The place had just opened so I'm going to give it another chance. The ramen started out good but the broth lost flavor while I ate (this happened another time and the common denominator was corn so maybe it watered it down - I really don't understand corn in ramen). The noodles were good. The place had a nice vibe. Staff was very friendly. They didn't have traditional deep ramen spoons but I hope they get some, server found me the biggest spoon they had and I made due - was very kind. Definitely want to try the hibachi next. read more

(3.5 stars) I actually didn't realize there was a sushi place so close to me until I was suddenly craving some and happened to be in the area. I came at a slow time of day, so it didn't take long for my 3 sushi rolls to be ready. They were all good but....I dunno. There was something a little off. Maybe the ingredients weren't as fresh as I've had at other sushi places in chattanooga? For example, I got a roll that had mango on it but the mango tasted slimy and like it came from a can. By far our favorite local hibachi/sushi spot. It sits back in the parking lot of Aldi and is a small store front. They have a sushi bar inside or you can sit at one of the several tables inside. Great family owned place with very nice employees. Most of the time we are ordering carry out. Typically only takes 20 minutes, most recently only took 10 minutes during the COVID-19 time period. The helpings are huge(!) and the flavors are great. We've tried almost all of their sushi rolls and they are all great. My most recent favorite is the Hawaii roll. And ALWAYS ask for extra yum yum because it's exactly that, YUM YUM! Support local and try out this gem! read more

Easy to walk in on a Saturday night at 7:00, party of two. Casual atmosphere, families and couples. Staff was polite and efficient. Sushi was properly made and tuna was fresh and flavorful. We had the Crazy Tuna Roll, which had black pepper over two types of tuna. Veggie Hibachi was nothing memorable, but vegetables were crisp and the perfect size for chopsticks. Got to go sushi and it hit the spot! Was craving sushi but we live far away from anything great so I searched reviews to find this hidden gem. It's in a small area by an Aldi in the shopping center that seems older. Very nice inside and very attentive. The lady walked up almost immediately to help me and take our order. They let me order and go shop at Aldi while they fixed the sushi rolls. I drove all the way back home after (30 min) and the sushi was still fresh and great! I'll definitely be going back to eat in the restaurant and try more soon - will update with pics and more info about other items! First I love this place for their hibachi. The sauces that come with it and portions are amazing. This order I got a simple Spicy tuna rol and Salmon and Avacado roll. I was disappointed this was only 6 pieces cs the standard 8 or 10. I had spicy tuna roll at another place and it was 8 pieces and fresher tasting. I wasn't a fan of the sushi, but may try other options. Just would have been nice to know it was only 6 pieces when I ordered. read more

Their health score was a 96, so that's good, but the food was so solidly mediocre, that my wife remarked that I'd have gotten better sushi at Ichiban - a scathing indictment from her. I love the quiet atmosphere of Kumo, and in my opinion they have the best sushi in town hands down. My favorite rolls are the Phoenix roll and Fire Island...Phoenix roll definitely being my favorite. The first time I dined at Kumo, I absolutely loved it BUT the second time was so bad that I will never return again! I started by ordering one of favorite hand rolls. The spicy shrimp hand rolls that I have order at other places usually comes with some sort of crunchy vegetables like cucumber, carrot and then sometimes avocado and/or sprouts but Kumo's version had very little shrimp and crunchy flakes that were mixed in with the shrimp and spicy mayo- it was gross. While I was waiting for my 2nd item, a Fire Island Roll, a cockroach came charging in my direction along the wall. I had to scare it away. Gross! The last straw was when I ordered tobiko and they gave me masago. I explained to the manager that I thought they got my order wrong and she insisted that they gave me tobiko and then she proceeded to tell me that tobiko eggs were smaller than masago. She then brought out small containers of black and red eggs and told me they were masago. I knew she was wrong and I think she knew she was wrong but she insisted she had them characterized correctly. Tobiko is my favorite sushi and I have had it many times and I love it because it has a significant crunch and I love when the eggs burst in your mouth- I know tobiko and what they served me was not tobiko. I was so very disappointed because I did enjoy tobiko on my first visit there. What a disappointing and weird experience. read more

This place has the best Volcano roll in town in my opinion. We always order takeout, but it is really consistent and good.

First off, let me say I grade Sushi/ Japanese restaurants with a very critical eye. If there were a 3.5 rating, I would give Kumo that. But since I don't think they deserve a 4 rating, it's going to have to be a 3. Kumo is GREAT for one thing: Sashimi. Their Sashimi is extremely generous in portion, almost twice the portion I'm used to seeing in typical Sushi restaurants. It's also very good, fresh Sashimi. The selection is limited but the quality of the fish was impressive, considering Kumo is in a random strip mall in land-locked Chattanooga -- the kind of quality I'm used to finding in good Japanese restaurants in coastal cities with direct access to the good stuff. Kumo's sushi is decent, but not great. Also, I have to admit, I was put off by the fact that I specifically brought a "date" there because I saw they had a "Love Boat" on the menu, which is usually a variety of Sushi, Sashimi and other cooked Izakaya style foods on a large wooden boat placed between the diners. It's very fun and a great "date" thing to order, sharing off of the boat together. When our "boat" arrived, it was on a big but ordinary plate. Covered with tasty food, but still... don't list the boat if it's not a boat, imho. It was very disappointing. Still though, the fish quality is great and the sashimi portions are excellent. This time the food was worse it had a horrible smell when you walk in and me and my wife are having stomach problems after eating there. We use to go there and food was great. This time we went back and the new waitress got openly upset when we were deciding what to eat. When food came out the sushi with tempura shrimp the oil used for shrimp tasted rancid. I use to love the Yummy roll and I had to actually spit it out a couple of times. Won't be going back. I'm a huge fan of hibachi and let me tell you, this is the best place I've found so far in Chattanooga. I recently became vegetarian and I've noticed a lot of hibachi places skimp on the vegetables, either they're frozen or just cabbage, etc. but Kumo gives you huge yummy cuts of fresh broccoli, zucchini, onion and mushrooms!! The bento box is awesome bc you get a variety of items - egg rolls, sushi, tofu and veggies, rice, and a salad. And their mochi dessert is so yummy too! I would definitely recommend this place. I've eaten a lot of questionable sushi. Honestly, I've been really lucky. I guess my number was up, because I have never been sick from eating sushi like I was from Kumo. I shouldn't have eaten it. It didn't smell fresh. It didn't look fresh. But for the love of ramen, it should not have been crunchy. And after my third yellowtail roll, everyone wanted out of the pool. In the meantime, the SO ordered habachi steak, which was incredibly chewy and only came served with grilled onions. What happened to the zucchini, mushrooms and broccoli? It was also packed with so much white rice there wasn't room for the protein. So basically we paid $12 for a box of steamed rice. The "clear soup" was laughable. It tasted like someone waved hot water over a chicken and added a jar of white pepper to see if anyone would notice. We noticed. We used to be regulars. Things started declining and we've been visiting less and less. And then they just decided to nail the coffin of our wallet shut with this last order. read more

Kumo is in an unassuming strip mall close to ALDI and Firehouse Subs. For this reason, I was surprised upon entering to see that the space was much larger than I imagined. Upon being told to choose any open seat, we received full, sit-down, service from a waiter. The menu includes a mix of sushi and hibachi items. My dining partner and I both opted for the lunch special which included large, but I assume smaller than dinner portions, of popular hibachi items. We both ordered chicken and were surprised that for only $7.50 our entrees included both soup and salad along with the typical protein, rice, vegetables and white sauce. The food arrived quickly even though the restaurant was busy for a midweek lunch and it hit the spot for our Japanese craving. It did take a little while to receive our check, but this isn't due to a lack of attentiveness or friendliness by the staff, but instead the volume of other diners. I anticipate going back to Kumo so I can try their sushi selections or if I ever want a quick hibachi fix. read more

Don't judge a book by its cover. A coworker and I were in town for a business trip and looking for a place to eat. Hibachi sounded good to me, and sushi sounded good to him. I expected to have teppan grill, but they just bring the hibachi out to you (totally fine because it's great). Our sushi was really good, especially the Chattanooga roll. We had hot saki and some drinks, but the service was really great. Not the best area, from what I could tell, so it was a bit deceiving when our driver pulled up in front of the restaurant. The restaurant is in a strip mall next to Aldi. It had good reviews, so we tried it! Won't be back. I got the steamed gyoza which was steamed in the microwave behind the sushi bar. Yuck. The soup and salad were probably the best part of the meal. Next was the American dream roll. The "crunchy crab" on top was not crunchy but soggy. The inside was not very tasty. It was very fishy and had no raw fish in it. The steak hibachi was gross too. The steak was mediocre, which I kind of expected, but the rice was disgusting! Really good, reasonably priced sushi. The unagi was especially nice. The service was inconsistent, but I can't imagine finding better sushi nearby. Good for dinner if you're doing tourist stuff in the Chattanooga area. One complaint...their vanilla ice cream was a paper cup of "vanilla flavored ice cream." The kind with the paper lid that we used to get in school. I don't expect anything great dessert wise at a sushi place but come on. I could have eaten about 3 orders of them and been fine. I also ordered an Amazing Roll and a Yellowtail Scallion Roll. They were pretty good, but not the best I've ever had. I was welcomed into a very empty dining room as to be expected for an early dinner at 4 p.m. I ordered the Teriyaki Bento box which came with teriyaki veggies, fried rice, 2 veggie spring rolls, 6pc California roll, a house salad and two sauces. I thought it was a really good portion of food for the price (12.99). The vegetables, rice, salad, and spring rolls were very good but the California roll was really dry. The Avocado in it looked fresh but the rest of it seemed like it had been sitting for a long time. The wasabi and ginger were also dry. Overall the flavors were really really good. Service was ok but the language barrier was an issue and was an issue for other customers too. The dining room and restrooms were very neat and clean. It is decorated nicely but not really a date night kind of place as there isn't very much privacy. Its more of a place of convenience.
