Janie had the west coast panini (very tasty) and I had the tuna panini. Definitely one of the better ones I've eaten. It's full of flavor and even adding a little bit spicy mustard, it didn't take away from the flavor of either sandwich. This is a great place for happy hour to catch up with friends, as we seen many of the early crowd enjoy. They have plenty of outdoor seating if you're up to eating under a covered patio. I've been a Postino Wine Cult member for over a year and have consistently enjoyed coming here, which is exactly why tonight's experience was so disappointing. I came in for happy hour with two friends. We ordered drinks and food, used our coupons, paid our tab, and were having a great evening. After paying, we realized there was a special for a $25 bottle of wine and charcuterie board, so we decided we'd like to stay a little longer and order it. Our server happily took the order. Shortly afterward, however, he spoke with the hostess and suddenly we were told that we needed to leave our table or move because there were people waiting outside. What made the situation particularly frustrating was that we were already seated customers actively placing another order--not a group lingering at a table after paying with no intention of purchasing anything else. Other tables around us were not being asked to vacate, and when we asked for an explanation as to why we specifically needed to give up our table, no meaningful explanation was provided. We were simply told we needed to move or leave. I completely understand that restaurants get busy and need to manage tables. What I don't understand is accepting a customer's additional food and wine order and then immediately making that customer feel as though they are inconveniencing the restaurant by remaining seated long enough to enjoy it. As someone who has paid to be part of Postino's membership program for more than a year, I would expect loyal, paying customers to be treated with a little more hospitality and considerably better communication. If there is a time limit on tables, communicate it when guests are seated. If customers cannot place another order after paying an initial tab, don't take the order. But taking our order and then effectively asking us to vacate our table without a reasonable explanation was both awkward and unnecessarily dismissive. Unfortunately, what had been a really enjoyable evening ended with three customers feeling less like valued guests and more like a table that needed to be turned over. Postino, you're like that objectively attractive but utterly unreliable friend. My Wednesday night visit found the place busy, but not excessively so for a mid-week jaunt. A good, energetic hum. For the main event, we had the Cabernet Sauvignon and the skewers, both of which were excellent. Definitely, something to write home about! However, the signature bruschetta board was just okay. It did the job, but it wasn't a "knock your socks off kinda wow." A disappointing reality after such promising wine and skewers. The Real Drama: Service Here's where the four stars feel generous. The service was subpar. Almost absent. Our server seemingly mastered the art of camouflage. I'm not asking for constant hovering, but getting almost any service felt like negotiating a minor treaty. We sat down at the table which was dirty and the appetizer plates showed its ugly little face as one served dirty and one clean. When we finished our food and after a duration that could reasonably be considered a short film we finally had a server stop to ask how our food was. The answer was, almost gone. The Takeaway Postino, you have a lovely patio and excellent wine/skewers and lovely outdoor heaters. You're a solid C+ student in the San Antonio dining class. The atmosphere gets five stars, the service gets a stern talking-to but definitely not a "go stand in the corner" because they are already there instead of delivering the backed up drinks waiting at the bar. I recommend it for wine and a low-stakes evening, provided you have excellent patience. I'll bring a flag with my order written on it next time, just in case. read more
