First the good. The staff are genuinely groovy and full of aloha, the rates were superb ($80 for a full 24 hours) and when we had to change our reservation they made no qualms and easily accommodated us. Now the bad, and it didn't take away too horribly from our experience. Our mopeds belched out lots of exhaust which made riding in tandem impossible, plus we got lots of cutting glances. My moped was less than perfect. Every time we hit the slightest bump, it would sputter and belch loudly and you can tell it was in a previous accident because the headlamp was held together with adhesive and zip ties. But no regrets and it was so much fun! In fact, each year when we come to the big island we're making it our tradition to rent one and zip around town. read more

Do not buy anything from this shop. I bought a brand new scooter with a warranty. Bolts were loose on the scooter and were falling off causing problems and when I took him to the shop eventually the owner told me to leave and never come back. He will not stand behind the written contract warranty that we have. He is so rude and disrespectful that you should stay absolutely away from this place. He will see me in court. Aloha.. Where do I begin? I could start by telling you about my experience trying to find a dealer who would rent me a motorcycle to practice on before taking the MSF Basic RiderCourse training class. You see, while I had a motorcycle permit that legally allowed me to drive a motorcycle in the daytime, I had never been on a motorcycle. Every dealer on the island that I contacted said that they would only rent bikes to fully licensed motorcycle drivers. Paul Chinchilla (owner) was the only dealer who was willing to rent me a motorcycle. He was sincerely interested in helping me to learn more about the ins and outs of biking. He spent 45 minutes with me on the bike in front of his shop, teaching the basics of starting, stopping and feathering the throttle/choke. He also walked me through loading/unloading the motorcycle onto my Tacoma pickup truck and how to properly tie the bike down. And, of course, he gave me a lot of safety tips - including staying off the public roads while I was learning. Or I could begin with their inventory. I've been at their shop several times now and it seems like it's constantly changing. They move a lot of inventory. If you're purchasing a new bike, that's good because stock is constantly coming in. If you're renting, that's even better because your rental bike will be relatively low mileage. Or I could begin with their staff. Paul (the owner) is an upstanding guy, who truly places customer satisfaction at the top of his list. Tim (the mechanic) is knowledgeable and hardworking, the quiet sort of guy who knows his job and does it well. Jay (the manager) is the easy to talk to guy who operates barefoot out of the front office. No flim-flam artists here. They are just good people. If you're looking for a solid reliable team to rent, purchase or service a scooter/motorcycle, I highly recommend that you begin your search here at Kona Scooters. UPDATE: Their return policy as written on my receipt: "Things happen, and Kona.Surf understands. All funds are refundable as long as formal notice is given 24 hour before scheduled delivery." I've rented from Kona Scooters for several years in a row. They guys they have working there are great! No complaints about the service guys (that's what the 1 star is for). Unfortunately, the owner doesn't seem to care about customer service or retaining return customers. I booked a scooter, last minute (6 days before rental) for a work assignment that popped up. Again, the guys were great. The unfortunate part is that I injured myself and was unable to make the trip. I called the morning after my injury, 3 days prior to my rental, and let them know that I needed to cancel my scooter rental. I understand how last minute the cancellation was, but so was my rental. The owner decided that he would only authorize HALF of my rental fee back to me. Please note, this is the week of Ironman, where all prices of everything in Kona are doubled! So, Kona Scooters... my business and anyone that asks me, will go elsewhere. There are other scooter rental places on the island. And unless you don't mind getting screwed out of half your money or you know that nothing in your life will pop up that will make you need to cancel you reservation, you know like an unforeseen injury... find another scooter rental place. It's an added bonus when the value exceeds my expectations. Kama'aina is legit in this spot and I got a decent ride for 60 bucks for 24 hrs. Should have known going in there was gonna be a waste of time when I called and the guy was RUDE AF ...Went in to find parts for a few different scooters, ended up talking with one of the guys who I'm assuming owned or had a part in owning it .. I asked about sourcing parts for a custom build with the intent on tryna support a local business.. instead of actually being helpful home boy was tryna convince me that instead of going through the avenues to make my build legit/street legal I'd be better off buying a complete bike from him and swapping everything over from that bike , motor, VIN PLATES everything.. pretty sure that's not a legit way to make a bike legal .. his reasoning was cost efficient.. he obviously didn't realize I know as much as I do.
