Absolutely the best cupcakes you'll find. These days cupcake speciality shops are all the rage. That means you needn't look far to find an overpriced, "gourmet" cupcake. I've had Crumbs in NYC and Sprinkles in Orange County (among many others), trust me... neither can hold a candle to Kookenbacker. Kookenbacker offers rich and moist, unique cupcakes that are a steal at under $3. This bakery is the best! I ordered 4 dozen cupcakes for my daughter's 40th birthday party, and they were a big hit with all of our guests. The PB/chocolate ganache and the lemon blueberry are my favorites! This is a by-order-only bakery, but the owner is easy to work with if you give him enough time ahead of your event. So I rarely write reviews, which I should because I'm a bit of a foodie, but I just felt a strong urge to share my experience in hopes that I may help someone make a decision that's right for them. And I hope the baker reviews this rating, too. The GOOD: 1.) The baker was very nice. 2.) The cupcakes looked nice. 3.) The prices were great. 4.) The flavors were captured accurately (i.e. lemon taste like lemon). The NOT-SO-PLEASANT 1.) The baker was wearing a dirty apron. And I'm not talking dirty with cake batter! I mean it looked like he had been working under the hood of a car. He looked hot and sweaty, and although it was a pretty warm day, perhaps even more of a reason to wash oneself up before serving customers. 2.) The cupcakes were in the back "somewhere". When I reluctantly placed my order (not wanting to offend him by my previous judgment---something I need to totally get over, but moving along), he went to the back to get them. I can't tell you where they were or why they were hiding. But they were. Only good thing is they were refrigerated, so at least I know they weren't hot and sweaty like the baker. 3.) The box the baker put my cupcakes in...well...it came from this closet room thing, on a shelf that looked like it was holding all kind of random scrap booking materials and other "mail" type items. When he went in there, I was confused what he was doing, hoping the cupcakes wouldn't arise from the dust. Luckily they didn't. Just the box he put them in... 4.) I think the baker licked his finger when he was explaining the flavors to me and gesturing a sample (very sweet but no thanks). And his hands seem dirty after all the clamoring he was doing in the closet. 5.) And I still ate the damn cupcakes! Ugh, of course I was making myself feel sick afterward thinking I had a tummy ache (I didn't, just had that feeling you get, like, when you see a bug and you start to itch? Yea that.). 6.) So despite the accuracy of flavor (I had two kinds), they both tasted like there was a tad too much salt in the recipe. I feel that unless I've ordered "salted caramel" or "salted pretzel" or some other salty flavor, I shouldn't taste the salt. But hey, these are all my opinions, right? Overall, I feel no need to ever return to this establishment again. I do wish the baker much success, and I hope that he sees this review as an opportunity to make a few changes that might help him attract (and keep) more customers, because he's such a nice guy and clearly can make decent cupcakes. read more

I had a great experience working with Greg, proprietor at Kookenbacker. He gave me a very good price on a custom cake that was the centerpiece of our event. We all found the strawberries & cream cake to be exceptionally good. The decoration was attractive and effective. I had approached another well-known cakemaker in the neighborhood and they offered me a smaller cake for a lot more money. I should preface this review by saying I never actually met the owner, Greg. However, we had a few phone conversations. My husbands friend recommended his wife who is a florist. She had told me her husband was a baker. I thought, what a nice team! I would possibly use both services for our wedding. The first time I spoke to him (on a Saturday), he mentioned he has a website & to pick out a few flavor combos for the tasting and email him ( with a link on his website). That afternoon, we checked out all his yummy treats & emailed him. A week later, he still hadn't responded so I called him. His answer when I told him I emailed him, ' oh yea, that has happened before, sometimes I don't get the email'. UMMMMMM, if this has happened before as a business owner, why not get it fixed!!!!!! Anyways, he apologized & provided me with his personal email. Again, a week later, when I didn't hear from him... I called & he said ' I'm sorry, who is this? Have we ever spoke before?! I explained his website email situation ( he still sounded as if that didn't ring a bell). Told him we would really like to set up a tasting soon, despite my multiple attempts to reach out to him.... He still sounded confused to my reasons of contacting him. Then all of a sudden, mid convo, he said ' I DO NOT LIKE YOUR ATTITUDE. I CANNOT WORK WITH YOU. GOOD LUCK ON YOUR WEDDING'. I highly recommend checking out Kookenbacker in Drexel Hill. Even though the shop is very small and on a highly traveled road with limited parking, the quality of the baking and ingredients is high, the baker is excellent, and his baked goods are scrumptious. I ordered a baptism cake for my son, and for $25 we got a nice-sized round three-layer cake with delicious frosting and delicate decorations. My only reason for giving Kookenbacker 4 stars instead of 5 is that I was hoping to bring home some cupcakes as well, but they only had pies in the to-go display case. Granted, I came in late afternoon on a Saturday, so the cupcakes were probably sold in the morning. But I think a little more variety in the to-go case would keep patrons coming back for more. Thanks again for a great cake. Better than anything you would find in local grocery store bakeries, and competitively priced to support mom and pop. read more

My husband ordered a chocolate layer cake for my birthday. First of all, I'm a huge chocolate fan, and have eaten many different chocolate cakes. This one is the best I've ever had. The cake was moist, deep with flavor. The buttercream filling was light, fluffy and chocolately. The ganache coating was rich and not too thick. The decorations were simple and tasteful; just right. Greg made a beautiful cake for my son's first birthday. The cake is obviously the centerpiece of the birthday and I was really hoping for a good outcome. He took the time to discuss the different options with me, and I never felt rushed or pressured at all! I had just a basic idea of what I wanted, and we were able to come up with an idea together. It looked exactly the way I had imagined, and the taste was outstanding! You can tell everything is made from scratch. He was very professional and easy to work with.
