Not as reliable as it once was, but nobody can equal the charcuterie chops of the original Karl Kuby, at least in Dallas anyways. In recent years there are a few things missing, many of which emblematic to this style of cuisine. Westphalian Schinken for example, and on my last visit I didn't even see any classic Schwarzwälder Schinken either. Also, I am not exactly sure that the weinerwurst are made in house any longer, though they are still quite good; wherever they're sourced from. Unlike previous eras they do have some competition of sorts, as Central Market carries many German cold cuts from Schaller & Weber and even barrel pickles. Prior to the mid 2000s, that certainly was not the case. Prices are still fairly benign given rampant inflation, and the adjacent restaurant is still a strong choice for breakfast or lunch on a lazy Saturday. The decorations or vibe as it were hasn't really changed since my first visit in the 80s, which is actually a great thing, as shopping for cold cuts or enjoying their tremendous Ruben requires no pretentiousness. I would say the service is more than amicable, though I haven't seen the old timers there that I used to many many years ago, but that's to be expected. read more

This is a return trip to a Dallas landmark and must visit for visitors with enough time and for locals who live here. We have been frequenting here for many years and always enjoy our time here. If we lived here - we would surely stop for fresh meats and cheeses as well as grocer staples for fantastic flavors crafted at home. For visits to the restaurant - come for breakfast or lunch, as they close at dinner these days ( it used to be a hopping dinnertime destination). We're in town for just a short time and wanted to see one of my brothers and my dad while we're here. They've been to Kuby's and really like it. My brother suggested meeting there and we agreed to the plan. It's half restaurant and half market. There were a number of people dining, but there were a few empty tables. We looked over the menu and made our decisions. I'm not a big sausage person so that knocked a few items out for me. But I do love a good Ruben, so I ordered that. Sides were fries or warm German potato salad. The potato salad was never in the running. The sandwich was pretty good. It had a lot of meat on it! It definitely needed more dressing on it though. The fries were fine. The service was good and the servers were friendly and efficient. The dining room was fine - nothing special. They did have a lot of cool steins on shelves behind the bar. Came back here after a decade and not much as changed in its interior or setup. I think my initial review was pretty critical, especially since now that Ive been to Germany and have found that German food in general is not exploding with flavor or spices. With that being said, there is still room for improvement. If I could give it 3.5, I would, but thats possible with yelp. Compared to other german restautants in DFW, this place is comparable in flavor to the others. Perhaps the potato pancakes are still the star of the show in my opinion. Crispy, full of oily potato flavor, and with some generous packets of sour cream and apple sauce. The sauerkraut this time wasnt nearly as sweet as I remembered. I do like that you can customize how many sausage links you can get, whether its a variety plate or just hand picking certain ones. There wasnt a huge difference in taste between the different sausage links I had, but they were not dry at all. The potato salad is fine, although I couldnt help thinking the mustard is the main flavor profile of the whole dish. Service was nice, and were able to keep up with filling my water glass. Allow me to first state I came here because of the girl who does the reels - blondes or skinny girls who eat. She raves about the chunky chicken deli salad with pickles. I want to rave about the banana pudding- I've never had a more nostalgic banana pudding experience. The smooth rich creamy texture was amazing but it had a flavor to it that reminds me of something my fancy grandmother put on her table in a fancy glass pudding dish and it was an extra special homemade full of love dessert. I could do without the vanilla wafers and use a nice homemade whip topping instead because I don't like soggy cookies but this was so addictive I could not stop. I did try the chicken salad and it is better than most but she hypes it so well it leads to a little disappointment but still very good $11 for the medium size so I'll get it again if I'm in the area but I don't live in Dallas so I'm not making the drive just for it. The restaurant was closed but market section opened. A very sweet girl checked my items. She is the nicest young lady I've met in a long time I tried the pickles but not my flavor. Food was a nostalgic trip back! Many years ago, I came often with my dad. Always loved the sausages. Yummy schnitzel today was awesome, along with the warm potato salad and braised red cabbage. Female (middle aged blond) was SUPER hurried, and talked so fast I had trouble understanding her. Very impatient attitude. Place was only about 1/3 full. I had to ask for iced tea refills in a tiny plastic cup. The busboy was helpful with refills. Server never returned to the table until dropping the check while I was still eating. Never queried as to how the food was etc. I sat with a wet napkin and wet table top from the iced tea sloshing over when it was first delivered. Service upgrade needed! Sigh. read more

The service was fast too so that was a plus! As for the market in the other room, we liked that they had all the German meats and sausages, but overall the market was underwhelming. Never got to taste the food. Apparently the restaurant has vastly different hours from the "store." The hostess rudely informed us about this fact, and cursed us behind our backs to the cashier as we left, sad that we drove over 50 mins for German food.
