I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet! I've been going to Arukas and seeing Asako for around 10 years. She is such a professional and takes great care with my hair. I've done haircuts, balayage, highlights, full color, etc. with her over the years and always leave happy with the results. I make appointments and never have to wait to get in the chair because she doesn't doublebook. When she left for Japan last year, I haven't been able to find a good stylist and my hair was a mess. This was my first time coming here, and I have never had a haircut experience like this before, in the best way! I had an appointment with Asako, who is the owner, and she is very kind and extremely talented. I had the most relaxing scalp and shoulder massage, and she uses aromatherapy which makes the experience that much better. She also has different choices of tea, an iPad, blanket and pillow so that you feel really comfortable. I had to cut my bangs a bit shorter because I had damaged the ends, and so she cut them into curtain bangs. She was incredibly sweet to even show me how to best style them, and recommended how to avoid damaging my hair. She really went above and beyond. You can tell that she really loves what she does. I can't say enough good things about Asako and this salon. I went in wanting a digital perm. She took her time to show me the different photos of wavy hair to get an idea of what I wanted. She was attentive and very professional and kind. She washed my hair, cut my hair, gave me tips on how to trim my bangs and then gave me the digital perm. Also gave me a head and shoulder massage. Idk what happened but I noticed recently I had hair like David Bowie in Labyrinth. For maybe the last 10 years I've been getting my hair cut by Asako - the top stylist 1-2x per year with deep conditioning treatment. Over the years it was getting better with massage. The last time was with hot stone. But what I didn't realize or notice was that as time went on, she just kept cutting my hair shorter and shorter until I had a rats tail. To be fair, I used to straighten my hair every day bc I thought it was ok. I'm also over 40 and I've had a child. So my hair is probably naturally thinning anyway. I called in October to make an appointment and was told that Asako is now retired and the deep conditioning treatment is more expensive. I asked what the difference is and Rei told me its just different. I couldn't get an appointment until about a month later. The vibe here is not warm and fuzzy and to be candid it never really was - I always felt the stress in the air. It's hard for me bc I'm pretty loyal and of course want to support my people but dude my hair is ruined. I had to cut my hair short which I haven't done in over 15 years. I've always been clear that I wanted to keep the length. I'm not sure what happened here but I feel disrespected. I always tipped 20%+ which is at least $40 for a hair cut and deep conditioning. I've been going here for about a year mostly every 3-5 months and I LOVEEE how Konami does my hair every time! She is very caring and the amount of effort she puts & detail is amazing!! I scheduled a hair cut appointment at Arukas Hair Resort for the first time in early 2023. I don't get my hair cut often, maybe once a year, because I like to let it grow out (until its length starts bothering me). I previously frequented another salon, but decided to try Arukas because of the positive reviews and the fact that it was closer to me. I recall feeling very welcomed when I first stepped foot into the salon - my coat was hung up and water was offered to me immediately. The stylist was very thorough and offered me professional recommendations on how I can achieve the type of hair cut I was looking for - It turned out amazing, of course! While the previous salon I went to was nice, I greatly appreciated Aruka because I value the fact that each stylist's attention remains focused on the client they have an appointment with. Since then, Arukas Hair Resort has been the only salon I've been to last and this year (this afternoon, actually). Rei was my stylist for these appointments, and I've never been happier with the results. First time coming to Arukas and it was a pleasant experience I've ever had. Konami san was my hairdresser and I'm so thankful because she did such an amazing work, even though the style I chose was a complicated one (Korean men hair - mixed middle/side part but short in the back, a little like mullet but not much undercut on the side, front bang is about eyes level). The vibe was chill and very relaxing. I really love the scent of the jasmine oil that Konami used to massage my scalp before the hair wash, it was so comfortable that I almost fell asleep (^^;) Their schedule is a bit busy, turn around time about 2 weeks, so make sure you book your appointment in advance. I've been looking for a place that is able to cut and style Asian male hair and I think I've finally found my spot. Yosuke was my hair stylist and he was very helpful and friendly. He explained everything in the process and was very skilled at what he does. The session started off with a shampoo/conditioner, followed by a cut, and ended with another rinse and styling. What I appreciated were the small details such as the hair cape that had arm holes so my hands were free to do whatever if needed. During the shampoo, my eyes were covered with a small cloth. Giving Arukas a 5-star for the great service and treatment that Asako provided today. I had a lot of damage from an air perm from another salon. She applied the toner for me because my hair was so brassy from the damage and it looks so healthy again. The toner application came with a complimentary treatment - best scalp and head massage. I've already decided that I'll be going back for the deep treatment next month. The great service part is that Asako is very booked up but she came in an hour early at 7 to work on me. I really appreciate her doing this on a Sunday morning. I hadn't been here since Covid but had seen Suzuki and Asako over the years from their original locations in Tustin and then, next to Mitsuwa. While much further, this location is a huge step up from the Mitsuwa location which felt so crammed. This one is all about comfort - love the little touches like IPads, the warm blanket during the treatment, and the heating pad during my blowout. Aruka went downhill without Suzuki. Parking is a hassle on weekends. You can also park at Tokyo Central and walk over, but it's not very convenient. There is no longer a luxury feeling since they moved to this location. It feels more like a local neighborhood hairdresser's place. I had a few appointments here after Suzuki left. It's one disappointment after another. They allow me to choose Suzuki on their appointment app and make me think that Suzuki still works here, but when I enter the place, they inform me that Suzuki has left and will no longer return. The hairdressers are rookies. Some have only a handful of experience, like they just graduated from hairdressing school. They even double-booked my appointment. The hairdresser washed my partner's hair and left him there while working on another customer's head. Then he cut my partner's hair halfway before moving on to the other customer's head. If you are short-staffed, you should not double-book appointments. Don't be greedy. Now my partner's side hairline looks zigzagged, a bad haircut that would never have happened at Aruka, I thought. I can even shave better than those amateurs during the lockdowns. The entire head looks like an unequally peeled potato, with shafted lines on one side and uneven shears. What angers me even more is that my partner tipped them generously, and they accepted it without acknowledging what they had done to his head. What a bummer! read more

This review is long overdue. I have been coming to Arukas since it was in Tustin (over 12 years ago). Asako is amazing and always makes sure her clients take care of. I appreciate the teamwork that is involved in the experience. The associates work together to help get everything done and make sure you are catered to. Parking was a breeze for me and I love that this location is so close to Tokyo Central (so I can get grocery shopping done during my trip. I wouldn't trust anyone else with my hair. I have gotten balayage coloring and a haircut by Asako around 04/2021 and I loved it!!! Now that it has been almost a year (in a few months), I thought it was time for a color refresh and a lighter color and Asako is now one of the only people I trust to do good balayage. When you walk in, you simply hear politeness and Japanese all over. Asako greeted me and I showed her what I wanted and she simply knew. My hair had to be bleached and she kept asking multiple times if I was doing okay which I appreciated. During the wash, she gave me such a good head massage, I almost fell asleep! After applying final colors, she curled my hair and made it very pretty. What blew my mind was my whole appointment took about 2 hours, but it looked like she spent even longer! She is a true professional! She was also very detailed with the aftercare. I paid around $250 total. The whole salon is kept very neat and tidy with COVID times and they are only taking appointments only through their website. They do accept credit cards and cash as well. They are located in a tiny strip mall, but they have plenty of reserved parking for their clients. When my hair grows out, will definitely return!! (: read more

Rei was my stylist. Normally I show pics and the stylist does their best and I've been to every spectrum of stylist in LA and the OC. But I was so impressed at the careful eye and technique of Rei because they really paid attention to what I wanted and asked me questions on my thoughts on different parts of the style I wanted. I felt so well taken care of and I really will only book with Rei moving forward because of how well it looked. What I also appreciated was how they told me how I can upkeep it and get the shape I wanted and product I can use. My hair is also very difficult to work with because it's bleached, colored, thick texture, etc. but they really tackled it with so much care and consideration. I just took a shower and did what Rei told me and for once I feel confident it looks like how I want it. It's even layered so that I can get the shape I want and it looks so flattering to my face. It pains me a little to write this but I hope management reads it and makes improvements. I started going here since August as I work nearby and it is convenient to get a haircut on my drive home. Appointments are made easily by calling in and for $40 the price is competitive. The first time I went, I got my haircut by a cool girl with a stylish hairdo. When I was leaving, I asked for her name so I can book her again but she said she was transferring to their Dallas store. The second time I went, I got my haircut by a cool guy who did an excellent job. He cut it and styled it in a unique way that stood out. One month later, I got my haircut by him a 2nd time but this time he didn't cut it the same way despite me showing pictures of the hair style I wanted. As matter of fact, he cut the side of my head so poorly that I had to go back a few days later and ask him to clean things up. One thing to note is, during my 1st visit with him, the store was not busy and he was able to solely focus on my hair. The 2nd visit, the place was packed and he was attending to another customer at the same time he was with me. He would cut the other customers hair and while that customer was getting their hair washed, he would come and cut mine. I have a feeling he cut my hair poorly due to the fact that he was busy running back and forth between two customers. Soon after, I learned that this place rotates their hair stylists every couple of months. Seems like they have new and young hair stylists come from Japan to work and "train" at this location. Then, after their time is up, they either go back to Japan or to another location. If you think about it, it's a bit of a disservice for customers since this rotation of staff means you will have no consistency when it comes to the stylists. Each time you come, it will most likely be cut by someone different. The last time I went was in Nov and I made an appt with a new guy for 6pm. I walk in and the place seems severely understaffed and my guy doesn't sit me down until 6:40pm (40 min wait). Just like my last visit, the new stylist is cutting someone else's hair during my appt time. He has his assistant wash my hair (slowly, so that he has enough time to finish up the other person's hair). Felt like everything was in slow motion which made me wanna take a nap. The assistant has a look on her face like she really doesn't want to be there, which further makes the atmosphere monotonous. The new guy finally starts cutting my hair as the other customer he was tending to walks out. I feel like he is rushing through it, and before I know it, a new customer walks in and sits down near me waiting for my stylist to tend to him. Knowing that my stylist is in a rush and needs to finish up with me makes it uncomfortable to ask for any adjustments on my hair. Because of this, I go home trusting that the stylist did a good job only to find my wife pointing out that the sides aren't even and the back of my hair (neckline) is unbalanced. By now, I am over it and don't want to return to ask for the adjustments to be made. A few things to note here. 1) Like I mentioned, it seems this store has a sales quota and stacks their reservations so the stylists are cutting two people's hairs at once in order to generate more sales. It does not give the stylist the proper time to allow them to do the best and careful job they can. 2) The store rotates its stylists; it would be much better if a few can be mainstays so a regular like me can get the same haircut each time by the same person. 3) 40 min. past appt. time is too long - spread the appointment times out more. I had such a poor experience my last time I felt this review was necessary. I will still go back to give them another chance but hopefully improvements are made. read more

I still only trust this salon with my hair after so many years. Asako-san always knows best and there's no other stylist with whom I can 100% comfortably just go "whatever you think is good". My hair was going every possible direction and curling up like an octopus, so I came in for a Japanese Straightening. Included a spa head massage, deep treatment, and a much needed trim.
