It's hard to find good service these days. And this place was spot on. I ordered Togo but ended up eating it at the bar while drinking a beer. Saves me the headache of asking for a to go box. While I was I was putting my extra food away, the bartenders co worker was almost immediately asking if they could remove my trash. I said no thank you, I have some left over that I'm going to take home, but I sure do appreciate the gesture. We tried this Dallas institution for the first time this past week, aaaaannnd...once is enough. It's nice to step back a few decades in time, but you expect the food to deliver, and Chip's came up short. We ordered the fried mushrooms to start, and they were so hot that one of us severely burned her lower gums on them. Seriously! A prescription from the dentist was sought; mea culpa but damn. Once they were less volcanic, they were good. We split a burger with fried onions, and it was dry. The meat was overbooked, the bun was over toasted, and the whole thing needed plenty of beer to go down smoothly. The fries are fine, and we did appreciate that they had some steamed broccoli on the menu. Our daughter was happy with her kids cheeseburger meal, and she did like the chocolate-caramel malt shake she scored at the end. A main reason that we're landing on three stars is the ice cream situation. One of us ordered a soft serve vanilla, and nobody told her that the machine was down, so what she got instead was a cup of half melted Blue Bell soup...are you kidding! Thanks for the prompt refund, but letting your customer know what the situation is in advance goes a long way. So, we tried it. Add a notch to the Dallas belt. First off, the burgers used to be great. They are no longer. It is very dirty and we observed someone taking out the trash And putting new liners in, then coming back straight back without washing his hands to make milkshakes for customers. So many health violations in this place. I am shocked the health department hasn't paid this place a visit. They need to asap. Called in order for office meeting and when I got there, they didn't have an item that Chip's has listed on their website menu. Manager offered no apologies for their mistake but to say the guy is new when I questioned that I confirmed my order over the phone. Now the rest of my food is getting cold while waiting for something else to replace for my coworker's meal. I did say that it was sad they didn't apologize for their mistake, he just stared at me. And No I didn't raise my voice, but did point out their poor customer service. We walked in the restaurant and let the guy know it was our first time. He was very polite and helpful. We ordered a few of the 1/3 burgers, cooked medium on the poppy seed buns. You have an option to order with different buns, but elected what they recommended. We also opted for a half and half basket of fries and onion rings. There were plenty for us to share! What's not to love about a Dallas burger icon: Chip's Old Fashioned Hamburgers!?! Since moving to the Dallas area in the 1980's, we found Chip's to be a consistent burger joint. Sadly, we're usually not south of LBJ very often. But when we are and it's mealtime, it's always a sure thing. From the poppy seed toasted buns, solid burger patty and fresh toppings, to the awesome crispy tater tots- Chip's is a winner!! Note that parking can be tight, so it's best to come not at a prime meal time. They are doing some alley construction right behind the restaurant. We found a spot right out front at 1:00 on a Sunday, so we must have hit it right. They have a front screened in patio. Enter through the door off the side parking lot (it's painted Entrance on the building) to get to the ordering line or you can work your way in through the patio. Been a customer since the 1980's starting at the Harry Hines location. This location on Lovers Lane is a classic burger place. The order process is organized and efficient. The menu is expansive and able to satisfy different tastes. The burger is fantastic. The sesame seed buns are a must. The meat is premium grade and perfectly paired with fresh vegetables. Your first bite confirms the term " old fashion " is in your hands. French fries are golden brown with the right crunch. Atmosphere and vibe are conducive to relaxed dining. **** Critic's Review... Sad **** Although the food quality is tasty, the issues and poor cleanliness will keep me away. My Burger: Good size, meat to the edges of the bun, a traditional big burger. I kept it simple... 1/3 lb patty cooked medium, cheese, crispy bacon, double lettuce, and ketchup. Flavor score: 8 of 10 However, when I ordered cheese, I was not asked which type. They offer several cheeses and I was testing the cashier. Sadly, the cashier picked American without saying anything. There was no ketchup on the burger and the lettuce was so minimal, you could barely see it in the center cut photo (left half) - not even close the 2x I ordered. I was able to get a side of lettuce which I used on the right 1/2 of the center cut photo to demonstrate what I expected. Not a good order fulfillment. Overall: 3 out of 10 for bad construction. Onion Rings - thin cut: What a delicious blast!!! Ate every one!!! Delicious! Score: 9 of 10 Fries: I asked for extra crispy "so they snap". I was told it could be done. Sadly, got so-so medium cooked and not really crispy at all. Only ate a few with ranch... about 8-10 fries in all. Sadly, just ordinary. (Do not expect crispy.) Score: 4 of 10 Chocolate Shake: Perfect thickness to get through a straw without being too runny. But that's only when you first get it. That fact is gone within 6+/- minutes. It's served in a thin plastic cup - not styrofoam to keep it cold. (Stupid mistake!) Would be better to be thinker and colder to last longer. Lost it's consistency 1/2 way through it. Atmosphere: Visually fun... but the walls are the cleanest part of this place. Our table was sticky from the first time I touch it! I went to wash my hands and wanted move tables, but she said no. Seemed to only have had crumbs brushed on the floor all day long between customers - never wiped down with cleaning solution and a rag all day. (And in the 90 min we were there, customers came and went but I never observed a table wipe down!) Ugh - the floor was rancid throughout the dining area... 20-30 foot area of visible old sticky spills from the day all over the 'main walkway'. You could see gross areas so noticeably it was easy to step around the small spots. I told staff it needed to be cleaned now and in the 90 minutes we were there... no one cleaned it. (Lazy standards!) Accountability it at the top!!! Needs a new GM! Also, 6pm on a Monday night there were only 3 other tables while we were there. At a minimum, that should have been 8-10 tables. Seems people have noticed what I see and are silent voting by not going back. FYI - I asked for a to-go portion of lettuce in a sealed container. Although airtight, 15 hours later, the lettuce was mostly brown. Not very fresh or if the sack was opened that day... it's the cheapest available. (Many places I test for lettuce to-go can last 15+ hrs staying fresh... and Tex-Mex places are the best!) If the tables, floors and bathrooms are this gross... what will you find in the food storage areas, freezers and refrigerators?!? (Did they get a segment on "Kitchen Nightmares" with Gordon Ramsey?!? They definitely qualify from what I saw!) Overall Score = 2 stars Unfortunately, if everyone has my experience... it's only an overall 2 star (and that's being generous!) I'm not a huge burger person, but when I did do get some, I always get a veggie burger. The burger itself was good. The quality is up to part with its value. The sweet potato fries were whatever, I wouldn't get it again. I do recommend the poppy seed bun though! The interior is very spacious and there are plenty of seats to dine into. The service was good. The man behind the counter was friendly. I placed my order and then sat down and the food came. The order was for a buffalo burger (medium rare), fried dill pickles, and fried mushrooms. The food came out very quickly, and when I cut the burger in half I realized that the burger was undercooked. I had ordered medium rare but the burger was rare. It was warm just on the outside and cold one inside. I didn't want to complain so I just ate it, however I didn't really enjoy it. The fried mushrooms were really good. The ambiance was nice. Came here with some friends after a choral concert. The poppyseed bun on the hamburger was like a cloud, so delicious! I also got a side of fries and ranch, which were also great! Great old school place. I think it is family run. I had a good burger and my choice of bun type, and probably the biggest portion of onion strings and french fries I have ever seen! Casual environment with a bar, and tv's that were playing sports at the time, but you can also sit away from that if you want. I like that the focus was on a good old school burger(where you pick the condiments etc) and not a giant whopper so big that you couldn't bite into it. Pleasant and casual. We had to ask to be served at the bar after standing there for a couple minutes. Turns out the bartender was sitting by the front door playing on his phone. Otherwise, he was friendly. My main concerns are with cleanliness. It's just really, very dirty. The entire place just looks tired and needs a tremendous scrubbing. We sat next to a wall and what I guess was a server/busser station both of which were covered in food. As we were getting ready to leave, we watched a cockroach cross the dining room floor. This place survives because it is a neighborhood joint. Average food, long history. But honestly food is not at all deserving of 3 stars. However the shakes are possible the best ever. We probably will only support this business for the oreo shakes. The reason for the 2 stars. My husband ordered a fried bbq bacon sandwhich with no tomatoes. It came out Grilled and With tomatoes. We sent it back, the second attempt they brought out a plain fried chicken without bacon and without sauce. We sent it back. The third attempt- the correct sandwich came out but chicken was raw. At this point, 45 min later, the whole table ate and my husband sat through 3 attempts for a sandwhich. Needless to say, he is livid at this point. I went to the manager and asked for our money back and we will get him dinner elsewhere. He refunded our money. Pre Shelter in Place visit but now open for pick up Chips has been around for almost 40 years. This location was the 2nd and is over 20. For a classic hamburger it's hard to beat. Patties are carmelized to a beautiful crisp with a medium middle on an old flat top. Wow, powerful and satisfying flavor. The menu is extensive with a host of salads, hot dogs etc. I'm glad they aren't closer to my house. I'd eat here way to often. By the way they have added a full bar area that looks like it might be worth a visit. This is a repurposed International House of Pancakes from way back which adds to its bona fides!
