I placed an order at this deli shop but wasn't able to pick it up myself due to work, so I sent someone else a few hours later. Unfortunately, by the time they arrived, the shop had already closed. I never received a call or any notification letting me know they'd be closing or that the order wouldn't be held. When I called to ask about the situation, the person I spoke with told me it wasn't their fault that I had "forgotten" my order and questioned why they should have to pay for my sandwich. I've been eating at Kona's Deli since the 1990s, and it's still one of my favorite sandwich spots in San Luis Obispo. We used to love coming to Kona's when we would visit SLO. Their old location would often be our first meal stop during any visit. We hadn't been there during our last couple of visits so we made a point of dropping in when we were in the area last week. Sadly, this was not the Kona's we remembered. The staff is still upbeat and helpful and their making of the sandwiches is still spot on. It is the food itself that doesn't hit the mark for us anymore. We remember fresh, soft rolls, thinly sliced meats and cheese, and a variety of fresh veggies. The bread was good, but no longer great. The meat and cheese was good, but again, no longer great. Limited seating inside, but a lot of seating outside. Problem was, all the tables and chairs were covered with dust/dirt. When we shared our experience with a family member who lives in the area, she agreed that Kona's was no longer a "go to" spot for her either. I was introduced to Kona's by my bf because he raved about it a lot and after my first time I understood immediately. Their sandwiches are deliciously packed and on that Hawaiian bread?? Ooh yum!! Even with just half of the 6" I always find myself full, and I end up telling myself I can probably save the other half for dinner. Somehow, I always end up shoving the other half down my throat though because I just want to keep tasting the delicious flavors. My two favorites that I switch between are Junkyard Dog and Beach Break. The pesto cream cheese in the Junkyard Dog is just soooo good. I also love "the works" that you can add on to your sandwich. I recently had Kona's Deli as part of a work lunch. I had never even heard of it, so I was stoked to try something new. As I read the menu, I saw they had a sandwich called "Mom's PLT", with a note next to it saying it had been featured on the venerable Guy Fieri show "Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives". It even had a little drawing of Guy's bleached-blond, bespectacled head next to it. I thought "Now that's strange." You see, before living in SLO, I lived in Santa Barbara, and one of my favorite places to eat was Norton's Deli. My favorite menu item was a sandwich called "Mom's PLT". It was fucking delicious. They would take good pieces of pastrami and then press them into the griddle, creating this amazing crispyness to the pastrami. It almost became bacon-like, hence the "PLT" name. Inside the restaurant, they had multiple mentions of being featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. I once even watched the clip of their appearance on YouTube while eating the sandwich! Anyhow, when I saw this also on Kona's menu (same sandwich name and ingredients, same Triple D cred), I thought this was a wild coincidence. Maybe the same people owned both restaurants? Maybe two different versions of the SAME EXACT SANDWICH bowled over Guy Fieri within a 100 mile radius? So I ordered it. And it sucked. It was practically inedible. The meat was limp, fatty, and flabby. The bread and the rest of the fillings were fine. But this was not even in the same universe as the sandwich I had eaten over a dozen times at Norton's. I tried to find evidence of Kona's Deli ever appearing on Triple D, but it was to no avail. So I am demanding answers, Kona's Deli! Are you riding the coattails of a superior culinary menu item, and just hoped nobody would ever call you out on your bullshit, or is there something I'm missing here? With such great sandwich joints in SLO (High Street, Gus's) I just find no reason to return to this establishment. Came here for lunch on a Saturday and there were one or two tables with customers. I got their new sandwich "The Shore" which was on focaccia bread. I personally think focaccia is better served toasted or warm. I just recently discovered Konas through a friend who was in love with one of their sandwiches-- the destroyer. While being a Gus's girl and a sandwich lover, I decided to visit Konas with some friends and give their destroyer a try. We drove into the parking lot and made my way up to the store and the first thing i noticed was that the area was quaint and clean with picnic tables right outside. The atmosphere was perfect for the bright sunny day we were prepared to take advantage of. Upon entering the store, we noticed that it was significantly colder inside and it was a little too cold to sit at the tables inside without feeling a little chilly. The girls who worked on our sandwiches were very nice and helpful with a good sense of humor. We ordered our sandwiches and sat outside. I chose to try the destroyer and the layers of pepperoni, roast beef, turkey, cheese and the works did not disappoint. I couldn't give Konas five stars because while the sandwich was delicious, I wish they had more bread options such as the Dutch Crunch you can find at Gus's. The meat and veggies tasted fresh and the service was fabulous. Overall our experience here definitely impressed us and there is no doubt that we will be back for seconds or thirds in the future. read more
