Great New Orleans style restaurant that we have visited three times. My girlfriend is from there and she loves it as well. The food is great, and authentic in a real New Orleans way, rather than in a Minnesota knockoff kind of way. Only complaints are that the place is much too noisy to be able to talk or hear without shouting and the beignets have varied in quality from wonderful the first time we were there to terrible the last time. read more

I've had this place bookmarked for a year, since the NY Times write-up. This was the first time we've had time to try it & I was so excited. I was moving my son into SJU and we made time to have a last lunch together here. Since it's Sunday, it was the brunch menu. After a very long & challenging trip from Denver, I really wanted a cold beer. I asked if the beers listed on the brunch menu were the only options. They had 2 sours/gose, 2 cream ales, a stout, a brown ale, double IPA and a lager. Kind of a strange selection. I didn't want a double IPA at 1:30 pm as I still had to drive back to the airport. I'm not a lager fan, and I don't care for sours, cream ales or stouts. So that was disappointing. I was also surprised there were no options from the brewery across the street (I've been there, it's good). The hostess wasn't sure, so I asked the waitress who said yes, that's it. So I reluctantly ordered the lager. I was telling my son how this place was written up in the NY Times and we opened the regular menu to look at it. Their website listed several bottles & cans of beer that were not on the brunch menu. And I had ASKED. I went inside & showed the waitress the online menu & asked if I could have a bottled pale ale. She said she'd ask. Seriously? I did get the bottle of beer, which hit the spot. But what a hassle. And then we ordered meals. I asked about 3 items that looked good, and told the waitress I did not eat pork but ate chicken & seafood. She recommended a chicken sandwich but it was deep fried. I decided to order the jambalaya since this place is known for the creole food. I told her no ham or sausage. The menu said they could make that item vegan or vegetarian, so I didn't feel badly asking to hold the pork, and was looking forward to shrimp & chicken jambalaya. When we got our meals, my jambalaya was simply rice, the jambalaya sauce, and 3 shrimp. No chicken. So I asked the waitress and she said they were out of chicken. Hmmm. Ok then. I ate the shrimp, they were good but tomato rice alone is boring so I left hungry and am now looking for another place to have lunch. My son ordered a burger and said it was good. The restaurant did not charge me for my jambalaya. But I'm pretty bummed with the overall experience. I like to support small & local businesses and this place gets great reviews. I am a big fan of St. Joseph, MN, so on the one hand I am happy that there is an eclectic location such as this as an option for people. Having said that, I am not a fan of the restaurant and we had a very disappointing experience. The food was overpriced and very, very average. The Ribeye was overcooked and was not served as described on the menu. I'm sure people will comment that I should have said something, but we had waited for quite a while for the steak and it wasn't horrible, just $58.00 for a steak that was at least 30% fat, overcooked, and served without the sauce as indicated on the menu. I commented to the server that the red beans and rice (which were not bad) were a little too salty. Her comment almost made me laugh. She said that a lot of people have commented on that, but that is how the chef likes it. Well....if a lot of people have commented on that, doesn't that tell you something. The coffee was really good, for what it's worth, and the bread they served at the beginning of the meal was delicious. I wish we could have gotten more of that rather than the cornbread, which was average. The last straw for me was when I asked for extra honey butter. We got a small little cup extra, but were charge $1.50 for it. That really sealed the deal for me. One last thing, do something about the music. From where we were sitting, all we could here was a droning of the bass and nothing else. It set my teeth on edge. read more

An unexpected dining experience based solely on geographical location. Nestled in a sleepy little college town my friends and I had a great dining experience. Service was very friendly and attentive, the food was solid, and the drinks were the star of the show. The drink list is beyond crafty, full of ingredients that this seasoned boozer had difficulty discerning. But, who cares??!!! Those concoctions will knock your socks off. Every drink was balanced, nuanced, and clever. The first thing that came to the table were three little button size buns of decadence. They were a miniature version of a dinner role with honey butter. I seriously can't even explain how amazing they were without my eyes rolling into the back of my head. The raw and broiled oysters were a perfect start along with the crispy brussel sprouts. The sprouts were charred and had a little kick of spice with a touch of acid. The beet salad was small and sparse but I liked the addition of the crunchy puffed rice. The crab cakes were a little mushy, but not unpleasant, especially doused in lemon and a killer remoulade. The etouffee was surprisingly light in style and had a beautiful consistency but was kinda stingy on the crawfish....I love those little mud bugs and they were out numbered by the trinity (onion, celery, pepper) by 100 to 1. We had an expertly prepared med rare flat iron steak accompanied by a salty green piri piri. The only let down was the gumbo. It was essentially the etouffee but they added chicken, sausage, and ham. It lacked that super deep dark roux that I've known as a labor of love and pride to the cajun/creole cuisine of Louisiana. We finished the meal with a cozy, sweet, crunchy and soft pecan bread pudding. It had a french toast with super powers type quality. Amazing food! I went here for the first time not knowing what to expect. But it was absolutely fantastic and I loved everything. The bbq shrimp was so good and the flavors perfect and complex. There are very few restaurants that can match the incredible taste of their cuisine with the warm and inviting atmosphere. My husband and I had an amazing dining experience at Krewe. We dined on the patio and it was a beautiful night. Our fabulous server walked us through the whole menu with her expertise on excellent recommendations, we tried almost the entire menu, everything was phenomenal. You can taste the soul/heart/love in each item and even the cocktails were delightful. Erin and Mateo have put their heart into Krewe and not only does it show but you can taste their passion. Flavour and experience wise it's top notch, love the new orleans vibe and music. Only downside is the price of some of the items on the menu is not justifiable. Ordered the catfish, the flavour was amazing, but honestly expected more for an $18 dish, it was only a small fillet of catfish, not even rice or potatoes. I mean come on, I spent $18 but I'm not even full, how expensive is it to add a potato or a cup of rice? Even the beignets was super small, for 4$ I'm only get 3 tiny pieces. read more

The restaurant is very neat, it has a cool vibe. Food was pretty good but quite salty. The gumbo wasn't a very big portion for $17, but the pork chop was huge and quite good, except a tab salty again. However, we were greeted by the Expeditor/Manager (not sure of her actual role/title) who was not friendly at all. She 100% has a personal belief masks are the greatest thing ever. You can say it once (if you feel you're required to) but chasing a man into the restroom is a bit extreme! The food is delicious, such great flavors. I especially loved the heirloom salad. I came to done alone for lunch and never was asked if I'd like a beverage. The neighboring tables seemed to have servers but I never saw mine again until I asked if I had one. He said that "the bar manages the tables". Sometimes singles get treated with less attention, so maybe it was just that. I'd been waiting to come here for over a year so I was a bit disappointed with the experience, especially with the menu prices reflecting that there would be better service, like someone explaining dishes etc. Still, I'd recommend it, particularly w a friend and a cocktail. read more

Lilly was a Wonderful charming server. She was very cheery, and informed us that most of our choices were some of the favorites. When they arrived we could not argue. 4 Friends shares 3 appetizer's and 4 entrées. It was a Taste Sensation! We shared the bread pudding and again, Wonderful. I'll go through our experience start to finish: decor and atmosphere - excellent. Service - excellent. Cocktails - excellent. They have a special martini and a special tequila that are outstanding. The small, fresh complimentary buns they bring to the table? OUTSTANDING. The strawberry-lemonade-lavender lemonade is excellent (non-alcoholic). The hush puppies are excellent. The red beans & rice are excellent. The half chicken is EXCELLENT. The Prime Rib is the best I've ever had. What's not excellent or outstanding about this place? Not a single thing. This place will be the crown jewel in the ever expanding St. Joseph downtown. Do yourself a favor and go. And then tell every local friend you know to go too. Super friendly greeting both from front of house and server ... open kitchen smells terrific we ordered BBQ shrimp, Grandpa's Gumbo and the Flat Iron steak. We were warned plates are shared experiences and come up as prepared ... First up Gumbo... a nice balance very flavorful without needless dominance of spice. I like spice so that is not the issue but often in a quest for authenticity chefs feel the need to over power to make a statement... not here... Gumbo allows and celebrate the combination. The BBQ shrimp is very good again not over spiced. One tip is don't add the lemon to the dish it detracted from the combo. You have to shell the shrimp which is not hard after the first one... the Steak was a bit under medium and perhaps a touch salty but we like it that way... the Piri-piri. sause is a new to us blend of green chilies with herbs ... while it was good I could not help but dip the steak in the BBQ sauce from the shrimp perhaps sacrilege but yummy. This place was worth the trip from the city ... I wish it was closer to us but we'll be back! read more

I took my mom here for her birthday last night. She is a New Orleans native and LOVED the food. Said it truly tasted like home. We drove an hour and a half from Saint Paul to try Krewe -it was WELL worth the drive. Their collard greens are some of the best greens I've ever had -and this is coming from someone who has spent a lot of her life in the south! I would also definitely recommend the shrimp po'boy! It was the perfect Louisiana touch to serve it with Zapps voodoo chips. Delish! We will have to make the trip to come back soon. This place is very attractive and spotlessly clean with a beautiful open kitchen. 5 star service. It has a bit of a quirky service concept, served in family style one course at a time. If you don't want to share courses or want individual meals served simultaneously this isn't your place. I personally was fine with that and enjoy this style. I wish I could've given this 5 stars. I've lived in the south and love Cajun & creole cooking, especially in New Orleans. The only critique I had was I think they over Minesotaed it (I know I just made Minnesota a verb). Not just the heat level but I thought the overall Cajun/Creole herbs and spices were just too tame. Just didn't have the deep complex flavors I was remembering. I usually wait a day before posting a bad review to make sure I feel the same way, and I do. As others have said, it's very noisy, so we sat outside which was nice. We had also noted in other reviews that the portions are small and asked about that. Our server emphasized one would have to be very hungry to eat a shared plate on one's own. Not true. Our server did a good job explaining the menu, the beet salad and shrimp bisque was excellent, then it went off the rails. She offered us dessert next, apparently forgetting we had ordered an entree. I suspect she forgot to place our order as we waited another 30 minutes for it. As she had suggested, we ordered a shared plate of jambalaya. It was NOT enough for two people. There were 4 shrimp, the sausage was chopped, instead of nice slices of andouille, no identifiable vegetables like okra or tomatoes, they appeared puréed. It comes with a very small scoop (maybe a quarter cup, if that) of rice. We winter in Louisiana and the Florida panhandle, so we know what Cajun food should be like. We never order dessert after a restaurant meal, but went right to Jupiter Moon for ice cream after, because our meal had been so disappointing. read more
