Terrible customer service. I went on my lunch break here to grab food. I do it pretty regularly for lunch here. I ordered chicken tempura rolls. I get this roll EVERYWHERE. And it's always made the same. If you google a chicken tempura rolls it says it's tempura chicken, avocado, and cucumber. I always ask no cucumber so I get only chicken and avocado. When I say down after driving there to pick it up I go to eat it and it has shredded lettuce in it. Never seen that before. Called to let them know there was a mistake. The girl on the phone said that's how they've always made it. I explained there is no where on the menu that specified a specific way of making these that would be special to the location vs the standard way of making it. I told them I wasn't going to be able to eat this. I'm autistic and I can't handle the texture or I'll throw up. The manager did not care so I guess it just sucks to suck. This was a restaurant I constantly walked by and was on my list of places to try. My friend and I decided to have an early dinner one day around 5PM. There was only 2 other parties so we were seated immediately. The overall look of the restaurant was very clean and quiet. We both ordered the hibachi dinner (I got the chicken and filet mignon combo and my friend got the filet mignon and lobster combo). We waited around 10 minutes before the chef came out to serve us. It was a standard hibachi experience. However, the food was not good at all. Every dish was completely drowned in sauce and was too salty to enjoy. There was no palette cleanser and we found ourselves constantly reaching for water. Both my friend and I had a difficult time finishing our food. Additionally, the meats were cooked first and by the time it arrived on our plate, it was overcooked. My friend's lobster was tough to eat and we both came to the verdict that the food was not good. Although we had a great laugh when the chef was tossing cucumber into our mouths, this is not a place we would return to again. I probably won't be going again. My friends and I frequent it often, so I'm a little shocked at the way things went down last night. For starters, we always share a hibachi dish (the most expensive on the menu). I had bariatric surgery so its a waste for me to order all that food. We are always okay with paying the extra. Out of the times we've ordered it, this was the first time they only bought out one soup. That didn't bother me because we had a sushi roll coming and I didn't want to get full on it. So, we didn't say anything. It was just odd. This is the kicker...One of the young ladies at the table asked if she could "cut her food" because it was her birthday. The chef said yes. I'm not sure why with all that is going on between covid, the flu and everything else, they would let this go down. So, she's standing behind the grill flinging her long hair around shaking it around over the grill. I got up and said something. They made her tie it up. Fine. But she's touching the cutlery. First of all, she didn't wash her hands when she went back there and now she's playing in her hair. I've had enough at this point. It's time to go. We paid for our roll and left. After an hour plus of waiting they offered to move our table. To where? It was packed. To wait another hour? God no! Last time I came here 10 years ago there was metal in my sons hibachi noodles! Literally a piece of metal! My fiance and I are huge sushi fans and noticed that there is a shortage of good quality sushi in New Haven. When my fiance said that she finally found a sushi spot that was at least decent, I was a bit skeptical but decided to join her and her friend to try Kumo Hibachi. We decided to go after 4:30 PM for their daily 50% off sushi and rolls (50% all day Sunday). I was warned by my significant other not to order the uni but to order the more traditional rolls such as spicy ahi and tamago. I placed a handful of orders ranging from spicy ahi to dragon roll. My fiance ordered her usual all-things-ahi (e.g. spicy tuna, tuna and avocado, maguro, etc). and was very pleased with her order. I do have to agree that among the other sushi restaurants in New Haven, the quality of Kumo's is above average. The fish is fresh and the rice to fish ratio is about 2:1 unlike other places that try to fill a patron up with extra rice. I came here twice when I was in New Haven for the summer. Both times we came with a large group for half priced sushi. Any place where I can get a cucumber roll for $2 is fine by me. The sushi my friends all ordered also looked amazing, and the shrimp tempura was good. The other reviews criticize the service, but we had no issues. Upon arriving, the hostess gave us our menus and said "hurry up and make your selection, it is a Saturday night we are very busy". We didn't even have time to look through the menu. Being rushed from the start was the first strike. Secondly, my fiancé ordered a glass of their plum wine on their list of specials and it tasted old and fermented, when she asked the waiter if this wine could be replaced with another choice, the waiter said "yes I can get you something else but you still have to pay for this one". A glass of wine that has probably sat out opened for a period of time, the customer MUST pay for? Strike 2. Our hibachi chef was also very lackluster. He cooked our food on a high heat so it could cook faster, didn't clean the grill after, served us and moved on to the next table where he did tricks, sang to the table and also told jokes. It was very noticeable that there was a difference of effort. The third and final strike came about 15 minutes into us eating. The server came over 4 times within 15 minutes asking us if we were finished and if we wanted to go boxes. Nobody even made a dent into their meals. It was very uncomfortable. And a bonus strike came when it was time for the server to collect the bill. We split the bill amongst the 7 person party, the appropriate amount of cash was given as well as debit cards to place payments on. The server shouted loud enough for the entire restaurant to look over at us "NO THIS ISNT RIGHT, YOU HAVE TO PAY FULL BILL". As if we were trying to short change the establishment. We went over the numbers with the waiter over 7x, showing her that we had the correct amount and in silence she apologized. This was the worst restaurant experience I've ever had. Being the only table with patrons of color, I couldn't help but feel neglected and ostracized. For the food to be overcooked and have minimal flavor, the service matched this 0/10 effort. Kumo New Haven should be shut down and reopened into an establishment that wants to put maximum effort into cooking great dishes and treating any and all PAYING customers equally. I wouldn't eat at Kumo New Haven again if I was paid to. read more

First time at this restaurant for my brothers birthday, he's 8 and loves hibachi! I had a reservation for 15 people at 6:30. It is now 7:30 and the chef still isn't at our table on a monday night with no other tables occupied at the restaurant. I have 6 other kids under 10 with me and ordered 10 kids meals I asked for another kids meal for me because It is too much food for me to eat as I am a small person. I understand the kids meal is for the younger crowd but I was already ordering over 150$ worth of food. The waitress rudely stated that "i can eat the food tomorrow" when i asked to speak to the manager they were not compliant. I have eaten here many times over the years...specifically for the half priced sushi, which is now a staple on their menu. Even the specialty rolls are half priced, which is a steal! I LOVE the treasure island app...yummy tuna, salmon and yellowtail wrapped in a layer of sliced avocado with some sauce and tobiko on top...so good! Have tried most of their specialty rolls and love them all. Some of the more basic rolls are pretty standard and plain but can't complain for $3-$4 each! Hibachi is good too, although I usually go for the sushi and sit in the regular dining room. One complaint is the slow service. Most times I have visited, there are only 1-2 servers covering the 15 or so tables...although when I visited more recently, they were attentive...almost too attentive, even tried to snag our plates before we were finished. So, I guess it just depends on the night and how busy they are. Either way, I plan to continue to eat here on a regular basis. Atmosphere is pleasant...hibachi room (noisy), bar area (classy/upscale feel) and dining room has nice couches and large tables for groups. Although there were plenty of tables available it was clear the restaurant was understaffed for handling the amount of customers they did have. I admired the hustle of one of the waitresses, literally running around the restaurant, but for the most part I feel like the staff could have handled things better. My main issue was that when waiting to be seated, staff members were walking by without acknowledging anyone who was waiting. Not even a head nod or a "we will be with you in a few". Once seated again you felt like you were completely forgotten. The redeeming quality of the restaurant is the food. Once we finally were served I did feel like the fish was of good quality. Hello Yelp, My family and I went to Kumo for my dad's birthday. The rule was "Do Not Tell Anyone It's My Birthday or You're Stuck With The Bill," so unfortunately, we cannot comment on any birthday festivities. However, we all agreed that this was a sub-par hibachi experience and are jointly contributing to this review as we drive home. We frequent hibachi and look forward to all the tricks. And honestly, my dad goes overboard in befriending the chef - he LOVES the experience, sometimes to the point of embarrassment. This, however, was not a Hibachi Experience. No sake stream? No choo choo train? No highly competitive veggie toss? No egg roll? No jokes? Even the food wasn't high-effort, there weren't any eggs or veggies in the rice. One star is taken off just for lack of onion volcano. My sister says this review is too long, but we will press on because we need you to be informed. The only skill involved in this cooking was knife banging. Knife banging? As my brother said, this was like Fast Food Hibachi. No tricks, no fun. I've tried their hibachi a few times and have always been satisfied, but I go back time and time again for their sushi. I do tend to order the same few rolls, but this past weekend I went with Meredith F., her fiancee, and friends of theirs and we all tried new rolls. We started off with an order of shumai (yummm!) and something with squid, which I didn't try. For sushi, we ordered: - Red Dragon (spicy tuna & cucumber topped with avocado, tobiko & tuna) - Crazy Tuna (spicy tuna & crunch topped with black pepper tuna) - Spicy Lobster (eel, cucumber, mango topped with spicy lobster & crunch) - Angel (spicy lobster, shrimp & banana tempura, wrapped with soy paper & mango sauce) - Godzilla (deep fried spicy tuna & avocado topped with caviar, scallion & eel sauce) - Spicy Tuna - Spicy Yellowtail - Veggie While all were delicious, my favorite was the Angel Roll. I've never had sushi with banana tempura in it before. It was similar to my favorite roll at Mikado in Middletown (the Sexy Roll), like that roll, it was so sweet that it should almost be dessert sushi. The men in our group also ordered some sashimi, which I also didn't try this time since I'm not a fan.
