I'm not sure why this place isn't rated higher on Yelp, as it was my favorite bar on the block when we first tried these bars out. Video games with a decent balcony, and they have free game night on Sundays I think. I could seriously hone my skeeball skillz here and then be a 100 point master. I don't normally frequent any establishment on the side of the street anywhere near Kung Fu Saloon. I had a friend in from out of town and let her convince me that it was cool here. She sold me with the retro video games and pickle shots. What I experienced is almost indescribable. I wanted to play Mortal Kombat.. the machine gladly took my money but then one of the sticks was broken .. an employee pretended to try and fix it but didn't so I gave up on that dream. I noticed almost all of the other cabinets were in a state of ill repair shortly there after and gave up on the arcade games. WIth no arcade games to peak my interest I discovered that the only thing to actually do here was giant jenga. Having been reduced to playing crappy board games with very drunk people I decided the best thing I could do was try and get as drunk as possible. The cheap pickle shots weren't that bad, they seemed pre-mixed however and I cant say they weren't mostly pickle. I wouldn't have minded paying a bit more for a slightly stronger shot. Anyway .. I am going to be completely honest here .... I really wanted to hate Kung Fu Saloon and they made it really hard for me to do that. I have lived here for over 4 years and purposely never gone in here. I have seen all the bad press about the dress code issues and profiling that went on. Not cool - so I avoided it and I really just never hang out on that side of downtown too. I recently had a friend that moved into an apartment really close to Kung Fu ... like within walking distance, so when we are hanging out there and get bored one night we found ourselves headed in the Kung Fu direction. We actually hit up a bar across the street first and it was a bit loud there so we decided to go to Kung Fu. I had never been inside before, so when I walked in I was impressed with the games as I had no clue. There is a big round bar in the center of everything. I ordered a gin and tonic and it was delicious. We went back for shots and ended up with a round of pickle shots at one point and they were also delicious. Again remember I am trying to hate this place, but pickle shots are definitely making that hard. Next we decided to go out on the patio and play some of the giant Jenga. Oh man we probably played 10 rounds and had a BLAST! Yes I admit it ... we had a blast. Then we went back in and I got to play some Mario Kart and won twice! Again ... trying to hate and so far unsuccessful. At the end of the night I left thinking welp ... I had fun and didn't want to. So I guess I am fan now, but will likely not admit that too loud yet, just here on yelp only. read more

The Kung Fu Saloon is a bar with a bunch of classic video games, skeeball, brand new digital jukebox, and a bar that is nicely circular all around and not tough to get at. I went on an uncrowded day, and that is probably the best time to go. Tunes in the place are provided by Pandora unless somebody uses the digital jukebox on the wall, at which point it kicks those on, and according to the bartender shows you where your tunes are in the queue. No pool tables here tho, fyi. Not really space for it. I think the Kung Fu is a great idea and deserves 5 stars. I really should not knock it down a star just because during their peak times on weekends, much like Victor and Mark said in their reviews, the place is filled with way more unsavory folks than you'd wish were in there. In fact I almost but not quite wanna say there should be a dude at the door with a velvet rope, keeping out the kinds of people that ordinarily get whisked right into hoppin' places, and instEAD - letting in the other joes who probably know how badass the 8bit Bruce Lee on the outside of the joint is, and may also know, via emulators or age, how great it is to play your choice of 20 classic arcade games on the tabletop units where you can place your drink. DIG DUG! My beverage was nice, the bartender was nice, and I only got my ass kicked by the chick with the hair move in Mortal Kombat 3 times. read more

This seems to be the default place for any group I'm with in Austin. I definitely prefer KFS more for a mid-day visit. I once checked it out with some kick-ass colleagues of mine (Damien S, Kelly S, and Krys S), and it was a laid-back experience. Drinks, laughs and some giant Jenga. I'm not 100% sold on the shoulder-to-shoulder packed house atmo on Fri/Sat nights, but when in Austin... I will say that despite those crazy crowded weekend nights, the bar staff brings their A-game. They sling out drinks ahelluvalot faster than those uppety slow pokes at the W. Jerks. At one point, I overheard a bartender at KFS say, "Man, I want someone to order a drink." He was working so fast and staying on top of the drink orders, he eventually had a short lull. Keep at it, homie. Overall thoughts? It's not really my kind of place. There are far better bars in Austin - true gems with real entertainment ... so I was teetering towards 3 stars, but with fast drink service, good music, games/entertainment and a lively crowd, you can't go wrong with KFS. read more

Is it sad that when someone told me they were on West 6th I had no idea where that was? I thought they meant the west side of 6th street in downtown. But they meant literally West (the street) and 6th street. I was very confused since in all my years of partying in Austin, I had not even heard of this area or even been near it. Well I was very happy when the cab driver knew exactly where this was. When we were let out and entered our first bar, Kung Fu Saloon, my first observation was the crowd was older. It was like the Austin bar scene for the college grads that never left austin but didn't want to deal with the college people in downtown. This place is pretty cool, had skeet ball and arcades in the back. It could have been a cool joint but it was way too crowded. But it's something they're aware of, and really can't be helped due to how old they are. There weren't that many people around on a weeknight, but I guess that means all the machines were fair game. If Pinballz didn't exist, this place might be cooler. A hand full of games around the room is cool, but if you're of a shorter attention span, this place is good for about 40-60 minutes if you expected to come play some games. Everything appeared to be in decent working order. While there are classic arcade games, three skee ball machines, big block jenga, and some shooting games, there is not a pinball machine. They have decent beers on tap. If you want a bar, there are too many in the area to comprehend. If you want an arcade, Pinballz lets you bring your own beer. I love this bar!!! Kung Fu has a nice casual vibe. The bartenders are always quick to take and make your drink order. I love coming to this bar and playing ski ball, and its free double bonus. There is a nice variety of old arcade games throughout the bar. The make your own Bloody Mary bar on Sunday's is really tasty. They have Tons of ingredients to add to spice it up. There's also a great outside area. There are multiple sets of giant Jenga and one large set of Connect 4 outside to play. read more

I am 2983040928% more impressed with the new Kung Fu location than I ever was with their older place. Remember how the bar area used to be slammed because it was in the middle of the room and made it impossible to get around? Well, I do, it was a nightmare and this location went and fixed it! Bravo. We went on St. Patricks Day this year and it was my first time to W. 6th in a long time. I was nervous about the crowds, but even though this place was packed, the line for green beer was short, and they even had extra servers going around taking orders. Hell, we even found a seat, because the patio is huge now! Say what you will about the crowd this place draws, but do try to come here on a off-time to enjoy what they've done with the place. There are still games, beers, and spaces that are comfortable for a hang sesh with your friends. All in all, I'm impressed. read more

But oversized games like Giant Jenga can make even a bar with only Bud/Miller/Coors a fun one. Kung Fu had a few more choices than that, but nothing too extravagant. That being said, I've learned that building and de-constructing wood structures is the most fun thing one can do while intoxicating. I think I might even want to look into becoming an architect. This place has board games everywhere and ping pong and jenga outside. I really enjoyed playing ping pong although it was really cold outside. Some of the games were also missing pieces so we couldn't play them too well. We ended up playing a 2 Vs. 2 boat game of battleship (and ended up losing:( ) but it would have been nice if there were more boats in the box. They also have a random gong they hit occasionally and throw napkins (?) whenever they ring it. Not sure why they do that but it was a bit loud and disruptive but people seemed to enjoy it so maybe it's just something to get used to. read more

I've been to Kung Fu a couple of times now, never at night though. Most recently I went this past Saturday during the day for a UT game. It's easy to get attention at the bar, easy to find tables - inside or out. Pretty good selection of beers on tap. Of course what makes Kung Fu so much fun is the games. Some of them don't work, some of them do. We usually end up on the shuffle board since there is usually a large group of us. I liked it better inside because outside it's right up against the doors and people hit you sometimes...but it's still cool. They also have the Tabbed Out system with Iphones which I think is pretty cool. It's a pretty hip little place. Nice bathrooms too! I don't know what it's like on a busy night, I could see it being a bit overwhelming but my suggestion is go on Sundays! Last time I went on a Sunday it was free for all the games :) read more

A friend of mine and I stumbled upon this ambient lit bar just the other day after eating 2 for 1 burgers at Huts Hamburgers. I loved the art work on the walls of all these kung-fu masters as well as the space invader wall with tea lights at the entrance. The BEST thing about this place was the free games! Free foosball on a Tornado table (although next time I might bring my own foosball ball because the small toy soccer ball was annoying)!!!!!! I am all about free foosball especially when I am notorious for feeding tables too much money & quarters when I am always quickly defeating my opponent :). (it's true). Also - FREE SKEEBALL!!!! Free Mortal Combat, NBA Jam, and shuffle board too!!! I was a happy drinker that night with all the free games :) Lonestars are $2 which is great and they got plenty of room outside and a big window to stalk the people playing the game you eagerly want to play. Free NFL Blitz on Sundays... I'm in! this is the spot you come to mingle get some really cheap but good drinks and enjoy everyone's company while playing some free arcade style games on Sundays. They also have the NFL ticket which for people that are into NFL.. (ME) This is a huge plus!! - let's go EAGLES! Always friendly bartenders but be warned, during the summer time this place gets jammed packed around 1pm or earlier and expect to be shoulder to shoulder while trying to order a drink. They have a nice little patio in the front outside as well which gives some relief of the packed crowd inside. I love the King Fu remodel! It's so much cleaner and bigger than before. There's a nice patio with a ping pong table and extra seating. There are two different bars which I'm sure helps on a crowded day. Of course, there are several games lining the wall inside. Challenge me to Mortal Combat if you see me out! Also, the staff was so friendly! I was there on a Tuesday and the bartenders were ridiculously nice and accommodating to my large group. We split the loaded tots and queso which came out quickly and were delicious. Highly recommend checking out this location! One potential hazard is that the ping pong table faces the street and I've watched on several occasions patrons running to retrieve their ball in traffic... why not just turn the table facing the wall?? read more

I forgot to update this review when I came for New Years in 2011. Saw The Dan Band.. $150 open bar and it was catered. It was one of the BEST New Year's Eve's I have EVER had. So much fun! Ok now jump forward in time. I now live In CT and have been here since October of 2012. This past April I flew back with the boyfriend for a wedding and the first night back we went to Kung Fu. Two words... PICKLE SHOTS! First you take a shot of vodaka then immediately a shot of pickle juice.. it immediately neutralizes the vodka taste. Amazing... Be careful it's good and you could easily do repeated shots because of this and not even realize how many you have done...and then not care..about anything. Are you picking up what Im throwin' down? ha. Anyway, when there Giant Jenga is a MUST. Sooo fun! I have yet to stumble upon something like this in CT. Fingers crossed! read more

We strolled in after dinner looking for a spot to get some cocktails and this place was it. Located on 6th Street, it was smacked in the middle of all the bars. When we first initially came in, it was pretty dead, just my group and a few others. However, within a hour, it was packed. Downside, it got filled with a bunch of young college kids. They have some free games like pinball and skee ball, which are good options if you don't want to spend money on any games. Some of the games like Super Mario Brothers and Galaga were broken. There was an odd smell that seemed to be the result of an attempt to clean a spot on floor. read more

The light brown haired bartender seemed bothered by the mere presence of a patron. She seemed irritated by any and every question we asked and after my friends and I shared the fact that we were in the service industry she responded by saying she would "take that into consideration" in a very condescending manner. King Fu is a typical downtown bar in Austin, if you're going out with friends for drinks, you'll likely be satisfied. However my first (and last) time I went here consisted of me going to the bar to order drinks and being told I had to leave my tab open because of computer system "problems". Because I wouldn't be able to close my tab there would be a 20% surcharge on my card, and I did NOT agree to doing such a thing... Although I CLEARLY protested, the bartender swiped my card and ran a transaction. Before I could ask him if he reversed the transaction he walked away, and took away my drinks. Long story short, questionable business practices and poor service. Be careful when you hand them your card. read more
