I am so happy to have found this restaurant. Now my wife and I don't have to drive all the way to south Bay to have authentic Kerala food. The food they serve reminds me of my Mom's food. They have extensive menu and specializes in Kerala food. Their Sunday buffet has good selection of variety of Kerala dishes and price is very reasonable. The restaurant and adjacent grocery store is cleverly designed to have the right partition with easy access to each other. Been trying to place an order on phone and called over 10 times in 40 minutes and no one picks up the phone. When finally someone picked up, I did tell them that I was trying to reach and was the restaurant closed that no one is picking up the phone for this long and the guy was just plain rude, and said "I am not here to answer your question, just tell me why you called" in a very rude way. I just kept the phone down. It has happened to me before and I have bought food from them before and food was good (bit oily) but tasty. This is how shops screw up their reputation. read more

It was such a great pleasure to try Indian food from southern India. If you enjoy Indian food but would like to try a different style of the cuisine, I highly recommend trying Kovalam. We had the Masala Dosa, fish curry and another one of their traditional entrees abs loved every bite. I went with my 90 year old father and my 6 month old son so my hands were full. The owner was so sweet and kind that he even helped walk my dad out _by the hand_. What a truly sweet gesture. I was so touched by his story of how he came here and started his restaurant and the very evident kindness in his heart. I loved the food and look forward to challenging myself to try new things from the menu next time I return. I rated this a 4 in terms of quality of food and flavors. Went here with my family on a Sunday night and wasn't very busy! We ordered the Gobi (which was AMAZING 10/10 recommend! i don't like cauliflower but this was great), Paneer (which was nice but too sweet for my family's liking) and three dosa...now we didn't know how big they were going to be but they're HUGE! One is definitely enough for two people! However, they don't have a menu yet, only a blackboard up front! Overall a good place to try some Indian food and dosa. Being a mallu , it has not been easy to find a restaurant that serves food like home. Kovalam is the only place where my husband and me travel 40 miles to eat Malabar food when we really crave the Kerala touch . In the last year, we have gone many times and not once have the taste disappointed us. The porattas are so fresh and so tasty, they remind us of the food back home at thattukadas. Beef roast is the best. Kudos to the chef for personally making each dish and this kind of service makes us feel so good about eating here. They recently have started limited seating which is great so we dont have to sit in the car and eat (which is what we do when we can't wait to get back home to eat fresh poratta and curry) We recently took our friends from Chennai there and they too loved the dishes there. Really authentic Indian food. We happened to stop by while we were in Tracy. The food was very tasty and even ordered chicken biryani to go. We really loved the parotta and the beef roast curry. One of these days we will make a drive just to eat here. I never write reviews, but this place is totally worth writing about. Went there for lunch on Saturday. We ordered two dosas and chole with puri. Each item tasted different, and each one was delicious. Our favorite part was that the food tasted fresh and not pre-made. The food was mediocre. We were the only ones there the entire time. We ordered Mysore Masala dosa but got Spring dosa instead. I asked repeatedly and was stood that we were given Mysore masala dosa. Delicious and Authentic South Indian food. We mainly use Kovalam's catering services as the restaurant is a little distant from where we stay. All our experiences with the food ordered from here have been great. The usual items we order for our functions/gatherings are the biriyanis of which the Lamb Biriyani is a must have. We recently ordered from Kovalam was for my daughter's birthday party. Their owner Philip is a very jovial guy and was very helpful with his inputs as we set up the menu. This time, we ended up ordering something different and went with ghee rice, beef and chicken peralan curries for a function of around 45 people. The food was delivered on time and special care was taken to ensure the freshness using food warmers. All the items were perfectly made, well spiced and there did not seem to be any compromise on the ingredients. The response to the food was overwhelmingly positive. We definitely recommend Kovalam to anyone looking for authentic South Indian food. It is the go to place for catering orders for our community here in Walnut Creek. read more

I am not one to give reviews. In fact I use Yelp and the reviews there to help me make my decisions. But my oh my has this restaurant exceeded my expectations. We arrived at Kovalam after a long drive all the way from Bodega Bay. We were exhausted and hungry and wanted nothing but a warm cooked meal. But Chef Phillip blew our mind. Never before have I tasted home to the extent I did last night. Biting into the ghee rice I felt like I was back at my mom's kitchen as she watched me eat after a long day. He was more than willing to accommodate us and serve us based on our cravings. The food was flavorful, the atmosphere clean, and most importantly the service was phenomenal. I am so excited to write this review about Kovalam restaurant services and grocery story run by Philip. We depend on this store for multiple needs - getting the best quality Indian grocery, get quick takeaway of Kerala dishes and for large party orders. As I have taken services from each of these several times, I will try to provide my review separately. Customer service: As a person, Philip is extremely down to earth, but take extreme pride in making sure anyone who visit his store get the best customer service and honest opinion about dishes, grocery items or quality of brands we pick. As this is a family run business, you will experience the same level of service from anyone helping you at the store. It's hard to find business owners who give more preference to quality of service than bottom-line. Philip is a good example for this. Kovalam Grocery store: They only keep best quality brands which they themselves use in their restaurant and catering business. As Philip is an executive chef by himself, he make sure that the store is always clean with well-arranged grocery aisles, fresh vegetables and meat. There were several instances where he recommended buying specific brand of items, based on his personal experience in consuming multiple branded items. Kovalam Restaurant: If you would like to taste some authentic Kerala dishes, you should visit his restaurant soon. All food are made to order with fresh ingredients, not with reused oil or reheated. They even give equal importance for presentation or aesthetics. As with any service industry, sometimes things may go wrong, due to various reasons. But he make sure that we provide quality feedback and ensures that it is implemented. Kovalam catering: Usually I never order outside food for parties done at home. The reasons are many - the food never tasted homely, by the time food reaches home, it would be cold and the quality of food is usually subpar. But for our child's last birthday party, we decided to place order from Kovalam as we had a fairly large group of 60+ guests. He sat with me for 30 minutes helping me decide the menu, gave me feedback on quality and quality, different sides that comes with it, how it should be presented, spice index etc. During the week, I made few changes to the menu, which he was always ready to make. The food was delivered on time in fully packed trays placed in some special warmers. We took the trays out from the warmers after 3 hours, we were totally surprised how professionally each trays were decorated and the food was piping hot. The snacks were super crispy and free of oil. The meat in the Biryani was so tender with very few bones, which is usually not the case when you buy from a restaurant. The sides for the Biryani was a full tray of salad and pickle by itself. All of our guests were extremely happy and were praising about the food. As he know that I don't like excess oil in food, he even thought about it while making each and every dish. I was extremely pleased with the quality of food, quality of food (learning for me as the quantity they provide is at least 40% more compared to other restaurants), packing and the customer service I received. Suggestion: I would also like to put forth few suggestions as well. (a) Probably should add your restaurant to the DoorDash services, so that people from Mountain House and nearby places can place delivery orders through their mobile service. (b) Dont offer discounts to your customers unless you have a slow moving item. We would like you to make healthy margin, so that we can continue to consume your good service. read more

Dessert was just one item, how can someone call it a buffet menu? The taste of available items also was not up to the mark. Food: We ordered the Dal Tadka, Veg Kurma, Fish Curry Kerala Style, Kerala Chicken Curry, and tandoori rotis. The food was absolutely delicious and the portions were decent. I give the food 5 stars. Details of fraud: We ordered takeout from here on Saturday, 8/4/2018 and picked up the food at 1:34PM. I paid using my credit card in their card reader. While my transaction was in progress, the female manager was packing up my order and making small talk. I asked about adding some drinks to my order, but the transaction was already in progress. Since the transaction was taking so long to process, I walked over to the attached grocery store and got some drinks, paid cash at the grocery store cash register, and then walked back to the restaurant to finish up my transaction. I signed for the purchase, thanked them, and walked out, inadvertently leaving my card in the reader. Later that evening at around 8PM, I realized my card was missing. I called the restaurant and spoke to the female manager who helped me earlier. She said that they found my card, and it'll be locked up in the manager's drawer until I could pick it up the next day. Since I don't live in Tracy, I asked my mom to pick it up. She picked it up on Sunday around 5:50PM. Between 1:34PM on Saturday 8/4 and 5:50PM on Sunday, 8/5, there were 6 fraudulent charges made to my card. My bank called me and informed me of unusual purchases. I logged into my online banking site and found charges for the following: Chevron Pittsburg - $45.00 Subway Restaurant Vacaville - $30.70 U-Haul of Vacaville - $106.40 Jack In The Box Vacaville - $28.71 RRS Johal Co Pittsburg CA - $34.86 RRS Johal Co Pittsburg CA - $45.00 I called the restaurant on Sunday evening to speak with the manager. As a courtesy, I wanted to let them know that someone stole my credit card info while it was in their possession and used it to make unauthorized purchases. I was respectful and asked if they might have security video footage that might help. The female manager I spoke with put me on hold and then transferred me over to a male who identified himself as the owner/manager. He immediately became defensive, irate, disrespectful, condescending, and started raising his voice, stating that they take no responsibility for the fraudulent charges, and it was my fault for leaving my card there. Fine, I understand. But he continued to say that they have multiple customer cards in their possession, and that people often leave their cards in their card reader because the card reader doesn't beep when the transaction is complete. He spoke further in a very condescending tone that they are not thieves, and they have customers who are millionaires who shower them with cash, and they have no reason to steal. He then proceeded to walk me through how to dispute fraudulent claims with my bank! It seemed like this has happened before, and that the owner/manager is used to receiving these types of calls from customers. If anyone else has experienced similar issues, I urge you to write a yelp review. It just strikes me as extremely fishy that my card was fraudulently charged multiple times while it was supposedly in the manager's possession in a locked drawer. In the end, I understand it's my fault for leaving my card there and I take full responsibility for my carelessness. I will be more careful next time. Boy, what a headache! read more

I have tried almost all the Indian restaurants in Bay Area. This is worst restaurant and ridiculous prices. 3 Idli & 1 vada is 10$ for such poor quality food. And the chutney they gave for togo is not even a spoon. I don't know how they got good reviews. I bet whoever gave good reviews must be their close friends or relatives.
