I like to ride my bike. Not sure how good I am, I don't wear spandex with logos all over. I just like to ride. That being said, I felt comfortable at Kozy's, even though I'm not an expert cyclist. I had to pick up a lock and light. The guy who helped me (Cody, I believe)was super personable and didn't try to oversell me at all. Came in here recently to tune up 2 bikes that we have in preparation for summer. The staff was very friendly and courteous. They did a quick check on the bike, made great recommendations and we left our bikes with them. The turn around was also pretty quick - 24 hours. I work in River North and I commute from Logan Square. Apparently my commute is riddled with tacks and spikes and pieces of glass and plastic, all of which LOVE to embed themselves into my tires on a regular basis. Since this place is so close to my work, I'm here pretty regularly (mostly because I'm lazy and changing an innertube is a huge pain). The staff have always been super friendly and really really approachable. The girl at the front counter is really sweet and didn't make me feel stupid at all for not knowing what psi my tires should be at. She actually explained to me what the perfect pressure was for my tires. The guys in the back are really friendly too, and work as fast as they possibly can. I can imagine in the summertime it gets chaotic back there with everyone and their mother coming in for adjustments. Sometimes there's a bottle neck, but I think of it this way - it would take me just as long to do it, and I'd probably raise my bloodpressure by about 10 points. This way, I'm relaxed, I spend a few bucks more, but it's money I don't mind spending. read more

I originally went to the Kozy's on Webster, but they didn't have the bike that I wanted in my size, this one in River North did. So I bought the bike through George at the Lincoln Park store and picked it up at the river north location- he (George) was awesome ~ I give him 5 stars. He talked with me about what I was looking for, what I may need, what I didn't need. All my dumb, "I've never been a bike commuter, but now I am questions" he answered perfectly, made me feel really comfortable. I had previously been to the Kozy's in River North (it's only 2 blocks from where I work) and really wasn't impressed with their front-of-store staff. Luis in particular could have been alot more helpful - If I have questions I wanted them answered - not for you to point me towards the most expensive bike and then walk away... Brian at the River North store is the complete opposite - he is one of the guys manning the repair shop in the back - totally awesome, once again 5 stars. Would say 3.5 I bought a bike here for a pretty good price cuz it's a 2010 model year (WHEN did they start putting model years on bikes? I always thought a bike was a bike. but then again i am a road racing noob) That said, I bought it on a triathalon weekend and all the pros were coming in to get their bikes tuned for the last minute tweak. They were busy. Understandably I did have to wait a moment to pick up my bike. When I got my bike, the dude was like trying to rush me along. I could tell normally he's pretty chill but i could see he was stressed. I said I'd take delivery and try it out. Little did I know after riding around a bit, I totally had a loose handlebar and almost got in a crash. This was bad. Then I walked the bike back and told them WTF!? and they fixed it. and my sales person apologized and then proceeded to give me a fitting. They stayed open late for me. This was good. Since my regular bike repair shop recently closed (Running Away), I was looking for a place in that would really do a great job tuning up my 2014 Trek Domane 5.2. I was really spoiled by Running Away who clean/bathed the bike and who were meticulous in finding things that would degrade performance or safety. I also needed Kozy to fix my Burley that I purchased there in 2012. It had trouble opening correctly. Well, they fixed it for free Anyway, back to the Domane. The real test was how it rode and how clean it was when I picked it up. It looked like brand new. Plus it rode like new. Awesome. I purchased a three year discounted package as well. Really, really happy with my choice. I purchase the mid priced tune up for $110. read more

I can only speak for my own experiences, but I've always gotten excellent service here. I've purchased a bike here, and they were helpful in selecting one in my price range. Then they were helpful when I had to buy a seat to replace the one stolen when a friend of mine didn't lock it up the way I'd showed him when he borrowed it. You would not believe the stress I put myself under trying to decide on a new bike. I won't bore you with the details but I spent an exceptional amount of time doing research and bouncing back and forth between models. I FINALLY decided on the Giant Rapid and Kozy was the only place in town and a few places in the burbs that actually had one left in stock. So I called them up, spoke to Zack and he hooked me up right quick and was pretty friendly and seemed to know what he was talking about. I was pretty sure at that point that I knew I wanted the Rapid, so he took a small deposit over the phone to hold the bike for me and let me know the bike would be ready for me in under two hours (it was still boxed and needed assembled). Rock on. I get to the shop and the bike was ready to go as promised. Spoke to another cool guy working at the front counter (sorry, can't remember your name cool guy) but he asked me a lot of questions about how long I've been riding, living in Chicago, etc which I thought was nice. He seemed genuinely interested in my riding experience in Chicago and stuff. He was pretty helpful picking out accessories and I got the pin locks for my wheels so I didn't have to bother with a cable lock. I didn't tell them I wanted that in advance but it was no problem. Sent the bike back to have the new lock system put on and the U-lock mounted and it was ready in about 10 minutes. Awesome! Good experience overall. Honestly I've heard negative things about the employee knowledge on bikes so I was a little nervous. I'm used to the guys at some other shops that are on their A game all the time and I rely on them to keep steer me in the right direction. But since I was pretty comfortable with the bike I wanted I went for it and I'm glad I did. Kozy has some great policies. 30 days to ride the bike and bring it back or exchange if you aren't happy. You also get two free tune-ups over two years as long as it's during the off season. Bonus! read more

Overall, Kozy's has been good to me. I got a new bike there, had issues, and Kozy was very supportive in helping. Most recently, a cab driver hit me and messed up my bike pretty badly. I have to especially say that Lief (repair person), went above and beyond to help me get it back in shape. He called manufactures of various parts to check warranties of things that weren't even related to the cab vs. pedestrian accent, and ended up making my bike just like it was new. The customer service from him was fantastic (and coming out of the South, has been missing pretty badly in Chicago!!!) I mention him by name because for the most part, the rest of the repair staff has been fairly average in being helpful. Kozy has a competitor up the street that will perform simple repairs, but after my experience here with Lief, I will only take my bike to Kozy and have him do the repair. read more

I cannot say enough good things about ALL Kozy's locations. I'm new to the city and new to biking in a city, and these guys were great. They didn't push me on the most expensive bike (because I clearly didn't know what I was looking for), and every employee is so friendly and helpful! I ended up buying a bike at the Halsted location, testing an upgrade at the Erie location, and buying the new one at the Desplanes location. Every location was wonderful to deal with. The only reason I returned the Work 1 model of my bike for the Work 2 was because I test rode the Work 2 and loved having more than 7 gears. Kozys is definitely the place to go though. I bought a bike at Kozy's last July. So far I've been very pleased with the bike itself as well as the service. First off, it was a Specialized Hard Rock 29er for $500, which is a phenomenal deal for that bike new. Second, the bike came with 2 free tune ups, as well as free adjustments for a year. I'm not sure if other bike shops offer that, but I feel like it's a great perk. Their prices are a bit higher than what you'd find elsewhere in terms of service and parts, but what do you expect? good for repairs. they offer some used parts which saves you cash. I've had my bike fixed twice here (broken handlebars and a cracked hub), they were very nice and reasonable. Plus you can eat at Hooters across the street if the repair is going to take time. That's a nice perk. I have to add that the mechanics seem to get things wrong quite frequently. misdiagnosing the cause of a problem, or the part needed. It's happened to me 3 times which is excessive. so you might want to read up on bike repair if you frequent this joint. Last time I called looking for a part, they didnt seem to know what I was talking about. called village cycle and they said we have it come on in. Best place to bring your bicycle for repairs in River North. While I consider myself handy, I'm by no means a bicycle technician/mechanic. Regardless, I tackled the task of building two bikes in one week. Other than following the instruction manual, I had no idea what I was doing with the first bike. After going to "Get A Grip" on Fulton and being quoted an asinine price to check the bike out, I rolled a few blocks to Kozy's where they fully inspected the bike and fixed the front brake (I had definitely screwed it up when putting the front wheel on) and back tire. While I feel they may have taken advantage of me with the back tire (it was a brand new bicycle, never been ridden), they inspected/fixed everything that needed to be and filled the air in my tires for under $50. I also bought a tire pump from their shop that was about $10 less than online prices (I checked). A few days later, I brought the 2nd bicycle that I built into the shop. Granted I had a better handle on what I was doing this time around, and had already filled the tires w/ air, but I still wanted to get it checked out by the professionals at Kozy's. They checked the bike out and adjusted the front brake FREE OF CHARGE. I couldn't be happier. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and the bicycle accessories and services are reasonably priced. They have a ton of bicycles in the store, too, but they seemed a little pricey (I didn't compare online though, sorry can't help you there). read more

This Kozy's is a mere two blocks from my place o work, so I became a customer largely out of convenience. Every time I've visited -- often when I'm in a pinch: "Need a travel-size Presta pump with gauge because I'm paranoid I'm going to get a flat!" "Need new black socks because I'm pretty sure the dryer ate all of mine!" "Help! I was playing wrench last night and need a new part!" "Do you have any pretty saddle bags?"-- the staff has been hella friendly, knowledgeable, prompt and -- for an uneducated but aspiring bike geek like me, this is a big 'un -- non judgmental. So, FOR EXAMPLE (uuh, this is pure hypothetical) if you were to wheel your bike into the store some weekday afternoon because last night, after a hearty serving of Merlot, you were getting greasy and tinkered with your back brake too much and now something is effed up but you're scared to do any additional tinkering because this is your brake system after all and you don't want to die on your bike unless you have to (i.e. dueling with cabbies) and as such, you want a professional to check it out -- they would, indeed, do that "checking out" you requested quickly (while you waited) and not charge you anything for the mild adjustment that was required -- and on top of that, teach you what you need to do if you put yourself in that situation again! Brillig all around. Only downside -- and this is something you've got to deal with in just about any city bike shoppe -- is that most of the merch/accessories and bikes (from the browsing I've done, although I've never purchased a ride here) are a bit above what you pay out in the 'burbs or internet land. The convenience factor, however, of this location and its proximity to downtown, the el, the drive, etc., makes up for it in large part. And the one time I was overcharged for something (they charged me about $5 more for a tyre as compared to the price it was marked), I brought back my receipt and was promptly refunded the money. I've been going to all the Kozy's branches for ten years now. Right before going there for the first time I was dead set on buying a Trek mountain bike and didn't like Specialized because of one I had in high school. Kozy's doesn't carry Trek, and to my chagrin they showed me the Specialized's equivalent. While I took it for a spin I fell in love with Specialized. Sometimes I just walk in to browse and drool over the Specialized S-Works road and mountain bikes. They taught me at Kozy's to not select bikes by brand, and a manager even gave me information about a couple bikes they don't carry. They've never tried to oversell me and help me make a choice based on the price range and how I would use the bike. A couple of times they even recommended bikes cheaper than what I originally planned on buying. I had to take a star off because they don't carry all brands, like most bike stores. Also because the second bike I bought from them didn't have a pedal attached right and it wore out the threads so I had to replace the whole crankarm. read more

I must have come in on a bad day before, so forget all about what I said above. OK, I admit it, the reason I came back was because I had a 50% off coupon from Bike the Drive, and who passes up a deal like that? I needed a new lock and wanted something I could be confident with, but wasn't really sure what the best ones were. It was busier in the store than when I was here before, and I saw that every customer was being helped. I didn't even get all the way over to the locks display before a salesperson approached me. Instead of just pointing me in the right direction, he gave recommendations and explained why some products were better than others. I mean, he spent a good amount of time talking to me! He even gave tips on how and where to lock the bike to minimize the chances of theft. The locking system I chose required some installation, so he walked me to the back for that. I returned to the front of the store and paid, then looked around a little bit. I went to the back to ask how soon they would work on my bike, and they were already done. We all have an off day once in a while. This is a top-notch bike shop. Don't let me tell you differently. read more

Went in Friday early evening and while two employees were helping one customer shop for a bike, I couldn't get anyone to help me. Came back the next day, was helped, but the salesman walked off in the middle of assisting me because someone was interested in a more expensive bike (they are on commission). Salesman seemed more interested in up-selling me than helping me find the best bike for me. Ended up putting a deposit down on a bike but the two parts I checked were inferior to those manufacturer says it comes with when I went to pick it up, so I bailed. Could be a fluke, but I would check your components against what the internet says the bike comes with before taking delivery on a bike from here. I would recommend Village Cycle, where I ended up buying instead, for better selection and more helpful salespeople. They're not on commission and seemed more willing to help instead of just trying to close as quickly as possible on most expensive bike possible. read more

For both bike repairs and triathlon needs, these guys are fantastic. Each time I went in, I was helped right away. The repair service was fast and friendly. I will always go back to them for any repair in the future. The staff are very knowledgeable and were really nice about answering all of my triathlon-related questions- and I definitely had a bunch. Despite my obvious beginner status, they went above and beyond to help me find what I needed and get me all set up. They were patient the whole time and actually set me up on my bike (after installing my cleats for me) and taught me how to clip in and out. After wasting my time and money at Performance Bike shop (in another city) where I was sold the completely wrong type of shoes for what I was looking for, I can honestly say that Kozy's is easily your one-stop shop for all biking needs. As an added bonus, Kozy's was even super nice and accommodating about a return I needed to make because of the fact that Performance Bike sold me mountain bike shoes instead of road shoes. read more

Kozy is the best! Great staff all around. Everyone in there is willing to help or answer any question you may have. If you are looking to buy a new bike, definitely buy from them. Ask for PJ. He's awesome and knows everything about every bike out there. He is also really honest and will not try and sell you something that you do not need. Also HIGHLY recommend buying the service plan with any new bike you purchase. It's only $100 and covers pretty much everything you need to keep your bike in working order. Anytime something is wrong with my bike, i take it up there and they fix it right away and the service plan covers everything so i pay nothing. Most of the time, it's about $20 on average that i would pay them for random adjustments/fixes i would pay if i didn't have the service plan. I don't normally write reviews, but I had such a bad experience that I felt the need to warn others of this place. I am new to cycling and ride an indoor bike frequently. I got my first pair of cycling shoes and went into the shop to make sure they fit properly and to purchase a pair of cleats. It was a Tuesday night and there were maybe two other people in the store. When I asked Bryan to help me see if they fit, he asked me how the shoes felt. He didn't ask me to sit down--rather, I changed shoes at the front of the store while other people checked out. It was humiliating. He couldn't even take the time to ask me to sit. In addition, he asked me if I owned a screwdriver and to install the cleats myself. I returned the cleats a few days later and explained these events to two employees in the store. Amazingly, one pretended that he couldn't hear me, and the other gave the typical line, "I'm sorry you had that experience." No offer to install, no discount, nothing. The only reason why I would return to this place would be to determine the type of bikes/shoes/etc. in stock, and order elsewhere (or cheaper on Amazon!) read more

I'm an avid cyclist and have been going to Kozy's for nearly five years. When I first moved to Chicago from Napa Valley, I was worried that the bike shops here would not compare to what I was used to in California --- knowledged, efficient, quality bikes & accessories. My worries were eased by the customer service. Recently, the inner tube on my rear wheel popped while I was on the trainer, and I didn't have an extra tube for replacement. I quickly went to Kozy's (Erie St.) and within 10 minutes, my tire was fixed, got 2 additional inner tubes all for $24. I wouldn't consider going anywhere else! I've been in twice, not for a bicycle reason, but because I was having problems with our stroller. Once the tires just needed to be pumped with air which they did at no charge. This involved taking wheels off the stroller. Went in because we got a flat tire, they fixed it right away and it only clot a few dollars. All the staff super friendly and helpful. Popped my rear tire when I hit a pot-hole trying to go around a clueless truck driver riding on Dearborn near Ohio on my way home from work at 1:00ish pm. Needless to say, I was pissed off. Found these guys on the internet and walked my bike over there. A guy in the shop changed the tube for $22 total in ten minutes and I was on my way. Great, friendly, fast service. I don't know if that was expensive or not- just started riding again recently- and honestly wouldn't care if it was with how nice and fast the service was. read more

BOTTOM LINE: Don't go to Kozy's if you have an appreciation for the value of your money. They don't see you as person. They see you as an opportunity to make as much money as possible through exploitation of desperation and not knowing any better. --------------------------- Many of these four and five star reviews of this particular Kozy's seem to be coming from (self-admittedly) inexperienced riders. Allow me to weigh in with the experience of seasoned cyclist. I'm not putting my opinions over anyone else's, I merely get the impression that I have some more experience with what to expect from a bike shop than some of the people who rate this store well. I'm decades from being their oldest customer but I would like to think my father, my friends and my friends' fathers have taught me something about bikes. I don't know exactly when Kozy's decided to formally make the switch from trusted, beloved Chicago establishment to money-grubbing price gougers but as far as I'm concerned it was Sunday April 28th 2013. For it was Sunday, April 28th 2013 that I had the misfortune to get a flat while riding along Michigan Avenue to the lake path. I made the decision to go to Kozy's rather than Village despite the comparable walking distance because I thought I knew the work at Kozy's to be quick and professional. I got to the store and handed over my bike, a Specialized Langster, to the mechanic, telling him that I was in need of a new inner tube. He took my bike and told me it would be out in five minutes or so. He then handed me a bill for $24. Twenty four American dollars. To fix a flat? I thought for sure he was kidding. Just for reference, a new 700c presta inner tube such as the one I was receiving or can cost as little as three dollars. That means that Kozy's and their mechanic deemed their work worthy of at least fifteen dollars of my hard earned dinero. I beg to differ. Having not ridden the wheel I took to Kozy's in several weeks after the fact I was dismayed to find that the tire had become flat again and was no longer holding pressure. Why? It's hardly a stretch to think that this, the most expensive of tubes, surely should have been the zenith of quality as well. I removed to the tube to find a pinch flat. For those not in the know, a pinch flat is caused when a mechanic punctures the tube of the tire by pinching it between the rim of the wheel and what ever tool is being used to remove the tire. An honest to god newbie mistake. A shop as established as Kozy's SHOULD attract a caliber of mechanic to whom the very thought of a pinch flat is unthinkable. But no. My real problem with Kozy's isn't that their labor is overpriced or that the new tube went flat. For I have no problem with a well-fed mechanic and the puncture was a really slow bleed since I got home without noticing it. My problem with this store is their attitude towards me, the customer. Maybe the labor was so expensive because the staff found my garish gold wheels offensive. Or maybe there's a larger issue here. Is it mending a flat tire, not selling bikes, that is the basic currency with which the store interacts with the cycling population, the root note of the tune to which they do business. For most, it is an urgent occasion because many people don't know how to fix a flat and that's perfectly fine. But beyond that, it is an easy way to demonstrate to customers who they are as a business, an opportunity for an empathetic interaction between people who love to bike. Instead, Kozy's chooses to take as much money as possible from people in dire need and people who don't know any better. It's a predatory practice and a shameful way to treat other people. read more

I had my back wheel changed, and the brake doesn't work any longer after they installed it. I didn't notice it until some time later, went back asking them to adjust it. They refused to do it for free and insist charging $16. What should I say - I'm so glad that I didn't have both wheels changed, otherwise I either have to brake with my shoes or be surprised by a bill $32 higher than the quote! Worst conduct ever to break something while fixing things to create more revenue! read more

NEWBIES BEWARE!!!!!! Unless you are a professional cyclist and know what you want, then DO NOT GO HERE. THEY WILL RIP YOU OFF! I am a cycling newbie and bought my first 'grown-up" bike from them four years ago when I lived in Chicago, which I thought was a great bike at the time, but I didn't ride it all that much because it just seemed difficult to do so and I blamed it on me not being in good enough shape. Fast forward to now, I am back living in NYC and have brought the bike to THREE shops who all have said the same things to me!!! "The bike (frame) is NOT the right size for you. It's a small/medium women's and you're closer to a large. Didn't they fit you?" My first response has been, "fit me? What does that mean?" Basically, Kozy RIPPED ME OFF AND ARE INCREDIBLY UNPROFESSIONAL. You sold me a bike based on me liking the color of it, not because it (physically) fit me or was going to be the best choice for what I needed it for. Plus, YOU NEVER FIT ME FOR THE BIKE - didn't check the seat saddle height - nothing!!!! You all are terrible and I truly hope that NEW riders read this and stay clear of your shop. The gentleman who helped me was well over six fit tall, had glasses and shaggy hair passed his shoulders. Again, NEWBIES BEWARE! Mr. Kozy you ripped me off and I intend to contact the Chicago BBB about you and your practices as I have plenty of professional cycle store owners in NYC who will all provide written documentation that what you sold me, you should NOT have. One of my friends were with me when I purchased the bike and will also provide a written statement that I bought the bike and walked right out of the store with it - meaning NO FITTING was ever performed. read more

The staff was extremely helpful in helping me find the bike that fit my exact needs, introduced me to a ton of opportunities to get involved in the Chicago cycling scene, and seemed genuinely eager to make sure I was satisfied with the purchase. I've been here twice in the past couple weeks and I have vowed never to return. Both times I went with the intention of once and for all outfitting my new-to-me bike with all the accessories it needs (fenders, a rack, a basket, a pump, lights,) and both times I was turned away by very unhelpful repairmen. Perhaps it's my fault for expecting to get some un-urgent service done during the first few nice days of spring, or perhaps for expecting that the repairmen would take as much care with my new-to-me bike as I do. In any case, I did expect to be treated with some respect--I was, after all, planning on spending quite a bit of money there. But by their dismissive attitude, it seems they didn't want my money, so I'll take my business elsewhere in the future. The first time I went there they denied me the free tune-up that the bike had on it since it was purchased originally from Kozy's. The free tune-ups, apparently, are only good from October through February, and the second week in March doesn't count, even if I bought the bike from someone on Craigslist and didn't know the rules. I left discouraged, and without any of the things that I came for. The second time I went there to get a rack and fenders installed (a simple install that I now plan to do myself), the repairman told me I couldn't expect to get any of the things I wanted done in any reasonable amount of time. And, when I asked if they had any extra brackets for my old rack so I could put it on myself, he said they didn't, and that no one ever needs any extra brackets because they come with the racks when you buy them. When I went to Rapid Transit on North Ave. with the same inquiry, they pulled out two full drawers of brackets for me to look through, and only charged $1 in the tip jar for the one I chose. Long story short: if you want help with your bike, don't go here. Their accessories are also quite expensive. read more
