I drove up from Philly to look at a Rolex 5513. I wasn't sure if it was worth the trip, because there were some inconsistencies in the photos (pointed instead of flat 4, inconsistent patina on hands/dial/bezel, strange gloss on the bezel). Eddie assured me that it was just a safe queen and that I would not be disappointed if I made the purchase and that I had a week to return the item after purchase if I had it shipped. I was still pretty unsure, but the price was (too) good... so instead of having it shipped, I went up to Island Park with the wife and stopped by. Eddie was at the store and I asked to look at the aforementioned watch (didn't tell him we'd been emailing previously). He put the pressure on me to buy, but when I pointed out the inconsistencies and that it looked like a poor redial, incorrect hands, bezel insert from an incorrect period (appeared to be a superluminova variant) he told me I didn't know anything about watches and insinuated that I probably don't belong in the store or wearing such a fantastic timepiece given how little I know. I proceeded to the show him my business card from a highly reputable watch dealer in the Philadelphia area (I have since retired, but still had the card and the knowledge). He then asked me to leave after I asked if we could open up the watch. I am not sure if the watch was fake or just poorly refurbished. Regardless, this was a definitive case of predatory and deceptive sales. It's likely that the store was tricked on it's value when they originally purchased the fake/refurbished 5513 and they don't want to take a ~6K bath. Either way, he put the watch back in the display, so hopefully no one bought it. I wonder how many other "gems" exist in this store that the owners pass off as authentic and pristine to non expert buyers. There was a lot of expensive art on display that looked nice, but I would need an expert to purchase anything from them. If I wasn't a watch expert, I could have been easily fooled. And since I am certainly not an art expert, purchasing from this store in general would be foolish. If you ended up purchasing a 5513 from this place in 2020 and got the back opened up, please feel free to DM me and I will update whether or not the watch at least had the correct movement (I suspect not).
