The hotel was a great way to disconnect! We stayed for two nights. We loved falling asleep to the birds! The water was warm for showering. The only area for improvement is the gardens close before sunset, so you couldn't watch the sunset in the property gardens. read more

They are on island time and shut down lunch at 3 in prep fir dinner at 5 and reservations for dinner are probably a must although we could have got in given we got there at 3. Unfortunately we missed lunch but the di have a small menu with limited seating between 3-5. They have REALLY cool outdoor gazebos with lush and very cool landscaping and EPIC views over looking the West Maui mountain and ocean on both sides of Maui. At 4000' the views, landscaping and architecture are a must see. Dinner prices looked pricey but worth the experience. I had a Wagu burger for $25 which isn't bad especially given the atmosphere and it was VERY good. For lunch they have a brick pizza oven and reasonably priced. On our anniversary, and on the recommendation of our hotel concierge, we drove out here on our way to the lavender farm. We arrived at 10:20am. We were turned away by a dismissive waiter who informed us that they do not serve anyone between the hours of 10:30am and 11:15am. He wouldn't even offer to seat us with drinks. Not at all what we expected from the pics on site, and definitely NOT WORTH what they charge for the rooms. The lodge, the market and the restaurant seem to be run by three different entities. First, please understand this lodge is rustic. No television (that's fine), no microwave and no refrigerator. The last two amenities are important, because the restaurant is not open for dinner, and unlike hotels where one can order room service or stop into the restaurant or bar to get food, those options are unavailable here. There is a market that closes at 5, with a limited selection of food and beverage. Also, don't plan on having priority for breakfast just because you're staying in the lodge. We decided to try breakfast out, but we're turned away because the restaurant was closed for private tour They supply coffee packs, cream and sugar, but don't refresh the paper cups, sugar and creamer. We had to go to the marketplace and ask for cups each morning, and even then, the market place questioned why we were asking for more cups. They did drop off clean towels, but didn't touch anything else in the room. Everything in our unit was dated (carpet, rugs, walls, shower/bath). The electric fireplace is the only bright spot. It took the chill off the room, as there are old wooden and glass shudders in the downstairs sitting area, in the bathroom and up at the entrance to the unit that let the chill in. The wall between the bed downstairs and the entrance to the bath is very thin and has a gap in it (see picture). We stayed in unit 2, which had a nice view off the deck, but was noisy in the early morning with travelers going to catch the sunrise at Haleakala. If you're a light sleeper, bring earplugs because they won't be supplying them. Similar to a small motel, we could hear the neighbors taking their showers and playing basketball (I mean walking heavily) across the floor. These walls are thin, to say the least. All this would probably have been easier to accept had we not paid almost $400 a night ($394). Extra fun fact: Although they charged us for what we thought was the entire amount prior to our arrival, they snuck in an additional $30 and didn't bother to tell us of the additional charge. We discovered it when we compared our confirmation email to the check in receipt. Extra extra fun fact: check in is at 4pm. We showed up early just after 3pm, and we were handed an envelope that said "Our check in desk has closed for the evening. We're sorry we missed you." It provided instructions on how to get to our unit, but I am wondering why their check in desk closes before check in time??????? read more

Great breakfast best place to stop when coming down after sunrise at the crater. Great ambience

My wife and I were trapped in the hotel for 15 hours and they never called us back. They have disastrously & dangerously bad customer service; great views though. This is a long one so strap in. An important thing to understand is that there are 4 businesses in the same place, all managed by different people and run autonomously. The market, the spa, the lodge, and the restaurant. The Restaurant is the biggest part of their business, followed by the market. The lodge is an afterthought. This review is for the LODGE only. The issue: The Kula complex has two parking lots, an upper one for the spa, restaurant and lodge, and a lower one for the market. The afternoon of February 14th, the upper parking lot was full, so we parked in the lower lot. NBD. We got massages on property (that were great, thanks Alisha). We walk out the door at 5:45 to drive to our Valentine's dinner. The gate to the lower parking lot was locked. We couldn't get the car out. It was not posted anywhere that the lot closes at 5. We were the only car in that lot at that point, we were sitting in the room, they could have knocked or checked. I call the lodge, it's closed, I call the market and restaurant, all closed. There is no after hours number. I contacted them on email and every social media they had, and they NEVER responded. The location is somewhat remote in the mountain town Kula. There were no taxis, no uber, no delivery, no food walkable distance away. So instead of having a nice valentine's day dinner, that my wife had been looking forward to we got to share an old muffin from my backpack. The next morning I go to the restaurant trying to find someone from the hotel, they explain that it is actually totally separate management but because they felt bad the restaurant comped us breakfast which was very nice of them, thanks. I keep waiting for the office to call me. Finally at 11:30 I called them back. They breezily said, "oh yeah we got your message, yeah the bottom lot closes at 5." So they got the message and didn't care their guests were stuck. I pointed out all the above, and how if there had been an emergency it could have been really dangerous for us to be trapped there with no way to contact them. They declined to offer any compensation for this situation besides the breakfast, which to be clear, wasn't them, it was the restaurant manager feeling bad. They pointed out that the original email confirmation from several months ago did mention that the lot closed, at the very bottom. Fine, but that should have been something they said at check in. Check in: we arrived at 4:45, an envelope with our name and a key in it was taped to the door of the restaurant. This was the only communication we had with the lodge management, the note in the envelope included the wifi. The room: There are only 4 rooms at the lodge, we were in two, which had a great view from the balcony across Maui and the bay. There are electric fireplaces in the rooms which were needed. Bed was comfy. It's a little rustic and dated. It is weird there is no fridge or microwave in the room given the remote location, you should be able to keep leftovers fresh. Kula is a good place to base yourself for Haleakala. We left at 4:30 and had plenty of time. We could have left at 5, or maybe even 5:15 for the sunrise. read more

Gorgeous garden within the lodge and restaurant area. No reservations - walk-ins only. They were understaffed on our visit which led to small issues with our order (drink wasn't received and appetizer came after meal), but the staff was friendly and doing their best with the situation. We came as part of the Haleakala tour and as soon as we entered, one of the hostess/servers seemed to be highly stressed (maybe it was too many of us? but they got our orders 40 minutes in prior of us arriving) and rushed everyone to the seating. I got classic breakfast option - potato was too salty and bacon was overdone. There is so much potential - but execution is just meh. Spectacular views. However, make sure you check to see if the wood fired pizza oven is on if you want the pizza. They don't always offer it and that is the main reason I come here. For that wood-fired pizza! Pizza is 5 stars. View is 5 stars, everything is is mediocre, I've had better. The other dishes that our group had, was so so. Service was nothing spectacular but attentive enough. Worth the stop here if the pizza over is cooking.Also, outdoor seating area is no always open, so its hit and miss. Decor is a little dated, and has a "cabin in the woods" feel to it. There's a little art gallery from a local artist on site - Curtis Wilson Cost. Many beautiful pieces to view. read more

Kula Lodge has been around for decades. The panoramic view of the Maui plains and the West Maui Mountains from their restaurant windows is breathtaking! And they now have outdoor dining for lunch. We started with coconut shrimp, which was fine, a little oily. My dinner was the special of seared ahi and Kauai prawns on garlic mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables. My ahi was too rare, but the prawns were delicious. The waitstaff took the ahi back to get it cooked more, per my request. My significant other had the ribs, which were OK, nothing outstanding or special. Service is friendly, though lacks attention to detail and our waitress disappeared once our entrees were served. My wife and I had such great memories of this place from a vacation past, and came out of the way to have their signature item after waiting 2 years to try it again. We stopped in for brunch after leaving the Haleakala park, not realizing the restaurant had just recently reopened after the fires. Just stepping foot through the front door, we received the warmest of welcomes and had a stellar experience from start to finish. Our server, Megan, was a pure delight and the food was incredible. We came here for lunch we arrived a little early I guess so we had to wait til they opened up for lunch. I guess lunch starts at 11:15. We had a party of 13 so they put several tables together. We had a guy server not sure if his name he was okay wish he was a little more attentive. We asked for separate tabs I'm not sure if that was okay but he kept asking who was on each tab we got asked over three times of who was on each tab. I had the Loco Moco with no egg. I don't eat eggs so it was plain a hamburger patty with brown gravy over wore rice that was $16. Kinda over priced. The good thing was they had local music going on we enjoyed that. Oh and also we ordered Heineken Light he said yes we have. About five minutes later there was no Heineken Lights... Awwwww that was a bummer. I asked how was the Mauimosa they didn't care for it. Mixed feeling about our stay. Beautiful location and cute, clean rooms. KAMA'AINA beware-when booking it states "Kama'aina discount 20%." I booked online and called after to ask about the discount, they told me when I check in and show my ID the adjustment would be made. WRONG, they just give you a voucher for the gift shop equivalent to the 20%. Not honest! The bummer was that If we had known we would have used the voucher for beer and wine at the gift shop, but had just bought it in Kahului. At 6:45 am on Sunday we woke up to a yard person trimming the bushes RIGHT outside our lanai, he was looking in directly at us in bed! He then worked by the window at the head of our bed. Very creepy! Also sad because he cut down the foliage that blocked our view directly into the parking lot. read more

When we arrived to check in in the evening at around only 5:00, nobody there, our key taped to the front door along with another guest key. That in and of itself was not a big deal, but there was nobody to talk to regarding any questions we had, could not get ice etc.! Next morning, we were one of only 2 couples early at 7:00 for breakfast. WE WERE NOT ALLOWED TO SIT OUTSIDE BECAUSE THE LARGE BUS TOURS HAVE CONTRACTS. That's right, even though we are only two people. Then, even though we were seated before the large group, they proceeded to make their waffles before they even got to us. I had high hopes for Kula Lodge, being located in beautiful upcountry, and so close to Haleakala, but was super disappointed by the whole experience. Since we were arriving on Thanksgiving Day, I was worried about being able to check in, so called them twice - once when I made the reservation and another time a couple of days before our arrival. The first time I called, they said the restaurant (where check-in usually occurs) would be closed all day, but the lady I talked to told me that the managers lived nearby, and would be able to let me in. I asked how to arrange it, and she told me to call closer to the reservation date. So I called back 2 days prior to arrival, and the lady I talked to that time also reassured me that something would be figured out and we would be able to get into our unit (super vague). I pressed her further, asking how we would receive the instructions, and she said she would have someone e-mail me the instructions by the time we got there. Thursday morning rolls around, the day of our arrival, and still no e-mail. I call the office from the airport, and of course no one answers, because they are closed. However, shouldn't they leave an alternate number for emergencies? Anyway, I called again when we arrived on Maui, not knowing what else to do, but still no answer. We drive to Kula Lodge, hoping for the best. When we get there, the whole property is dark. We stumble around and find the restaurant, hoping that they posted instructions for us... but nothing. We wander around the whole property, looking for our room in case there are instructions on the door or maybe they left the door unlocked. However, our room happens to be underneath another unit, with a door hidden in the back where there are no lights at all. We stumble around the property super stressed for about half an hour, before we finally find the room and let ourselves in (it was unlocked). No communication at all! Furthermore, the next day we go to the restaurant for lunch. The hostess asks us if we have a reservation, and when we say no, she says she'll check to see if any tables are open. My husband mentions that we are staying there (there are only 5 units) in case it helps, and since no one checked us in or greeted us the evening before. She says in a rude manner, It doesn't matter, I still have to check because I only have so many tables. Sheesh, way to welcome your guest! There were so many other ways she could have phrased that in a nicer way... where is the aloha spirit? Overall, nothing about the accommodations or customer service impressed us at all. I'm just giving one star for convenience to go to Haleakala, and one star for being located in upcountry. But if I were to do it again, I would rather stay half an hour away than stay here. We stayed here during the floods of March 2021. The accommodations are well appointed, immaculate and include the best hot shower on Maui. We were soaked to the bone after zip lining in the dumping rain and the heater was not that great but an amazing breakfast made up for it. if your a light sleeper, the road is a little loud with sunrise Haleakala visitors but overall a great night. Honestly, the dining room is smelly, run down, and the food is regrettable. To cap it off, my husband ordered a particular beer and rather than telling him they were out and asking what he'd like instead they just brought him a different beer (a completely different style, from a completely different brewery... what????). We went here immediately after watching a beautiful sunrise at Haleakala since it was on the way down the mountain and easily accessible. Our group of 8 lucked out on a table with little to no wait. AND I am very happy to report that expectation meets reality when other reviewers mention the epic views this restaurant offers. It overlooks the bottleneck area of the island. Just gorgeous. After paying for our breakfast service, our entire party went outside to explore their garden and enjoy the views just a little bit longer. Unfortunately, this place doesn't check off ALL the marks. I don't remember the food as being memorable (I may have been distracted by the VIEWS), it wasn't exactly affordable, and cleanliness could've been improved upon. Overall, I have no regrets about our experience here and am happy to have been able to share it with my family. read more

Unfortunately we came here only for breakfast. When you are from the East coast like me, 8 am on Maui is 2pm our time. I wanted to try local food, maybe fish, anything but eggs and bread but not in luck with that. From the bike ride down Haleakela this place is a god send. It has big bathrooms, places to secure your bikes, and magnificent views. It also was pretty packed when we arrived and there was nobody to seat or greet us. We waited about 20 minutes for a table. But it is island time, and no one is in a rush. It feels like an old classic set up on a mountain and a must stop if you happen to have the chance to go past. I am disappointed I could not try any of their regular menu. The Corned Beef Hash is Amazing! When we finally were seated the service was superb. I read some of the reviews before staying on a Friday night at the Kula Lodge... very mixed. When we first arrived, there was no one at the front desk, so I patiently waited, looked for a bell or a buzzer, and peeked into the office, nothing. There were a couple of workers in the restaurant, which is just several feet from the front desk, they saw me standing and looking for someone, but did not acknowledge me or offer any help. Finally, after a few minutes, I looked at the bartender (a female, who was not busy at all) and politely asked if anyone was working the front desk. She seemed annoyed, and said she was around, she will be there, she has an orange shirt. Finally orange shirted Leah arrived and it was all downhill. She seemed annoyed that she had to stop whatever she was doing to check my family in. I inquired about the hours of the restaurant, she seemed annoyed. I asked a couple of other questions, again, annoyed. LEAH, YOU ARE IN THE HOSPITALITY BUSINESS, TRY TO BE A LITTLE HOSPITABLE! The restaurant was closed for dinner, so we got in our car and drove to another town. In the morning we asked for an hour later checkout, since our sunrise bike ride was running late, I called her from the bike ride. Leah basically told me no, and I basically told her too bad. Before taking the long drive up to the restaurant we called to see if they had face masks available for purchase, due to a couple in our party forget theirs. They advise they did. Upon arrival we found out that this wasn't accurate. So we had to turn around. Which was fine because they don't take reservations, they used COVID as their excuse, and the place was packed. This is my favorite place to eat breakfast ever! Since I am from New York, I cannot get here often, but when I'm on Maui, I make it a point to stop in. The grounds are beautiful! There is a unique outdoor seating that I have not used ... yet. The views are stunning! I had buttermilk macadamia nut pancakes with sliced bananas & coconut syrup. The only negative as the lunch we had to wait very long for our food. They have a nice garden behind this place. And a nice art galley in the lower lever. 4 **** FOR THE CHALET! We stayed at the B&B at Kula Lodge and loved it! We stayed in Chalet 2 and it had a queen bed downstairs and a loft with 2 twin beds. If you like the "rustic" feel, then this would be the place for you! They may want to consider changing out and purchasing new bath towels and new curtains for the chalet, otherwise the view and chalets are a wonderful place to stay. However, if you have seniors that are unable to climb stairs, then you should make sure that the unit you stay in doesn't have any. There are about 8 steps that go down to the main living area and bathroom from the front door, and about 6 stairs that go to the loft. ( My mom 81, thankfully very active, stayed in the loft and during the middle of the night had to make her way down all those stairs to use the bathroom.) I think there could possibly be only 1 that doesn't have stairs in the chalet, which would accompany 2 people. Make sure to check first! There is also no television or Wi-Fi in the rooms!!!! 1 STAR FOR DINNER AT THE RESTAURANT!!! Dinner at the restaurant didn't go too well. We ordered a cajun rib-eye steak for $38 that was much too HOT!! We realized that cajun is spicy, but after watery eyes and our runny noses we decided that we were definitely not a fan!! I literally scraped off the rub from the steak!! They also served our meal (although we did have a choice) with a bismati rice that was cold. When we inquired, the server told us that the new chef had ordered so much rice and they had 30 lbs left over and so they're trying to use it all up. (They were possibly too honest)!! It didn't go complement the rib-eye! Apparently they served some Indian food at one time and it didn't work out. Ugh!!! My mom had a braised short rib which she also was not a fan, describe it as meat with bottled teriyaki sauce poured over it! :( With all this we did mention it to our server and she apologized and told us she would mention it to the chef. Lastly, you would hope that they would compensate you at the end with a complimentary dessert for us or discount the bill! NOTHING!!!!!! The one thing that I did like is the amazing view and the hostess that greeted us was very friendly. **Made reservations for the outdoor seating area which they claim opens on the weekend and it wasn't!!!!
