We both had the KG Cheeseburger and fries on a weekday afternoon for lunch. The burgers were very good, but it would have been nice to have a smaller option; we could each only eat half. The fries were absolute crack! I am absolutely anti-french fry, but these were amazing! i.could.not.stop.eating.them. Service was adequate, nothing to complain about really; everyone was nice and helpful, but really distracted and the conop here seems to be you scan with your phone for the menu and for the bill... but it's not intuitive and unless you eat at restaurants like that regularly, it's disorienting. My father with his hearing aids was not bothered by the music, but it was too loud for me; i had trouble hearing the wait staff and in conversation with my dad. I usually do not post after having a negative experience but oh well, here we go: We were hoping to try out Ding How for Christmas Eve dinner but the wait was just too long for our kids. We decided to head over to Kona Grill at La Cantera instead. I made a reservation just to be safe and we checked out the menu on the way over. Upon arrival at 6PM, it was pretty empty and got seated a little earlier than our reservation in a large booth as requested, good start. Once we sat down we noticed how dirty the seats and floor were. No biggie, it was probably very busy earlier. Apparently, we were given the wrong menus but they matched what we saw online. While we were giving our order for what we already thought was overpriced selections, our server tells us we had the wrong menus and handed us special Christmas menus. We'll, after taking a few minutes to look it over, what we noticed what was a much smaller menu, with everything priced about 15-20% higher, for the same items. Huh? They had one Kids item, a $19 Turkey Plate and the lowest priced items for adults was the Sushi starting at $22. All of the apps were $25 and up, including the regular sized, and underwhelming Calamari. The menu was marketed as a special, limited time menu, but seemed like simply a limited, higher priced menu. My wife's Margarita was $17 and filled to the rim with ice. Just not a good value at all. I got the Steakhouse Burger and again, very underwhelming for the price tags of $29. My sons Fried Rice was $34 and was not a shareable item. If we knew this was the menu, we would have just waited at Ding How. My reservation did not mention the special menu and neither did the website, from what I saw online. Guess you live and learn...and I learned just to wait for what you really want. It was a blessing to be together and to afford a dinner like this. Times are are hard and we do not take it for granted at all. We appreciate the staff that we're working on Christmas Eve and hope they were compensated a bit more based on the higher priced items. read more

The steakhouse burger:2.5/5 Way too small for 29 dollars, I ate it like a slider. Flavor was ok, bun was burnt. The fries were actually pretty decent, they had flavor and good texture. Big island ribeye(12oz):2.1/5 Also outrageously small for 48 dollars. It also didn't really taste seasoned. It didn't even taste like ribeye, which is weird given the lack of seasoning. On the bright side, the "ribeye" was somewhat tender. The crispy garlic fingerlings that came with it lacked garlic flavor. They were crispy though. Lemon garlic penne with shrimp add on:1/5 Penne was flavorless, and the sauce wasn't much better. The shrimp add on, which was 8 dollars, only provided 5 pieces of shrimp! Additionally, the cheesy bread that came with it was horrible. It tasted like frozen bread bought at a supermarket. Talk about a $39 dish! Definitely never getting this one again. Waygu steak fried rice:3.5/5 They actually use real Waygu beef, but only sparingly. Rice was seasoned well. Also came with an egg. Flavor was decent, not much to say here. This is one of the more solid dishes. Molten chocolate lava cake:2.5/5 Unfortunately small for a $16 cake. Came with peanut crumbles and peanut butter crunch. Presentation was nice, and the cake tasted alright. I've been complaining about the high prices, and the high prices could've been justified by great service or good ambience, but this restaurant didn't stand out in either category. Our waitress was busy and managing multiple tables, and somewhat frequently refilled our water. The service wasn't bad, it just wasn't able to justify the prices. The ambience could have been better, but the DJ sort of ruined the vibe. I understand this place is known for "vibe dining" but the DJ kept messing the music and the beat up in a way that the original song would've been better. I'm also disappointed in this category. They have an amazing happy hour deal priced at $3, $6 and $9. The portions are the same so it's an amazing deal. My oldest daughter had the 1/4 cheese burger for only $6. The kid's menu is reasonable as well at $8. My daughter had two servings of Mac and cheese, shrimp tempura and oranges in her bento box. The drinks specials is a great deal as well. You can get a glass of moscato for $6. They offer happy hour during the weekday for lunch except for Monday. They also offer a daily night time happy hour that starts at 9pm. I am not certain it was even zing zang mix as the menu stated. The shashimi was good as well as the chicken shrimp lettuce wraps, there was a huge dead fly in our lettuce. . We arrived about 11:30 am on a Sunday. The restaurant was very dirty. The floors were filthy, perhaps the cleaning crew didn't come in. For the prices you pay you'd expect a lot more value. Majority of the cocktails will set you back at least $15. I do however always appreciate a restaurant with a mocktail options, but these were priced at $14. The restaurant seemed pretty dialed back on a Monday night. I got the feeling there was more to the ambiance that wasn't in full effect, lighting and such. Now the food was the true downfall. We came in just before the dinner rush and the food was really lacking. It's disappointing because on paper the menu looks great with lots of options. We walked in and wow the place is so clean, big and modern inside! We were impressed! We looked around and at the fish tank for a minute or more before being helped and were sat promptly. It took our waitress 6-8 minutes to come to our table by then we were ready to order. The waitress took our order and few minutes later we got our drinks and a few minutes after that our $16 cup of tomato soup and our $21 chicken satay. Both were very tasty and well prepared but pricey! Not too long after we got our entrees I got the macadamia nut chicken which was pretty tasty a well prepared, my wife got the KG sliders which were cooked well with nice French fries. We may have seen the waitress twice, we both ran out of drinks but just asked for our check and skipped dessert once we saw her again. We decided to stop by Kona while out shopping yesterday. We went a bit early (around 4pm) and were able to be seated quickly and outside since it was a nice day. Our server was great and got our drinks and food out quickly. We decided to share the calamari, and each order sushi. The calamari and food came out super quickly. Calamari was pretty solid, a few pieces that got stuck together and were a bit too chewy. Sushi was very good, my wife got tempura shrimp and I got the checkerboard. We also got a bento box for our little one. This honestly was one of the better kids meals we've seen. Only reason there's not a fifth star was cleanliness. Food: we had their chicken satay, yellowtail sashimi, chicken and shrimp lettuce wrap and their Kona stir fry with chicken. The chicken satay was our favorite, although we wished there was more chicken. The yellow tail sashimi with ponzu sauce and jalapeño was fine, nothing crazy. Shrimp and chicken lettuce wrap tasted good but the chicken was ground chicken while the shrimp was chopped so there was a weird mouth feel to it but the flavor made up for that. The floor was sticking to shoes when you walk on it- with probably grease, grime and dirt. If i wasn't so tired and hungry and with other ppl i would have walked out before being seated. I understand prices have increased everywhere but what I ordered was not worth $32 before tip - chicken lettuce wraps, sweet potato fries and a sprite. The fries were good, but for $9, I was given a little metal basket that only housed about 10 fries. The chicken wraps had more filler (carrots/potatoes) than chicken with an over powering chili seasoning that was all pepper and no flavor. I couldn't get past one lettuce wrap. I have been here a few times for happy hour. I really enjoy happy hour because I get to eat a few items for the same price as one. Drink prices are good as well. When I go with a big group, we order all the sushi rolls on their happy hour menu and share them. They have happy hour till 6 o'clock and then reverse happy hour starting at nine. This restaurant is located in La Cantera right next to Barnes & Noble's. Parking is available on site, but it is at the mall so shared with the other businesses. They do have inside and outside seating. The hostess and our waitress were both friendly. I do like that. You can pay on their table side pad. When I saw they were accepting reservations through OpenTable, I booked a 7:15 PM spot and felt confident that we'd have a smooth experience. When we arrived, the restaurant was packed -- which we completely expected for a holiday. However, the waiting area was shoulder-to-shoulder crowded. Since we had a reservation, we figured we'd still be seated soon. Instead, the hostess told us there were 15 people ahead of us with reservations. That didn't make much sense, but we stayed patient and waited outside to avoid the crowd. After about 15 minutes, we went back in to check the status -- only to find out that the hostess had never even checked us in. At that point, we were frustrated and decided to leave. As someone who works in the service industry myself, I completely understand how hectic high-volume nights can be. But when guests take the time to make a reservation, that time should be honored or at least managed with proper communication. Unfortunately, this experience left my husband and me disappointed -- especially on a day meant to honor those who served. I literally could decide on anything because there was a dead bug in the square light features next to our table. Again, our son was excited, he told.the waitress it was his birthday. He was so excited about having the staff sing to him. He blissfully happy. We ordered drinks, a draft beer and flight of margaritas. The beer was hot and the flughts were undrinkable. They froze margarita slush sat on top of syrup. We asked the waitress to take the drinks back and ordered a traditional margarita on the rocks. It was so wierd, the bartender dropped of the drink and made a point to say, he filled it to the top, this one should be good. ​​ The margarita tasted like coconut. Couldn't decide if he made the wrong drink or used a dirty shaker. Given the cleanliness of the rest of the place it could have been the latter. I thought I just try a different type of drink so I ordered a lemon drop which listed hypnotic as an ingredient. So I was expecting to see a light blue cocktail. No, I had a sour lemon drink in a martini glass. I don't know what was happening at the bar, but it was all wrong. The meal sucked just as bad. The plates were very greasy and felt gritty on the bottom. My husband's ribeye steak was thin and fatty. My son didn't like his surf and turf. At the end of all that, the waitress hadn't taken off the flights we didn't drink or remember my son's birthday. He left feeling like crap. While we did try to save the day by going to cheesecake factory for desert, it left a cringy stain on his big day. To be honest no one should eat this place before it's deep cleaned. That place is a serious health violation. I don't know how they passed their safety inspections. Our tab $241, dirty establishment, dirty plates, dirty toast machine, 1 of 4 people got food poisoning. Never again will I dine at a restaurant that dirty, no matter how much the group I'm with insists. Really appalled by the whole experience. read more

Whenever I'm at La Cantera, this is my dedicated lunch spot! During certain times of the day, Kona will have happy hour where you have access to choose from the 3, 6, 9 dollar menu that even included alcohol. I usually order the Crab Crunch Roll and Angry Edamame. But I've also had the Kona Sliders and let me tell you, the fries are divine! Every time I'm here, I get seated immediately, even with a party of 4. Within 5-10 minutes, the server will introduce themselves and take out drink orders. Very fast and friendly service. Though, if you want to have quiet meal with some friends, this is probably not going to be the place. It usually has music playing, sometimes a little too loud and the place is usually packed with a lot of people talking. It's definitely not loud, but can be distracting if you're wanting to work or chat quietly. The shops and restaurants are right next to UTSA, so it could even be a place for students to work, if they were hiring! Overall, not a bad place for cheaper sushi and meals. Early 2000s R&B, we were loving it. The spicy tuna roll was good and the watermelon margarita so good all you need is one. I had the salmon for my entree and it was so good along with the fried rice. My child's bento box with 2 mini cheese burgers had a cute orange shaped as a bear he loved it and the tablet that he can play games on. Service was excellent our waiter Dominic was very attentive. I was so mad that we had barely missed happy hour when we sat down BUT our server was kind enough to let us each get 1 drink discounted since they were having a staff meeting while we were waiting. The burger tasted like frozen premade patties w/ no seasonibg. The bread was good. The anerican cheese was ok. My husband & I came in for a lunch date. He had never been to Kona before. His Michelob Ultra was tasteless even after the server brought him a replacement. The food was just ok. It's over priced in my opinion.
