Go here to try authentic Kerala dishes like Fish pollichathu, Crab masala, Chicken peralan, Beef Ularth, Appam, Parathas etc. Biryani was pretty good too. Parota was typical Malabar parota with layers are thin and crispy and melts in your mouth. The Chicken peralan was tender and very flavorful. Another noted thing is generous quantity. I like this place because it's one of the only Indian restaurants in Tracy that offers dosa. We've been here twice, and times both times on Saturday night. These were usually one or two tables inside. The service was good, but they were obviously short-handed as one waiter served all the tables while the phones kept ringing. Food: Dishes Recommended: *Dosa (4 stars) - Though these dosa were not the crispiest I've had, they still had a good texture and the potato filling with a myriad of spices (mustard seed, fresh curry leaves, ginger, turmeric, etc.) was very delicous. Especially when paired with the tomato and coconut chuntney on the side. -Spicy arani dosa: if you like spicy, try this one -Mysore malasa dosa: comes with some vegetables *Mutton biryani (3.5 stars) - Indian fried rice with mutton (with lots of bones), cashews and raisins. I wish it was more spicy. The meat was very tender, and the rice was well-cooked, but it didn't have too flavorful. I enjoyed it way more mixing it with other curry sauces. *Shahi paneer (3.5 stars) - I was hoping it would be a thick gravy with a strong tomato taste. But like most curries, it was runny. Good flavor. *Mango Lassi (4 stars) - I got this twice. I enjoyed that it came with some cardamom inside, but the second time it was very liquidy and too much residues. Mediocre dishes: *Chicken 65 appetizer (3 stars) - Fried chicken on hot grill with onion and fried mint leaves. You can really taste the lemon juice. *Okra/ vendakka curry (3 stars) - The curry tasted fine, but the okra pieces were black, doesn't look too great. Came for lunch today. After reviewing a menu at your table you order the food at the cash register and get a number. The cashier was friendly and helpful explaining the different dishes. We ordered fish pakora, masala dosa, goat peralan, and kerala porotta. The ingredients were fresh and each dish was very flavorful. Will definitely be returning. We chanced upon Kovalam Restaurant on a trip back to the Bay Area. To begin with the name has a strong connection to our homeland and the food too connected us to what we would get in Kerala. We had Chicken roast, Porotta, Idiyappam, Egg biriyani and Tea. The chicken dish was authentic kottayam style, Porotta was exceptional, biriyani was lip smacking, rounded them up with a traditional tasting chai. I tried their goat biryani which was really good. Very different from usual. Had more nuts and raisins and was made out of a granular rice. It was $18 but had many pieces of meat and was quite tasty. Sambhar and dosa were good too. Sambar had many vegetables (unlike typical sambhars which are just lentil soups). Overall an interesting experience. read more

We moved to mountain house quite recently and looking for good indian resutaurant's in and around tracy. There's isn't many at the list but one which caught our attention was "Kovalam". We instantly reached out to the number and it was answered by one Mr.Philip. He was very humble and kind enough to explain the options they had and what we were looking out on our craving time! We ordered beef, chicken, lamb and some fish and we can't explain how perfect it was in taste and spice. Even Mr.Philip asked us if you want the orders can be less spicy (customized for kids/adults). They have an excellent variety of food at an affordable price and most importantly they also have a Indian grocery store within the same store. I had kovalam for dinner today for the first time. I ordered a masala dosa and it comes with two chutneys tomato (nice heat) and coconut. The tomato chutney was delightful, good flavor and spice. The coconut chutney was a bit too runny and the coconut and liquid separate, so that could be worked on for better consistency. The sambar was great, better than the dosa. It had nice heat, flavor, good mix of veggies and on a cold day or with a cold this would be a good choice. Now the dosa. I had high hopes for the dosa based on the pictures and people in the restaurant were ordering the dosa as well, so I assumed good things. The dosa really wasn't memorable, first the Togo packaging. They package in a styrofoam container which causes the heat in the dosa to sweat and makes the dosa crepe soggy. I wish they put in aluminum foil to retain heat and avoid the condensation caused by the styrofoam box. The dosa filling was flavorful, but a few of the potatoes were not fully cooked. I will give this place another chance because I can see the potential in their food. read more

Update after the next order: I have to give 5 stars as they acted on the previous review and it does makes a lot of difference. Not only was I able to reach the restaurant on phone and place my order easily, they also texted me with the pick up ETA and called back to confirm the same. That was a busy kitchen yesterday and I have to give it to Philip and his wife, they had party catering for close to 700 people but they also made sure that my order was not impacted by that. The food was as usual super yummy and was ready to be picked up right on time. Please be very careful when buying the fish from this store because they sell overpriced, rotten fish. In the store, you cannot touch and feel the fish and you cannot choose the specific one you want because they will choose it for you from the tray. This is how you get deceived by getting bad fish. In the WhatsApp group they will put the pictures of the fish and they will display the good fish on the top and put the bad fish on the bottom and when you go to the store, they will give you the bad fish. The owner should follow some business ethics and the money which the customer pay is hard-earned money. read more

Really disappointed with the food here. Went in here with recommendations from yelp reviews since I was craving for some south Indian food and I must say the food here doesn't taste good at all. We ordered only 2 plates of Dosa - and it turned out to be don't know if I would go so far as to say that this is the worst Indian food I've ever had, but I'm fairly close to saying that , aloo masala filling was completely stale.(Can you imagine?). Chutneys - all strange tasting. Somehow they managed to mess up even plain coconut and Tomato chutneys. All in all, I literally don't have a clue what these reviews are talking about. Out of all Indian restaurants I've been to in the Bay Area for past 2 decades, this restaurant has the best mutton buriyani I've ever had. Just writing about it makes my mouth watering. Of course there are different kinds of buriyani like Andhra, Hydrabadi, Pakistani and so on but nothing could beat this one. It's funny I'm praising this small Indian restaurant in Tracy and unlike Sunnyvale or Fremont or San Jose, there aren't that many Indian restaurants in Tracy. Yet, this place has exceptionally great buriyani. They earned my 5 stars. One word of advice for those of us mortal souls, ask for medium spicy. When they say spicy they mean it. read more

When finally someone picked up, I did tell them that I was trying to reach and was the restaurant closed that no one is picking up the phone for this long and the guy was just plain rude, and said "I am not here to answer your question, just tell me why you called" in a very rude way. My family and I went there for their weekend lunch buffet. Unfortunately, the buffet was awful. If anything, it has to be one of the worst buffets I have ever been to. The buffet had limited options and there was not very many meat items. The only meat item that was at the buffet was the fish curry. But the fish curry was very bland and there was not many fish pieces in it. I was hoping to see at least chicken curry, fish pakoras, and chicken biryani. But there was none at the buffet. My family and I have eaten South Indian food many times and we were even hoping to see idli and sambar. There was sambar at the buffet, which tasted okay. I've had better. But no idli. My father asked one of the employees about their food choices for the buffet and he told him that they switch the menu items all the time for the buffet. I can understand switching menu items here and there but at least have better variety of food that everyone will enjoy. If my family ever decides to give this place another chance I think we'll be better off ordering off the actual menu than eating the buffet because of how limited the food choices were.
