I'm not rich, but I like to have a few really nice things. I've checked out the Korin website a few times but a recent visit to NYC gave me the opportunity to see first hand. Right around the corner from the A & C subway stop. Amazing knife selection and display in a wide price range - lovely ceramics and tableware too. The salesman had the patience of a saint (working with a novice like me) and steered me toward western models better suited to my big ham-hands. I left with a beautiful carbon steel petty knife that's still sharp as a razor after a month of almost daily use, and a special 'soft' cutting board. Great quality souvenirs of my NYC visit - can't wait to go back! read more

THE place in the U.S. to shop for serious Japanese cutlery. Looking for a first-rate Japanese knife from the likes of Masamoto, Misono, Suisin, or Aritsugu? Then you must make a pilgrimage here. Sure, they do online orders but in choosing a quality knife it's better to actually handle them and find what feels best for you. So head in being careful walking past their selection of tableware. Inside museum cases you'll find Western style knives on one side and traditional Japanese on the other. It can get surprisingly busy here.Youngish but knowledgeable staff very helpful and not at all pushy. A couple times I have gone looking at knives in a particular price range. When shopping I like to check out other options at higher price points to see if any differences are worth the extra bucks. No high pressure sales here, as I was never encouraged or nudged towards the more expensive items. They gave info, offered their advice and let me decide. You are treated with respect whether you're dropping $100 or $2000 on a knife. Each time, I ended up spending twice as much as originally intended and am happy with my choices. They also have kitchen/dining ware, sushi making items, soft rubberized cutting boards from Japan, and of course whetstones. Nice value-added service is the free initial sharpening for Western style knife purchases. Longtime Knife Master Sugai-san has taken an apprentice so now there should always be someone on hand for sharpening. Cool to watch and learn as they go through the process. The first time I heard about Korin was 14 years ago, when I started my first kitchen job. There was a knife sharpening demo at the restaurant along with a a sales person selling knives. All the cooks and I thought it was amazing. I went to the store and looked over the knives, the sales person was very nice and would explain which knife was used for what job and what kind of steel each blade was made of. I love knives. I *really* love knives. I love the selection at Korin, too. I'm purely a hobby-cook, but I'm sure I've spent a nice chunk of money at this place on 7 or 8 knives for myself and as gifts. I also have some high-end, custom-made hunting knives from makers like Bob Dozier. They're not cheap and take about a year and a half to get. About two months ago I figured I'd bring a batch of about 6 knives in to Korin for the "master" to sharpen. It's not cheap. I think they charged $15 for the western style knives and $25 for the traditional Japanese knives. I carefully asked whether or not they'd be comfortable working on one of my Bob Dozier knives and gave an example of one that I had just gotten from Bob (razor sharp!) to the master to view as a reference. About 2 weeks later I came back (no call, as promised, but I work just a block away so I just dropped in) and the western style knives were ready. Sadly, they weren't sharp. At least, not as sharp as I had expected. They weren't noticeably sharper than they had been when I dropped them off. My rare and valuable Dozier had a sticker on the Micarta handle. You don't put stickers on Micarta. I stayed in the store for 15 minutes futilely trying to get a damn glue stain out of the handle of my $600 Dozier knife and all I got was a "sorry" before they walked away and ignored me. Thanks for lessening the value of my collectible knife (you sell some of those too) and charging me $15. About a month later I dropped by again (still no phone call) because they never returned my Yanagi. I knew it took longer for this $25 sharpening job and it's not a knife I use often so I was okay with the wait. It was ready and it was SHARP. No "sorry" this time for the sluggishness. I also reiterated my disappointment in the $75 sharpening job for the other knives. Their only response was: "Yeah, sometimes they don't get so sharp. It depends on his mood." So in summary, don't expect great service. As for sharpening, they do the right stuff on the traditional Japanese blades but don't seem to care much about the western ones. Maybe next time I'll find another place to bring my business. You know, depending on my mood. read more

Service: - Staff is very knowledgeable and helpful, not pushy at all - Complimentary first time knife sharpening - they do the knife sharpening right on the floor letting you see how it is done and talk with the knife sharpener Product: - Fantastic selection of Japanese knives - Some other items as well (indestructible wine glasses, serving items, tea pots, etc) Other: - If you buy a knife from here they offer a free knife sharpening class on Sundays at 2PM (note you have to call in to sign up). In my session I was one of 2 people so it was a pretty good opportunity to learn. Brought my knives for their annual sharpening. Some mid-range some low-range. All came back scary-sharp. $15 a knife may sound steep but the value is a great bargain, considering how badly you could cut yourself on a skittering dull knife. Re: sharpening services, Jake E. had a really great point that I can mirror re: treatment of Japanese vs western knives. I've purchased a Suisen sujihiki from them which I am absolutely impressed by, but have abandoned their sharpening services for my western knives. Without care, ground a bit off of the bolster/heel of my Wusthof 8" heavy. Yes, Japanese bolsters don't extend down to blade edge, but the damage seemed unnecessary. There is a ceremony and prominence given to the sharpening station, so the contrast is disappointing. I'm used to using a Norton oil tri-stone in kitchens, then went way up to Chosera waterstones. I'll take care of my western knives myself. However, for the selection of Japanese knives, this place cannot be beat and I'd gladly return for that. read more

I was really interested in visiting this store. With such great reviews I assumed I would have no problem getting my razor sharpened. To my dismay the establishment is not wheelchair accessible. I called and spoke with someone asking if they had a ramp or another entrance. I had traveled all the way from south Brooklyn. She replied that they did not but placed me on hold. Two employees came to the door and looked out the window, looked directly at me and then walked away. I would also like to add that this place could easily have a portable ramp as the door was more than wide enough and only 2 steps high. We had a wonderful experience at Korin looking at knives to put on our wedding registry. We worked with Jack to learn what knives we needed based on our typical meals/cooking habits and then tried out a bunch of different styles and brands. I never felt rushed and Jack was more knowledgable than any other person we spoke to at (ahem...) other knife stores. ****************Update Review... Original Review Found Below******** So after writing my first review about Korin, many of my cooks asked me where they could get a pimp knife like mine. I told them about Korin, and they asked if I would place an order for all of them. I ordered several of the same knife I had recently purchased for myself and the bill climbs into the 2k realm. When it comes, the instructional video on sharpening I ordered for the cooks did not play completely. The fish bone tweezers I ordered were not in the package. But most egregious was the handles were all jacked up. Playing devil's advocate, the knives were on clearance, but there was no notice on the website to the effect of "Buyer beware, these handles are all f*'d up". So I call the friendly service people to figure out how they can correct the problem. The lady tells me no problem, we can send you a new video right away. Then she tells me that she is sitting with the guy who packed my box (2 weeks before) and he says he remembers putting the tweezers in. Are you serious? I told her that I am not so hard up as to lie about something like this to try and get a $9 pair of tweezers. She finally acquiesces. Then she says that because the knives were clearance, the handles can not be corrected, and our only option is to return the knives for store credit. Thank you very little! Store credit for busted knives. So some of my staff have kept their knives, which they are much less excited about now. Others returned them, and have used the credit as part of a larger payment for a new knife. The problem is, I have now spent over $4k at this place in less then three months and this is how they treat my business. I still love the selection of knives, but I am not biting at the bit to buy more from them in the future. I will, but not without shopping around more first. I really had no business going into Korin. So many knives for so many specialized uses. My ignorance, blunted only slightly by the knife skills course I took almost 10 years ago, was politely tolerated by the staff. I felt a need to purchase a chef's knife, so the salesman pointed me to a "Western-style" knife made in Japan. It's much lighter than the German knives I'm used to, but I'm sure it will slice a finger off if I'm not careful. If you have the appreciation of fine cutlery and the wallet to actually make a purchase, Korin is the place to go. read more

This is actually my second time coming back here, yes the store is small but its amazing how many different knives there are. The prices are reasonable for the quality you get. I been thinking and wanted a new chef knife for a long time now and I was going order it thru the website when I was in culinary school but realize that I am moving to NYC in a couple of month so i waited to go to this store in person instead. The store itself was nice but when you walk in the back, u can see all of the Japanese knife they have so I tested all of the knife they have and see how light it was for my hand. There were 3 that I liked the most(Misono UX-10, Masamoto, Suisin) The Misono was out of stock until the end of the month but it cost like $220 and I wanted this the most but realize that I can't really afford that plus it is so easy to be stoled in a busy kitchen so i decided to pass on it for now. I also like the masamoto but it cost $189 and pass on this one too. I choose to get the Suisin knife that only cost $110. Maybe When I am better and farer in my career then I will get the other 2 knife but this is a nice start to my collection. I really like this store and wish i had more money to buy more stuff here. read more

A really awesome place. I came like almost everybody else by a restaurant coworkers recommendation. I decided to check it out tight after work. When I first entered the place I was a bit uncomfortable because to be blunt, the place was really nice but once I went to the back with the knives all displayed, the sales man made me feel welcomed and showed me what I needed within my budget. I thought it was going to be like a William Sonoma where you get that vibe they already assumed you have know money when you walked through their door. At least in manhattan. The sakes man showed me an array of multi purpose blades and seemed knowledgable about the different blade qualities. I didn't feel pressured into buying any particular knife. In the end, I'm happy with the purchase I made which was a Togiharu Pro. read more

So this is my kitchen mail order series of reviews...so this review is not about the physical store, but only the mail order part. Well not living in New York or the East Coast, I have never been to this store, but I did get wind of the awesome selection of Japanese cooking knives. And I love sharp things, so I went to their website and was not disappointed. Their selection of knives is amazing, well their selection of cookware and other Asian kitchen equipment is very good. The quality of the products is awesome. I only wish they had more selection. The customer service is pretty good. They are not that quick to return emails, perhaps about 3-4 days before on average, but I had one where they didn't get back to me for a whooping 10 days. Must have slipped through the cracks with that one email. The couple of times that I have called were also pretty good, a bit of a wait time to get someone, but the information was good. The only thing I would knock them down a star are for the prices. I know things from Japan, on average are quite expensive. I am all for paying for quality and service, but I think they really do charge a premium for their stuff. I can get the same or very similar knife at other companies for less, but like I said their selection is usually better. Korin has Extremely Poor Customer Service and Attitude I purchased a knife for my son who is a professional Chef for a Christmas present. I paid over $350 and an additional $25 for engraving. When the knife arrived, though beautifully wrapped and packaged, there was no engraving. Okay, no big deal. Mistakes happen. I was not angry, but of course was entitled to a prompt refund for a service that wasn't performed. When I called to request a refund for the engraving which wasn't done, the sales clerk said - GET THIS -- YOU NEED TO SEND ME A PICTURE OF THE KNIFE! - presumably to ascertain whether I was lying or not. As if after spending that much for a knife, I would have the gall to ask for a $25.00 refund just because. I don't need the $25.00. I had to go through the trouble of taking a digital photo and sending it to her, and then SHE HAD THE NERVE TO SAY that the engraving is typically done on the other side of the knife (that was not shown in the photo). The refund was relunctantly made, but not until I had sent several nasty emails. Absolutely incredulous that a reputable company would behave this way! I would never buy from them again. How insulting and petty. Whatever happend to good customer service so that customers return again and again. NEVER! read more

Very friendly, knowledgable, and accommodating staff. Knives are their specialty and they have quite a selection. It does help to have a sense of what you want, since the choices are so many, but the staff will guide you. Great place to shop if you're left handed and need a really sharp knife. Amazing selection of Asian knives - if you thought Shun and Global were the only companies that made Asian knives for western hands, you're in for a surprise (BTW, they don't sell either brand or any German knife brands). read more

I brought my badly chipped and fairly old yet beloved Japanese multipurpose knife to Korin for a repair job that I was sure was going to be impossible. However, that was not the case! I just picked it up from the super friendly staff there and was shocked and excited about how great it looked. I feel like I have bought a new knife for a tiny fraction ($15) of it's original cost. Insanity. Knives everywhere here. Glorious knives. One feels you've stumbled into a Klingon armory or Hatori Hanso's workshop. (ok I'm geeking out a bit) seriously, you've never seen such knives. They are works of art (trust me I'm an art Professor). It makes me stop to wonder if I could even justify using one of these incredible instruments. They have a knife for just about anything. Not to be missed is the $9K Tuna blade. It seriously looks like an instrument of destruction. The staff is super friendly and helpful, even to some guy like me who wandered in off the street. They have other special Japanese cookwares, but the knives are what is all about here. After a quick look I can tell they have quite a range to fit both budgets and cooking techniques. If I ever win the lottery I'd definitely stop in here. Maybe someday, maybe someday....... It's cool though just to come inside this place to look at all they have. I've ordered knives from this establishment before but after the last order, I will never order another. The knife received had a poorly finished edge on the handle that would cut your hand when using. I complained about it and the customer service department was very nasty. They allowed me to return the knife on my dollar but they only gave me store credit. So I had to buy another knife from them at higher value. To top it off, when I reviewed the knife on their website, they never published the review. Apparently they don't like bad reviews. This is a bad company. read more

I love to cook and have always used German knifes. i keep them very, very, sharp but the blade angles on these knives make my German knives feel as dull as a butter knife. As a wanna be chef, shopping at the same place that some of NYC's finest chefs shop is a very unique experience. I bought my first knife from them mail order several years ago, a Masamoto VG Gyutou and it is still my favorite knife. Incredibly sharp and fairly easy to keep sharp, it is a pleasure to use. We were visiting NYC and I decided to make the journey downtown to the store. It is a very small storefront and you really have to be looking for it to find it. I was greeted by a very friendly and knowledgeable salesman and we discussed what I was looking for in a knife. I wanted a santoku and a paring or petty knife. He showed me several selections and I asked for recommendations, he suggested the Togiharu Hammered Texture Damascus set, with both santoku and petty, - I agreed and he offered to have them sharpened by the inhouse knife-master. The knives are beautiful to look and and use, razor sharp, well balanced, they feel like an extension of your hand. If you like to cook and are in NYC, spend a few hours and visit this one of a kind shop. read more

This store caters to the professional chef in terms of their knife selection, but they have a ton of cool stuff for your kitchen at home as well.
