First timer- date night dinner. It was very easy to get a reservation online. Upon arriving about 15 min early we were seated. Nicely kept older building feel. No cozy areas for couples but spacious. Service by Amy was excellent- she was very friendly and helpful. The complimentary bread and butter were delicious. The drinks were tasty. Be warned that many plates come very hot- a bit off putting when you smell butter cooking on your plate still. The crab cakes were lacking but the Salmon was tasty, simply seasoned. This was our first visit to a Ruth's Chris, and we were easily able to get a reservation online for Christmas dinner, about 3 weeks in advance. We were super excited to try the restaurant as we have heard amazing reviews and wanted something special for Christmas, and for our first visit to San Antonio. Upon arrival, we were quickly seated. Unfortunately we were sat in a table near the bar; not sure if that was because we had our 5 year old, just luck of the draw, or what. I was somewhat disappointed because the other part of the restaurant looked like it was more the vibe we were looking for. However, after being seated, I could hear that the other part of the restaurant was LOUD so I was glad. It was very dark (hence the not-so-great picture) but we were tucked into a nice corner area and there weren't any loud patrons at the bar, it was overall very calm and a good vibe with other families seated in the area. Then our server is who really made our meal special! I believe his name was Paul? (I could barely hear him and felt bad to ask again, plus the receipt didn't say.) He was AWESOME!! He explained the menu, made some suggestions, and got our order in QUICK so that our daughter wasn't waiting too long. Our drinks were never empty, he checked on us many times without being too much, and we were so glad to have him help us out. Two managers also stopped by to check on us, so I will say their service is great! The disappointment for me was the food. We ordered a ribeye cooked medium, the stuffed chicken, creamed spinach, and au gratin potatoes. The steak was more towards medium well. Being a ribeye we expected "well marbled" per the menu description, but there was no marble whatsoever. The meat itself had a good flavor, just not the cook or texture we expected. For $77 for 16oz, we were hoping for that perfect steak. The stuffed chicken was perfectly cooked. If you're a cream cheese fan, you'll love this dish, as it is the main/only flavor. The potatoes and creamed spinach were decent but nothing that would make me recommend either. For $186 for 2 entrees and 2 sides, I had hoped for much more. Overall I would say the vibe and the service were great and what one would expect from a "higher end" steakhouse. However, I would say expect chain-level food similar to Applebees, etc. only at a much higher price point. Again, this may not be 100% the fault of the location because the staff we interacted with were great, but a bigger issue with the restaurant chain in general. read more

We have never been to Ruth' Chris because of the price point. We decided to give them a try for Culinaria Restaurant Week because their menu did not include dessert. Our waiter took care of us, but I cannot recall his name. Looks like one of the Property Brothers. Not on the bill either. It wasn't too busy on a Saturday evening in mid August. It's a nice restaurant with plenty of parking and a respite from the heat. They have a nice bar and we found out they do have a happy hour during the week that may be a more affordable option. They have a full bar and I opted for a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. Although not asked for my preference, the waiter ordered me a $21 9 ounce pour. Nice wine list, but prices are pretty steep. My wife had a French 75 and a Jim Beam on the Rocks and those were what was expected at $13 each. We started with Caesar salads. Very nice size. I was left wanting for more of a garlic bite from the dressing like you find at Capparelli's on Main. The loaf of bread was hot and fresh and served with a generous amount of whipped butter. My entree was the 6 ounce filet on a 500 degree plate. That's hot. It was perfectly cooked to medium rare and kept warm as I ate it. My wife got the Shrimp Orleans over mashed potatoes. Very large shrimp and that sauce was so good. For sides we had creamed spinach and cauliflower au gratin. The spinach was awesome and so creamy. The cauliflower was uninspired. It was part of a cauliflower head with a little bit of sauce and then broiled. A little less done than al dente. When they say a vegetable is "au gratin" I'm thinking manageable cuts getting happy in a milk-cheese sauce. We put the leftover sauce from the Shrimp Orleans on it and brought it home to figure out how to make it better. read more

I finally got to see what all the hype was about! Ruth's Chris is very popular steak house who prides themselves on their method of cooking their meats (broiling). The restaurant has an Italian ambiance, with beautiful settings at each table (though I will say this made my clumsy self quite nervous). Our waiter, Josue, was very friendly and knowable about the menu and wine options. He was attentive throughout the meal, but did not overwhelm us with constantly coming to check in. Highly recommend him as a waiter! The menu is set up where everything is a la carte, so your main dish does not come with any sides. There was a wide variety of options to choose from. I selected the Petite Fillet (8oz) and it ended up being the perfect size. We were informed that the side dishes are big enough to share - so my mom and I split the potato au grautin and they were right about the portions. Only downside to the restaurant is the price, however it's to be expected with a higher end steakhouse. Definitely not in my budget to become a regular, though I will definitely consider it for a special occasion. This place is racist! We were the only black people there and experienced subpar service and meals. The steak I ordered was over cooked and very small. Another person in my party sent their steak back because it was undercooked. They took the steak back with a piece removed and put it back on the grill and brought the same damn steak out not a fresh steak. We are here on Christmas Day as a treat and it was fantastic. We've never been here and have always heard good things. We started with the Calamari appetizers and that plate was a meal in itself. They came with like a Thai chili/sweet sauce. We had the 11oz. Fillet medium rare and it was fantastic. It had a nice sear crust and inside was a perfect medium rare. My wife took me to Ruth's Chris and it was all that I hoped for. Mark was our waiter. He was knowledgeable and understanding of two oldies 89 and 87 with the results of three strokes. I wanted a full-bodies red by the glass. Mark suggested a Pinot Noir and a Cabernet Sauvignon with a brief description of each. My wife chose the Pinot Noir. Which surprised me because she doesn't like wine. I enjoyed my Cabernet Sauvignon but she didn't like hers. I started to taste both hers and mine. i loved mine and was preparing to pace myself and drink hers also. Just about then Mark appeared and asked her if she didn't like hers. She said "no". He asked her what she would like. She said a beer. He named their beers and she chose her favorite. Mark scooped up the Pinot Noir from in front of me. I was disappointed but also relieved. We got our meals: mine a delicious NY Strip medium rare. I should have ordered it rare, as it was more toward medium than rare. It was delicious, the best. For dessert I chose the Creme Brulee. It was perfect. Chrisp glaze and creamy custard. When the bill came, we were not charged for her Pinot Noir. Yeah! I just wish I could remember what I did that got me a steak dinner at Ruth's Chris. At the Jones Maltsberger location, it's 4:30-6:30 p.m. There is a separate menu that includes a hamburger and a variety of appetizers, all for about half price. The happy hour menu also includes cocktails. We love the Ruth's Chris hamburger, but on our latest visit we branched out to seafood: seared tuna, shrimp voodoo, and crab beignets. We also shared a slice of cheesecake for dessert. Ruth's Chris is one of the best steakhouses in town, but at special occasion only prices. The happy hour is something we can enjoy nore often. The bar area has TVs with sports and intimate tables. I have been to almost all of the steakhouses in San Antonio and this is one of my least favorite for steaks. I usually get steer towards a filet..but I've had it a few times here before and there is no flavor and it's just not great. So this time I got a New York Strip...and it was good...pretty decent. But my friends rib-eye was overcooked, barely a steak all day and not good flavor. The sides were pretty good. The $30 lobster Mac n cheese was good...sweet potatoes were very dry and the other sides were decent. The drinks are very good I will say. Most were not super sweet which I enjoy...overall..this place is ok. And people love Ruth's Chris so sure..try it. The wine was amazing. I don't know what it was - Probably one of their house cab but it was smooth and sweet. I don't like steak in general so I don't know if you should trust my review.
