Good food! Love love the miso soup (i ask for extra tofu in it). My brother loves their sushi rolls - green turtle and dynamite.

Some of the best sushi I have had. The location and outside appearance was very off putting to me. Inside wasn't much either. Staff was beyond friendly. My husband and I ordered about 5 different rolls. We had the waitress recommend a few. Everything was delicious. The ice cream at the end was a great treat. We Brought our infant son and they we're accommodating to him. The brought out a sippy cup for him. Played and talked with him. We will definitely be coming back. I loved the food and the menu. It had everything is want in a Japanese restaurant. I would have given it five stars but the service was so bad that I had to take a star away. First of all, it was supposed to be two courses, but they brought out my friend's salad before everything. I ate it because I thought it was my salad that they had gotten wrong, then they brought out my sushi and my friend's dinner. Then they brought out my other friend's dinner, my other sushi and my friend's salad. My friend's dinner was supposed to be vegetable udon and it had a little shredded cabbage, a few shredded carrot pieces, and two pepper slices. Koya is a hidden gem. I have been a frequent visitor for almost 5 years. It is my favorite sushi place on the north shore. With about 10 tables and seating for 4 at the sushi bar, Koya has a cozy feel. The wait staff couldn't be any sweeter. They certainly take care of their frequent customers. Complimentary miso soup, seaweed salad, and mochi dessert helps me fill up without breaking the bank. I will share my experience, a group of good friends enjoying a beautiful summer night out on the town, decide let's have sushi. They order a variety of options and the presentation is artistically beautiful. I was encourage to try Unagi (freshwater eel) with the theory you should try everything at least once before you say you don't like it. Service was great and timely. We told the server it was our first time there which may have helped. Food: we were surprised by the free miso soup. The California crazy roll was amazingly good! We also had the volcano, smoked salmon which were delicious. The server once again surprised us with a free Japanese soda for my girlfriend and I. After another roll - he brought out two servings of Japanese ice cream. Also free! My girlfriend, who has been to quite a few sushi bars, said this was her favorite and had the best rolls! Great little place for sushi. Technically located in Highland Park - it's right on the border of Highwood, HP, Lake Forest - near the Ft. Sheridan Metra stop. I usually go for the Koya lunch special during the day, and get 2-3 different maki rolls if I come in the evening. Prices are very reasonable considering the quality of food. read more

Very disappointed. I've been here many times and besides experiencing a long wait one time, have had generally good experiences. Tonight, however, I went with some friends and we were treated very disrespectfully by our waitress. She was extremely aggressive and rude throughout the meal, and at the end, included a 20% tip on each of our bills claiming that she needed to because we got separate checks. We never even asked for separate checks. She did not deserve 20% because she made our meal unpleasant. I hope Koya works on their service. Went back and had a much more pleasant experience. read more

My fav. restaurant ever. Been going here since college. Amazing food, fresh sushi, very friendly staff. The part of this place is that I can bring people that don't like sushi and they still love it because their udon soups and teriyaki entrees are just as good. You will only dislike it if you are a snob. Don't expect a luxury over-priced sushi experience. Expect good food and to be treated nice, in a 'cozy' atmosphere with average pricing (for the North Shore). PS: expect some nice freebies for dinner - miso soup (very good), seaweed salad, and mochi after dinner. read more

I have been to this sushi restaurant many times and always enjoyed. However, we went this past Sunday - 3 people with a 7pm reservation. We were seated immediately and then the SLOW began. Our order was taken 20 minutes later and then it took another 30 minutes for the 4 sushi rolls we ordered. When the rolls were delivered to the table we were told that it was a "little" slow due to the fact that they ran out of rice. What? Really?? Our dinner of 4 sushi rolls were mediocre at best with small pieces of fish components and it took more than 1 hour. Not sure I will be going back. I went to this place on a Friday after work. I had been there once when it first opened years ago. I drive past it everyday so I decided to go because I had a craving for sushi. The place is tiny and the staff is so nice and very attentive. The dinner was great !! I had an appetizer of Golden Shrimp on a bed of shredded cabbage, it looked as if they had piped on the golden sauce and put it under the broiler. So good. The mi so soup was good too. I then had a spicy scallop salad. It was a bed of lettuce with some cold noodles on top of that and then the scallop salad on top of that. yes, it was spicy and I enjoyed every bite. After that I had a shrimp tempura roll which I equally enjoyed. For a dessert (that comes with dinner) they served a tiny helping of vanilla ice cream with some kind of "fondant" type covering. Two bites and it was gone... but hit the spot. Tomorrow is Friday again and it was a rough week so I will go back and maybe bring some of my friends from work. It is reasonably priced and everyone should give it a try and I bet it will be one of your "go to places" often. read more

I got violent food poisoning after ordering the sushi deluxe. It's been over 24 hrs and i'm still not completely recovered. Almost had to go to the ER with the severity of the dehydration, couldn't attend thanksgiving dinner due to the dizziness and fever. Never ever coming back. Will likely never be able to eat sushi again and my food arrived after everyone else at my table had finished theirs. The waitress should have simply told me that item on the menu wasn't available, I would have happily ordered something else. Instead I spent 3 days in bed with a fever and no appetite. read more

It is a good restaurant and serves good food. We tried to to make a reservation for 5 people and told them that one of our companion is handicapped and is on a wheelchair. They told me on thephone that the wheelchair won't fit in there restaurant, so what i did is i drove to there restaurant and check the place out. A wheelchair or powerchair would definitely fit in there. Butthey insisted that there bathroom is small. I told them that our companion doesn't need to use the bathroom because she is on urinary catheter. They are just so unaccommodating on Handicapped people.. Is just so sad when restaurants treat handicapped people unfairly and discriminate them!.. read more

This is my family's go-to sushi place. Other restaurants may have decent sushi, but not all have awesome non-sushi entrees for the pickier eaters. They've recently doubled in size, and the wait times have gotten a little longer. But with free miso and free dessert, who can complain? I have now been here twice. The shushi is fantastic, and without the downtown prices. The service was very attentive the first time I ate here, and not as attentive the second, but it was a whole different staff the second visit, so they may not have been as seasoned a waitress. I have been going to Koya since it first opened and I will keep coming back every time. It is probably my favorite sushi place in the area (and there are a lot of them). The prices are reasonable and the food is always good. The sushi is fresh tasting and well-presented. There are also a good variety of tasty appetizers. Its a small restaurant with a limited staff (although they've added more people recently) and they are still able to provide a satisfying experience. Even when they are full they get your food to you in a reasonable amount of time. The complimentary miso soup, seaweed salad, and mochi dessert with dinner are a nice touch. Having been to almost every sushi place in the area the consistently good food, good service, and reasonable price make Koya my top pick. read more

Very disappointing dinner at Koya on Sunday. The restaurant was recently remodeled and they doubled the size of the dining room. Unfortunately, they kept the existing size of the kitchen. When we arrived, there were multiple tables available and we were seated quickly. However, it took 10 minutes for any server to follow-up, and then only after we were looking around for help (and the servers, in turn, were looking at each other with no idea who should cover the table). It then took an hour for them to bring our food to the table, with the waitress beginning to apologize after it was clear that we and the rest of the patrons in the restaurant were becoming angry over the substantial delays. We then were told various stories for why there was a delay, first it was the sushi bar's fault, then it was the regular kitchen's fault. Even after our waitress promised our food would be out in 5 minutes, only one of four dishes arrived in those 5 minutes. After 15 minutes passed and we were still short one meal, we finally asked that it be bagged to go and our bill be brought. A different employee then brought the bill and said he took the "regular kitchen" meals off the bill due to the delay. read more
