You would think that a large Store Like Lowes or Home Depot would carry things unavailable in a small local Hardware store like Kovarik. But since moving here a few years ago I find that isn't true. Today was a great example. I needed a part for a fluorescent light that I was sure I could get at Lowes because their inventory online said they had 5. But upon arriving at the store and spending 1/2 hour waiting for assistance. I discovered they had none.. I called Kovarik and after 2 min on hold was told they have it and would put it at the register. Kovarik will always be my first stop....unless I want a pizza then its New York chefs...(love their mushroom pizza) read more

I needed a part for a air compressor, checked on the Internet. The part was $4.50, which seemed like a reasonable price. Then you add shipping and handling which came to an additional $10.00. I took the part to the plumbing department , they matched the part. The cost was $3.50. Why buy online when you have a great store like this ! Reasonably priced, friendly and knowledgeable sales staff. I wish I could give them more than 5 stars. read more

This hardware store is like walking into Grandpa's cellar! If you've been here on a regular basis they call you by name! They've got everything hardware and more! Can't beat the prices either! Get your window screen repaired, an electrical extention cord repaired on the spot or have keys made. Even gag gifts, ice cream, or Anti Monkey Butt powder for us cyclists!! I don't normally give businesses five stars, but after you've been here a couple of times, you would too! The people that work at Kovarik's Hardware are the most pleasant, helpful people in the world. One time when I was in buying some nuts and bolts to mount a gauge in my car, one of the gentlemen working told me that he could sell me some thread lock to keep the nuts from coming off, but that I could use my girlfriend's nail polish and it would do the same damn thing. He was funny, too! I hope they never go out of business and I hope that I keep getting that same impression every time I go there. read more

I love this store! I've had keys cut there, both for home and work. I've gotten simple hand tools, fun stuff to build sets, candy and trashy novels from the front of the store. Needed a very hard to find plumbing fixture part for an older trailer tub faucet and these great guys took the time to find it [which no other big name store could] and had one in the store. Back when Inderlied's was on "The Avenue," Kovarik's was THE other farther east "Go-To" hardware store for advice, parts, explanations. Now, that avenue is just another street, but Kovarik (now affiliated with Tru-Value Hardware) is STILL a Hardware Store, First. When I moved from Tioga County, I had no more my-friend-the-neighbor's-barn ["It's in there, or he'll tell me how to make one up"] until I remembered Kovarik's. The prices only SEEM higher than a "Big-Box-Store," but I've found they really aren't, and I'd pay extra to talk to someone who has already done it, instead of "that's not my department, I think you can find what you want in Aisle 17." Kovarik's is by far the best hardware store I've ever been in. Everyone is an expert. Everyone is friendly and their goal is to make you a repeat customer and friend. The first time I was there, (47 years ago) Mr. Kovarik (not little Joey) help me with a plumbing job. He showed me how to do the job better, for a lower cost. I figured anyone who would make less money for themselves while helping me out is a wonderful source to have. I gave them (and it is a team effort) 5 stars and I'd make it 10 if I could! I was in town for parents weekend and needed to get a key cut for my son. This place floated to the top of Yelp's suggestions, and boy were we NOT disappointed! "Friendly" does not even begin to describe everyone we met. Living in Potsdam I won't have occasion to visit this place often, but I told my son: "If you ever need ANYTHING fixed, you come to this place. Best service of any business anywhere in the Binghamton area. Not like Home Depot etc. where you have to carry a flare gun to get attention of the staff. They ask what you need, get you to it in seconds, and have you out the door again and on your way. read more
