Kuhns used to provide good tree service. That is no longer the case. I asked for an estimate for some work and they gave me a 2 hour window. No one showed up at the end of that time so I called them and was told the arborist was held up although he never bothered to call to let me know. He came 29 minutes later and spoke to me very rudely, as though he was doing me a favor. He rudely asked me if I wanted an estimate or not and I decided I wouldn't do business with such a company. Don't waste your time with these people -- there are a number of local tree service providers who are actually civil. read more

I had Khuns Tree come give and estimate for getting a tree trimmed and/or taken down. I requested quotes from 4 companies. Kuhn's was the first to come out, gave the most thorough estimate and reasoning for their recommendation, and were the cheapest (by 4-5x in some cases). Several others recommended removing the tree without any explanation, charging thousands. Kuhns said the tree was fine and just needed to be trimmed. They were able to come within a few days and did the work perfectly. They even installed a new cable on the tree for no extra charge (another company quoted $1250 just for that). They cleaned up after themselves and the tree looks great. Others clearly just wanted to charge us as much as possible. Kuhns did exactly what we needed and didn't gouge us. Thank you! When one says "darling my darling, could we please buy a house with trees? Lots of them! Big ones! I love trees, don't you?"...you really DO deserve what you get. What you get is a $2000 bill, 7 calls to the tree guys, 3 visits from the tree guys, 2 hours disputing the bill, 3 calls to your credit card company, and a bunch of logs (and a pile of sawdust) sitting in your front yard...which results in a fine from your HOA (the irony is that we were doing all this tree trimming to PREVENT a HOA citation). Are you ready? Try to follow along, because I can only do this once. Several months ago, we bought a lovely house. One that is surrounded by 6 large trees that were severely overgrown. As summer waxed, the trees became more and more unruly, and there was one particular tree that was splitting, causing us to worry that it may fall on a neighbor's car. So we called several tree places...once of which was Kuhn's Tree Service. The guy that came out to give our estimate was very knowledgeable, talked us through his assessment on the health of the trees, and we agreed to the following: 1 tree to be cut down completely and the stump grounded up, 2 trees to be cabled so that they could be saved, and all 5 trees to be pruned and trimmed. All for the price of $2000 (other tree places were charging around the same, but it didn't include cutting down the one tree - so Kuhn's was the best priced option). I called to make an appointment and the lovely lady told me to sign the estimate form and to fax it into her, and she'll try to get scheduled for Tuesday. Of course, I make this call at work while heading into a meeting, so I forgot that I had to fax in the form...until Tuesday, when my husband (who was just running home at lunch to grab something), noticed that the tree guys were there, pruning away! While unexpected (I hadn't sent in the signed estimate, saying that I was accepting the charges and the work), I was still pleased. Heh, until my husband reads this review - he'll never know that I dropped the ball on this (um, sorry hunny!). At the end of the day - they finished pruning 4 of the trees, and cut down the 1 tree - but the cabling nor the stump grinding was completed. Next day they finished the pruning, and the cabling, but the stump remained ungrounded. They would be back the next day they promised us...but alas, never showed. Three days later, we call Kuhn's and they promised to get the tree stumper out the next day. The next day, no stumping. We called Kuhn's again. They said something about being overbooked but that the stump guys would be out next week. At this point, my husband gets worried. We had already paid in full, and there really was no leverage that we had to get them back out here to finish the job. After 2 more calls and much arguing, my husband got them to agree to refund half of the payment until the stump is ground. At which point, then we will repay that money. Sounds complicated right? Yeah...you hadn't heard anything yet! After 4 days of no refund and no stump grinding (at this point the story is that the stumper broke and it would take a week before they got the part in), I began the lovely process of calling my credit card to get half of the charges reversed. While I love my credit card company...it did take 3 very painful calls before that straightened out...only to find out that the day that my credit card company reversed the charges...was the day that Kuhn refunded half of my payment. Of course. Which resulted in a call from Kuhn - which I got quickly straightened out (again, the lady was VERY nice and very professional...she is the reason why Kuhn is getting 3 stars and not 2), and a promise that they would send out the tree stumper the VERY NEXT DAY. Did I see a ground tree stump when I got home? NOPE! Another call we FINALLY get the tree stumper out that weekend. Which resulted in a big hole filled with sawdust...and the lovely citiation from our HOA. The moral of the story? NEVER BUY A HOUSE WITH 6 LARGE OVER GROWN TREES. However, if you should, only pay up front and the other half after the job is down. And while you're at it - think long and hard about how badly you want your stump ground (yeah, still have no idea what the hell that is...I just see a big hole filled with logs and sawdust...and a citiation from our HOA). read more

Bad News with a chain saw Hired them to clean up some of our trees, take out dead wood etc. They absolutely butchered our 60+ year old flowering cherry tree. They offered to come out and meet with us, but stood us up 3 times! Unbelievable! This "trimming" is a barbaric act, that, sadly, can't be undone. read more

Unethical service. Did work for our neighbors after a wind storm left their tree leaning into our tree. They removed the uprooted base of the tree and left the whole of the body to swing into our yard and dangle 5 feet above ground. We asked the workers what was going on and they laughed at us and told us to go away and call the owner because it's not their problem. We did so and the owner herself was reasonable and told us her foreman would give us a call. He did but tried to tell us the tree was "just a branch" and maybe he could work something out. We said no, this is a hazard that they left in our yard due only to the work they performed, and if they don't remove it we will file a complaint with MD licensing. He said he'd try to work with us, but now won't do anything as we cited taking action against the dangerous work. Hung up. We have filed a complaint with maryland forestry and hope to see them lose their license soon. If you don't want your neighbors to despise you, I'd advise against using Kuhn's. read more

I had Kuhn's Tree Service come out to give me an estimate for removing a large (100 ft. plus) tree from my yard and have the stump ground. I also had 3 other reputable tree companies come out and give estimates as well. I decided to proceed with Kuhn's as they were the lowest bid, and in one case was 80% lower than another company. They were very responsive and easy to reach about getting the job scheduled and followed up diligently with the arrangements and coordinating the job. They showed up on time the day that they were scheduled to begin and worked professionally to complete the work. Once the tree was completely down, they informed me that they would be back the next morning to remove the larger pieces. First thing the next morning, they showed up as promised and removed all of the wood. They completed the entire job in the time frame that they promised and did a great job removing the tree. I don't always go with a company based on price, but I'm glad that i did in this case as not only were the by far the most reasonably priced, but they completed the job with excellent customer service that i'm sure even the most expensive company wouldn't have rivaled. Buyer beware, this service is a consumer risk! I hired Kuhn's Tree Service, Inc. after a company representative, whose name is Sean, and who represented himself to be an arborist, agreed (at the lowest comparative price) to cut back overhanging branches from neighboring trees that grew on an abutting for sale property. On the day of the work all went well until, the workers suddenly stopped work and left a tree undone. After calling Sean and getting the workers to resume the work, the neighbor's house-keeper (oddly) threaten to call the police if the workers dared to cut the remaining branches overhanging my property because she was told that I didn't own any air rights above my property. Knowing my legal rights and having peacefully had their overhanging branches cut for many years, this irrational outburst made no sense. After I insisted the workers finish the job and ignore the neighboring housekeep's rants, they proclaimed they were leaving, and then left. Just like that, no explanation. When I told Sean that I refused to pay for the undone work, Sean offered me a new deal, saying he would check the health of the overhanging neighboring trees (they were obviously sickly) and would give me a free tree health report, but only if I first paid in full, despite the undone work. After agreeing to the deal and paying, Sean showed up to check the health of the trees and ostensibly did so. Having waited one month for the tree health report, I called Sean who, to my shock, proclaimed that he didn't remember making any promises, and abruptly hung up. Having complained to Laura, the owner and an arborist, I discovered that Sean had lied to me as he was not an arborist. Because of that call, Laura order Sean to fix my problem, and thus Sean rang me. However, that phone call was a disaster as Sean misrepresented that he had witnessed the police threaten his workers. When I told him I had security footage of the whole day and everyday that followed the event, and that the footage disagreed with him. Sean (in a very cynical tone) declared that he, anyway, never made any promise to me and was confused as to what it was that I wanted. Realizing that his lies were out of control and growing, I told Sean that I no longer wanted any of his services and that I would be canceling the payment for the unfinished work. After that conversation, I tried many times but to no avail to reach Laura, so I cancelled the payment. Only after I cancelled the payment did Laura call, but by then I was done with her company. This review concerns firewood purchase only. Ordered 2 cords of firewood, delivered and dumped. After stacking, I'd say I got between 1-1/4 and 1-3/8 cord of unseasoned wood. Doesn't burn in a well-drawing wood stove. I hate to pay for kiln-dried firewood, but for what I paid for this load, at least I'd have one cord of good firewood. After 28 years in PG County, I'm still searching for a good firewood dealer. After originally writing this review, Kuhn's did offer me an additional "free" cord of better seasoned firewood, but I'm not interested in taking a day off to wait for more green firewood. If they do have better dried firewood, I'm wondering why they didn'tt deliver that to cash-paying customers. The first half of firewood is fire, and if if won't burn, its not firewood. During the original delivery, their driver mentioned making several 1/4-cord deliveries before me. I don't know who would pay for delivery of such small amounts of wood, but apparently they didn't take those into account when loading the truck originally. Kuhn's needs to put effort into getting things right the first time. read more

I could not be more pleased with my tree removal experience with Kuhns. They beat the competition's price by a couple hundred dollars, and did a fantastic job not only removing a sick, very tall pine tree that towered over the roof, but did an equally great job removing all debris from the lawn. My only regret was not having them remove the stump grindings (extra fee) because it was far more work than anticipated to fill the hole and remove the chips. But that's on me. Due to the 4/21/2017 microburst storm in Montgomery County MD (mini-tornadoes, 1.5" hail-storm), the property surrounding the high-rise condo I live in suffered alot of damage, including alot of tree damage. Our management company contracted Kuhn's Tree Service. I work from home and can see about a third of our property from my unit. I watched a 4-man crew work all day yesterday to make 8 trees safe to walk under and park under. The work is physically hard, and requires careful strategy; ie, lowering huge, heavy limbs down slowly, without endangering people or property. They worked tirelessly for hours, chipped all the branches, and left the property spotless. One tree on the property that escaped storm damage -- a pine tree that shades a walkway and is in decline -- wasn't originally scheduled for work. Our management added the tree belatedly, and Kuhns' crew was here again this morning. It took them only 30 minutes to remove 11 dead limbs, and chipper them all. We called Kuhn's to remove a huge tree in our backyard and they were able to come out a week later. The tree was pretty close to the house which made us nervous how easily something could go wrong. Kuhn's suggested using a crane to help the process be problem free. With an 8 man crew, the tree was removed and lifted out within 3 hours. No damage was done during the removal and to top it off, their price was the best around :) I would highly recommend Kuhn's to anyone looking for an affordable tree service that's trust worthy. read more

This is not a reputable company and the people are incredibly mean and incompetent. I hired them to cut several large trees from my property. They came back twice to finish what was quoted as one full day job. In the end the job was unfinished with trees uncut and my lawn a mess. They also demanded payment before the job was completed. They did not respond to calls or emails and never came back to finish the work. I had to hire another company to finish the job which cost me significantly more in the end. This was first time using this service, I ordered 3 cords of fire wood. I was told by the owner that the wood would be delivered and a date was set. The owner told me that the wood would be delivered in 2 truck loads, one with 2 cords the other with 1 cord, wood was delivered, I told the driver that I would pay cash when the last load was delivered. The driver tell me that he only needed to deliver one truck load because he had added the extra cord on the same truck, I was confused . I spoke to the owner and she said that it was not usually all loaded on one truck. I paid cash for the delivery thinking that all 3 cords of fire wood had been delivered. Once I stacked the wood it was clear that only 2 cords of wood was delivered. I let the company know of my findings. I got no responds from them. I am very happy with Kuhn's Tree service. Back in late July'16 three trees fell onto our house after the summer storms and did heavy damage to the roof. Unfortunately there was more rain on the way and I needed someone quick to take the tree limbs off and tarp the roof. I called several companies including one that gave me a quote of $24K (for fallen trees, knowing that it was a weekend and there were little alternatives available). I waited till the next day and called three other companies - Kuhn was one of them. Not only did they have the lowest price (very competitive), they were the quickest to come and get the roof tarped up. I dealt with Laura - she was a straight talker and did what she said she would do. I am a little late posting this review, but I really did appreciate their help and the fact that they did not price gouge like the other companies were looking to do.
