I'm so happy with my results! I haven't done a Japanese straightening in about 10+ years. I finally got fed up with my hair this year, especially with the lifestyle I live and I just don't have time to do my hair in the morning. I went to a different salon a month before and they did not give me the results I needed all the salons for a Japanese straightening are a little too far away for me and luckily, I found Kozo Hair Salon! Kozo (the owner) was the one doing my hair and his wife also does Japanese straightening as well. They both are so sweet and they mean business! My hair type is thick and coarse and it's like 3c type (mixed black hair). Kozo did tell me that because of my hair type he wasn't sure if it would get super straight but during the process, when I saw the product sit in my hair, I knew it was going to be good! The process came with a free trim. Coming in to getting this treatment done I knew there was gonna be damaged at the end so I didn't mind a trip plus I wanted to start fresh for my hair growth journey! The treatment was $400 and it took about five hours. I think it's totally worth it because now it cuts a lot of time out from getting ready in the morning and makes my hair more manageable! I've been going to Kozo for 10+ years and every time they don't disappoint! I have had both Kozo and Kimie as hair stylists and both are so good at what they do. Every time I request for the type of hair that I want, they exceed expectations and I trust them to do whatever to my hair. Also, for a women's haircut (and wash of course), it's only $70, which I think is such a great price, especially in this area. Their hair salon itself is so nice and clean. Kozo is hands down the best! He is so talented with his cuts. I usually get my extensions done with my extension stylist and come to Kozo for hair cut and the PERFECT blend. Kozo has a special technique that makes your hair shape flow, easy to maintain and style. I am usually really lazy in styling my hair as a busy MOM but I drive an hour to Irvine for kozo's cuts as they make my life easier cuz it's so easy to style quickly. he also dry cuts which is true skills. Most Talented stylists usually all dry cut cuz then that's the exact shape your going to get before any styling is needed. A big plus is his price is super super reasonable $60 ( I can tell you his cuts are comparable to some "celebrity Beverly Hills stylist I've been during my extensions journey who charge $200 and up). Kaoru is an amazing hair stylist!! I have had many stylists in the past, but Kaoru is by far the most talented and kindest I come in with the strangest colour and cut request most times, but she will get it perfectly every time! Anything from a strawberry blonde or a peachy pink, she has never failed me in getting the perfect colour I want! Even her cuts are perfect! I like my hair short, but my stylists in the past had cut it in a way where it was always too boyish. Kaoru is very talented in cutting short women's hair, so she can preserve the feminine look even when the cut is extremely short. I'd definitely recommend her if you're looking to get a short cut! They also make sure you are comfortable during any procedure. During bleaching and even shampooing, Kaoru will ask to let her know if anything hurts or if the temperature of the water is too hot or cold. They even serve drinks like tea during long procedures The conversations I have with Kaoru are always so memorable too Kaoru recently cut and coloured my hair couple days before my Seijinshiki, Japanese coming of age ceremony, and even after a few days, her cut still remained near perfect, I didn't have much styling to do! Called and made an appt for Saturday at 10am. There's designated parking right in front, otherwise good luck if you arrive during lunch since the lot gets full fast due to the popularity of Kitakata Ramen nearby. The place is clean and quiet. A professional setting where there's not much chatting or music being streamed. Kozo is a true professional who is confident and goes at his own pace, never rushed. They gave a range of price if $250 to $300 for hair strengthening . I am exceedingly disappointed with my hair cut with Kozo. In advance of the haircut, I showed Kozo a photo of the hair style I wanted and spent a few minutes explaining that, in the end, my hair had to be long enough to put in a ponytail, since I work out a lot. Midway through the haircut, Kozo clearly became uncomfortable, but I couldn't understand why. I have thick hair, and asked that he texturize it. He said that was not necessary. Rather, he kept snipping away and would have continued snipping away unless I asked that he stop one and a half hours later. In the end, I now have chin length hair that cannot conceivably be put into a ponytail and does not remotely look like the photo I showed in advance. It is not at all texturized and will grow out like a mushroom cloud. read more

I went to Kozo's to get my hair Japanese straight permed. I had wavy hair just to my mid-chest, and it cost 290 to get it all straightened. The treatment included a free trim, and also, during my appointment (which took about 3 and a half hours) I was offered complimentary tea/coffee. The salon has a relaxing atmosphere, good acoustic music playing, and kind staff. They give you two options for the straight perm, which is super straight (I chose this) or a slightly more natural looking straight (in which they don't put as much treatment on your roots so your hair has more body). My stylist Kay was very nice, and did a great job. Although this salon is a little pricy, it's worth it because an untrained staff can damage your hair with such a harsh chemical. I'm happy that I chose Kozo's (and as a plus, the strip mall it is a part of has lots of great places to eat afterwards ). read more

I called around10am, mature men answered the phone and I scheduled my appointment on same day. I shouldn't have made an appointment with the hair dresser who is easy to make an appointment. My hair dresser name was Kaori. Tall and doesn't smile woman. She didn't know how to cut the hair at all. Result was not same as the picture I showed her. She also cut my bangs shorter than I expected. Looks really funny. I asked ash brown color. It came out reddish brown. Even though I mentioned couple of times" I don't like red color." I bought box color next day and dyed myself. Dyeing myself was better than she did it to me. This was my first bad experience at Asian hair salon. I am still dissatisfied enough to leave this review. I've been getting my hair cut here for a few years now, and you simply can't get Mr. Kozo's consistently impeccable attention to detail elsewhere. He's been my hair dresser through various styles and colors and each cut has been amazing. I even get complimented by strangers at the store! I am very pleased with the results I get from Kozo Salon and specifically Yuki. I've gotten my hair straighten for several years but recently starting coming to Kozo. This was my second visit and it confirmed what I believed after my first visit... excellent results. The salon is cozy and quiet and very calming. No chaos or people yelling across stations to each other; the atmosphere is relaxing. Got my hair dyed and cut this time - she was super careful and meticulous with my hair and I love how it came out! This is not my first air wave perm...however it is my first time to try Kozo's hair styling service. I should have searched for Shinobu (She used to work for Kozo) instead of compromising and settling with Kozo. The hairstylist cut my hair too short, didn't know how to operate the perm machine, his wife who's the receptionist had to remind him how to activate the machine...He also washed my hair with cold water. Because his fingers are all taped with bandaids, during the hair styling process, he continuously pulled my hair out as my hair got stuck to his bandaids. Not only more expensive than any other Japanese salon in the neighborhood, but the quality of work and service are simply very poor. Not going back! This hair salon is highly overrated. I was really let down by all the high ratings on yelp. Lets start with the beginning, I talked to the stylist about wanting to go short with my hair and i brought in pictures of what i wanted. It seemed like she understood but she didn't speak much english. We then proceed to go an wash my hair, the stylist wanted to wash it in a sink that had someone else's hair all over it. It was gross. I also think that the scissors and comb she used on my hair was dirty but I couldn't be sure so I didn't say anything. As she started cutting I was already getting nervous, it wasn't turning out to look like the pictures that I wanted. It was too late, the damage had already been done. I don't know what she did with my hair because before I had long healthy hair, now my hair looks like its dry, frizzy, and dead. The ends of my hair looks horrible. After being disappointed with other hair cut place, I decided to try this place so I can come here after or before shopping at Mitsuwa. The inside is a little busy but functional. I got a female barber, and she and I had a nice chat while she was cutting my hair. She wanted to make sure I'd be satisfied with the end result, and showed me through mirrors how my hair looked like in various steps. The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 stars is that every time I go there, I have this one hair at front dangling. The place I used to go in Mountain View never game me that experience. I also notice my hair being somewhat roughed up compared to the Mountain View one. So I hesitantly give this place a 4-star. This place is pretty good though, and I will stick with it unless somebody introduces me a better place. Oh one more thing. Credit cards are not accepted. I went in a week and a half ago for my first ever Thermal Reconditioning/Japanese straight treatment. Shinobu was a beast! She worked carefully with a very close eye to detail the entire time. The process took about 3.5 hours (including haircut) and the results are amazing. No more effort in the morning and my hair is beautiful, sleek and shiny. I've been a regular here at Kozo since 2005. All I have to say is that it's the best of the best. Believe me when I say this. Years before I've visited other hair salons even the so "hip" "exclusive" ones. They can't match KOZO's skills. Not even near it. If you know anything about hair fashion, you should know that Asia is 10-15 years in advanced when it comes to styles, skills and techniques. Especially Japan. The way they cut and style your hair...to them is like a work of art, as if they're painting or sculpting. It's amazing to watch, well at least for me. Not some over caked up make up hairstylist who rushes everything because he/she's more worried about going to happy hour. Hair & cosmetology schooling in Japan is also different, way different compare to the U.S. cosmetology school. It's a lot more strict - you don't do it in 6-9 months and receive a certificate. It takes a lot longer than that. Well don't take my word for it. Ask KOZO and co. They'll tell you what's up. I just realized now that I talked more about this hair stuff than my love for tasty hamburgers. Right about now, you're probably thinking that I'm gay. Guess what? I came here yesterday because I needed an emergency haircut (after waiting 2 months since my last one) and my usual stylist at another salon was booked until end of week. I was actually surprised at how nicely renovated, modern and relaxing the interior of Kozo's is, as it's somewhat of a contrast to the shopping center that it sits in. Shinobu cut my hair and was extremely meticulous, courteous and accommodating to how I wanted it to look. The neck/shoulder massage she gave me was honestly better than I'm used to at the local spa. In addition to my hair being cut and textured how I wanted, the entire experience was so relaxing that I almost fell asleep multiple times. Went for a haircut with Kozo yesterday, finally I found a talented hair stylist. Ever since I moved from Silicon Valley, I have gone thru so many salon's and yet unable to find the one who can give me the looks I want which was easily attainable in the BayArea and Taipei. Kozo's approach is so meticulous and systematic. He unlike any other stylist, really took his time in reviewing the photos with the hair style I desire, and so careful with fine tuning the result. As my hair thickness kinda uneven on two sides, also kinda coarse and thick overall, it's very hard to texturize right in order to give the light feel, at the same time with a good volume look. Atmosphere- snuggly an asian styled hair salon that sits roughly six persons for the stylist and three seated sinks. Service- KOZO (the owner) He is one of the best hair stylists in the area. He can figure out your style and need very quickly and get your hair cut done in LESS THAN 1 HOUR. He has great techniques and will LISTEN TO YOUR OPINION on your wants and needs. He will personally wash your hair twice with shampoo and finish it off with conditioner, and then cut it. The quality of their shampoo and conditioner are quite nice and have a refreshing smell. He does not speak much, but he is certainly approachable. Do communicate well if you want something specifically. Wish I knew about the place earlier. I've tried a lot of different places and gone to numerous Japanese stylist. I'm quite pleased with my encounter. Ability was the first Japanese salon that I went to 10 yrs ago when I moved here. However, it's always hard to get an appointment and the stylist are a little snobby and that's a big turn off. Then I've been to Aruka's and a couple of discrete ones in Rowland heights. I've been to this salon's plaza numerous times but was never aware of a salon due to its tint. The staffs are friendly and so was the stylist, Shinobu. She was friendly and attentive to the kind of style I wanted.
