Read the great reviews about Gary so we took our preschooler for her third cut. But very uncomfortable with the experience. He shuffled out of the back and plopped down at the register never acknowledging her or us even though we were the only customers there. We went over to get his attention, he put her in a chair in front of some crazy scary bug cartoon with giant scary bugs attacking little cute scared ones and started combing her hair roughly -- with barely a hi to her. She was intimidated and stone quiet -- which she never is -- and also freaked out by what was on the screen. Message to salon that supposedly specializes in children: not all 3.5 year olds are used to being deluged with scary sounds and imagery, you might just be showing them that sort of thing for the first time. Be more careful about what you're blasting at loud volume for heaven's sake. I finally said it was pretty terrifying and could he turn it off, he spun around and did it quickly with no word of acknowledgement, back to quickly clipping her hair and ignoring her. Social graces of a...well, no social graces, actually. No social graces at all. The rest of the cut was the same, she was clearly just a head to him, gave a flat complement on how brave she but otherwise zero interaction, never any eye contact, never spoke directly to her. If you've ever seen someone who's good with kids and enjoys them, you'll recognize the difference. Mind boggling he's working at a kids specialty place, really weird actually. All said and done, quality of haircut was fine but the experience for her -- and therefore us -- was awful. Never again here. read more

I took my 10-month-old there today for the first time. I love how clean the place looked, the parking was scarce, but we went during off peak hours so not a problem. Gary was EXCELLENT with my baby, who often cries in the presence of strangers. I also have a 4-year-old son, who just recently had a haircut at our usual shop, so he didn't get one here yet. THAT will be the defining moment. If I am happy with his hair, I will have found my new haircut shop! It is definitely more convenient to drive out here, then it is to drive all the way out to Oakley (which is what I've been doing for close to 3 years now). I'm glad we gave it a shot. =) read more

My 4 year old son has gotten his haircut twice and my 2 year old son has gotten his haircut once by Kristine. I like Kristine and Gary seems nice as well. Amazing! My son is 18 months and very busy! Kristine did a wonderful job and he was entertained the entire time. She put on a movie and he was so happy! Towards the end when he got restless she had me hold him and finished up! I love his haircut!! Would HIGhLY recommend for a first time haircut! Based on other reviews, we came here for our little one's first haircut. It was great. There was a movie playing, a musical race car for him to sit in, and lots of toys to keep him occupied. I have been to over 3 places to get my little guys haircut. He's about 26 months old and he's screams the whole time! He's extremely difficult to work with. I called ahead to see if we could get an appointment at a slow time so he wouldn't bother other customers or scare kids. I also explained to Kristine how hard he is to work with. She was not phased at all and we made the last appointment of the day. The shop is super cute and kid friendly! It is very clean and has really cute cars to sit in while you get your haircut. She let my son play for a bit before she started and put on his favorite cartoon. She was very patient and kind the whole time even though my son was kicking and screaming! She did an awesome job! She even spent time trying to engage us after and let him play. I will be back. The haircuts are reasonably priced and service is great. I like the location and it's easy to park with kids as parking is right in front! I would highly recommend this place to any parents and will gladly make the drive from Danville every couple of months! I've taken my daughter here several times and I just realized I've never done a review! We moved to the east bay when my daughter was a baby and because she won't let me put anything in her hair to get her bangs out of her face, she has haircuts fairly often. Now that she's a toddler, every experience here is different. Sometimes she's fun, other times she's a wreck and refuses to get her hair cut. This place is great, there is a train table, toys, and a TV that always has cartoons on. Came here because Miss Karen, who normally cuts my daughter's hair and is just down the street, was out with a broken arm. Saw the great reviews, so we gave Kristine a shot. From the beginning, she didn't say hi and treated my daughter like an object on an assembly line. The cut she gave was just ok, and she was unfriendly and was making snide remarks under her breath. At the end, when I asked her if she had a lollipop for my daughter, she just pointed to where they were instead of showing my daughter and offering her one. Surprised she gets such positive reviews on here. I'm glad Miss Karen is back at work and will continue going there. I recommend her. Gary just recently moved to Kristine's Kuts in Lafayette from Cool Tops and we are so happy to have him closer (although he was worth the commute)! This place is great. My 3yo daughter had her first haircut here with Kristine. My then-6mo son also got a hack job (by me trying to just trim it) fixed by Kristine and that was a walk in. My son's was really great since we had photos scheduled the next day and his hair looked perfect. She is so friendly and my kids really responded well to her - it was a very positive experience for them. Plus their hair looks great! We will definitely be regulars from now on. read more

Kristine is a nice lady but I have to say that I was far from thrilled each time we came here. First hair cut for my son his gorgeous curls were lopped off, even when I asked her to leave it long but cleaned up. I was so disappointed, I thought I should have paid closer attention and went back again a few months later. Again, it was just ok and the babytalk Kristine did drove me nuts. Kristine and Gary are a dynamic duo at the newly named Kristine's Kuts at the former location of Lafayette's Cool Tops. They both give great precision bob style cuts for girls with very thick, fine hair and also super thin, fine hair. We had been going to Kristine for years in Lafayette driving from Oakland as her temperment, skill and playfulness with the girlies made it so perfect. She has been very patient with my eye for precision and perfection and achieves our collective requirements with every visit! Gary cuts hair beautifully too -- after Cool Tops in Lafayette closed we went to Gary in Rockridge's Cool Tops. The salon is comfortable for the kids and the cuts are so easy as the child picks out a movie to watch during the hair cut. Prices are reasonable. We've taken our daughter twice, once for my daughter's first haircut at 13 months and then 16 months. Kristine cut her hair both times and it was okay. The service could've been better as we were paying $18 for her haircut--which consisted of maybe 5 snips. I doubt we're going back for a third time. read more

My almost 3-year-old can be very sensitive about getting his hair cut, but Gary does an amazing job of putting him at ease, giving him an adorable hair cut, and doing it quickly! My son loves the froggy chair and enjoys the movies and train table as he is waiting. The shop also feels very clean, cheery and calm-which makes a big difference for my son. I started getting my hair cut here, too! I'm a SAHM and don't have child care for my son. It makes life so much easier that my son is happy and busy playing while I get my hair cut. We went to Kristine's Kuts for our 2.5 yr old's first haircut after some recommendations, and I am SO GLAD we did!! Our daughter had such a good experience and Kristine was so patient with her. They have a play area where kids can watch tv, play with dolls or trains while they wait. They have chair that looks like a car, that my daughter just loved and she was able to watch Elmo while she got her hair cut. Kristine talked with my husband and I while our daughter got comfortable in the chair and asked what we wanted. When I asked for bangs so that my little ones hair wouldn't always be in her face, she actually voiced her opinion and told us why it would be a bad idea since she has very wavy hair. I'm actually glad I was wrong since it means Kristine actually knows what she's talking about and she cares that my daughter looks her best. She was patient with my daughter and she took her time, doing things like spraying water on her hands and then wetting my daughters hair so that my daughter wouldn't freak out because of the cold water. All the rave reviews are true, and we will definitely be coming back and bringing so friends along with us :) read more

Gary did an amazing job on my son's hair. Not only was it a great cut, but Gary was very comfortable with kids and made my son feel at ease right away. My daughter was not scheduled for a haircut but really wanted one. Gary was really busy but took the time to put her in the chair, snip her bangs a bit and top it off with a ribbon and glitter. I had an appointment scheduled for my two boys to get haircuts. I called several times after scheduling the appointment because I realized it might be better if we could switch the cuts to the next day. I probably called 4 times and got voicemail each time. Nobody answers the phone so scheduling is extremely difficult. Since I never reached anyone at the salon, we came at our scheduled appointment time. When I arrived, the owner indicated that she had cancelled my appointment and given the time to someone else. Furthermore, the owner was not apologetic and simply felt she was justified in cancelling my appointment as she had left me a voicemail earlier. Call me old fashioned but I don't believe in doing business by leaving voicemails with no actual communication. There is no way to know that the other person has received the message (and I hadn't received her message). I have never left a negative yelp review before in my life, but I was upset enough after this mix up to take the time to do so. The owner should have offered us a free or discounted service or at least been more apologetic regarding the fact that she had cancelled my appointment without my consent. read more
