Don't waste your time if you want to meet "adoptable" cats!!! The adoption agency (Anjellicle) they work with is beyond useless and will string you along while you fall in love with a cat and get your hopes up for two months, then just completely ghost you. Barbara at Koneko will also tell you she doesn't get involved with adoptions, then turn around and make up lies about you to Anjellicle. I even overheard her telling a friend she really likes the group of cats right now and doesn't want them to leave the cafe. Probably not coincidentally, not one single cat was adopted in the two months we spent visiting here. Literally the most unprofessional, rude, and just all around awful experience ever. Super Duper cute place. I have a slight allergy to cats but it didn't stop me from coming to this place. A friend made reservations for us to try this place. It's $20 admission but you can play with the cutest kittens on 3 floors. You can also bring your coffees with you inside. You do have to take off your shoes and use their slippers or wear your own socks though. I just think it's amazing that they combined a kitten adoption place with a coffee shop. On all 3 floors, they have couches for you to sit in, toys for the cats, and books that tells you each kitten's stories. Hope all these kitties will find a great home and a great owner. read more

I've always wanted to go to a cat cafe (though I would prefer a dog cafe). If you don't want to pay to touch the cats, or if you are mildly allergic but still love cats, you can still come here, have a drink and look at the cats play through the glass window. I found that very amusing. In so far as a cafe, it is good enough. Their "crack pie" was pretty good, but I've had more addicting desserts with less provocative names. The decor is cute, and the seating is good with plenty of table space for reading, if you want to wait for a cat lover to meet you there. More important, the cats look healthy and seem to be enjoying their lives in the cat cafe. read more

I didn't grow up a cat person but after a trip to Koneko I was almost convinced to switch sides. This is the only cat cafe to my knowledge located in the east village. They serve an assortment of drinks, dessert, and bowls. Their main draw however is the cat enclave located in the back of the cafe. To be able to visit these cats you have to make an appointment using the cafe's online portal. The reservations cost around $20 per person and these funds go to maintaining the space, food for the cats, etc. When we arrived for our reservation we were greeted by one of the volunteers and told basic rules about how to behave with the cats and other do's and don'ts. After that we were allowed to roam between the three different levels where the cats were, two indoor and one outdoor level. There were about 15 or so cats during the time we visited and this changes with the amount of cats adopted at any given time. The staff gave us space to explore the different areas and play with the cats we came in contact with for a full hour. Oddly enough this was very therapeutic experience. I didn't get to actually see the cats because I was just trying to find a place to read but the cashier told me I had to reserve in advance to see the cats anyways. He said it cost $20 dollars to see the cats which I thought was kind of overpriced but then again, what isn't overpriced in New York City? Came here for a cat "brunch" with a friend. We were given two food options, fruit bowl or waffles. We both chose the fruit bowl, which was honestly lacking in the amount of fruit. Upon entering the cat area you are instructed to remove your shoes. (They have slippers you can wear but I recommend bringing your own socks) They give you basic instructions on which cats can be pet, no picking up cats, etc. There was 19 cats for us to see- majority were kittens which was nice. They have tons of cat toys scattered through out the cat exhibit. We spent about an hour visiting the cats, any longer and we'd be bored. read more

There were so many cute cats! I heard that they're for adoption too, which is really nice of them to take care of these cats while advertise them through the cafe. It's $20 per person for one hour, which I thought was a bit on the pricer side since I am comparing that to the cat cafe I've been to in another country. The cat area was huge! There were 3 different levels, the top and bottom were indoors and the middle was outside. I think there were about 10 cats there. After our hour was over, we ordered some drinks and food. I tried the matcha latte and the okonomiyaki (which is a savory Japanese pancake). The matcha latte wasn't too sweet and was strong in matcha flavor. The okonomiyaki took a while to make and was bigger than I expected, so thank goodness we split it 4 ways. Even though it was covered in sauce, it wasn't that soggy and was delicious. Looking to adopt or just admire, nap, play with the kitties, Koneko is a worthwhile visit. I made a reservation quite easily online, for $15 per person for one hour. Bonus, it is okay to snack in the cat nap room while playing with the cats, if you choose to do so. Photos allowed, but no flash photography of course. I did not try the food or drink at Koneko, but specifically went to see the cats. A reservation for 2 ppl on a Sunday was easily arranged a few days before. The cats are immensely adorable, and any cat lover will have a great time. The cat nap rooms include two floors, each with a small room filled with some cat toys and napping beds and shelves for climbing. By 4PM, most of the cats were burned out and sleeping. I would suggest trying to go earlier in the day as the cats will be possibly more awake and active. Still, it was a nice time just lounging around with and petting the cats. They were super well behaved and tame for the most part and did not mind the constant flow of a stranger's company. The cats are really adorable, and we both had a great time just seeing the variety. They had about 15 cats for that evening. We really enjoyed our time at Koneko. Their cats are lovely, the cafe itself is cute. I would come back and try some of their coffee and/or small bites. Otherwise I would agree the main attraction are the cats. You can spend only $15 to spend time in the cat nap room for one hour, or take a peek when passing through. Great value for price. $15 to enter the separate cat enclosure which consists of one room on two floors. I'd suggest making a reservation but my group and I walked in and waited about 20 minutes for the next entry. The group you along with other visitors so that there aren't too many people at once. All the cats were super friendly and some lazy, some energetic. The staff was very soft spoken and generally pretty polite and helpful. They also serve some food but I settled for a cold brew coffee which hit the spot. Definitely going back again because of location, quality, service, and overall a great time! P.S. Wish there were more cats though, because sometimes the cats hide out in the tunnels they use to move around. :( It's pretty cool that they have an outdoor area, perfect for days when the weather is nice. There's also a cafe if you just want to eat inside and not play with the cats. The caters experience was mediocre, cats seem exhausted and non-interactive. The environment for the cats seem a little depressing. Iced oolong tea first came out tasting like plain water, had to ask them to make another one. Make sure you ask for a little syrup in matcha latte cause it tastes like medicine if you don't. I've been to Koneko twice since it's opening...and I absolutely love this place. I want to begin by saying that the staff here is EXCEPTIONAL. You can tell they love what they do, are passionate about the resident cats, their care, and finding them homes. Very knowledgeable and friendly group of people, which makes such a difference in the experience. Another wonderful thing about this place is how customized it is for the cats and human visitors. Cat decor is EVERYWHERE, including the bathroom, and the living area for the resident cats has everything (and more) that a cat could need. If you are considering adopting a cat, I encourage you to come check out the ones at Koneko. I had no idea this even existed here in New York City until my friend mentioned it. Koneko Cat Cafe is America's first Japanese Cat Café and Koneko means "kitten" in Japanese. Huh. The interior design of the cafe is so beautiful. Couldn't help but snap some photos. There were SO MANY adoptable cats roaming freely around three cat-centric spaces: The sunlit Upper Cattery, the warm and cozy Lower Cattery, and a first-of-its-kind outdoor Catio. Super clean environment. The lady walked us through many of the cats' names and personalities. I also saw her grabbing a lint roller to get rid of cat fur on the bean bags. The mission of Koneko is to find loving homes for the cats. I support this mission. Adopt, don't shop. I visited their website and learned that all the cats were pulled from the Animal Care & Control's "at-risk" list by their partner, Anjellicle Cats Rescue. Anyway, when you first arrive by the entrance of the sunlit upper cattery where the cats are, you take a pair of slippers off the shelf. (Do NOT grab it from the laundry hamper bag like we did...I realized that when we were on the way out...well duh the clean ones were on the shelf, how did we miss that?!) Once you get in the sunlit upper cattery, you are required to sanitize your hands before petting or playing with the cats. They will be everywhere. Most were asleep when we first arrived. ALSO, do NOT pick up cats. To be blatantly honest, I'm not much of a cat person. Most cats freak meowt. This was a cool experience, though. I really wanted to purr-suade everyone, including myself, that I, too could be a cat person. Well, sadly I got bit. Twice. By two different cats :( but at least that prompted me to do some research and learn a few facts about cats! Extremely impressed by this cat cafe! I have gone to Meow Parlour multiple times and surprised by how much more this cattery, Koneko, has to offer! Though, I noticed the prices are steeper here. $15 for 1 hour (per person) for a "cat nap"/play. First off, when you walk in, there's a Starbucks-like setting, where you can read books, bring your laptop, etc. while enjoying a cup of coffee or tea. They have table seating and also available space at the bar. The mini cafe also serves sake, beer, wine, and also a variety of snacks/appetizers! The food was beautifully created and tasted delicious; it compliments the Japanese setting and imitates the authentic cuisine very well (though there's no sushi or ramen available). We tried the Japanese pickled vegetables and the tofu dish. They were both very flavorful and tasty. We also had sake which was a nice touch. The staff are very clean, attentive and informative. After our snack, we checked-in at the iPad by the bar just in time for our reservation (made online prior to our arrival). We were brought to the back and took off our shoes and given white slippers. I hung my jacket and walked in to greet and play with the kitties! I was very impressed how clean it was and they have two levels (plus a "catio") that has about 12 cats roaming around, playing or taking a cat nap! There's absolutely no cat smell (or litter box smell) and I did not see any fur (since they constantly use lint remover to keep the furniture clean). The cats were very friendly and playful (those who were not taking a nap). There are plenty of toys plus very neat, modern furniture/decor, cat books and even a journal where you can write a message or draw a picture (guestbook for customers)! They even have creative events when you go on their website, where you can make a reservation for cool activities such as a cat movie screening, Japanese arts and crafts, sake tasting, Japanese tea tasting, "My Cat From Hell" screening and more! Very cute, clean, and cool place inside. Loved the concept of playing with cats at this cafe while having a drink or some takoyaki, Japanese appetizers. We didn't reserve to play with cats, but their drinks were very good, and their cake slices were even better! I had their housemade matcha crack pie, which was impressively authentically tasty. There's a good amount of seats indoors. The front door was open. It was nice to feel the slight breeze and rain outside. I found the workers to be slightly unapproachable. I reallly really wanted to like this place. As other reviewers have also mentioned the ratio of cats to humans is really really disappointing. We came o a Sunday night and there were basically 3 cats to interact with. The place costs $20 per person so after spending $65 on two glasss of wine and 1 entry each we were left alone with basically one cat upstairs and one cat downstairs. The cats were uninterested in human contact. I came here on a date and i was so upset after spending $65 and being embarrassed that I cut the rest of the night short. I can understand if some of the cats they are fostering are tired. It's totally fine if one cat is done for the day. But don't charge people $20 if you have only 3 cats total available to interact. I was really hoping for a traditional Japanese atmosphere, but Koneko didn't really deliver on that. I do think it's really cool that karaoke is an option if you ask, but I think $20/hr access to the back is a bit steep especially when combined with an $18 carafe (or rather half of a carafe, it was about 2 shots each? Maybe slightly more.) of sake. While I don't think anyone can control how sleepy or playful cats are, I don't think the heat was helping the matter. I was definitely sweating in both the inside and outside area and I don't typically sweat. My friend and I managed to get a few to play with us because we're so familiar with cats and have a few of our own, but I saw other people struggling to interact with them. I also think they should try to push to get these cats adopted a bit more. We definitely would have, if we could have. These are great little kitties and all quite adorable (as seen in my pics). This is a great way to find them homes, so I really do want it to be successful. With AC, maybe treats (cats need incentives), and the staff helping people learn more about each cat and/or showing them how to get positive interactions from cats, I think this place could go a lot farther to help itself and the cats of New York. This past week, I visited Koneko with my 22 month old son, a close friend and her 21 month old daughter. I would not recommend this cat cafe based off this experience. I have been to numerous cat cafes around the world (Korea, Vietnam, Japan, etc) and I have never had such an unsettling and uncomfortable time then I did at Koneko. They charge $15pp even kids under 2 for an hour of play. However, we were informed by the employees not to pet one of the cats because he "play bites" and scratches. I had stated that we have a terrier who also "play bites". The employee replied saying the cat "really bites" like breaking skin and can be dangerous. This was unsettling and confusing. I do not understand why a cat like that is in a establishment that allow children. Besides this interaction, the overall experience was super unfriendly and our kids felt very unwelcome. Experience wasn't as advertised. The employees were rude and contentious. Despite paying admission, our children were not allowed to have the full experience because we were constantly curtailed any interaction with the felines. To the owners, if you don't or are scared you of children to play with your cats then do not market your cafe as a kid friendly establishment. read more

I am not a super big cat person, but I still couldn't resist being drawn to this cosy looking cafe (their store logo looks like a Japanese emoticon ^O^) - plus having little furry cats to pet! The cafe is set up so there is a separate cafe area out front with tables, so if you just want to drop in for a drink you totally could (they have alcoholic drinks too!). In the back is the cattery - reservations could be made beforehand but we did walk in, and thankfully it wasn't crowded so we were allowed to go in immediately (it's $15 to go into the cattery). We were told to catch the cats at their more milder, sleepy state, evening time (around 8) would be a good time to have a more intimate experience; otherwise, in the early afternoon the cats are more lively, which is definitely good to know! You could also order a drink up front and someone will deliver it to you inside the cattery. I think what makes this cat cafe is the space - it's so well thought out and so cosy (for cats AND humans!) it's split into two levels, where cats can go down through a slope hidden under a bench, and with beanbag chairs scattered throughout. It's so peaceful just hanging around the cats and petting them (although cats keep running away from me....) One of the staff also was incredibly friendly and made the experience - he would introduce each of the cats' names and personas, and you could really see their characters play out! It's a cat cafe. The cats are inside instead of being out on the streets, they are getting fed, brushed, played with and pampered by everyone that visits this place. Can it get any better than that? There are cat cafes are all around the world and it's on my bucket list to visit each and every one of them. I am in New York visiting my sister for a few days only, so I only have time to visit one cat cafe in New York instead of all of them, and I know there are a few. So, trying to be efficient, I went online and googled "best cat cafe in New York" and there you have it, Koneko popped up. It was voted the best cat cafe in 2018 and after visiting it last night, I completely agree. I made a reservation online. They offer three types of activities/reservations. You have your standard visit, which is one hour with the cats for 20$/person. They also have something called "Kitty Brunch", which is only offered on Thursdays and Fridays, and then one more service that's only offered on Wednesday's. We opted for a standard visit and I can honestly say that the price point is perfect. The cat cafes in LA are 25$/person, so it's within a good price range. Believe me this is going towards a good cause. Either way, my sister and I had a reservation for 7PM. It is recommended that you come in 5-10 minutes before the start of your reservation so you have time to check in and order a few drinks before you go into the cat room. After you check in, you are directed towards the back room. Shoes go off, coats and purses are hanged and then the door to heaven opens up. There are basically two cat rooms, one upstairs and one downstairs. Enjoy yourselves around the kittens, listen to the instructor, DO NOT PICK UP THE CATS, let them come to you, and just have a darn good time. We had a chance to meet a few of the kitties, some of them were hiding and that's normal. There is no need to take any stars off for this place because you didn't get a chance to play with one of the cats or only saw a few. These cats are all rescued, and that's all that should matter. Everything here was so nice - the cats, the food, and the people, except for this one girl who yelled at us and is rude to everyone for no reason. We went out to use the bathroom and get food. When we came back in, she told us no and that we didn't have courtesy and gave us a lecture with a raised tone. She wasn't nice to other customers as well and had an attitude. Koneko is a cat cafe. The front part is a typical cafe serving some snacks and drinks. (The wines were quite tasty, but we didn't eat there.) The special part is in back and downstairs. You can bring your drinks back to commune with the cats. They're all adoptable, and most were pulled from the NYC Shelter's "at risk" list by Anjellicle Cats Rescue. The people at Koneko were very friendly and happy to give advice on the felines. It's a great idea to help boost adoptions, and we found it quite fun to enjoy a wine and pet a few cats. This was my second time visiting a cat cafe in the city and boy was I impressed! They just opened up roughly a week ago but if they didn't tell me this, I wouldn't think they were new all! The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. In particular, the two female workers that were with the cats were very approachable and you can tell that they care a lot for the cats! The area for the cats is actually two floors. As you head downstairs, you come across this large mural full of...well cats! At first, the cats were just running around or napping but eventually, they wanted some attention. If there's a cat that you fell for, you can also fill up an adoption application. So I'm going to be honest, I came here for the cats, and yes, they are amazing. So fluffy, cool places to hang out, toys if they are active, cool bean bag chairs if they aren't. Okay. I got some food because I needed to charge my phone but then my mind was blown. Not onky was the okonomiyaka...umm the actual , but the edamame was just the way I like it. You might think that's easy, it's not. But the real winner, the manager, or lead, Ben. He was not only kind to everyone who walked through the door, knowing some people by name, he was exquisitely kind to his workers. Cats! So many cats! Ever since I learned about the existence of cat cafes in Japan, I've wanted to go to one. Now it's finally possible in NYC! I made the reservation online for the earliest timeslot on Caturday with two other friends (11AM Saturday). Other than the cat lounge area in the back that has two floors, there's also a nice café in the front for coffee/tea/pastries. Both areas were very clean. Including my two friends, there were about 10 other people in the same time slot, so it was a little crowded until they told us that the downstairs area was also open. There's a ramp and a few ledges between the two floors that allow the 12 or so cats to freely move from room to room, super cool. I thought the cats would be swarming me in cuddles until I died, but that was not the case... unfortunately. Cats are cats and they just do whatever they want, some of them were more affectionate/playful than others so your experience may vary. I was able to pet a few of them and play with a bunch of others by using the cat toys. The toy I found to be the most effective was the stick with a sparkly pom-pom thing on its tip: they love swatting at it if you move it around quickly, in and out of their vision. I imagine it to be less crowded during the weekdays. But for $15 an hour, it's a great place to hang out with some cats and just de-stress. read more

Amazing place. My toddler daughter enjoyed a lot and I really like places that support rescue. We reached the place 30 min before 2 pm and everyone working there kept on reminding us that the place was all booked from 2 pm and we need to leave at 2. Ok get it, but you don't have to remind us every 5 min. The constant reminding for almost everything- not to touch the cats, to leave the place on time, not to stand in front of the restroom annoyed me a bit (we didn't touch the cats and left the place 5 min early). They say "seeing is believing", but for my wife and I, it was the experience that truly stole our hearts. Now, if you ever want to adopt a cat (or really have a cat adopt you), or if you just want to spend a super fun hour or three doing something that I can almost guarantee you've never done before, then I highly recommend you visit this corner of heaven called Koneko and spend some time with the sweetest cats and kittens from the Anjellicle Cats Rescue. This marriage between café and cat may seem strange at first, yet somehow it works so perfectly well together, literally as if it was always meant to be. So, trying to review Koneko and Anjellicle separately is simply not an option. If you are not already Googling your way there, then please keep reading and let me Jedi mind trick you into going. There are two simple ways to be a part of it all. And you don't have to be a cat-lover to have fun there (but trust me, if you're not, you will be by the time you leave). Stop-on-by to Koneko, get a welcoming cup of matcha latte (or a sake) with someone you love. Share a bite to eat, from a showcase of pastries to a menu of Japanese street food. All while falling in love with the cutest sight of cats at play from Anjellicle. Think of it as "dinner and a movie", except the fair is full of finger foods and the movie the best one you've seen in a long time that's well worth watching over-and-over. However, for $20 an hour per "hooman", you can do more than just be a spectator of frolicking kittens, while you wipe your milk-foam moustache off of your upper lip. Instead, you can be fully immersed with happy cats all around you, as they make your world a better place to be, where you will have wished you cleared the rest of your day, just so you could stay with them forever. When entering the "cattery", you are greeted to three floors filled with twenty cats, just wanting-and-waiting to show you some love. The main room, which faces the café, is where the cats get to watch us "hoomans" drinking and eating in our natural habitat. The second room is an outdoor lounge adorned with a feline-filled mural that is sure to make you smile and the cats purr. The third room is a quiet den where the cats can come to you for some private cuddle time and a quick catnap together. All, with a super friendly staff, there to help with any questions or needs you and the cats may have. While $20 an hour per "hooman" may seem like a lot, the proceeds go to the care of the cats, which makes every penny worth it. Every cat and kitten gets to roam free, unlike being caged in a shelter, so their true personalities shine for you to adore in all of its glory. And did I mention that all of these precious felines are adoptable? My wife and I had absolutely no plans to adopt an Anjellicle cat, while visiting Koneko. But after two visits, here we are with two of the most loving cats ever, who actually adopted us, before we could even begin filling-out the adoption papers for them. Adopting through Anjellicle is as easy and enjoyable, as the warm experience from Koneko. If you find a cat you fall in love with at Koneko, and provided the cat loves you back, you just simply fill-out a quick form, gather a few friends to speak on your behalf as pet-parents... and the rest becomes a happy history. At each step, the friendly Anjellicle staff keeps you well informed throughout the adoption process. Quick responses and all of the information you could ever need is never further than a simple email or phone call away. Anjellicle does its very best to match every cat to the right home, so everyone can become a perfect new family together. And if adopting a cat was your primary reason for going to Koneko, but you can't find the right cat to be your soulmate, fear not, as Anjellicle works with other catteries across Manhattan for you to find the cat or kitten of your dreams. Please keep in mind that Anjellicle is a non-profit organization, where the staff graciously volunteer their time for everyone else's benefit. The cats and kittens are all safely pulled from harmful environments, or from death-row, where they are thankfully given a second chance to find their "purrfect" forever home. They are all thoughtfully cared for and their medical records are up-to-date. And with a small adoption fee, they come spayed/neutered and microchipped for theirs and your benefit. My wife and I simply adored this happy, yet delightfully unexpected, experience of café and cat. Where we believe this union between the two is genius beyond belief. And while some of you may have visited cat cafés before, in places like Japan, the mission of Koneko and Anjellicle connecting cats and kittens to their "fur-ever" homes is what makes all of the difference.
