Our family decided to go out for sushi one night and instead of going to our usual haunts, we tried out Sushi Susie. We went on a Monday night and the place was jammed. Thankfully we had a reservation. It's a testament to how good a place is when they are jam packed on a Monday at 7:30pm. The place has a bunch of tables an booths packed into the smallish space. It's light woods and cream colored walls presents a warm interior and a nice ambience despite the place being packed. They do have an all-you-can-eat option with a lot of variety including three dessert options. We all opted for the AYCE option and ordered drinks. Our server was the owner herself, Susie. My son, who is of legal drinking age wanted to try the Chinese beer they had. Susie explained that she has been waiting over six months for her liquor license and that Deerfield takes forever to provide them. She was very apologetic. We chatted with her about being BYOB and she said that wasn't possible either. C'mon, Deerfield, get you butt in gear and get them a liquor license. More liquor sales means more tax revenue. DUH! Anyway, we ordered othered hot tea and soda. She replenished the water for the hot tea often and was happy to do it. I've never been anywhere that provides free refills on hot tea (bags included). It was always nice and hot, too! I think they were not so prepared for the onslaught of customers on a Monday night. Susie was running back and forth between the sushi counter and the front door for delivery pick-up and serving the various tables in addition to the other server that was there. There were three of us. I started with edamame, sesame balls, and shrimp tempura. My son ordered the paper tuna, and my wife ordered the crispy jalapeno. All three of my appetizers arrived and then our rolls were brought out. The edamame, was very typical, but had a perfect amount of salt. The shrimp tempura was fresh and the dipping sauce was good and not too salty (which is an issue at most sushi places). The sesame balls were also very good, not too sweet and not too overly sesame. Next came our orders (not the paper tuna or the crispy jalapeno). I ordered the Shrimp Tempura roll (no avocado) and the Mexican Fire roll, plus two pieces of sashimi: the ebi (shrimp). I am not an adventurous fish eater and stick with shrimp. My wife ordered the Spicy Tuna roll and the Red Dragon roll. My son ordered the Godzilla roll, the Green Dragon roll, and the California roll. The sushi was really fresh and put together with care and love. The Mexican Fire roll is now one of my favorite sushi rolls and I have had nothing that compares to it with the exception of a special roll from Hakuya in Buffalo Grove. It needs to be noted that neither roll is like each other and both are delicious, but Susie's roll is much better. Both my wife and son liked their rolls as well and remarked about the freshness of the sushi. And after everyone finished their rolls, my son's paper tuna arrived along with my wife's crispy jalapenos. He said the paper tuna is worth visiting Susie's sushi if you're only ordering one thing. However, you should order more as the food is spectacular. But don' forget to order the paper tuna. They also tried the crispy jalapeno. Which was also very good. I'm a dessert person, so I had to order something and I got the fried bananas. What a great palate cleanser! I should have ordered it sooner to cleanse my palate between orders. All in all, Sushi Susie is a refreshing change from other sushi places. Susie is incredibly friendly and her food is really fresh. I recommend making a reservation before wandering in as we had one and the people who came before and after us did not and had to wait a while to get seated. Don't wait to go. Go now and go often. This ia a local place that needs to stay. Oh, and Deerfield? Grant them their liquor license already. read more

This was a fun spot to have lunch. Tucked away in a strip mall, it's roomy with lots of tables and booths. Also AYCE, if you care for that. I ordered a salmon bento, which had gyoza and a California roll -- generous portions. My companions split some nigiri and called it fresh, with generous slices of fish. It was plated so prettily and colorfully with an artistic presentation. When we were being seated, our wait staff said, we are sorry for the delay on Valentine's Day. I told them we had never dined there before. This puzzled me until I realized my sister must have dined there before. Confusion cleared up, the kitchen gave us some fried Oreos. read more

Another solid AYCE sushi option in an area that was lacking this choice until recently. The pricing is fair, lower actually than a lot of restaurants in this area -- considering the expansive menu as well. Parking is fairly easy inside a strip mall and the restaurant itself is a decent size, not enormous but that may help a bit with getting faster service and getting served faster. The menu is probably the best feature of this spot. The amount of appetizers available is quite unusual in this area, considering that you can get shrimp tempura, fried oyster, takoyaki, paper tuna (seared tuna in ponzu sauce), squid salad, and kani salad here. This brings together some of the better options of Sushi Grove and Galaxy Hotpot & Sushi onto this menu as well. On the flip side, they offer ice cream, fried banana, and fried oreo for desserts -- all of which were done fairly well. In terms of sushi, the choice is a little less than what you get from some other AYCEs, but that also means it's focused more on items that are generally enjoyed without all the filler items that people don't order. For those worried about the amount of rolls with a spicy element, the level of spiciness is very low, enough where the members of my party who generally don't eat spicy food had no issue with any of the rolls. The level of rice isn't too excessive and the cuts of fish are reasonably thick. Fish isn't the most fatty out there, but in line with what you generally expect from AYCE. In terms of sushi, the usual standout items -- Scallop, Unagi, and Salmon were the best for me. The other offerings were made nicely as well, presented neatly. For signature rolls, Green Dragon, Rainbow, Catapillar, and Crazy Kani were my favorites. I didn't love the spicy tuna offered here, but the avocado was fresh in every roll, and the shrimp tempura worked well with the fish. If you want to stay away from sauces, the regular rolls such as salmon avocado, spider roll, alaska roll, etc. were ways to get a good amount of fish and eat a bit healthier. Also make sure to get the sweet potato roll as well, if you want to eat vegetarian. Overall, solid option in the area with many good menu features and a less busy vibe that makes it good to take friends. We had the all you can eat - the food itself was quite good but the amount of rice in each sushi was just enormous. I went to countless AYCY sushi places but this place was number 1 - you see the sushi in their menu? Consider twice of that. The rice is usually much less than the fish but the length of the rice and the fish were the same. This is my first time seeing an AYCE sushi place giving us this much amount of rice on sushi - it was too obvious they wanted to fill you up with rice. My husband and I met some friends at Sushi Susie on Valentine's Day. While the restaurant wasn't decorated for the occasion, I did fall in love with the food. First we started with appetizers. We got the miso soup, crab ragoon, and salads, but my favorite was the tuna paper. It was my first time having this but it's worth a trip back just for this item! We then ordered nine sushi rolls and sashimi and it came on a big boat. The sushi was good and fresh but was not as sauced as I'm used to. You taste much more of the fish than the sauces and other flavorings. The desserts at Asian restaurants are normally an afterthought. But not at Sushi Susie. I've been meaning to check out Sushi Susie and finally had the chance recently. As much as I wanted to try their AYCE menu, we were short on time and decided to go with the lunch special instead. It wasn't listed on the dine-in menu, but after asking, they showed us the takeout menu where the special was available. We each got 3 rolls for $14.95, which was honestly a great deal. Between the two of us, we tried the salmon avocado roll, eel cucumber roll, Alaska roll, Boston roll, shrimp tempura roll, and spider roll. Shrimp tempura roll was my favorite which usually don't even make it to my order when I order sushi lol. Each combo also came with either soup or salad. The service was fine, but the sushi itself was pretty average. The rolls had a lot of rice, which normally wouldn't bother me for a non-AYCE meal, but the rice itself didn't really taste like sushi rice. Instead of being light, slightly tangy, and flavorful, it was dense and heavy. The biggest disappointment was the salmon avocado roll. The salmon tasted fishy, and after each trying a piece, we couldn't touch it. We didn't mention it to the staff since we were in a rush, but we ended up throwing our lerftovers away. I was really excited to try this newer AYCE spot, but after this visit, I'll probably stick to my usual sushi spots instead. read more

I was looking for an ayce sushi place in the area. Found out about this place and decided to try. Located in a plaza in Deerfield with plenty of parking. We were welcomed upon arrival. You can opt for the regular menu or the all you can eat. We did the all you can eat dinner at $29.99. Lot of options. A couple of appetizers we go were miso soup, seaweed salad, house salad, crab ragoons and shrimp tempura. All were very good. Entree wise, we ordered a couple of nigiris which I loved and one roll each. Kinda over estimated on how much. But worth it. Dessert, we opted for the fried Oreos. Came out fresh and hot. Overall a decent sushi place. The one bad thing is that there is a significant amount of rice. A lot more than a lot of the AYCE places we have been to more recently. The rice was decently cooked yet just too much of it and probably also because for the nigiri the fish was on the thinner end too for the thickness. We first got the rolls we ordered and the first set of rolls were nice with the right amount of fish to rice and seaweed combination. The second batch of rolls we ordered had smaller pieces of fish and hence more rice too. The typical small fish rolls with the single fish was a regular sized roll and not the smaller type of rolls you see at other locations. The scallop nigiri was more one scallop ever so thinly sliced and covering the top of two normal sized pieces of rice.
