I've been hearing lots of negative and positive things about the food so I had to go see for myself. The new place is smaller than I imagined but very beautiful. Service was fast for a busy day. We had a party of eight. Food was brought out hot. I ordered the pork chops & fried catfish. I also ordered garlic mash potatoes & fried corn. I ordered fried green tomatoes & a peach cobbler. Fish was just ok. Too thin of a filet. Pork chop was very thin and tough. Mash potatoes were dry & had no hint of garlic flavor. Fried corn tasted boiled, not fried. The things I loved was the cornbread, peach cobbler and fried green tomatoes. I tasted the fried wings and yams from someone else's order and they were very good. You can't go by what others think of the place. You must go and see for yourself. I'm going back now that I know what I enjoyed and I will order those things. Wish the order for fried green tomatoes were 8 or 10 slices vs four. Four is not enough for the price of them. Final note. Everyone at the table was expressing how high their prices are. I totally agree. My total price was over $50 for just me. Very high! read more

Today I went Kountry kitchen, I ordered catfish with mac and cheese and cabbage. Everything was terrible. The fish didn't taste like catfish. It was very hard and chewy. The Mac and cheese was dried out and mushy. The cabbage was just ok. I will never eat there again. Soul food places in Indy are just subpar. Phew, rough night! Honestly, feels like a 1 star but this place also seems like an Indy staple so I didn't want to be too harsh in case I just happened to be there on a bad night...although after reading many other reviews, it looks like it may just be normal over there. Made a reservation for a Saturday night. Got there right on time, line out the door. Good sign, I though! (also, there's a sign on the door that says not to park on 19th St, even though the street isn't marked with any kind of no parking signs so I had to go move my car, which was annoying). Was seated. Waited over 30 minutes to even be greeted! No one said "hi" or brought us water or anything! Just hung out. We finally found someone to ask because we needed to order in time to make it to the theater. No one know who our server was, one person said she'd take our order but didn't have the electronic machine, one person said she'd write it down but didn't have a pen, another person said they didn't usually serve tables and worked in the back but they'd try to figure it out and on it went. The whole night went on like this. A comedy of errors. The food did arrived. Not impressed. Cornbread dressing was dry. Chuck roast had visible grease on top. Server didn't know how to split a check. It was a mess. Really, really poor customer service. Hope they're able to figure it out. read more

** DO NOT EAT HERE ** I would give this review 0 stars if it was possible. We arrived around 4pm and were put on the wait list, it was just 2 adults and 2 kids. They were going to text us when our table was ready so we sat in the car because there is not much room to wait and we had 2 little kids and were told the wait would be an hour. We tracked our place in line and could see we were next. At the 2 hour mark we received the text that we were off the waitlist so we headed in and they told us we had to wait longer because they have a reservation for 20 people that they were needing to clear the space for and that they took priority over us. This was so frustrating on many levels, first they should've 100% said that up front before telling us it was going to only be an hour. But they made no effort to work it out and simply said "there's nothing we can do, it's going to be a longer wait for you before we can get you a table". As we were leaving we heard 2 other parties complain also and say they need to do a better job with their customer service. We have never ever had such a terrible experience. read more

The food after they reopen, And Ed was completely disappointing as was the service. The staff was completely unorganized, and the food was mediocre at best. my boyfriend has been trying to get me to come here for months and we finally got a chance to go tonight. When we first arrived we stood at the hostess stand for 10 minutes before we were greeted. Then continued to wait another 20 minutes before being seated. There were several open tables while we were waiting and most of the staff on the floor were moving slowly and carelessly. My organization used Kountry Kitchen as our caterer for a team awards ceremony today. They provided light appetizers, deserts and drinks. The worked with our budget for our group of about 75. Our event was at a venue and they arrived early, set up and tore down. Working with their catering manager, Ms. Pat, was great. We recently had the repast at Kountry Kitchen's event center side, following my mom's homegoing service. The KK experience reflected 3 of my mom's qualities: classy, delicious cook, and warm attentive service. The fried and baked chicken was flavorful down to the bone- without an oversalted artificial taste. Loved the fried catfish fillets. I highly recommend the fried corn, collards, and cabbage. Everthing was fresh, not oily, and well seasoned without pork and excessive salt. The chandeliers in the ballroom sparkled elegantly. The restaurant side is appealing, and modern. My mom loved the food at the old Kountry Kitchen. I think she smiled down from heaven to see friends and family enjoying great food and atmosphere in her honor. We had a reservation and the host was not the most welcoming and had to wait at the stand for some time before getting their attention. Upon being seated, it took about 15 min to be greeted. Checking this place out after a referral from a friend! We were looking for something good to eat and their menu supported just what we were looking for... SOULFOOD! You know, that comfort food that makes you sleepy when you finish eating!!! The have both a brunch menu and an original menu that you can order from. We ordered from the original menu. Some of the dishes we ordered included the whole catfish, seasoned to perfection, with yams and cabbage, the choose two combo with fried chicken and meatloaf with corn, pinto beans, and Mac n cheese. The other choose two included chicken and catfish filet with yams, greens, and mashed potatoes. We also had a shrimp combo that included fried fish and shrimp. The whole catfish is a large portion fried to perfection. If you question whether or not to purchase two, DON'T- (unless you have a hearty appetite.) The chicken wings were HUGE! They were tough and not seasoned very well. The sides were all seasoned perfectly! The meatloaf was delicious with a ketchup glaze on top. Mac n cheese was very tasty. Fried shrimp were gumbo sized and seasoned very well like the catfish. We didn't have a reservation, but we were seated immediately, so the service was really good. Our server came to the table shortly after we were seated and provided us with some menus and she took our drink order. When she returned with our drinks, we placed our orders. It did take a while for us to get our food, but the place was extremely busy, and all of the food was prepared to order. Once the food did arrive to our table, it was all delivered at the same time. The food was well prepared and hot! Clearly, this place has just been recently renovated. There are several pictures of different celebrities that have visited the establishment. It's not a very large restaurant, but most table tops are for seating parties of four. Check it out if you are in the Indianapolis area! We will be going back!!! read more

I could be wrong , but I believe the sides offered to customers for delivery have gotten smaller and smaller. (A good example is the creamed corn, as shown in the pictures. It was miniscule. I just don't think as a general rule that the value of KK offerings carries the value that it used to. read more

I wanted to really like this place. I really did. I've been on a beef manhattan kick for a while and theirs sounded very nice from the description. I got the beef manhattan with a side salad (or so I thought - I ended up getting charged for a dinner salad), iced tea, mac and cheese, greens and pecan pie slice. I ended up with a bill for $50. I was pretty shocked at that alone. The manhattan was incredibly bland - even for Indiana. The garlic potatoes showed up pretty much as just texture, the beef and gravy were also barely there. I tasted a hint of beef and some salt. It's the reason for the 2 stars on the food. I've had better manhattans at two well known hole in the wall places for far less money. The mac and cheese was the star of the meal. They did well with that dish even for the high price. The greens were decent but nothing special. The pecan pie was the same - good but nothing special. The server was personable and smiled. She offered recommendations when asked. She did well and got the usual 20 despite having somehow decided I wanted the dinner rather than the side salad. What I'm mostly shocked by is the high price despite the overall quality of the food. Do yourself a favor and hit the other well-known soul food places in town. I had the pleasure of trying this place when the older couple I companion care for wanted to try it. They are well-to-do, native New Orleanders, love soul food, creole and trying new places. The atmosphere is clean, modern, and comfortable. The photos on the wall and the mural near the front are a fun addition making it feel like home. As soon as we walked in, nobody else was there. I said aloud, "Let's find a table" and was quickly told, "I said wait a minute" by the waitress who appeared from around the corner. (clearly I didn't hear her) It was abrupt and set me back a little. The lady ordered the wings, cornbread dressing, yams; the gentleman ordered a hamburger and fries and I ordered yams and crab bisque. The yams and cornbread dressing were very good. The bisque was good but a little too salty. The burger and fries were your standard fare. A huge work group entered while we ate and had a great time. Our waitress was short, and slightly impatient with the elderly couple who asked questions and have some cognitive decline. Our meal was $65 and our tip reflected our service. A few weeks later, I returned with the lady who stopped by for a carry out order. She reported the same "rude" waitress was there and that she would not be returning. Visited this soul food while in town for the 4th. Stopped in on a recommendation. We ordered chicken meal it was supposed to be 4 jumbo pieces but they only gave me 2 pieces so I wasn't happy about that! The chicken was good along with the yams and cabbage. We ordered greens as well but they also didn't give us the greens that was ordered. The peach cobbler was delicious and you could taste the flavor and butter so someone truly knew what they were doing with that. We ordered that catfish and grits and that was good! However it was wayyyy more grits than fish as when I first opened my to go box I thought I had the wrong meal because all I saw was grits with no fish literally had to do a search and find to locate my fish ! The restaurant looked nice in the inside and there were only a few people eating but it took so long to get out to go order that you would've thought the restaurant was full! We also ordered meatloaf it was not good- bland, and tough, Mac and cheese disgusting not good at all no flavor, not cheesy just not good! Dressing definitely not good don't even risk putting it in your mouth as you will be very offended! The portions provided were way too small for what you are paying for as well!! Come on now ! Do better KK at least give people enough for what is being charged !! Needless to say I would only get a handful of items from this place: peach cobbler, yams, cabbage, and fried chicken. This is one of my favorite places to get "southern" food from in Indianapolis. It has a nice and cozy family vibe. The service is great and they all make you feel seen and taken care of! I usually get the grilled fish, but have also had the smoked turkey. Both are pretty good. The fish could have used a little salt, but I appreciate having the option to add it myself. As a person coming from out of town there was no communication from this place. Called no answer. Got there and it looks like a mechanic shop. Go in and no one speaks to you. Workers standing around. Very unwelcoming. I used to always make it a point to stop by here when I came to Indianapolis but after this visit I'd say don't waste your time. Kountry Kitchen has been an Indianapolis soul food staple for years. Several years ago their original building burned down forcing them to move to a carryout only location for a couple of years. Eventually, they were able to rebuild their restaurant at its original location. I just visited them in the updated restaurant and...let's just say I have a lot to say. First, the building. The exterior is modern. Not bad looking. I parked in the parking lot next to the building. Tell me WHY they put the entrance to the restaurant on the complete opposite end of the building from the parking lot. That was the first thing that had me scratching my head. I get it...you have a new event space that is right off the parking lot, but most of your business is going to come from the restaurant. So, if you have a disability (as I do), be forewarned. You will have a little walk to get from the parking lot to the main entrance. Once inside, the first thing that I noticed is that the main restaurant dining room wasn't very big. Maybe there was a second dining area that I did not see, so take this comment with a grain of salt. The dining area seemed a little cramped to me. Some of the tables were REALLY close together. The booths looked big and spacious enough. I was seated at a table for one. It was fine. The chairs are more like lounge chairs than restaurant chairs, but it was fine. My chair felt a little wobbly, so they might want to tighten chair legs with all the dragging I'm sure the chairs get. Honestly, the interior felt cold and impersonable to me. Their old restaurant, while old and worn, had character. There pictures of celebrity visitors everywhere. I mean, this place also has pics of celebs, but they are too high to see and clustered over a booth, so you can't get a close look. They desperately need artwork. I also don't think there was any music playing which would have also livened up the atmosphere. The ceilings are REALLY high, so the vibe was just blahhh. My waitress was nice enough. I asked for a lemonade ($5.99!!!) And a water with no ice. I got a water WITH ice, but whatever. It's one little mistake, but read on. I ordered the oxtails which I think were the most expensive thing on the menu (I think). The two sides I got were the collard greens and dressing with a side of cranberry sauce. For roughly $28, I got three, smallish oxtail bones. The first oxtail I ate was PERFECTION. It was juicy and succulent. Fell off the bone and melted in my mouth! Seasoned PERFECTLY! I was so happy! The second oxtail I tasted was a little larger than the first (I would say almost a medium size oxtail), but that sucker was tougher leather. It was dry and did not come off the bone easily. I think it needed to be braised a couple more hours. The third oxtail was equally tough. I was disappointed because they started off so promising. 3 out of 5. At this rate, I'll stick with the Jamaican joints because they give you more oxtails for cheaper and they NEVER miss! Next up, the greens. Chiiiiiiiiillllle lemme tell you, those greens were TOP TIER! Some of the best I've ever had. Period. Only bad thing about the greens was the bowl was too small. 5 out of 5 all day! And the cornbread that came out with it was also good. A little sweet, but not too sweet. 4 out of 5. I also ordered one of my all time favorite foods -- dressing. I have no complaints. It was very, very good! Only thing is that I like cranberry sauce with my dressing. They literally give you a thimble size of cranberry sauce. Imagine a container big enough to fit maybe one olive in. That's how tiny their cranberry sauce container was. When the waitress brought it out, I immediately asked for more, but it never came. In fact, she did not check on me until it was about time for the check. To drink, I had the lemonade. Let me tell you, it is diabetic shock sweet! I was grateful for the ice in it to help dilute the sweetness, but it was so good! lol You might want to get a cup of water to dilute the flavor a bit. All-in-all, the meal was not terrible, but it could have and should have been better. Putting up some artwork, turning on some jazz, only serving tender oxtails and serving up a larger portion of cranberry sauce would make a huge difference in the customer experience. Will I go back. Sure. Not sure I would order the same items (except those greens)! Oh yeah! That brings me to one more thing...if you used to go to the old restaurant, expect higher prices. A LOT higher prices. It's kind of crazy, but it is what it is. I spent $40-something dollars for my entree and lemonade with tax and tip. It was approaching the $50 mark. If you're on a budget, don't bother. This is an iconic restaurant at 18th & College. The welcoming environment, is a perfect setting to enjoy the delicious menu items. There's something for everyone. I had the Circle City Cobb salad with a southern twist of black-eyed peas and a delicious sweet onion vinaigrette. My husband raved about the smothered pork chops served with mashed potatoes and green beans. You wouldn't know that Amber, our server, had only been on the job three days. What a sweetheart! Her service was better than most 4 star restaurants we've at which we've eaten. We broke down and got the pecan pie-- sooo good. If you're in the neighborhood-- check it out and give it a try. They're located inside the Ruckus building but parking is ample and there are signs telling you where to enter the building. They currently offer takeout and curbside pick-up only as there is no dining space in this building. We ordered online with no issues and the wait was only about 20min on a Wednesday evening. The food was hot and delicious, and they reviewed my order, opening every container to ensure it looked correct before I left the building. Staff was friendly and helpful. I had the catfish, mac & cheese, collard greens, & cornbread. The mac was thick and cheesy and the greens were super flavorful. They're all things I would order again, but I'm looking forward to exploring more of the Kountry Kitchen menu. read more

My take out order was completely wrong; I didn't realize this this until I was on the bus headed home.I reached out on 3 occasions about getting a refund and was finally told I needed to come back and receive it in cash. It was a 2 hour bus trip and 1.5 miles of walking. I do not have a vehicle. That didn't make any difference to the manager I spoke with. I emailed the owner, Cynthia Wilson, about it. She replied and said she would call me. It's been a week and no call. I have my receipt and wanted to ask her if a check could be mailed to me.
