My tube finally gave out, as did the tire a few days ago. Sucked as I was really looking forward to taking a long ride on the lake front. Walked it to the first place to pop up on my Yelp Ap. (Notice the name drop, Elite '13 Plz!) Really glad this place came up within walking distance. Carried my bike in, and was told to take it to the back. Had a new tire and tube on in under 20 min for less than $30. Maybe I could have paid $20 somewhere else, but I didn't care as I was taken care of so quickly. In fact I could have been out 5 minutes quicker if I could of been check out more quickly. Appeared to have tons of equipment in the store, and I noticed someone who had sent a custom part there for delivery. So it sounds like they have it all? read more

This shop so consistently saves my bacon. I'm perpetually wandering in with a basic emergency repair on my way home from work in the Loop and they get be right back rolling again, with no fuss, no mansplaining (the techs in the shop were female last time I was there) and with kind words, even though repair is often not a profit driver for stores like these. Last time, I was here with a flat and my 6yo on our way to ice skating and they took good care of us and were friendly to her as well. If you're in the Loop, need snacks, want to look at new wheels or need bike gear, this is a great shop to do that, and if you need a repair, they'll be happy to help with that too. read more

Two big reasons they only get a 3 star: 1.) they've been my go to bike repair shop for years and every time they did a fine job. So thumbs up. 2.) big time thumbs down- I went to get a tire repaired and after they fixed it that day it leaked out. So I called immediately and when I took the bike back in they said it wasn't their fault and wouldn't repair it and wouldn't refund me. I didn't even hit a bump that day so I know it wasn't just from usage. Anyway they tried to charge me the full amount of $25 to repair it again. So I went to a different place to get the tire repaired and they fixed it for only $10 and it's been perfect. The place is little further away for me but the service was amazing and the services were much cheaper. So I'll be going there from now on but it's been real. read more

I am so grateful to Kozy's Cyclery! I came in to refurbish an older bicycle that was gifted to me by a friend. The shop did a great job bringing it back up to *speed* but it was still too big for me. After a lot of discussion and help from the staff, especially Syd, I was able to pick a beautiful (and better fitting!) Cannondale CAAD12. I have come in many times for small fixes and the staff is always warm and welcoming. I am also fairly new to cycling and everyone in the shop is helpful and willing to educate me on the important and cool aspects of my new CAAD12. I'm so grateful to have such a great cycle store in the city with such an awesome and reliable staff. This shop has given an old hobby back to me. Thank you Kozy's! read more

Naturally, on the one rare day when I don't bring my bike tools with my bag to work, I get a loose spoke. Nothing irritates me more than hearing the rattle of a loosening spoke as your riding down the street - well, maybe that creaking sound coming from around my bottom bracket. I decided to head over to Kozy's on my lunch break to kill 2 birds with one stone; hoping to rid my bike of a loose spoke and ready to pick up a tube of bike grease. Instead, I walked out disappointed, and well determined not to let Kozy's ever have my business again. Upon arriving to the service desk, I came to an employee fiddling with a wheel truing stand. He did not greet me, but rather looked at me until I spoke first - really great customer service. I proceeded to ask him if he would lend me a spoke wrench to tighten one loose spoke on my wheel, and he replied with a long stare followed by a simple "no". Incredulously, I asked if he was serious and his reply was a simple "yes". I get why you'd want to sell your repair service rather than give customers tools to fix their bikes themselves, but this was ONE SPOKE. It literally would have taken 3-5 seconds. Sir, you would have been helping out a fellow Chicago cyclist, AND had you helped me, you would have been making a sale as well - too bad. I've never known a bike shop to be less friendly than this one. Forget me buying grease or any other product from you or this store ever again. You've lost a customer forever. Will never be back to this store and will warn others away. Guy with buzzed hair and no beard talked down to the guy in front of me and to me, put my wheel on backward, underinflated the tires, lost my valve cap, and when he flipped my wheel around to fix it the tire is now rotating in the wrong direction. Plus, on a side note that wouldn't have been that bad on its own, I came in to get a broken spoke replaced and he couldn't be bothered to match the color of the other spokes. Went in about 45 minutes before closing looking for a replacement bike seat for the wife's new bike. No one offers to help us even though it's pretty slow, we ask if we can bring our bikes in and the tell us to put them wherever. It's As if we weren't the cool kids that would already know this. We stumble around until we finally find the seat display and ask which is the most comfortable. We are told they are all sold out of that one. No offer of the second most comfy, just a cold shoulder. They look at us like we went to a fine steakhouse and ordering a Filet well done. read more

Do not bring your bike here for a tune-up! The service level is terrible, and their prices are way too high for a basic tune-up. The two bikes I brought in had both back wheels not securely tightened when I picked them up. I had to put more air in the tires outside their own store because the tires were not inflated either. Who forgets to tighten the wheels and put air in the tires? Poor service, high prices, avoid this place. read more

I must be some sort of masochist. I keep giving Kozy's a chance and they keep kicking me in the face. My most recent experience at Kozy's involved calling and asking if they rented bikes. They replied no. I asked if they knew any bike shops that did. They asked if I had tried the internet. In-ter-net? Another time, I asked an employee a question and he informed me he doesn't sell bikes, he just fixes 'em. Then he helped the next girl who walked in the store with renewed vigor. Wow! When I finally did get some help, guy #1 asked if I had found someone to help me. When I replied "Yes," he responded "Yeah, he's helping a lot of people" and walked away. Whaaaa? Was I mistaken? Is this a business? Would you like me to purchase a bike or are they just for looksies? I also noticed that they pushed the same Cannondale on every woman who walked in the store. Coincidence? The nicest part about this shop is that it's the cheapest honest shop you can get in Chicago. They won't over sell you, and they'll try to fit you with the best bike in your price range and their tune-up program is great for the newbie. I've bought all my beater bikes here because this is where you get'em cheap. They have one of the largest selections of cycling clothes too and if you catch them on a sale... well nothing beats a Pearl Izumi woolie for only $20.00 for serious cyclists. This is especially great for women because a lot of shops don't bother carrying a large line of women anything. Tools are also super cheap here. What is normally $20-40 elsewhere is about $10-20 here. Their services are also a lot cheaper whether it's a tune-up or a wheel truing. I still prefer doing that stuff myself, but it's good for the newbie. I want to specify, this location has the best mechanic of all their locations. He's a long and hard veteran of bike mechanics and does everything perfectly. I'm skeptical of the mechanics at their other locations as they can be wet behind the ears as well as take forever for basic work. They also have the nicest dogs at this location. If you're allergic try another location. read more

Living in streeterville, I am not blessed with an abundance on bike stores in close proximity. As a result, kozys is my closest option. Given the state of the roads in Chicago as well as lakefront trail after such a horrid winter, I have gotten more flats than I can ever imagine having in my entire life combined this summer. Sure I can change a flat, but I generally just take it in to be changed. As long as you bring a tube and take the wheel off the bike, a flat is only $6 to change. That's not a bad price. I knock a star because they don't have great salesmanship. I've asked a number of times what I should do to limit the flats I get an they haven't recommended anything to me at all....hello I am asking to be sold to!!!! I generally prefer going to the bike lane right across from the congress theatre. They have better salesmanship and also are cheaper. That said, kozys is more than adequate. read more

tl;dr version: friendly and reliable service at (still) the only bike shop in River North. I've been bringing my battered Fuji here for 3 years and they always greet me like a friend, teach me something about my bike and never charge me too much (though I wish I knew enough about the mechanics of bikes to know exactly what River North premium I'm paying). A decent and well-curated selection of parts, clothes and accessories; but mostly just good mechanics and good bikes. I have also seen these guys be just as warm and helpful to a clueless tourist on a rental bike, a person all in spandex with a carbon fiber bike, a hip guy on a fixie... I bought my new favorite toy here at Kozy's Cyclery. My cotton candy pink beach cruiser has been a dream come true. It was moderately priced and the service was excellent, considering they were able to help me, service the bike and get me out the door for a weekend ride in less than 1 hour... Not to mention, they let me ride her around for about 30 minutes to decide on the purchase. What an afternoon... The tense vibe coming off this store's employees makes it hard to ignore rumors that the owner rules his business with an iron fist. At the register, the sales person is very adamant that you provide your name and phone number "for their system." A better reason couldn't be provided. He was rather insistant and I had to decline repeatedly. I might understand this practice when buying a bicycle that is chock-full of liability and future maintenance needs, but my purchase was a kit under five dollars! Not recommended. They are fine with bike service and have a good product inventory but their prices are insane and the customer service is rude and flippant. They offer no guarantees/warrantees on service and have the most expensive flat tire repair rate I've seen in Chicagoland. I've been to other Kozy's locations over the years, but this is my first time actually dealing with this location in particular. I came in here earlier this week because my bike had been locked up in storage for over a year and was in dire need of air in the tires, and possibly other things. I brought it in assuming they'd try to sell me the tune-up, but the service guy simply took it back, filled air in the tires, and gave me a quick assessment as to the state of the bike. Turns out there was some work that "could" be done (brakes were wearing down, back wheel needed to be trued, etc.) but nothing pressing before my Bike The Drive tomorrow. So, I walked out of there without spending any money. I like this. I will use that money I saved to buy my next bike from them. Or any gear/accessories I may need in the future. I found their advice about bikes and gears really helpful, especially since they didn't push for up selling their own products but really cared about what would be better for me. Bought my Jamis Aurora here because they have a large selection and had it in stock. The people who work at the River North store seemed like really nice people and the bike was priced about $50 less than at another store I had been looking at. Overall with the new purchase I get two free tuneups and unlimited adjustments in the first year. read more

This is my LBS for when I am at work. I love Bryan the mechanic here. When I need something (a tube, a chain, etc...) i tell him what I need, and it magically appears in his hand. I've stopped in here a bunch of times with weird bike complaints - 3 speed won't shift ($5 to fix, and they showed me how to fix next time myself); loose bottom bracket (no charge)... they also have pumps in the store for free air. Their prices are a wee bit high on stuff, but that is my ONLY complaint for my cheap self. And that is ONLY for parts. Repairs are not expensive at all. Be good to your mechanic. If you are, they will totally be there for you when you need them. read more

I was in the Kozy store yesterday looking at new bicycles. I had some interesting experiences as I started working with Kody, who then became busy and I started working with Theo after that. Theo chided me on not wearing my helmet on the test rides, although Kody had asked to hold onto my helmet & bag while I did the test rides. Perhaps there should be a standard policy - wear your helmet or don't berate the customer? Then, after I thought I'd decided on the bike I wanted, I found out that the price Theo had told me wasn't accurate. I asked that they honor both my active transit discount and the lower price and was told that that wouldn't be possible. It was then a bit frustrating to go online that night and find a) the store had a coupon explaining the discount, and b) the bike cheaper at another store! I find it interesting that the staff were not aware of the coupon discount. read more

I'm a new biker as well and just purchased my first bike from craigslist. I wanted to get my bike tuned up, have my kick stand replaced and pick out a lock. So, I brought my bike in and they took a minute and look at it and told me nothing really had to be done and I just had to pay for my kick stand..which was $14. (the usual price) Andrew (an employee) helped me pick out a lock. He was very helpful and narrowed my choices. He didn't hard sale me anything, which I found very comfortable. He even showed me how to lock my bike. Then, Bryan (the mechanic) took the time and taught me how the gears worked and how I should use it. Which was useful indeed. He even adjusted my seat and taught me the physics behind pedaling. I will definitely be back. read more

Took my tubular tire to get mounted onto a carbon rim on Wednesday. I was told the process was going to take between 48-72 hours. After three days I received a call saying that the wheel will not be ready until the next day (Sunday). The next day I got another call saying it will not be ready until the next day (Monday). That happened again and again until today. I just couldn't wait any longer so I just went to pick up my wheel (a full week later). I was not given any explanation as to why it took so long. I stood around the service area and nobody was helpful. I had to go and find another employee who could go back into the service area and let them know I was there. They couldn't find my ticket, but that's a whole other issue that I do not want to get in to... I talked to the manager and he seemed like a nice enough guy. He did say sorry about the inconvenience, but I think more could have been done. So I finally have my wheel. The tire has TONS of glue all over it. I know glue sometimes can get onto portions of the tire, but this looks ridiculous. Even my coworker saw it and said, "Is it supposed to look like that??" Needless to say, I will not be going back and will never recommend the company to any of my friends. read more

Long, embarrassing, chaotic story short: Pat the Saintly Bike Mechanic (as he shall henceforth be known) basically saved my life last week. It was my first day off work in weeks, so I decided to go for a nice, long bike ride...and neglected to bring my wallet or any emergency cash. Naturally, it was during this particular outing that my tire popped. 10+ miles from home, cashless, exhausted, annoyed... I looked up the nearest bike shop and it was Kozy's. Pat the Saintly Bike Mechanic switched out my inner tube, took down my information, and let me return the next day to pay. I was so relieved that A) my bike was fixed so quickly B) every single staff member I interacted with was so approachable and relaxed and C) Pat didn't make me feel like a huge tool for essentially requesting free service. The next day, as I was heading back to Kozy's to pay, I got another flat. In the exact same section of the lake shore path. I'm not kidding. (A brief aside to beachside day drinkers: STOP THROWING YOUR FREAKING BOTTLES ONTO THE PATH.) Pat, being so saintly and all, replaced yet another innertube and only charged me once for labor. He also gave me a new mount for my rear light (it was hanging by a thread) free of charge and suggested that I invest in Kevlar tires, since I seem to have pissed off the tire gods and all. I didn't have money for the tires, but was glad to know I had other options. During both of my visits, I felt welcome in the store. Every employee I encountered was friendly, approachable, and laid back. None of this arrogant, condescending crap I have encountered at other bike shops. So that, fellow Yelpers, is the true story of how Kozy's saved my life without embarrassing the shit out of me. Job well done. read more

I had an unfortunate incident yesterday, wherein one my pedals just popped right off my bike and plunked into the river. Unfortunately, pedals are a little bit helpful when it comes to biking, so I looked up the nearest bike shop and it was these folks. I arrived just before they closed and they were kind enough to set me up with a new (to me) pedal from their used parts pile and stay a little past closing time... and then they didn't even charge me for it! I went to Kozy's after reading a few reviews about how helpful they were to newbies. I am a newbie, and they were great with me - Mark is the person who helped me with everything. I went to their website first and picked out about 4 bikes in the price range I was looking (~$230) and asked Mark to recommend one. He talked about each bike and asked how I would use it and narrowed it down to one for me. He then helped me with accessories (I wanted a basket to make the bike more functional) and my options, and was not pushy at all. They put on a basket, bike lock, and replaced the wheel quick-release for free. The maintenance person talked me through everything, from my bike lock to the quick release to helping me put on my helmet! Overall, I thought everyone was very helpful and the maintenance plan great. read more

I rolled in to get a flat tire fixed. The staff greeted me at the door, which was nice. However, they said it'd be $30 to fix a flat. I find that to be rather overpriced for this city, so I rolled back out and up the street to J.C. Lind where I paid $18 (and that was including a nice quality Schwalbe tube.) Edited 7/29- The owner sent me a very nice message and let me know that the price I was quoted was not reflective of what they actually charge. I appreciate the outreach and am bumping up my review to 4 stars. read more

I'm a fan of this bike shop. I have a friend that lives across the street. And I was early to his place, and decided to stop in to peek around. This place is massive. The staff was nice and let me take a couple of bikes out for a spin, despite the fact that they knew I wasn't going to buy anything. I ended up buying a new bike chain because of it. (I did need a new one anyways). I think some of their merchandise is a bit over priced, but their bikes are a decent deal. If you are looking for a bike, great. If you are looking for gear, get it online. It's always cheaper there. The service is great. And the mechanics know what's up. It's also nice to be able to walk around and drool without feeling overly harassed. read more

I walked in to buy a bike last week. The sales staff was helpful and knew what to recommend without too many questions. It was much less expensive than Johnny Sprockets, but the service was too slow to merit any recommendation. I paid for a kickstand and waited an hour and a half to have it installed, only to find out (after I got home), that they had forgotten to include it. Instead, they put on the bike lock and sent me on my way. They fixed the error for no charge and were friendly about it afterward. Even with the installation hiccup, you'd be hard up to find a bike shop as nice as this one anywhere else in Lakeview. read more

KOZY's has been good by me. One of the few shops that stocks a lot of high end road, MTB and Tri bikes all the way to entry level hybrids, single speeds and commuters for every type of enthusiast. 4 stores in Chicago means they probably have what you want and can take care of your needs. Most of the staff ride, race or have been in the industry long enough to give qualified advice and professional repair. If they sell $10,000 bikes you better believe someone there assembled them and knows what they are doing. Stephen Y, I have a few problems with your review and wanted to be fair. First, you should know how to change your own tire and tube. If you believe your Langster to be all that you make her out to be you should know how to wrench on every aspect of her, saving yourself that hard earned cash and keeping your chest hairs aligned with the satisfaction in knowing you wrenched on your baby yourself. A pinch flat can also happen when you hit one of Chicago's many pot holes, rail tracks, gaps, cracks and are not paying attention to things like tire pressure, which I myself check before every ride, but hey I clean my chain daily too. A seasoned cyclist is one that knows the trade, wrenches and races. It appears from your comments you fall into none of these categories, I mean, you ride a Langster, a Langster... A single speed bike which requires almost no skill set to build or maintain, is not suitable for road racing, unseen in track (with its brakes) and is too upscale for messenger work. The Langster can be bad ass. But a Langster is a cyclists 3rd bike in their stable. Kozy's uses Specialized tubes, the same brand that makes your Langster. Take that with a grain of salt. Don't get me wrong, one of my favorite brands as my S-WORKS Venge will attest... You act like the mechanics set the price of labor and parts. Dealer cost on Specialized tubes isn't even $3 in bulk after shipping. Kozy's sells 3 tubes for $16. It's a 2 way street. You could have come into the shop and asked for a tube, asked if you could use some tools to change it and probably made a few friends in the process while talking about your bike. Kozy's is one of the few shops that lets you test ride that $10,000 bike and lets you use their tools when you really are in a pinch and need to save a few bucks, but you wouldn't know because like changing your own tube, you didn't go that route. Great bike store! I'm not much of a biker, but run errands for my boyfriend who puts 200+ miles on his bike each week for a race he's training for. I've stopped in a few times with a box or list and a confused face, and all the employees have been extremely helpful. They always have what I need, and have great service to boot. For example - I stopped in with boyfriend's broken shoe clip looking for screws, and in a completely non-schemey way they let me know that the clips needed to be replaced. Then, they had the replacement AND put them on the shoes for me. I highly recommend Kozy's. And when/if I get a new bike, my first stop will be at Kozy's. read more
