In a NUTshell, this place was neither really GOOD nor really BAD. However, I must admit, the 70s bar theme is unique! There was a waterbed in the front, a GMC van in the back, and NSFW photos on the bartops and walls, a la Casanova Lounge. Bartenders seemed pretty cool. It's small and janky and well, there are pornos playing on the tvs. It's just different and that's what makes it awesome. There's a very small dance floor that you can maybe get a few moves in, but generally people just hang out and talk about their surroundings. I can honestly say I have never been to a 70's style bar with old pornography on the walls and water beds to lounge in. Came here on a weeknight and it wasn't too busy. LOVE the theme -- lots of vinyl, fuzzy trim and nudie photos from the pre-Brazilian era. Grab a booth in the back and watch some cheesy 70's movie while using the radio to call other booths! My friends and I had never seen Repo Man, but it changed our lives. Went here last night for a bday party. A couple notes: 1) It was crowded beyond belief (think, 1130 on a saturday night). 2) This place was filled with giants. At 5'2", and wearing flats, I was eye-level with most people's waistbands. Excellent place to have a random time... in a good way Was able to get in a van/waterbed with a group of friendly strangers... you can use the CB radios to talk to other cars!!! Can't really hear each other over the music / bar noise but still cool! Overall decor is 10, though the photos of naked woman on the floor is slightly disturbing because they all have GIANT bushes! Crowd was a mix of older crowd in sweaters on awkward frisk each other dates, casual every day crowd, hipster crowd, punk crowd, stuck in the 70s crowd, and people pretending to be stuck in the 70s. I'm glad I went there while it was still pretty new. Would go back again, but wouldn't be as enthusiastic as trying to get on a water bed... I'm sure someone has taken advantage of the "shaggin wagon" by now... and if they haven't, they should! I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I went here. The drinks are very very overpriced for what they are, but I got the impression people come here for the funky ambiance. The bar tender was pretty cool. The bouncer reminded me of my boyfriends dad. Weird. This place makes me chuckle. In the bathroom someone wrote, "be a sport, fuck the barback". There are waterbeds, faux fur, hilarious porn and cartoons on every screen on all walls, disco balls, and gave off creeper van vibes because of the van pieces. So I read the reviews before I came here, and I was totally confused about the many mentions of pornography. And lo and behold, they actually play 5-10 second clips of hardcore porn on the television every minute. This was a shock for me, and my buddy, who's a pretty conservative religious guy, as I didn't want to freak him out. He seemed to be okay with it, and I thought it was more hilarious than anything else. I've also caught myself staring it when it does come on (because of the shock), and felt like people thought I was a perv. Anyways, pretty cool place, dance floor is tiny, the staff were nice, friendly, and fast. Its a very narrow bar, with dark tables in the back and a (very dirty) waterbed in the front- cant say ive ever seen that at a bar before! If you like themed-bars, this is one to check out! I highly recommend getting there early to secure a spot in one of the cozy vans, if not the water bed located at the front of the bar. You won't have to wait long to be served because they've got plenty of staff behind the bar, which is always a plus. The only annoying thing about the bar were the stools! They are in the shape of car seats, which make it a bit difficult to squeeze through to place your order at the bar - not the most efficient or practical use of space. BTW - if you are not comfortable with nudity, you may want to avoid the centerfolds plastered on the floors and counter :) No wonder there was a whole lot of sexual tension around the bar...not sure I'd use the toilet in this bar. All-in-all, fun place to experience, but nothing special about their cocktails - just a place to grab a couple of beers or a vodka tonic. read more

On the upside: cheap beer, super stiff drinks, and cheesy 70s pornos. I ordered my usual Sailor Jerry and Diet and when the bartender poured it (pretty much just rum, ice, and three splashes of soda) he topped it off with more rum and said "Have fun with that." Word. This is by far the most hilarious bar I've ever been to in SF! The decor alone will leave you amazed and entertained for hours. You could go alone or bring a friend and enjoy the shenanigans this place has to offer. From chillaxin in the waterbed, to sitting in an empty hot tub as your table, to watching the TV's "entertainment." Someone took me here as an official initiation into SF culture and I was shocked and pleased with the "anything goes" mentality! Umm... I really DID feel like I was transported back into the 70's. It's Thursday night at 10:45pm. There are 70's playboy models with their breasts out covered all over the bar. We go to the back, sit in furry van booths with screens slide showing vans. To my right was a young Ron Jeremy lookalike with a gigantic moustache and sunglasses on. Across from us in our "van" is a drunk swinger in a 70's psychadelic dress (umm... we kicked them out with our looks of horror). Our van was shooting some kind of smoke- maybe it was dry ice? I like this place. Clever concept, cool van decor and nice bartenders. Sometimes the porno intercut with the 1970's commercials on the video monitors gets a little gross, but it seems meant in a humorous way. It IS pretty funny to see people's reactions when they're focused on an old Woodsy Owl commercial and BAM they get an eyeful of something completely different. I made a prediction when they first opened that they'd have a big problem with drunk patrons damaging their van gear, but everything's held up well other than the main van's waterbed, which has been removed. Thought the drink prices were comparable to other bars on Polk St. It's not the biggest space and gets PACKED on weekends, especially the narrow space between the bar seats and the wall, which stretches back to the dance floor/group seating. The boyfriend wanted to celebrate his birthday with some friends, so we decided to venture to Polk Street...neither of us have spent a whole lot of time in this area. We found the Kozy Kar with the help of other Yelpers. Upon entering, I immediately felt like I had walked into an episode of That 70's Show. The bar tenders were friendly and the drinks were reasonable. $3 for select beers, and $5 for all well drinks. I enjoyed sitting in an RV style car while chatting with friends. The waterbeds kinda freaked me out. What happens in those dark corners? And the shag carpeting covering the bed? Ewww. Kozy Kar does porn tactfully- if that's even possible. The pin-up girls are on the floor and the bar- with just a few framed photos hanging around the joint. Couldn't get over the intermittent porn that flashed throughout clips like "School House Rock." I'll admit, it kept my attention, I kept waiting to be caught off guard. The Kozy Kar is a fun place to start your night- but I'm not sure it's a place I'd venture back to out of sheer desire to do so. It's certainly an experience though! read more

I was recommended this place from another bartender in the area. He described it as "only in San Francisco" and he wasn't wrong. This bar is definitely a one-of-a-kind, dive bar. Not really my style, but the bartender did make one of the best blueberry lemondrops I've ever had the pleasure of drinking. I bought into the hype. Knowing that Kozy Kar had the potential to be incredibly douchy, I decided to test it out on a weeknight, to avoid a mass throng of trendsters. We got there super early, around 7:30 (the bar opens at 7) so we basically had our pick of seats. But what to choose? There are upholstered seats, booths comprised of van benches, a waterbed... Obviously, we picked the waterbed. It was fun. We drank cheap beer and chilled, and, while once the crowd picked up plenty of people sort of peeped in to exclaim over the waterbed, nobody bothered us. What DID skeve us out was the fact that there's no cover on the waterbed - it's just a bare mattress. Gross. What if someone spills? Or does other waterbed-related things that make a mess? I kind of don't want to know. Kozy Kar is extremely gimmicky, but it seems like it will hold up. The service was good, the drinks were cheap. Although, since I'm a dour old lady and went at 7:30 on a weeknight, I probably didn't have an authentic Kozy Kar experience. read more
