if it would be my go to spot but it wasn't bad.

Wagyu beef fried rice. Too greasy and salty.

Service lacking host presence when you walk in. You can tell all the staff are disorganized and somewhat disgruntled. The floor was sticking to shoes when you walk on it- with probably grease, grime and dirt. If i wasn't so tired and hungry and with other ppl i would have walked out before being seated. The food was too greasy and too much soy sauce on the fried rice. You'll need a glass of water for each spoonful you eat. The table we sat at was right by the kitchen and one particular waiter ( or he could be the mgr) was complaining about work and how others don't try as hard as he does, etc and we could hear all this- such a drag and annoying to hear his constant lecture and complaints about work and his staff! Our waitress was nice though.

Prices don't match the food quality. Service was slow despite it not being busy. Food came out fast but the appetizer and entrée arrived at the same time. Atmosphere was just okay. Only worth it during happy hour.

I have been here a few times for happy hour. I really enjoy happy hour because I get to eat a few items for the same price as one. Drink prices are good as well. I will have to admit that their margaritas are not my favorite. They do taste like they are made with a mixer and I am sure they are. You can't go wrong with the sangria, beer or a glass of wine. During happy hour I never miss getting their avocado eggrolls. I always feel like I could eat the whole dish myself, but sometimes I have to share. This time I got the whole dish for myself, and then realized that it was too much. I also got the Bama roll. Both of those dishes filled me up good. When I go with a big group, we order all the sushi rolls on their happy hour menu and share them. They have happy hour till 6 o'clock and then reverse happy hour starting at nine. This restaurant is located in La Cantera right next to Barnes & Noble's. Parking is available on site, but it is at the mall so shared with the other businesses. They do have inside and outside seating. The hostess and our waitress were both friendly. I do like that. You can pay on their table side pad. You can divide your food individually versus split it versus pay for the whole thing.

Kona grill has the BEST happy hour. They have drinks and food items that are $3, $6, and $9. I got the chicken satay and the chicken & shrimp lettuce wraps. The chicken satay was delicious, filling, and only $3! The lettuce wraps were delicious like always. I also got the Kona calamari (not part of happy hour) It was perfectly cooked and had a yummy sauce with it. I like the spice that the shishito peppers adds to the calamari.

I would recommend going during their happy hour, their Bama roll (9 dollars during happy hour) and it was filling and so good! The waitress was super nice and the vibe was alright. Also I got their sake bomber and it came with huge beer (6 dollars), definitely worth the money. Only been once but will be back

We walked in without a reservation, and I really appreciate that they were able to accommodate us with outdoor seating. The patio had a fun, upbeat atmosphere and was a great place to spend the evening. The drinks were generally very well made, once they were prepared correctly. The food, however, was just okay. I had the cheeseburger with an egg, and while it was decent, it wasn't particularly memorable. The standout was definitely the fries, especially paired with the spicy ketchup. Unfortunately, the biggest issue was the service. Since we were seated outside, it felt like our table was forgotten. We sat for at least 15 minutes without proper plates, napkins, or silverware and had to ask multiple times before everyone was taken care of. We never had enough water glasses for the entire table, drink service was slow throughout the meal, and at one point I walked to the bar myself because my Old Fashioned had been made with agave and was far too sweet. I also had to track down our server just to get the check. Overall, I appreciate that they accommodated a large walk-in party, and the atmosphere and drinks were enjoyable. However, the combination of mediocre food and inattentive service left us disappointed. I don't think I'd return, as it felt like our table was simply forgotten once we were seated outside.

Immediately upon walking in I fell in love with the rustic yet elegant decor (those chandeliers tho). My girlfriends and I sat at the bar and enjoyed great service during our entire 3 hour visit there. The cocktail and bites we enjoyed were all delicious. During happy hour there are select cocktail and bites you can enjoy for $7 each. My drink of choice for the evening was the perfectly balanced Berry Smash . I was torn on bites but ended up going with the Happy Hour sliders and the pork belly appetizer from the regular menu. Both were soooo good...particularly the Pork Belly which was a perfect blend of sweet, spicy, and savory. This visit redeemed Haywire in my eyes and I'm looking forward to returning during regular hours to explore more of the menu during dinner service.

First for the atmosphere, it's a really nice environment during the day and most weeknights but weekends it's very loud and lively. Which is fine, but it is advertised as a speakeasy, but I would say its more of a loud bar vibe on weekend evenings. For service, it's generally pretty fast! You can order either at the bar or they can come to you. We usually prefer grabbing a seat if we can and order through a server. Definitely reccomend that but you might have to come a bit earlier if it's a weekend evenings. Servers are usually nice and helpful. In terms of the drinks they are great but I'll say you have to be very specific of what you like. I'm pretty straight forward so usually get a Moscow mule, mojito, or their kiwi express! All are awesome! However, I did ask if they could do a porn star martini. Passion fruit, liqueur, not too hard I thought... but they couldn't make it. I asked if they could just make me something w passion fruit instead and was told I could not. Very odd and usually they will make me a drink if I ask for it. Overall I think this is a fun place to go for a weeknight drink w friends or a bigger crowd for a livelier atmosphere for the weekend. I wouldn't deviate from the menu- they have plenty of options. You'll see us again! Thanks rock and rye!
