GO HERE! I just moved to Wells and Chicago, right in between Village Cycle and Kozy's. I have had more bad experiences at Village Cycle than I care to remember, but Kozy's is great. Knowledgeable staff (well, most of them), reasonable prices, great customer service. You might catch these guys when they're swamped, but they'll always do right by you. I went into this shop with a good sized budget, ready to walk out the door with a bike. No other customers in the shop. Not one employee wanted anything to do with me. No "hello" or "may I help you". Not even a head nod or eye contact. I found, on my own, the bike I was looking for. The price was awesome, so I'll give some credit for that. Customer service here sucks. On the other hand, the mechanics are super friendly and fast. REAL fast. So I will return, but only for service needs. read more

I went to Kozy's on 219 W Erie to look for a commuter bike. It's the store I got my first bike a few years ago, so I trusted that its the best place to find my next bike. Yes, you see a lot of bikes and offers online, but do you know what you need exactly and what is a good bike? I didn't. So it was especially helpful to talk to their sales people and determine what I wanted and needed to get that I can lock on the street. Sabin was super helpful and knowledgeable. He showed me a few options, helped me try a few bikes, and eventually I got a gray-blue single speed SE Bike. Best bike for me. He also made some awesome suggestions for protection and safety, so I got the best lock ever, I know how to lock my bike properly and I got great lights for the dark hours. I am all set to ride. Disappointing and unethical service from the repair department. Charged me $16 to mess up my brakes. Let me first say that I bought my bike from Kozy and had had a positive experience at the time. A year later, I took my bike in because the brakes were squeaking very badly after I had cleaned the rims with bike cleaner. The service rep, Chris, informed me that rubbing alcohol should be used to clean the rims. Simple solution, right? Unfortunately, he told me this only after taking the bike in the back room and spending 10 minutes cleaning the rims and adjusting my brakes without asking me if I wanted these things done. I didn't mind at the time because I figured, he's the expert. I took my bike home and quickly discovered that, even with the professional cleaning/adjustment, my brakes were still squeaky. I recleaned the rims myself (with rubbing alcohol this time), which solved the problem. Then I noticed that one of the brakes was rubbing against the rim constantly, which hadn't been a problem prior to the "adjustment." I called the store and spoke to the manager, Theo. He was polite and did fully agree that the store would re-adjust my bike at no charge. Beyond that, he was unapologetic and declined to give me a refund or store credit. So basically, Kozy charged me $16 to half-heartedly clean my rims with a common household product and mess up my brake alignment. I now have to make a second visit just to restore my bike to its prior condition. If you take your bike here, ask them up front what repairs they'll be doing and how much they'll charge. read more

This was, for some time, my go-to spot for repairs and gear. Never had a complaint, and the staff seemed pretty cool. About a week or two ago, I brought my bike in with some brake and derailleur issues. The guy working the repair desk took a quick look at the chain - which I had replaced at the same shop along with the cassette toward the end of the summer 2013 - said it was fine, and recommended their mid-range tune-up to address all of the issues I'd raised. Picked up my bike the next day. The brakes were good. The derailleur issues continued. I figured it might be something that would need to work through the mechanism, so I rode it another 50-75 miles over the next week or two. The problems didn't self-resolve, and worse, a chain-skipping issue had developed. So I figured I'd bring it back in as soon as I could make the time. Now - my derailleur issues *began* when they replaced the chain and cassette. Since they hadn't managed to fix the derailleur issues with the tune-up, either, I was beginning to lose confidence in the shop. But I thought I ought to give them one more chance to try to actually fix the bike, before giving up and finding another shop. Well - then, my chain broke, stranding me on a ride about 9 miles from home. Fortunately, I was near another shop, which is handling the repairs and new parts. They will be getting my business for the foreseeable future. I no longer feel I can trust Kozy's mechanics, and I can only expect that my retail business will follow. read more

These guys have been tuning up my bikes and making repairs for 7 years now and I would not go anywhere else. Rented Electric bikes during a stay in the city. What an awesome way to see the city. The "pedal assist" feature allows you to still pedal , but effortlessly tackle inclines. It also helps you with fast starts at traffic lights. The staff was helpful and knowledgeable. We covered a lot of ground, and enjoyed every minute. Do this, you'll have a blast. read more

I bought from another Kozy's location with good results, and took said bike in to this Kozy's location for a fix today and was very impressed with the service I recieved. The manager overheard my frustration with multiple attempted fixes of the problem at other bike shops (not Kozy's) and took the task on himself. Got friendly fast service here. I tried to adjust my own brake and stripped a nut. They fixed it quickly and inexpensively ($12 ish) in less than 10 minutes from when I walked in. They identified the underlying problem which was a broken spoke. They fixed it for $23 and I had my bike back within a few hours. read more

Terrible customer service! Decided to walk over on my lunch break to see what they had in stock for handlebars. I entered the store and walked past the counter. The girl (just standing there) didn't greet me or ask if I needed help. I wandered around for a bit, looking for bars and no one approached to ask me if I might need help. I finally head back to the counter where there are now three employees. They are all three talking to one customer. So I wait. And I wait. And wait a little longer for good measure. Nothing. This review will encompass all of my visits to this Kozy's branch. I have bought multiple bikes, many accessories, clothing, etc here and have been cycling for over 10 years in Chicago (and Beijing for a year) and rode a mountain bike religiously before that during childhood and high school. All told, at 31 years old I've been biking on a regular basis for over 2/3 of that time. My first experience with this shop came when I needed new wheels for my daily driver. At Kozy's I asked what a really good set of new wheels would cost, and as I think most people are, I was blown away at what I was told: starting at about $400 for a set of decent wheels. The mechanic, who was helping me then said the price could go into the thousands, but a really nice set could be had for about $800. I told him that I could just buy a new bike for that money. He explained the value of sticking with my bike but upgrading wheels, but I wanted to talk shiny new bikes! He kept showing me bikes that were good values, but I kept up selling myself. At every turn he would point out the good about the less expensive of the two or more models I was looking at. I ended up buying what was a $1,500+ bike (on sale for hundreds off) by up selling myself into an all Ultegra set up. MY POINT THOUGH IS THAT I NEVER FELT "BUMPED" in price. I felt that the associate who was helping me appreciated that I was on a budget and just because I could buy a more expensive bike didn't mean I should. He was never pushy and everyone there was great. I had some other nice experiences while shopping for clothes and accessories, and when I totaled the bike when I was hit by a car, they did a thorough inspection and estimate and I ended up getting a brand new bike from the driver's insurance. So far, so good. But when that bike was stolen about 4 years back and I went back to purchase another bike I wanted to switch things up. This time I decided that 20 gears in a city as flat as Chicago is overkill - especially considering the cost associated with gear-sets. I inquired if I could get a similar bike to what I had (a Giant TCR-1), but with a 2 or 3 speed setup. I was even willing to talk about a custom build. But I was told that such a setup isn't manufactured and wasn't feasible to build - I don't know if the 3 speed internal hubs that are now available were available then, but ultimately that doesn't matter considering that was was presented to me as an alternative was basically a commuter road bike with cheap components. Basically I was being told that if I don't want to shell out for nice components that I should just get a less expensive bike. The other alternative was basically a single speed commuter bike. I said that I wanted a more aggressive setup more akin to what I had and that I'd even be willing to go fixed to do it. At this point I had no experience with fixies or track bikes so didn't really understand my options. I was not to learn them this day. I was told that they don't have anything in stock that fits what I am describing. I said I'd have to think about it and that I would call back in a few days to touch base. When I did I asked if he had thought of any more ideas for me as I was open to order or custom build, but the same things were suggested. I thought I might be out of luck until I stopped at another bike shop local to be from which I had purchased some accessories before and asked them. Long story short I ended up riding off on a sweet fixed gear track bike and I never looked back. I would have given Kozy's a 5 star review based on everything but this last attempt to buy a bike. I was lucky enough to have my bike stolen YET AGAIN recently which is now replaced, but this time I didn't even have the inclination to go to this store. Maybe I'll give them another shot in the future if I think of it. No I'll will is held - it's just sad that with all of the business that I'd done with them that I forgot to even contact them when I was recently desperate to get a new ride. read more

I purchased a bike from the northside Kozy a while back so this review is based entirely on their repair department. After moving southward, began taking my bike to this location for minor repairs and tune ups. I popped a tire a while back and they did a great job patching it, it never leaked again. This saved me from buying a new tire. They were fairly quick with the repair as well, about 30 minutes while I waited. They have about everything you could need for biking and they have a great selection to choose from if you do not already own one. They are honest, friendly people who are easy to work with, and they have the cutest dog that wanders around the store to keep you occupied while you wait. read more

I have to agree with Kathy P. I went to Kozy because I figured they were more personable, and let's face it, knowledgable, than some of the other larger bike chains. The woman that helped me didn't really offer me any information on any bike unless I asked very specific questions, and didn't necessarily try to sell me any bike either which I thought was odd... however, she did go through the trouble of guilting me about purchasing a GT that was about a hundred dollars less than the Cannondale I looked at first. It was my first bike since my childhood Huffy, and I wasn't looking to break the bank. Her laissez-faire way of retail was annoying at best. She forgot to include my patch kit with my accessory kit which caused me to have to wait 10 or 15 minutes while the others tried to figure out how they would include it on my already rung up receipt. I went back a week later to return a trunk mount for my bike because it scratches the paint of your car (Saris Bones) and she was completely rude and standoffish, like I personally offended her. Granted, I love my Cannondale Quick 5, but I did not enjoy my experience at Kozy. read more

This is my first Yelp post ever, but I feel strongly about my less-than-positive experience at Kozys. 1) I just returned from my THIRD trip to the store for a very simple purchase and adjustment. Total about 6 hours of wait for maybe 40 minutes of service/labor. Very disappointing. 2) Part of the problem, there are TOO FEW people on the sales floor. On a weekend I've seen 1-2 sales people which is not much compared to the volume. I don't blame the sales people much, it's a management issue, but it should change because people get neglected and frustrated. 2a) There is one sales person who I think might be the main guy but I'll avoid names. He over promises, gets distracted, keeps customers waiting and shifts blame on others. Just today I saw him make someone wait 30 minutes, then they talked intermittently for another 30 and AT THE END of 1+ hours, the sales guy realizes that the bike the customer is referring to is different from the one he's been talking about! I saw this because I also was waiting. 3) For a simple commuter bike maybe it's a good choice. But anything more technical I would steer clear. One several occasions I was given conflicting advice and then when I pointed it out, I just got excuses and putting the blame on others. (oh it must have moved when you rode it or, if you had spoken with me you wouldn't have heard that...well it was you with whom I spoke). 4) Service is SLOPPY. I had handlebars installed and then kept coming out crooked. Each time I requested an adjustment, they said "ok do you mind waiting 20 minutes". 1- they shouldn't have been crooked in the first place 2- it's an adjustment I could do in 2 minutes! I don't like being critical but it upsets me that so many customers put up with this everyday. Probably why it's worth a premium at some other shops. read more

I bought my bike 2 summers ago at this location instead of the Halsted location which was 2 blocks from my apartment at the time because when I called to speak to a sales rep, he treated me like a moron when we started talking about what kind of bike I would want. He told me the bike I would want ran $500+. I then looked on their website and saw that it was more like $250 so I went out of my to this location rather than walk 2 blocks to the Halsted store. My sales person was very nice and when I showed him the bike I was looking at, he pointed it out to me and then showed me the newer model which was more expensive which I did end up buying. When I went back to pick up my bike, I took in the computer I had bought at the Halsted store that I couldn't quite figure out how to program. I saw a different sales person that time and he was somewhat of a jerk and was no help so I sought out the person who sold me my bike and he helped me. Strange that I got 2 grumpy employees in 2 different stores. You get a free fall tune-up from them when you buy your bike there which I definitely took advantage of. read more

When they called to say it's ready to be delivered, they actually asked what time of day is good for me! Who does that anymore? Recently purchased a bike from Kozys on Des Plaines. During the sales process I was continually put off by the attitude and cockiness of Brian, one of the salesmen. Nevertheless I continued and bought the bike. When I returned a week later to pick it up I was told that the discounts promised by Brian wasn't correct and couldn't be honored. As I wanted the bike and the difference in price was only $30 I decided to take it anyway. But, I will never ever visit or recommend Kozys again. read more

Bummer. I want to like this bike shop-- but this is the second time this summer i've taken it for minor maintenance and had problems. The first time was a tune up before a long ride-- got the bike back making the same exact unpleasant sounds it made before the tune up. This time i had the chain replaced and in the process they made my brakes sound awful and handed the bike back that way. I can fix that, of course, but it is annoying to be handed a bike that sounds like shit. Too bad Kozy. read more

Just got back from this Kozy's and had to write this review immediately. I needed a crank arm and also needed it installed. Called them and they said no problem. Came in and the mechanic took a quick look at my bike and came back with their most affordable crank arm. Didn't try to up-sell me on some BS crank arm I didn't need. He wrote me up, gave me a ticket, and got to work. I was able to pay while he was putting the crank arm on. I was in and out in 20 minutes. I wanted to hug every damn worker that was in there. My bike is my main source of transportation, so whenever something goes wrong with it I expect the worst. This Kozy's made it the process completely painless and affordable. read more

I went in SPECIFICALLY looking for a 25.4 bullhorn handlebar. I asked SPECIFICALLY for a 25.4 bullhorn handlebar from the staff working the workshop in back. I was pointed to bullhorns and ASSUMED they were pointing to the bars I SPECIFICALLY asked for. I get home to install the bar on a vintage stem which is kind of rusted, and damage the handlebar sold to me. I was perplexed as to why the bar didn't fit. Turns out I was sold a 26 diameter handlebar. Now I know a 26 bar can fit a modern 25.4 clamp. But given the condition of my vintage clamp, that wasn't what I was looking for. Now I'm stuck buying a new quill stem which is gonna be another 35$ as well as some bar tape or bullhorn rubber grips to cover the cosmetic damage so another $20. Seriously, ASSUMING the 26 will work for everyone's 25.4 is an ASSUMPTION that's going to cost me APRX. 45$ to 55$. Hell, even the guy who rang me up said, "Don't damage it if it doesn't fit so you can return it" which was considerate but it took some jimmying to get the old bars OUT but since they were the CORRECT SIZE it was okay. I'm now HAPPY GO LUCKY jimmying the bars in because I thought I had the CORRECT size I ASKED for resulting in damage. Would really appreciate it if I was directed to the CORRECT merchandise I ASKED for instead of something that can work in MOST cases. So now I have some cosmetically damaged bars I have to keep, my vintage bike project is taking a turn my wallet isn't planned to handle because I'm moving soon, and I gotta double check the specs every time I put my money down at a bike shop. Just got my bike back from service at Kozy, and I am now a fan of this store for life. Incredibly courteous staff, full of knowledge and experience. The technician was able to identify some ongoing issues with my bike that my normal repair shop hadn't. I can't believe how smooth it rides now. I will no longer have my bikes tuned up anywhere else. Plus, I thought the prices were really affordable. I walked out with a pannier back rack bag I had seen at other stores for $100 only $60 at Kozy. Pretty impressive pricing for River North. My rear rim was wobbling a little side to side. I thought I needed to have it trued at a cost of $20. Brian put it on his machine and tightened a couple of spokes. He did this no charge. I ended up buying a couple of new tires instead-great price same as on the internet! Great service, honest, what else can you ask for?! read more

These guys totally saved me today! It was -5 degrees outside with the wind, and I got a flat back tire on my older electric bike, UGH! I cannot do my job without my bike. I was about 6 blocks away so I walked my bike to the shop. I was directed to the repair area by a friendly lady when I entered. The guy at the repair area immediately started to work on my bike, which is a little more work than normal due to internal hub gears and disk brakes on the wheel. While I waited, I asked another employee (Luis?) about electric bikes. Boy did he have a lot of information! He mentioned several brands and models that are carried by Kozy's and benefits for each one. He mentioned how many of them are now on sale to make room for the new models. And he mentioned that their other two locations have some in stock and ready for test drives. It's good to know, as my bike is falling apart and I don't feel that it's worth enough to spend money replacing whatever decides to break this month. I got my bike back and everything was great! The price was very good for the new inner tube and labor. I would definitely recommend Kozy's to anyone needing repairs, parts, a new bike, and accessories. I was pretty frustrated at the store. I found a bike that I was interested in and was told to talk to a specific sales person. I asked the cashier and he said that he was around the store, not much help. I eventually found the guy, but he was busy with another customer. It wasn't until another 10 minutes until I found someone available. He was very nice, but so disorganized. He was trying to talk to 3 other customers and talk on the phone. He told me he would be right back and I waited about 15 to 20 minutes and left since the meter was running out. So I put one hour into the meter and had planned on spending $1K+ on a road bike and got about 5 minutes of their time. Poor customer service seems common with my experience at Kozy's. I had gone to another Kozy's and I told him that I wanted to compare their bikes with one from Village Cycle. He told me at my price point all the brands are essentially the same. He wasn't even interested in selling me a bike. read more

I purchased two Electra bicycles from Kozy's, $500 each. Their service was very good. My Electra bicycle has run fine however my wife's bicycle has continued to be a problem. I have taken it back several times and they have made several adjustments on the rear wheel however it continues to skip when she peddles. I really don't feel that a $500 3-speed should be giving me such a headache. If you are looking at purchasing a ladies Electra 3-speed, you might want to reconsider. I still give Kozy's four stars as they are always very helpful and you can't fault them for the bicycle's performance. read more

I bought my first BMC bike this year and Sabin at 219 W Erie made sure I was fitted for it perfectly!!! I never had such awesome customer service!! I didn't feel pressured to buy anything. If anything, I was given great advice about how to put on and take off my wet suit when I'm in transition in my triathlon. I learned how to make sure my tires had the proper air pressure. I was shown proper ways to clean my bike and was educated on how great body glide is! It felt great as a female athlete to go in a store like this and not feel intimidated. I bought everything I needed from Sabin at Kozy's and I feel very confident that I will have fun, do great and be safe at my first Triathlon this weekend! Thank you again Sabin! read more

Charlie in the service department kept at it for multiple visits, working on the issues and ensuring the difficult problems were completely resolved.
