So yes, if you're one who likes to just leer at chicks from the sidelines or stare into the bottom of your G&T while your friends all tweet about it then by all means, make your way to pretty much any other bar in Austin. But if you like kicking some ass at giant versions of childhood favorites like Connect Four and Jenga or playing vintage arcade games and skee ball all for free, well then you've found your mecca. We headed to Kung Fu Saloon on a Sunday afternoon, unaware of the bloody mary bar and the mimosas on special. We were pretty amazed at the number of people there. It felt more like a Friday night at 11pm than a Sunday afternoon at 3pm. Things I liked... Free skeeball? Oh hell yeah! And it didn't stop there -- they have a giant connect four game, a large jenga set, pac man tables, etc. You name it, they had it. If it wasn't so busy, I'd have snatched up the Scrabble board for a game with our mini-group. Things I didn't like... Too many people for a Sunday afternoon. I don't know about you but standing up all night is one thing, but Sundays should be more relaxed. There was also a bar fight - hey, it happens - but this went on for several minutes and nobody from the staff did a single thing. I found it pretty tacky that it was left up to fellow (and unrelated) patrons to pull the dudes apart. Toward the end of our somewhat brief stay at Kung Fu's, the crowds did seem to die down. I'm guessing this is in connection to the mimosa special ending. So perhaps there are times when this bar is a little less crowded and a bit more manageable. read more

Its playtime for Adults! The place has great old school video games, foosball, skeeball, jenga and a full bar. What more could an Adult want?..... Oh, yes.. Music! Im sure the music depends on the night, but Saturday night was great. A lot of old school music that increased the energy of the place. Everyone was dancing and singing along. The staff is also super friendly and fast. It might be crazy busy but you can get a drink easily. My brother and his wife raved about this bar as we decided where to grab a quick drink ( in the mood for a Bloody Mary). We walk in to the empty bar and the bartender immediately yells out " ID guys ". We proceed to order as the bartender has a very profound "fuck off" face on. He then tells us he has no zing zang and doesn't even try to offer an alternative or any customer service at all. Also after reading what another bartender did do the El Pason (manslaughter) a couple of years ago .... Okay, so maybe I experienced this bar on a bad night because most of the other ratings are good. I went on the 4th of July for my birthday and here is what I thought: Pros: Awesome arcade games. My favs being Ski Ball, Joust and Mortal Kombat. Giant Jenga games setup outside on patio Met a couple genuinely nice people. Cons: Rude bartenders...arrogant. This is where my Sorry-you-got-laid-off happy hour was hosted. It was 5:30 pm on Friday night; there should have been more than one bartender. It sorta took a while to get drinks. Once there was another guy behind the bar, things ran much more smoothly. This was a little dramatic and annoying. I think around 7, we were bum rushed out of our table by management & bartenders. It would be one thing to politely tell us that the "DJ" needed the space for the table, but it's another when chairs start getting moved without warning. One bartender sets up another table for us in the back and another guy shows us to another set of tables. Then, I think this random lady or a bar manager got angry because some tables had to be reserved and just wasn't very professional. But we had a good bartender, next round was on the house. We had shots of a redheaded slut minus the jager with whiskey, which I was informed is called a Royal F*ck. It was appropriate that that particular shot was what was toasted to me. Skee ball was fun, but only one unit worked and there weren't many balls to try to use the other units. I didn't get to play any video games cause seriously who has that many quarters available? Would have played shuffleboard but you have to hover in order to get the next game. I'm not a hoverer. Overall, good time, fun place. Would definitely go back, but I just don't think it's God's gift to bars. read more

I was anticipating much, much more. The website describes Kung-Fu as having a "relaxed atmosphere," but the space is uncomfortably tiny, with the majority of it being taken up by the massive bar and douchey-looking bartenders. When I go to a "Kung-Fu & Arcade" themed bar, I am expecting nerds, couches, and maybe even a D&D table. But, no, this joint is basically a "trendy" sports bar with a couple of shitty arcade games. This is a place for people who want to get wasted on dirty 6th, not for people who want to relax, have a pint, and play vintage arcade games. The website boasts about 17 games, two of which are worth playing or even playable at all. My boyfriend and I waited for the drunks to stumble away from the three lanes of Skeeball so we could have a go, but we decided it wasn't even worth the wait. The Donkey Kong machine was faulty on the jump button, so it was nearly impossible to play. The machines here are so horribly mistreated by the sloppy patrons and are shamelessly neglected by the staff. Save your quarters for a place like "Pinballz," or just head over to one of the "Game Over Videogames "locations. Game Over has a couple arcade games that you can play for free! read more

Whoever opened Kung Fu had a great concept on paper - unfortunately they failed to execute it well. The idea is an upscale bar with classic video games and skee ball in the back. Yes, there are some classic video games in the back (Joust, Street Fighter, Track and Field, etc), but the problem is that every one I played had controller problems that prevented the game from being enjoyed. Seriously, hire an arcade repair guy to get in here and fix these things! The skee ball is free, although they have the super short alleys so they aren't as much fun as the classic ones. They have what has got to be the shorted shuffleboard table I've ever seen - serious, this thing is probably 8 feet long at the max (after playing on the regular length one over at Lavaca, this just seems like a joke). The bar is nice, pretty upscale, and has a good feel to it. Traffic flow around the bar could be better - it can be pretty difficult to move around this due to the layout. The patio is huge and definitely worth checking out. Huge selection of draft beers for a place like this, along with plenty of booze. If they can get the games fixed and expand the selection, I think this would still be a really fund place during the afternoon or before the crowds settle in at night. You couldn't even get to most of the games without asking people to move out of the way. Single guys - asking a hot babe to move so you can play Joust definitely won't earn you any sexy points. Kung Fu is TOO great if you ask me. They are always busy when I go. Even on Sundays most of the women are decked out in high heels and pearls. There is always a line at the bar, I never get an itemized receipt which is a pet peeve of mine, and there is always some loud ass obnoxious frat boy yelling about something. Lay off the pickle shots brah. But the thing is, it's a good bar. There are arcade games, it's very spacious, and they have a sweet patio. It's the clientele that are irritating and I don't usually have a good experience with the bartenders. On a Friday night, I feel like the men are just preying on the drunk girls. Visiting from out of town, I was a little skeptical given the name. What's a girl to expect? This place is definitely the bomb dot com. They have tons of retro video games and free skee ball! The drinks are reasonably priced and they have many tv's to catch the games on. There seemed to be ample seating. The crowd was mixed and we had a great time. Holy crap, best name ever. You almost have to ninja-kick your way through the front door of this place to live up to its name. Since we were buzzing from Austin's finest selection of Captain Morgan, this type of dynamic entrance was not a problem for us. They have skee-ball, shuffle board, and a ridiculously awesome selection old school arcade games including Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat 3, and....wait for it....NBA JAM!!! After spending an hour or so dunking on people with the unstoppable old school Cavs duo of Mark Price/Brad Daugherty, I spent the rest of the night yelling "NAIL IN THE COFFIN!" and "HE'S ON FIRE!" at random strangers. Pretty cool venue with a good mix of people. A little pricier than other places in Austin (can't expect $1 well-drinks everywhere I guess). Kung Fu Saloon just swept my leg (...I know...please keep reading, it gets better!). My friends and I went to Kung Fu Saloon on a Sunday night, and this place was kicking. There were tons of people there of all legal ages. And, though the place was packed, it wasn't packed so much that I couldn't move around. Plus, I didn't have to wait to play the games I wanted to play. Though there are plenty of games there for you to enjoy, the ones that stood out for me were skee ball, Street Fighter II, Shuffleboard, giant jenga, and colossal Connect Four. The beer was cheap ($2 Lonestar on draft); the bartenders were friendly, and the music was eclectic. They played house, hip-hop, Sigur Ros. I'd recommend this place for anyone who wants more than just the regular-bar experience. It's never too late to get your butt kicked by Ryu or to topple over large jenga pieces. read more

We recently moved to Austin and found Kung Fu Saloon a short walk from our new place. The people that work at this bar is what really makes it special, they're all very laid back and make you feel right at home. I've heard a few people complain that some of the video game machines don't work as well any more. The idea here is really a throwback to an 80's arcade and that means having older machines that you really can'y buy any more. If you want high-end video gaming go to Dave and Busters, if you want a relaxed bar in Downtown Austin that will make you feel a bit like you're back in 1985, this is the place. Bonus points for having a nice outdoor area as well. read more

This place is awesome!!! Had one of my best nights here on my Memorial Day Weekend vacation in Austin! Drinks here are superrr cheap!! But maybe because I'm used to paying crazy prices in places like downtown San Diego, LA, and NYC, around $15-20 bucks for one drink -__-. We came on a Saturday around 5-7 PM, not sure if it was happy hour, but we got two Jameson and Gingerales for 9 bucks!!! WTF!! And I mean that wtf in the best way possible!! I'm surprised, the drinks here are also cheaper than in Dirty Sixth area (even though that place seems way more dirty and divey). This place is sooo fun! This place would be great if the crowd after 11 pm were different. The bar itself is pretty unique, with old (and newer) arcade and video games lining the walls.. including skee-ball! They also have a nice (completely covered) patio in front. The bartenders are knowledgeable and willing to pour out just about anything you can come up with... even when you're not exactly sure what you want, but have an idea of the liquor and taste you like! Two reasons I give this place 2 stars: the crowd that showed up later on while I was there with a chill group on a Saturday night and the bar stool incident. I arrived with a group of friends around 9 or so. I wasn't looking to go crazy, so I was relieved when I found the bar was fairly empty and pretty chill. We bounced from game to game, and I was able to spend some quality time with my vodka and Ms. Pacman. A few hours later, probably around 11, I looked up and the bar was filling up with hipsters... many of them in onesies... so that upped the douche-factor quite quickly. Then one of the staff took my damn bar stool away! (God knows why.) I was just sitting at the bar, chatting with a friend and the bartender, and then this dude tells me he has to take my bar stool because he has to clear them all out of the bar. I looked around and, sure enough, there were others now standing at the bar, looking awkward because they also had been de-stooled... as if moving the bar stools is really going to make more room for all the hipsters pouring into the bar at that point. Needless to say, I finished my drink and we left soon after. Looking at the reviews, clearly I need to try this place on a Sunday... I don't know if it would make up for the bar stool incident, though. read more

Funday Sunday at Kung Fu? YES PLEASE. Last time I was here was Labor Day Weekend, which made it all the more fun. I'm not really a Mimosa drinker (what guy is?) but at $1 a piece on Sunday, how the hell can you say no? I think I went through about 20 of them. Do you like playing old school arcade games? Scratch that. Do you like old school arcade games for FREE? Um, let's see... I'm a dude and I was born post 1980 so hell yes! They have Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat, Madden, Pacman and a bunch of other great old school games. They also have Time Crisis, Skee-ball and Foosball. Time Crisis completely wasted is a blast. My buddy was hellbent on trying to actually 'win' at the game, meanwhile I'm perfecting my pinpoint accuracy on every innocent bystander I could find. The result? An afternoon of non-stop drunken fireballs, sonic booms and Scorpion "GET OVER HERE!"'s. Can't go wrong. The crowd was very lively, great high energy atmosphere. Caught up with a few friends here on New Years Eve-forgot the name until we talked it through recently. Especially on this night where $100 to get into a place is normal, I liked the freedom to walk on into a not-so-crowded location. I went another night in January and there was a smaller crowd. This could be a negative for some, but my friend and I had fun dancing around. It is way too loud to talk to each other, but that's no unexpected. The drinks were a within reasonable price range and I did not have to wait too long for a game. Crowd was good. On most of my other visits I really enjoyed Kung Fu Saloon. It's a fun enough bar, relaxed, typical but on this particular night I would have preferred to go somewhere else that was a bit more quiet. It is definitely not a place to come if you are trying to catch up with old acquaintances or have an actual conversation. I was not disappointed. The bar itself is pretty dark, with a nice ambiance. Boyfriend had beer, I had wine. Was reasonably priced and a pretty good selection. Best part: Mrs. Pac Man table top game. 4 Stars IF AND ONLY IF you are white. They'll let you in no matter what kind of Jordans, sneakers, ratty flip flops, etc. 0 stars if you are black, hispanic, Arabic, any kind of immigrant or person of color. You will be told you are "ghetto" (EVEN IF you aren't from the 'hood) and that your shoes make you out of compliance with the newly posted dress code---which makes no mention of sneakers at all. This is especially true if you are a person of color AND male. They'll allow black women, or other women of color here. But in terms of dudes, definitely expect some racism. This, in addition to Beer Exchange, run by the same folks who have the "no ghetto" "policy" are probably the only two bars in Austin that feed in to the stereotype that Texans are racist. I happened to have gotten in when the bar was empty during the afternoon---and can tell you that if you are a gamer STAY AWAY. The games cost money, they are in relatively poor repair (like others say), and the drinks are a bit overpricedd. This is Austin. There's no need to waste your time at racist bars that do a poor job at its own genre (of gaming). Go to Recess or Pinballz instead. Anyone who is anti-racism, should never go to Kung Fu Saloon. read more

Pac Man and Street Fighter bring back so many memories that you just can't help but feel a little gitty and nostalgic when your playing. Man, and don't even get me started on ski ball. Happy hour till 9:15pm! Ow ow, it's too bad more places don't believe in having a happy hour run this late.$4 Captain & Coke. And for my friend the pickle queen, she went nuts over the fact that they sell the giant dill pickles here. So two thumbs up from her. Thanks to bartender Ethan who I thought was named Eagle for being super cool. The bar is small and the decor pays tribute to the all mighty Bruce Lee.
