They serve homestyle Malaysian food here! It's a no-frills establishment with quick service and sticky menus. Our table of six ordered Hainese chicken, stir fried Chinese watercress, stir fried noodles (not sure which ones these were), this taro nest with chicken and cashew dish, and roti canai. Overall everything was pretty solid. No complaints with the Hainese chicken, but it could have been a bit saltier. The sauce with it was pretty decent, but I enjoy the chicken itself being seasoned. I'm not sure which exact noodles we got, but they were decent as well. They were stir fried with beef and had a soy sauce flavor. The taro nest dish was also good with the fried taro being a good balance to the chicken stir fry dish inside. Roti canai was standard, but I wish it was warmer. I got the Hainan chicken laksa mee and the amount of chicken was pretty decent. The cuts of chicken at this place have always been moist and I have never had complaints about that. The noodle portion was also very generous. It almost felt like they gave me a refill, but it was all there from the start. If you dug in with chopsticks, you would hit noodles all the way to the bottom. This time the food came out super fast and the noodles seemed clumped together, which made it clear they were pre-cooked and sitting out. I honestly would not have minded waiting a little longer if they cooked them to order, especially since I came on a Sunday afternoon and there was only one other table. It should not have been hard to make fresh noodles, so that part was disappointing. The toppings were also just the chicken. Yummy but smaller portion sizes and expensive. Kookoo still have the same protocol as during covid. They bring a small basin of hot water to dip the dishes/tea cup and chopsticks infront of you to show cleanliness/sanitizing. Then using tongs, they pick them up and place it on the table to airdry while you peruse the menu. I do wish they do a better job of cleaning around the table/seating area as the seats weren't as clean (pervious guests were messy) and flooring can be sticky/wet from spills. They didn't have tofu satay or the roti tissue (they rarely make the tissue as it's more time consuming when they are too busy with service). Other than that, our meal was fine. Have been wanting to try out this restaurant for years now and finally got to today! We arrived for lunch a little before 12 and had to wait a bit to be seated since it's a small restaurant and there were already quite a few people eating inside. Tables are partitioned into booths, invoking horrible flashbacks of pandemic days yet offering more privacy for parties because you won't be bumping elbows with the diners at the table next to yours. The server wasn't particularly friendly but was very efficient. This was the first time I've seen dishes, cups and utensils being cleaned with boiling water at your table before they're given to you. Also loved that they give you a huge stack of napkins instead of just one per person. Perfect for OCD folks like us!!! Roti canai- Enjoyed the flaky roti and flavorful curry. Note that like at other Malaysian restaurants, the roti to curry ratio is a bit off...tons of bread but very little curry. Satay beef- Beef was tender, crispy and flavorful. Satay sauce was good but a bit on the sweet side. Hainanese chicken- Chicken was moist and juicy. Came drenched in soy sauce with the spicy chili sauce on the side. No ginger and scallion sauce. Tip: order the Hainanese chicken and a side of chicken oil rice separately instead of the Hainanese chicken with rice to get the best bang for your buck. Indian mee goreng- Delicious peanut sauce and not too spicy. Loved that it comes with tofu that absorbed all the flavorful sauce. Overall, this place didn't disappoint. The curry sauce dip had some chicken and potatoes. - Hainanese Chicken with Rice (海南難肶飯): $10.75 ($11.70 with tax). I didn't appreciate the bony cut of dark chicken, though others might. The dipping sauce seemed store-bought instead of house-made. - Papaya Mango Shrimp Salad (木瓜芒果虾沙拉): $11.95 ($13.01 with tax). A large serving of shredded papaya and mango; light, refreshing, and filling. The shrimp were mostly, but not completely deveined. Kookoo chicken was a welcome addition to the neighborhood, considering little Nyona at 86 st was the only Malaysian eatery in the area for a long time. Kookoo had rave reviews since its induction, and I must admit, their food is pretty good. The only negative is its space. It's relatively small and can only accommodate 6-8 parties at once. They only have one big round table in the back corner, so it's not the best place to have large gatherings. Since Covid, they added partition inside that enclosed each table in its own "room". This means there's less flexibility with the setup of the tables, and the wait times are longer. I highly recommend their roti canai and sarang burung. I don't recommend the Penang loh bak and the laksa noodles. But otherwise, everything else is nicely executed. My family really likes their fish head rice noodles. They have partitioning between each table, so less could fit. It seemed like there was only one man doing the server work but later on saw two women who just stood around on the side. Their chicken is fresh and flavorful, but the meat could be more tender and skin can be more jelly. I don't get why Hainanese chickens here don't remove bones, but I don't like how they smash the bones and bone bits get all other the meat and in between my teeth. The rice might be the best chicken oil rice I've had in a while. It's flavorful with umami without making your mouth dry with strong aftertastes. They give a big portion of rice for all rice dishes. The soy sauce they use for the chicken isn't particularly thick and dark but tasted sweet like the type you add on cheung fun. They don't have ginger scallion paste here. Their chili sauce is not spicy at all, on the thinner side, bright and sweet. I paid extra to specify getting dark meat. The curry laksa Hainanese chicken had the same chicken as mine but without all the condiments. The rice noodle they give is the nicer type that's slipperier and smoother. The crispy anchovies, cucumbers, and peanuts added a crunchy texture to the staple. In addition, it helped balance the savoriness of the curry and chicken with acidity, saltiness, and a little sourness to the dish. The sweet and sour pork was more on the sweeter side from the pineapple, so if you don't mind you could try it. The Hainanese chicken tasted quite well as well, the freshness and moistness stood out. They do include a dipping sauce for it if you want more flavor with it since it doesn't usually pack much flavor in this dish. I have also dined here before just casually getting fried rice and some other stuff, it can be busy at times but the service and atmosphere are decent. Nnonya did not make perfect rendang, but merely sparked a thirst for the quest. We tried every malaysian restaurant we could find in Brooklyn, and became regulars at Ipoh. settling for their beef curry over rice and black pepper beef. After about 10 gristle filled meals, we grudgingly moved on. But now, there were more new Malaysian places to try. This is what lead us here. The rendang was bland and had a moderate amount of gristle without the right percentage of meat bites. It needed to have different cuts and longer cooking time. The black pepper beef was confusing to my palate. Red. green. yellow bell peppers and jalapeños makes a. exican Fajita taste. The spices seemed Mexican too. I ate it, but my dining partner found it simply too weird to eat. Like if you wanted stir-fry but only had ingredients from Taco Bell. I cannot vouch for their chicken unless they make a gluten free version someday. But at the end of this disappointing meal, we were still hungry. read more

Kookoo chicken is one of those small family owned restaurant that churns out good food without all the fanfare. I rarely come to Brooklyn but if I lived nearby I would get take out from here all the time. The food is good and prepared well and also flavorful. The salt pepper squid was seasoned just right not chewy and fried in a light coating the only thing missing was a sauce. We got the satay yin yang combo with beef and chicken and I loved the skewers of juicy meat with the nutty sauce. The hainanese chicken had such glistening skin and was soft and poached perfectly it only came with a sambal sauce though. I regret not getting the yellow oil rice but I did like the coconut rice. The noodle dish the penang chow kueh teow was a mouthful to pronounce but a mouthful of yummy flavors- the thin noodles studded with peppers and pork and seafood. The fried chicken wings we ordered were cut in half which made it easier to eat but it was also so perfectly crisp with an audible crunch when biting into it. The ong choy with belacan sauce was a good accompaniment with our meal and they were generous with the shrimp paste which I like. I also like their roti canai which was airy and soft and tasty with the chicken curry sauce. They had a weird way of presenting the serving utensils, cups and plates from steaming hot water in a kiddie basin. I have witnessed a similar ritual before at dimsum parlors in hong kong but not necessarily presented in a plastic kiddie basin. The restaurant put up partitions to separate each table so it felt like you had a semiprivate room and they had a temperature check at the door and there was hand sanitizer at each table though it smelled faintly of cherry cough syrup. Kookoo's version consists of coconut pandan rice, half of a (very) well done boiled egg, tender curry chicken, fried anchovy, eggplant and sweet onion, soft cucumber and carrot batons, cabbage, and roasted whole peanuts. My favorite bites consisted of rice and anchovy alternating with bites of rice and tender chicken, the anchovy leaving me wanting more. I could probably do without the hard boiled egg as it had the less aesthetic greenish-tinged sulfuric ring around the yolk. I'm more of a medium egg gal by personal preference. Other than that, all of the components together taste amazing however some fresher vegetables could have been used. Came here after taking the bus from Bay Parkway. When I entered, there was no customer insider. There was a server plucking greens. Ordered the lobak. The order took some time to make. While waiting, another customer came in to pick up an order while another customer ordered by phone. I heard a radio playing cantopop while each table had a wall for social distancing. Since this is one of the only Malaysian spots left in this area of Brooklyn, it will suffice. The service is not great. I understand that everyone is understaffed but the waiter would take away 1 or 2 plates and not come back until we waved him down again. We were trying to clear the table to have cake and get all the dishes off the table, not good service at all. The restaurant is on the smaller side and with the covid compartment / plastic rooms inside, it's even more cramped.
