I'm new to Maine and went here with coworkers. The atmosphere was good, service not so much. I ordered just fried rice and got a full teppenyaki meal. Don't get me wrong it was delicious, but not what I ordered. I was up front that I'm allergic to shellfish but I got shrimp put on my plate. Along with rice that was cooked next to scallops (they make my throat close). I dealt with it and took my left overs home. This place is superb. Best value at lunch seems to be the hibachi combo. Staff is attentive and the food is delicious. It's impressive they can maintain such quality given their large menu. Their decor is exciting and really enhances the experience. Really quite lucky to have such a great place in the area. Always have great luck with their sushi. I normally don't travel to this area of Augusta for dinner as it's generally a chain restaurant, box-store nightmare, but I will go there for Kume. This place has really impressed me every time I have been. The Hibachi is top-notch in quality, quantity, presentation, and price. Their sushi and other menu items are also great. They have this thing that's either a dinosaur egg or dragon egg, can't quite remember which but it's SO GOOD. Avocado deliciousness. They also have a huge, beautiful aquarium! We returned to Kume, and found that my previous review may have been a bit harsh. Upon review, the food was excellent, the service exceptional, and the portions more than adequate. Moreover, the owners are more than willing to accept suggestions, and this tells me a great deal about the way they conduct business. In a customer based industry it is refreshing to see the owners concerned with customer satisfaction. In the end, I cannot recommend Kume enough. read more

Is there a 0 stars? Because this place needs 0 stars. My friend and I both go to the college near here, and after receiving the check, we split the bill. The restaurant lost our credit cards somewhere in the establishment for 30 mins, blaming us for "giving it to the wrong waitress" and asking us if we were sure they had even taken our cards. Then, after finding our cards, they didn't offer any sort of concession for losing our credit cards. No free dessert, no apologizing manager, no 10% off, nothing. We had gone to Kume the week prior with our parents, and the treatment of college students as opposed to middle-aged adults is ridiculous for a college town. They did not seem to be in any hurry to find our credit cards, and came to the table multiple times to ask if we were sure we hadn't gotten the cards back, as if WE were at fault for them losing our credit cards. I'm never coming back here again, and any college students in the area should definitely not come either, because they clearly do not care about us as customers. read more

Alright so I have to divide this up a bit.... the Hibachi is fantastic! Just make sure you make a reservation a day or two in advance to avoid waiting an hour! I have nothing bad to say about the hibachi, the food is absolutely amazing. The sushi is to die for... I'm a serious sushi lover. The waitstaff for the dining area....not so great if you are visiting on a Friday/ Saturday night. It gets swamped! I feel bad for the TWO waitresses handling the about 35 people in the dining room. While the managers lean against the wall and watch the hibachi. There is a staffing issue there. The pressure was being put on the waitstaff and they were starting to get a bad attitude. Especially the waitress with the straight cut bangs. Who kept blowing me off when I would ask for the check... my friend and I waited 25 minutes after finishing our food to get the checks... which came back completely wrong and mixed up. So I offered to help the waitress split up the check properly. When I went to grab my check she pushed my hand away and stormed off to another table to deliver their check. Excuse me? I can understand Friday nights can be stressful and crazy. But never push a customer away when they are trying to pay you! Especially if you're expecting to get a decent tip... Luckily I still love the food and the beautiful restaurant atmosphere. It's just been hit or miss with the service. I recommend making a hibachi reservation or ordering take out over the phone! I've been here 4 times since it opened. Three times for hibachi and once as a table dinner. The food is consistently adequate if not good. The fish tank and decor is beautiful and really nice to look at. They really did a great job renovating the place. That being said, let me tell you why I've given it only 2 stars. The restaurant is very very loud. I work at a bar, and I say this. So it's saying a lot. Our last meal there were four birthdays being celebrated by nearby hibachi grills. Each time the lights went off, strobe lights and laser type lights came on and music got even louder than it already is, which is pretty loud. It was sensory overload every time and completely disorienting as well as distracting from our own dinner. If someone were to come in here that had epilepsy I fear they would have a seizure. Only our first chef was interactive and entertaining, sadly the others just came and cooked and left with very minimal interaction. They also missed every single time they attempted to get food into customers mouths and messed up during their "performance". I feel as though as this is a hibachi restaurant and they're hibachi chefs they should better skilled at their jobs. If the chefs were better trained and especially if they would stop the disco rave party for every birthday I'd give 4 stars. read more

We have been here several time and have always enjoyed it. Last night we were very underwhelmed. We waited for 10 minutes for someone to acknowledge us to be seated. We had a party of 6 and were doing the Habachi. The waitress taking our order was very short with everyone even the children. We ordered dinners, some sushi, and the scallion pancake app. Appetizer came out and it was one very rubbery scallion pancake, terrible, really wish we hadn't paid $6 for that. Our chef came to the table and started his routine, he was very pleasant but I can only assume inexperienced. While the tables around us were being regaled with the volcano, train, and Sake routine they were all left out of our dinner. The food was good enough, everything was a bit under done but tasted fine. We were a little afraid to ask the waitress for chopsticks but finally had to flag her down as my daughter wanted another sushi roll, again very short with us and appeared frustrated. We have never had this experience at Kume before but will probably avoid it from now on. read more

There are few places in Augusta for decent, intertesting food other than great lobster rolls (Barn), couple good diners, or bland chains. Kume is a nice addition for the food but lacks a lot in service training. I have been there twice for early dinner at a time when there are few people since I understand at night it can get a bit packed. The food was much better than I anticipated for this "small chain" restaurant, great tuna and other fish dishes served seared/rare, creative ones like whole fried stuffed avocado, flavorful lightly sauced stir frys, fresh sushi. The food came quickly at this quiet time. The big issue is that the staff (and I asked bartender, waitstaff, etc.) knew absolutely nothing about the menu which surprisingly lacks any detail about the dishes and is organized in a very confusing manner, except for the sushi menu. "So what is in this "special" dish with a unique name? Does rice come with this one? What is the difference between these two special fish dishes? What kind of sauce? This one sounds like a roll of some kind, oh, it's not?" Even though it may sound tacky, more pictures would even help if the menu does not spell it out. Also the second time we were there, again early quiet, the bartender took way too long to even recognize us, talking with a coworker, even though we were the only ones at the bar. I avoid the Americanized hibachi show but that is great for kids and I fondly remember Benihana from my childhood. I understand Rocky Yunosuke, a playboy millionaire, began it all in New York many years ago. This place is worth going to since choices in the city are limited. The location in a strip mall mecca is lackluster, of course. Although water street may be the near future hotspot with new brewpub coming, a great diner and the BBQ joint. 4 stars from comparison to the other offerings in town. read more

One thing that felt a little odd was the manager or maybe he was the owner (I'm assuming that's what he was) that was walking around, seemingly looking in on what the waitstaff was doing, obviously making sure they were doing it right and to his satisfaction. They hadn't been open for long, so I know he was monitoring things. It just seemed like he was a looming presence that wasn't adding anything to the situation. Had a great lunch today! Sushi and a roll special named after my favorite Walking Dead guy, Daryl Dixon! Our server Christina is amazing! The atmosphere is so comfortable and inviting. I had my favorite drink, the Fishbowl my friend had chicken hibachi and loved it! The decor is beautiful with an enormous fish tank in the center. The food presentation is exceptional. Waitress blamed the bar but others around us came after us and they were all getting their drinks! Appetizers came as they were cooking our meal. A few ordered a second drink and never got them. Our chef had very little personality, Food was Ok but dirty dishes were not cleared. We then waited at least 30 minutes for our check. Finally someone went and asked for it. The ambience is really nice especially for Augusta. I was mesmerized by the unique fish swimming in the tank in the center of the restaurant. My dining companion and I didn't feel up for the Hibachi "show," we just wanted a peaceful meal so we sat in the dining room. We were able to order hibachi right off the menu. The steak was quite tough but the chicken teriyaki was yummy as was the plentiful fried rice, and grilled vegetables. It's a nice change of pace for Augusta and I will certainly go back! read more

Just visited KUME for the first time and, I've got to say, it far exceeded my expectations. My father and I tucked into a booth, ordered drinks and asked for suggestions as the menu is expansive. Our server, Jay, was lovely, accommodating, brought our drinks immediately and was great with explanations and suggestions. We shared the chicken yakitori, yellowtail with jalapeño (not too spicy), the 8pc sushi platter (complete with California role, house salad and miso soup) and beef negimaki. Yes, it was a lot of food as portions are generous, but we wanted to try a bit of everything. Not one item disappointed. The yellowtail with jalapeño was my favorite (so fresh and buttery), but every dish was very good and quite well priced. I'm going back as soon as possible to try the duck spring rolls...and the rest of the menu. Give it a try. There's something for everyone on the menu. And...for sports lovers, they have TVs at the bar. UPDATE: I went back for lunch, tried two new things and they were fantastic. The pan-fried pork dumplings were very tasty and the dough was perfectly thin/light, so I could actually taste the filling. We had our 1st visit to KUME last night and it was a blast. Our waitress Val was very attentive and kept us informed of what we needed to do and how to order in the Hibachi dining area.
