I really enjoyed this meal! I have never been to Wajo Sushi before this visit but wanted to get some takeout to try it. The reviews were good. When I walked in the restaurant it had a small, cozy feel to it. I was surprised by the presentation of the meal because I wasn't expecting much for a pickup order. The sushi was delicious and I'd definitely come here again!
Got takeout. They were so kind, had my food ready on time, and were mindful of my allergy. Love the drawing on the miso soup.
I happened upon Wajo Sushi by accident, driving home tonight and having not had sushi since many months before Coronavirus began. What a great find! The signage on front is a little misleading in that their grand opening was December of 2019, but that's okay because between the grand opening sign and the open for business sign on a Friday night, my car drove itself into the lot. There's plenty of parking in front and exactly on Milwaukee Avenue in Riverside Plaza. Inside, it's very clean and bright and modern, with a very Japanese vibe. The decor is gray and white with the slightest touch of mauve or pink. It's welcoming, happy and energetic. I dug the cool digital menu board above. It's important to say, also, that the setup and staff are very covid-19 conscious. I ordered spicy tuna roll, and eight pieces came in the incredibly fresh and very pretty order. Alongside, I had two pieces of tobiko maki, piled high and bright and colored like a blood orange. In the corner was the standard blob of wasabi and a smallish pile of pickled ginger. In the opposite corner was finely shredded carrots and cabbage mixed together. Everything was divided nicely by the usual green plastic grass and two slices of lemon. Dinner was served on a cool, see-through purple, disposable plate. All of the drinks are served in bottles in a beverage cooler. There are number of Japanese choices and little tiny cans of Coca-Cola and other interesting things. I took a bottle of refreshing aloe juice. BONUS: there's a small sign at the cash register that says "free soup" and it's for everybody. So, for a starter, I had an absolutely delicious bowl of miso. It had just the right flavor in every way. My spicy tuna roll was so fresh and moist. There was enough of everything packed inside underneath the drizzled orange sauce. The eight pieces were modest in size but filling because of their moisture and nice flavor. They were not too fishy but also not bland, just right in the middle. The tobiko maki were larger in size and filling. The roe itself/themselves (How do you call a thousand little eggs collectively?) was not bursting in flavor, nor was it super poppy crunchy, but the pieces were piled high, very pleasurable to eat and filling. Customer service is always key, and the three staff members were so professional, polite, friendly, and helpful. Prices are very reasonable that Wajo Sushi. Way to go, Wajo! Arigato gozaimasu and see you soon!
The following review is based on experiences before the COVID-19 pandemic: Love the concept, not so crazy about the food. Wajo provides a wide variety of Japanese favorites in a more casual setting. Prices are a bit closer to what you'd expect from a fancier full service restaurant but I didn't find the flavor or execution of the food particularly special. The food itself isn't bad, presented nicer than the fast casual that you'd expect from an Asian supermarket or food court, however the food was nothing impressive, particularly in comparison to Sushi Gallery that used to occupy this spot. I found the California roll to be a bit monotonous in texture, without the creamy avocado and crunchy cucumber that I associate with this dish. The edamame was a little on the soft side. The salad was very generic, lacking a tasty miso dressing and the lettuce could've been more crisp. The tonkatsu was fried nicely, but the meat itself was quite lean and the sauce was mostly forgettable. The salmon poke bowl was a bit too spicy with vegetables like edamame, avocado cucumber, and lettuce that didn't taste super fresh. The salmon was also a bit lean and didn't have a great level of firmness. Overall an alright choice but there are options with better food and prices not too far away in other parts of the suburbs.
I found Wajo Sushi when I was searching around. I did not know it was so close to the area I live. I have to say it was refreshing to see. The service was great! The ambiance reminded me of a restaurant in Korea! The food quality was alright. I wished they had the menu items I was looking for but, it was sadly not available. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants a small local shop that isn't owned by a large company!
I really don't like having to write bad reviews but with the plethora of sushi restaurants this place needs to do better to compete. We went because, on a whim, my husband bought a Groupon. So, first off, our soup was served in styrofoam cups. The reasoning could be Covid, more conducive to outdoor dining, or whatever, in any case it's not ok. The soup itself was ok. Our appetizer roll came out, 3 pieces of sushi for 2 people. I noticed another reviewer complain of odd number of items being served to even number of diners, sometimes it's understandable, but, in this case not so much. The appetizer wasn't particularly good. Nor was the server; she just dropped the plate on the table without a word. Then when she brought our 3 sushi rolls out she did the same. Most sushi restaurants I've been to identify what each roll is. My husband had to go inside to bring us each a cup of water, again, styrofoam which promptly blew away when I set the cup down after I finished the water. The prices are a little bit steeper than other sushi restaurants. Some of the sushi was good, some bad, and some just ok. Generously giving them 2 stars for presentation and the sushi that was good.
I've had my fair share of sushi, and I must say...the rolls were BOMB. Had the salmon dragon and volcano rolls. 10/10 Also, they threw in a freebie. This is the kind of good vibes I needed right about now with everything going on. Thank you to those at Wajo!! You all rock. Wishing you the best.
We ordered three rolls of sushi, the tastes was good. The environment of restaurant was good and clean but after we ordered at the front desk then sat down, we didn't be served a cup of water or be asked if we need anything to drink so we change our order to takeaway. We like dine in at the restaurant that actually provide service. When we got our food and I guess we met the owner, he was very friendly and make sure we got the soy sauce and chopsticks.

Poke bowl was average and everything was fresh, but the jalapeño bombs were great! Staff was friendly, and the place looked clean and well put together. read more

It's was meh. I didn't like food. Service was very bad, the server only came up once and that's because we called her, she took out order and didn't tell us how to pay , where the drinks were how to get them! Nothing at all and I would not go back! It's a quite place read more
We visited for dinner one night as most restaurants in the area were closed. We came by the restaurant a little more than an hour before closing. And before we were even seated they asked us if we were ready to order as the kitchen is closing. I asked them what time they closed, they said you can sit here but the kitchen will be closed. So naturally we were rushing to order the first few things we saw on the menu. When we asked about drinks, she said, you can see the cooler, just grab what you want and we'll charge you for it. We were a little hesitant after that and just stuck with the room temp waters. Once our food came out, we truthfully didn't remember what we ordered so we asked her and she goes I'm not sure but if you look at the menu you can see. So just ate. My husband was craving fried rice so he ordered the chicken fried rice and it was essentially a bowl of rice with a hefty about of soy sauce, frozen vegetables and an egg on top. The vegetables were still rather frozen despite everything around it being hot. So he ate a few bites and just set it aside. Onto the sushi, I have no recollection of what we ordered... but they all tasted about the same and look the same. The tamago was nice. Overall the restaurant is a family run restaurant, we would've just enjoyed our experience better if we had more communication and service. read more

We ordered three rolls of sushi, the tastes was good. All 5 rolls we ordered were AMAZINGLY YUMMALICIOUS! Definitely will be back. We ordered spicy shrimp roll, unagi roll, chicken teriyaki roll, tuna dragon deluxe and the real crab deluxe, everything was fresh and delicious, plus great presentation, especially for takeout!! read more

Just ordered delivery and I have to say this was some of the best freshest sushi I have had in this area. It's a little overpriced but the quality is worth it. We always order the assorted sashimi and some rolls and this was the first place that had our top 4 favorites. There's always a few we don't care for but not here. 15 pc sashimi tuna, white tuna, yellow tail and salmon. They were also the thickest biggest PCs. This is a hidden gem. Must try! read more

I came all the way from NY and was craving sushi and ended up finding this cute spot. I had a great time eating here and it felt like home. The interior was uniquely designed and the environment was very clean. The music wasn't too loud and I was able to converse with my family while enjoying the food. I kind of went crazy with the order because I was hungry so I ordered the Julia roll, Rose deluxe, smoked Salmon deluxe and a bunch of different nigiris. Not only were they all very savory and flavorful, but the presentation of the rolls made it more appetizing. Anyways, I'm grateful for all the hard-working employees there for being open during the pandemic and serving very politely, despite busy delivery orders. Will be coming back again! read more

I ordered a beef teriyaki bento box, but received the pictured which is not a beef teriyaki. It looks like Korean bulgogi, but the beef and veggies were shredded into small pieces and put over rice directly. The salad and miso soup that were suppose to come with it was not packed in. The California roll was warm and it's rice was way too sticky. I also ordered a tempura udon, but aside from it having udon noddle and two shrimp tempuras, the broth did not taste anything like udon. It's a local restaurant and the grubhub reviews were good so I gave it a try expectantly, unfortunately, I don't expect to return. read more

I didn't take photos because it smelled SO good I couldn't wait to eat it. We ordered: Chicken Teriyaki GOOD VALUE AND DELICIOUS Lychee Ramune: I never tried this flavor of Ramune before and it was really light and refreshing Poke bowl with tuna: comes with salad pieces, carrot, shredded beet? Cucumber, edamame and the crispy pieces. It comes with avocado but I got mine on the side. The tuna tastes fresh and I'm pretty picky about my fish. Shrimp Shumai: 5 pieces of lightly fried shrimpy goodness Wajo Deluxe Roll: I didnt eat this one personally but the person who said thought it was amazing. Overall amazing experience. They are open until midnight with excellent quality and value. It looks to be a family run business which I love to support. Wajo Sushi has gained a new customer for life. read more
