This place is so fucking cool I'm going to drop the F-bomb five times in this review. If you're wondering where the party is on a late night Sunday, it's fucking here. Really, this place was packed to the gills around midnight for their "Sunday Funday" - cheap booze, free games, and the most diverse and eclectic crowd I've seen in an Austin bar. It's loud, it's noisy, and glasses shatter every ten minutes or so. But you know, sometimes that's exactly the kind of fucking place you want to be in with a group of friends. Seriously, when's the last time you saw a pair of ladies holding each other's hair as they're puking in an alley? We've all been there, we've all done that, it's just another part of the Grand Scheme of things. The only reason I'm not giving this place five stars is they were practically giving away the booze, I'm the designated driver, and you're fucking charging me two bucks everytime for a Diet Coke? Go fuck yourself. But on any given Sunday, Kung Fu Saloon is the coolest late night venue in town. read more

Like I said in my last review, not super into los games. However, if they're free... that's a whole different story. We rampaged pacman and moon bounce, skee ball and giant connect four. The dollar mimosas were our fuel and daaaaaaaaaaaaamn those things were strong. The best part about a champagne based drink is that when it's strong - its actually just more champagne tasting. So either way they're delish. We dropped in for those on a Sunday and Sake Bombs tonight. No regular sake bombs though -- they're raspberry liquer and blue moon or pearl sake dropped in ace pear cider. Much more delicious than you generic sake in a miller lite. Service is quick, drinks are pretty cheap and they've got a nice outdoor patio with giant jenga. Drinking for drinkings sake is already fun.... but throw a couple of great games in the mix and you've got a damn good night. read more

Had to check this place out yesterday afternoon since my friend had gone the night before and swore up and down there were no arcade games there. So we strolled over after brunch on a gorgeous Sunday (HH all day!) to prove her drunk ass wrong. Apparently she had just gone straight to the patio the nite before, so daytime Kung Fu was a bit of a revelation for her. Some in our party were tickled pink by Ms Pacman, some turned on by Joust. I am not a gamer and the only one I wanted to play, Centipede, was not working (neither was Galaga). However, I do rock the Skeeball and the Foozball. And all these games are free to play all day on Sunday. Wish they had air hockey so I could school some bitches.... At this point I would say this place is A-OK. More of a 3 star joint. But lemme say the douchebaggery black-holed that third star. The bartenders were overwhelmed and grouchy by the droves of drunk asses breakin glasses on the patio. And speaking of the patio, who wouldn't want to sit outside on a beautiful Austin day and have a drink?? We wouldn't, cause it smelled like the Great Austin Smoke Out out there. The ENTIRETY of the great outdoors could NOT filter that air. Blech. So honestly, about 30 minutes was all I needed here. A little Fooz action, some skee ball and then I was just bored, bored, bored. I've been to this bar a few times because my friends love going there. However, the staff is always so rude. It never fails. The guy at the door (usually the same bitter-faced tall guy) and bartenders have no personality and always seem to have a bad attitude. I don't always expect a smile, but when I'm trying to be nice to you and you look at me like you hate life, it just ruins the mood. During one visit, I even tried circling the bar for every new drink to get a better bartender and fail. Now that I read about the serious incident that happened to a patron from El Paso, I am convinced that Kung Fu Saloon is the worst bar I've ever been to. read more

Damn you Yelp! You totally led me astray! So, here's how this little mistake happened. I was yelping places to get my skeeball fix and Kung Fu had about 200 reviews and a 4.5 star rating. This sounds pretty promising right? Turns out it's not. I'm also going to put this disclaimer out there though, it was totally slammed. Had I gone at noon on Wednesday, this might be a totally different review. I went on a Sunday afternoon hoping to get a little skeeball action since it's FREE. The place was packed, we were standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the other patrons. This took me by surprise considering it was a Sunday afternoon in February. No biggie though, I'm totally down with a good time. Well, until I realized that most of the patrons in the bar were menacingly wasted. I assumed my position in the skeeball line and the girl in front of me was so drunk that she had some sort of spastic eruption every time she 'tossed' the skeeball. It was so graceless in fact, that every time she 'tossed' the ball, everyone within 5 feet ducked in synchronicity. Again, no big deal, I have the reflexes of a cat, I can dodge that. It's even relatively funny when she channels her inner Beyonce and serenades all of us in line to her sweet rendition of Single Ladies. She squeezes out the first three lines of the song before collapsing, on her knees, facing the skeeball machine for a mid afternoon nap, with her head resting on her thighs. Awesome! She's not even the drunkest girl there either. She's the opening act. Then there's the skeeball machine. First I'm stoked that it's free, I couldn't be happier. Until I pick up the balls. They are so heavily coated in alcohol,and bad decisions, that they are sticking to my hand. Allegedly, the girl before me wasn't as uncoordinated as I had suspected, she was trying to release the adhesive ball from her hand. Again, just the beginning of this adventure. The skeeballs themselves were chipped and battered that they roll like legos down the warped and battered lanes and into angular holes. If you manage to nail one of the holes, you may or may not get the points- it's a crap shoot. Sometimes the sensors catch the lego, other times it does, but randomizes the score. This doesn't even annoy me, to adds a playful element of surprise to skeeball. Then there's the guy behind me. Each time I lean forward to roll the ball, he leans forward with me, and then onto me. He's so drunk that his equilibrium is being set to the vertical objects in front of him. When they move forward, he moves forward, when they back up, he clumsily moves backward. Balancing a dude on your back while trying to skee lego's is not as easy as you think. When I ask him to step aside, he just moves behind another guy and does the exact same thing to him. This, turns out, is hilarious. Not mad at all about it, not one bit, for I have a new game. The bathroom. The bathroom. This is perhaps, the biggest bathroom shit show I've seen since my 21st birthday at Oil Can Harry's. The only thing missing from this situation is a pregnant, bald, barefoot Britney Spears. In it there are a handful of different girls, each seemingly trying to convince themselves that they're sober. One girl is leaning forward and backward, gazing into the mirror, probably giving her inner sober person a pep talk. Then there's the girl whose lying on the floor amidst a shower of wet paper towels repeating with laughter to everyone that walks over her, "I'm throwing up, I'm throwing up". To her credit though, she was perfectly correct, and she had a very positive attitude about it. The girls that are coming and going, in a pitiful state of intoxication, have given up entirely on locating the trash can, in which they should be throwing their used paper towels, because some girl is leaning over it. So, that explains the shower of paper towels on the floor. And alas, the creepers. Outside the bathroom awaits a trail of dudes hoping to catch some salmon swimming upstream toward sobriety. I can't speculate about the quality of the drinks or their prices, I didn't stay long enough to even get one, I had to go home and shower. Oh, and allegedly it was the #1 DWI bar in Austin last year. This was the best bar I got to check out in Austin. Giant sized jenga, arcade games, ski ball, awesome crowd, sounds like a bar back home. I walked in and approached the bar. I immediately noticed an attractive woman giving me the eye. Then I noticed her friend doing that same. This was looking good. Then a third came over and demanded I follow her. Now it was getting weird but I like weird! (Austin is suppose to be weird apparently) Sure enough it's a bachelorette party and I suppose they didn't purchase a male stripper. That's where I came in. They proceed to rip at my shirt (luckily I was wearing snaps), take it off, start grinding on me and grabbing me. My friends were laughing hysterically. Afterwards the maid of honor kissed me and told me they "Used me." I told her I didn't mind being used and was glad to help. The drinks were inexpensive, everyone was having an excellent time and we all partied the rest of the night away. Fun things to do, good drinks, televisions on the wall and loved the crowd. Yelp has kind of turned me into a huge nerd....in the best way of course. I find myself like a little kid on Christmas every time I try out a new place just waiting to rush home and tell all my "yelp friends" about it. But shhh, don't tell anyone. Chuck Norris doesn't go to this bar, he IS this bar. Which is one reason this place is destined for success. First of all, skeeball is like the new pool. They have 3 lanes of it for FREE. Second, this is every guy's dream come true. They definitely cater to the 12 year old inside of you that always wanted a bar with arcade games as tables and all of the classics you remember. Thirdly, free shuffle board, enough said. And last but not least, SCRABBLE. I ended up playing scrabble with two random guys at the bar and it is surprisingly fun when drinking. (super nerd? i know. dangit.) The bartender was INCREDIBLY nice and we were instant friends. He told me the secret about the parking lot next door to the bar and how it is FREE on weekdays. I think that I may want Kung Fu Saloon to be cooler than it is with the locals. We were here on a rather empty night and I loved it thanks to the old-school video games, ski-ball, buckhunter, sake shots, 8 bit drawings on the wall, and friendly service. However, I'm afraid that with the red-hued backlit bar and swanky lounge furniture this place may be too clubby on the weekends to be truly cool. And that's just a shame so I hope I'm wrong. Even if the place existed solely on it's own, sans legend, sans long and drawn out lean-into-the-honeymoon buzz, this was a trip worth taking. There's been the clatter of a new opening happening on west 6th, and the interest has not been inconsiderate: there would be video games, they said. There would be karate. But what we didn't know upon entering would be the best part. We wandered in curious and exited exultant, at least in part to the hearty and hilarious greeting of the manager, who, if you're keeping score at home in deference to recent late night television turmoil, remembered Jefe from, well, the fact that Jefe looks like his brother. Find that dated J Blacks review for a real hoot, but know on this night that the whole retelling went down like a family reunion of the best kind. Shared experiences, good cheer, and new friends: ya can't beat that, really? And even if you can't, Chuck Norris can. read more

Yes, yes YES!!! Finally, a bar on West 6th that I can get excited about. Hell, I'll go even further and say this place is now my second favorite bar in all of downtown!!! (Second only to the Booty Bar and mostly because they have the best dance dance this side of Lady Bird Lake, holler!) One might ask what could possibly elicit so much enthusiasm from someone. Well, I'm glad you did, for my reasons are many. I'll make a list: -Skee-Ball!!! Yes, three lanes and they're free. Who cares if the scoring doesn't work very well and sometimes the balls get stuck! A friendly member of the staff saw the problem, and came by to fix the situation. (Jersey Shore reference- fist pump if you caught that!) -Shuffleboard!!! Also FREE! Crazy, I know! And the patrons seem to rotate out, or get distracted by other games, quickly enough that everyone can score a turn. -Friendly staff is always worth mentioning. Sometimes when you're in a slightly pretentious area like West 6th you assume you're going to get snooty service. Not the case here; the staff seemed very cool. The space is very open, there are TONS of other arcade games to play and even some sit down tables with Mrs. Pac-Man and Galaga. The music was really fun, too. I heard stuff from MGMT all the way to Lil' Wayne. Aww jeah! Also worth noting- the clientele sports less popped collars and mini skirts than most other West 6th street bars. (That's certainly a plus in my book.) I definitely see repeat visits to this place in my future, and if you haven't stopped in yet, do it! Just save a round of skee-ball for me. read more

If you were born in the 1970s or early 1980s then chances are you spent some time in an arcade or at Showbiz Pizza. This was the era before video game consoles were a household staple, where people had to leave their house for their video game fun, where playing video games meant standing up. For those of you who experienced and enjoyed such a thing Kung Fu will probably be your cup of tea. Yes, Kung Fu is a bar. They are on West 6th and serve all the usual alcohol and beers you can find in the area (one small problem: no fresh oranges for the Blue Moon beer). But what sets them apart is their authentic, 1970s/1980s arcade games. They have tons of them. And they have jumbo sized Jenga. The best thing they have *drum roll please*: FREE skee ball. I play in a competitive skeeball league (sniff, stretch). This is the one of the main reasons why I have been to Kung Fu w/ friends several times is to practice on their free skee ball machines. Thanks to Kung Fu I have been able to sharpen my skills and build my rep as a skeeball master, where people ohhh and ahhh and ask how did I get so good? At least in my dreams it appears that way. Me: [Stumbles away from the Skeeball lanes] Bartender: 'All but one of the arcade games are free today.' Say wha? 'Oh, and it's happy hour all day, too.' So goes a typical Sunday afternoon at Kung Fu: $4 for a tall glass of mixed-drink-of-your-choice, no quarters in sight and enough rematches of Dig Dug, Donkey Kong, Street Fighter, Joust, Galaga and Skeeball to last longer than you probably intended to. Bartenders were in good spirits, trees were a'blooming, Waterloo records carried the silliest Muppet pins and the sun was shining at that point. What next? Great concept, poor execution. The games are always broken. If they're working, they have controller problems. The Buck Hunter is ancient. If you're going to have a new game, have a new, working version. The bar, overall, looks like Prague and a warehouse collided. This place is full of popped collars. I've been twice and left within 15 minutes both times. Inexplicably, there is sometimes a DJ there. Why have a DJ at an arcade bar? The air should be full of the sound of an ARCADE. I've been here a lot. Usually I've experienced good service, decent crowds, and good drinks. Yes the music is loud, yes its filled with frat boys for the most part, but that doesn't really bother me. I usually get a table outside, preferably with the giant Jenga and shoot the shit with friends. Last time around, we were getting rounds of shots for each other. I asked the bartender if he could make us 5 buttery nipples. He just shook his head in a No and proceeded to go about and serve other people. If he said something like, "I'm sorry, but I don't know how to make it" or "Let me see if any of the other bartenders knows how to make that shot." I wouldn't be as disappointed. But he just shook his head and went off. But for the most part, this place is ok, with the arcade games and mixture of old school music and new music. My favorite bar in Austin, hands down. They have something for everyone here. The bartenders and staff as cool AF. The music is always on point, and there's usually a DJ. They have all of my favorite liquors. There's always hot girls and nerds alike. And motherfucking Skee ball. I love this place. They have a great heated outdoor patio (misted in the summer) with Giant Janga, giant connect 4, and a photo booth. I have always met fun and cool people here. I miss living in Austin purely for KF. I know at some point it will be difficult to walk into Kung Fu Saloon without getting poked in the eye by an over-starched, improperly-positioned collar, but I'm hopeful that the open, airy feel of this new bar will remain. I like the spots with the big oval bars in the middle of the room. It means I'm never far from my Maredsous... on draft. Or Chimay. Or any of the other 20 beers they have on tap. With a dozen or so stand-up and tabletop vaults of arcade lore to entertain, as well as shuffleboard, skeeball and the randomly placed checkers, backgammon and boggle, there's plenty to do here when that girl that you thought was totally into your pink Tubbs-esque Polo starts chatting up the ultra Mod Vespa rider with the highwater jeans and ironic T-shirt. I really hope Kung Fu keeps it's laid-back vibe 'cause I can see a lot of Galaga and Joust in my future. read more

Pretty cool place aside from the twat-faces that its loaded with. I mean, what suburb do these generic people come from?? They have some good beers on tap and a decent patio. SKI BALL!!! Now, you can't only rate a place 4-5 stars because of ski-ball. This I know. However, it is a hell of a thing to have in your bar. I mean come on. That's bad ass! This bar has a bit of everything you want. The West-6th crowd, parking in a reasonable distance other cool bars to walk to and food on the corners. Not to shabby. This place is only enhanced by the total Lack of Hipsters. Oh, I'm a fan all right. At least I'm a fan of them on Sundays, the only time I've ever been. Free games, $1 mimosas (reasonably strong, definitely stronger than Opal's across the street), an impressive selection of pickled goodies for the bloody mary I'd never dream of actually drinking, and a FREE hot dog buffet courtesy of Man Bites Dog. I can dig it. For sports fans, the place is totally empty during football season and they have a different game on each of the 4-5 screens. Apparently well drinks on a normal night are $4, which is cheap for the area but nearly twice the price of my standard drink at Bender Bar. I'll stick to Sunday mornings, and I'll stick to it quite often. Could use another bike rack up front, but I don't know if that's on them or on the city. Someone get on that, please. read more

Fun, Fun times with a slight identity crisis after 11P. If Dirty Bills and J. Blacks hooked-up one night this could be the offspring. This place is great new place in what is becoming the crowded set of W6th Street bars. Laid back fun with enough space for comfortable conversation. The Retro arcade games add to the myriad of social interactions one could have here. We went as a group of 10ish on a Saturday night recently and found access to space and to the bartenders ample even though the place was crowded. Oddly, as the night went on, the crowd seemed to shift from groups having fun with each other, interacting at or near the games, to the typical W6th "See and be seen bar." This says more to the scene in Austin than the location, but having a new different place to enjoy a weekend night with your circle of friends is Welcome on W6th. read more

Or at least, that's what it feels like the morning after a visit to the Kung Fu Saloon, a place where you're more than likely to engage in sake bombing, skee-balling, Buck Hunting, and various other forms of debaucherous fun. With a menu offering up a plethora of sake-dropped-in-beer-spiked-with-booze drinks, there's no question that a stop here can cause things to go sideways quick. Fun fun fun!! This bar is a great place to just hang out, socialize, or, on Sundays, watch the NFL games with $1 mimosas. :) The scene: filled with a mix of people and the crowd tends to lean towards the hip, eclectic side...all good people, though. The "it" factor: all the fun, old-time video games you used to play as a kid, like Caterpillar, Mortal Kombat, Donkey Kong, & Skee Ball...and not the PS3 versions, the actual old-school video games like the arcades had. It's awesome! Some of the smaller games, like Caterpillar, are actually made into tables where you can sit to drink and play. Besides the arcade games, there's also a ginormous connect-4 game and an over-sized version of Jenga on the patio...all of this equals lots of fun times waiting to be had! Drinks are pretty good, too; full bar available. While it isn't a make-it or break-it scenario, the 2 reasons for 4 stars: every time I've gone there, the bartenders are not very friendly appearing. They have the look that everyone talks about as the "east coast look": "I have a seemingly cold demeanor because I'm too cool to care" look. They do give excellent service and keep the place flowing with drinks on demand, I'll give them that, but not the friendliest-appearing people ever, so don't think it's the place for open-arms greetings. Second, they don't serve any food. I do understand the lack of food for the evenings/nights, as they are a bar, however, when it's NFL Playoff Sunday and you have large screen TVs everywhere for the game fans, wouldn't it be a given that these football fans usually are accompanied by an appetite? Food and football fans definitely go hand-in-hand. I definitely like hanging out there and the games will keep pulling me back...so, anyone want to challenge me for a skee ball game?? ;-) read more

This place reminds me of a fancier Barcadia in Dallas... although I didn't see any life-size Jenga anywhere. I'm totally in love with the free skee ball though, and I saw Connie C shoot Buck Hunter like she hunts deer on her weekends. Crazy! The bartender was great. Efficient, friendly and helpful. And although their kitchen had closed, they allowed us to bring in Gatti's from next door. Score! The tables near the bar with old-school games are genius and provide hours of endless entertainment. This place needs to be closer, or this relationship will never work out. On one of many visits to Austin, I finally hailed a pedicab & yelled Yo Home to Kung Fu. I do not recommend walking if you are on the main drag of 6th Street, it's farther than it looks and while under a mile, a drunken overzealous attitude will not keep your heels happy walking uphill. So, we rolled up (literally) about 930 on a Tuesday night. There were less than ten people inside. Maybe ten if you count the three bar staff. But this observation was an afterthought. My eyes swept past the double sided bar, the brass gong (which was later rung by my drinking partner) and settled upon the glory that is SKEEBALL. Free SKEEBALL! The walls are lined with old arcade games. It was gorgeous. I spent about 45 minutes here total most of which playing games with a few college kids and slamming back a few rum and cokes that were very much rum. I don't know how I ever went out in Austin without this place. read more

Woodwinds are straight gangsta. Speaking of play, the classic arcade games are free during the day of rest. Probably best, especially when your buddy won't stop spamming E. Honda's hundred hand slap on Street Fighter 2. Congrats Gerald, you can cheat like an 8 year old pro. Marry these "I'm sold" points to a quasi-outdoor patio stocked with giant Jenga, checkers and Connect Four, and you'll find yourself anti-aging a decade. Or two. Drunk. God bless Texas. read more

I come only during football season...not that I'm a huge fan of watching football, but during the NFL season, Man Bites Dog has a FREE hot dog buffet set up here on Sundays (starting at noon). Also on Sundays, there's a build-your-own bloody mary bar featuring infused Tito's ($6) and my personal fave, $1 mimosas ($2 for the big ones). And if that's not enough, there are tons of free arcade games (Centipede, Big Buck Hunter II, Pac-Man, skee-ball, etc). I'm pretty sure that's a Sunday-only thing as well. Surly bartender has gotten a lot nicer since my last visit, too, so now this place is pretty much perfect. read more

Excuse to drink acquired. It gets pretty busy and I think the mimosas are done at 4, so you have to get out of bed at a reasonable time to to take advantage of this sweet, sweet deal. Skee ball, pickle backs (for shots) and great music!!! We came here after a wedding and it was perfect:: packed and busy but we played skee ball, danced ridiculously to old school rap and current pop, and took laps around the bar checking out the games and the people. Ok bathroom smelled horrible. And was dirty. Women know, this stinks (pun intended) They were so foul, I dreaded visiting them. I heard both bathrooms (men + women) were bad. We invited some friends to come visit us at Kung Fu, but line was one in, one out.... Overall, love the idea of games, dancing, and fun. Stinky, stinky, stinky. read more

Minus one star because most of the games are not working or in ill-repair. I would think that this would have been fixed before opening, but you are new and I am willing to give you the benefit of the doubt (super kung-fu chop!). The bartender (I only dealt with one) was top-notch. Beers and mixed drinks were cheap and tasty. Tasty because they tasted like beer and a mixed drink. NO! NO! Do not be confused reader! They were not mixed together! That's just crazy! Also, suck it Moon Patrol! I know that you have humbled me in my youth on my Apple IIe, but I thought in my declining years that I could overcome your bullshit logic. However, I was wrong.
