First of all if you're looking for this place, the location couldn't be in a worst spot. There is a building and a staircase covering the sign from the street. So I suggest y'all look up juice box or fufu cafe and it's going to be in the same shopping plazas, just across on the other side of the parking lot is Kung fu tea. Ok the lines here are long. And the staff here expect a tip. They have 1 cashier and and usually 1-2 ppl making your drinks. Then cashier also makes drinks to get all the orders done. I like the grapefruit green tea with aloe jelly ( it's different )and the green tea with herbal jelly and egg pudding. It may sound weird but that's what I like. Drinks are amazing! My favorite is Citron tea, it's so good. You should definitely it a try. This is a good place to go to if you want to have a casual hangout with a big group of friends. You can be as loud as you want and they won't mind, haha. However, this makes it hard for you to study here as it can get pretty loud. Very clean environment and furniture. And the worst part? Chinatown location has a 10 dollar minimum to use credit card. Are you joking me. Who in their right mind would get two large drinks for themselves in order to hit the 10 dollar minimum. Absolutely ridiculous. Get with the times - no one carries cash anymore. In fact, I ordered my drink and kindly asked if he would just charge me for the drink at the price stated since I don't carry cash. He refused without an upcharge. Fine. I moved from NYC to Houston last month and was devastated at the fact that I would be losing my beloved Kung Fu Tea. My wife called me yesterday that she saw the Kung Fu tea sign on Bellaire. I saw rainbows and it is glorious *_* The drink: classic bubble tea: I get it with 30% sugar since the regular ones are wayyy too sweet for me. The tea is brewed, no powders used :), and delicious just like the ones in New York. Also another bonus is that everything is lactose free since they use Lactaid. My second favorite is the Yakut green tea which is basically 3 small bottles of yakult in brewed green tea with syrup. There is an option (off menu) to add a small dried plum to give it a more sour-but-sweet note. The red wow and green wow are basically red beans and mung beans crushed up and infused with Lactaid and some syrup. I usually opt for 70% sugar on this one since the Lactaid cuts the sweetness. The setting: big place, simple wooden tables and nice single person couches. Overall pretty simple and clean design. It's their second day open so they are busy with the buy one get one free promotion. Also their credit card machine isn't activated yet so bring some cash. The staff is super friendly but seemed a little overwhelmed since it is their first weekend open. Understandble! The manager is familiar with all the New York locations so I assumed the staff trained there before opening this one in Houston. Overall: just like my beloved NYC locations... So many new tapioca joints have openly lately in Chinatown that it's hard to keep track of, let alone decide which one to buy a drink from. Kung Fu definitely adds a twist to the tapioca experience, in both a good way and bad. What stood out to me the most about Kung Fu when I first tried it's milk tea with tapioca (the most common tapioca drink for those of us who know about its existence) was that the tapioca balls were actually sweet! All of the tapioca I have ever tried was bland. The flavor comes from the drink itself, and we just chew on the tapioca balls for its texture. But Kung Fu definitely stepped up the tapioca game by making their tapioca balls sweet. They also have a very nice lounge area, completed with tables as well as sofas and TV's. Here's the downside. The milk tea is made with powdered milk. You can watch them behind the counter as they scoop up the powder, then fill the cup with hot tea. Yes they have an automated shaker that looks extremely powerful and mesmerizing at the same time, but sometimes you can still taste the powder in the drink... Oh and then you have the owner. An incredibly SASSY and rude guy who loves correcting his customers and shows a nasty temper if you make an order complicated. What I mean is if you ever try to order a drink and ask for tapioca, he will correct you by saying "oh you mean boba?". With a very sassy tone and attitude. Until you correct yourself and say boba. (Boba is another term for tapioca.) Also when you ask for double tapioca, he will give you a dirty glare and whine to himself out loud about how you're taking all their tapioca, until it makes you feel bad and you decide not to get double tap. Now if you're a cute guy however, that's a completely different story. He will give you a VERY big smile and tell you very very nicely that there isn't enough tapioca for double portions. This is a franchised location and it's always packed with trendy hipsters drinking bubble tea and eating snacks, while studying for an exam. The quality of the drinks were pretty good. However, the prices for the bubble tea and their fruit slushes are very expensive. My friend and I ordered 2 medium sized green milk teas with tapioca and a pineapple slush, and the total was a little over $20. No idea why it was that much. Was finally able to order the Red Wow Milk and was sadly not as WOWed as I expected but it wasn't bad. Unlike most places the drink is super milky with a hint of tea flavor. I really felt like I was drinking milk, mixed with condensed milk (iono the milk was sweeter than normal but when we tried to ask for less sugar the cashier said it doesn't come with sugar) boba and red bean added. To my surprise, the boba and red bean is where the flavor is hidden which is kinda interesting. It is like they soaked the red bean and boba in syrup or something sweet, I actually just sucked on a boba and it was like eating a piece of candy! Hands down, the best boba I've had in Houston. Of course, I thought Houston boba in general was pretty dismal to begin with, so this should be taken with a grain of salt. The tapioca here is on the sweet side, but it has the ideal chewy texture that I look for in quality boba (the pearls I've tried at other places like Teahouse are often slimy and unsatisfactory). So far, I've stuck to the basics (milk black tea & milk green tea with pearls), and they've been good. I appreciate being able to modify the ice & sugar amounts in true Taiwanese fashion (I usually go for no ice & 30% sugar). I used to like Kung Fu but every time I get it I want to give it a second chance but I can't. I just ordered a mango slush with strawberry jelly and a Thai milk tea and that the jelly in the slush was literally filled halfway in my drink and in inconsistent chunks especially huge ones that won't even go through the straw. I went home to pour it out in a glass so I can reduce the jelly and it was shocking to see how many jelly were the half the size of a fun jelly cup. I really am a fan! I've been here a few times now and I love the kung fu matcha, or now as they call it, the matcha milk. I really do think it tastes like green tea ice cream, so it hits my good senses. The bubble milk is also another safe bet, my boyfriend gets that and I just want to drink both, but I don't want to be selfish. The first time I went here my boyfriend got the red wow, and I thought that was false advertisement. It was just red bean.. let's just go to bambu then if you're going to get the red wow. That was a waste to me, but I guess the milk is "sweeter." I haven't tried anything "wow" since then. The boba is really good. The consistency is on point, the perfect ball shape and the sweetness is a great additive. Yes, it's just a boba ball, but if you go to any other tap place and you complain about how the boba is squishy, clumped together, basically a mush in your mouth, then you'll understand why the boba at kung fu tea is good. I do enjoy going here, but the prices are really ridiculous. Last time I came, there were no regular cups, so everyone had to get a large. So 3 large drinks, all with boba was around $16. One word. OVERHYPED! I have so far tried three different flavors of milk tea drinks: 1) red bean, 2) ginger, and 3) taro, of which none is remarkably tasty; honestly, they all taste just alright. The red bean in the red bean milk tea is well textured, not overcooked, and not overly sweetened, to my liking. The ginger milk tea is very gingery but a little too sweet. The taro milk tea (regular; no reduced sugar or skim milk or anything) is totally bland though! And, the tapioca balls seem to have been undercooked because of the extreme chewiness. The drink itself was ok, I had no complaints about it which is a good thing. 4 stars The workers were rude though. After I ordered my tea, the cashier was like oh btw it will be an 8 min wait so we can make fresh boba. Uh... ok. Then when they were calling out orders, they actually called out the order number vs the drink (first time I've heard a boba place do this) and wasn't ready for my number but I knew my position in line. When the lady called out the number(which was mine but I didn't know it) I pointed to myself asking if it was me and she shook her head no. That made no sense to me so I dug out my receipt and it was indeed my number. I went to get my drink and she forced me to show my receipt to her which was kinda ridiculous. I understand that you want to make sure it's my drink but there are nicer ways to ask a customer to confirm their order. 3 stars The price itself is kinda expensive for normal milk tea, and you cant use your card unless you pay $10 which would probably be about 3 drinks worth. My go to drink is the Roasted Oolong Milk Tea, good flavor with nutty tones. Their boba is some of the best boba in Chinatown! Pearls are really chewy and not overtly sweet. Now, the cons, this place has a $10 credit card minimum. ALSO always get 50% sugar unless you want to be bouncing off the walls because of the sugar content in their full dosed drinks. Additionally, I don't know about everyone else, but the times I've come here the customer service has been, well sub-par to say the least; one thing they always try do is never specify the drink size, so they automatically charge you a large drink. The best boba ever!!!! After reading all the bad reviews about the owner, I was pretty scared of coming here. But nevertheless, I braced myself for boba! I tried it and it was worth the scare! :-D The boba isn't like anywhere I ever had. It was sweeten and extra chewy so you don't have to chew too much. The tea was amazing!!!!! I don't know what their secret is but this place is the best boba tea ever. Is it worth dealing with the rude owner? yes. He won't ruin your tea experience, trust me. A few tips: You can order your drink very custom with 1. the amount of ice you want and 2. how much sweetness you want. Take advantage of this, especially if you are a picky one. Also the regular guy who takes your order talks pretty fast and can be a bit abrasive and almost intimidating, so be ready with your order. Kung Fu Tea has been one of our favorite boba places in Houston since it opened. We would stop by at least once every time we visited Houston. However, their quality and consistency has been going downhill for the past 6 months. What makes them stand out is their wow milk and their honey boba. Wow milk is made from lactose-free milk so your "lactard" friends can enjoy them too. I get it because it gives an extra kick of sweetness with each sip. The honey bobas are exactly what they sound like. They are sweet and chewy! My go to drink is their Matcha Milk... well, it used to be. For the last 3-4 times we came, their consistency has been all out of wrack. The drinks all came out either extremely sweet or extremely bitter. Asking for different amount of sugar did nothing. Worst of it all, the Matcha Milk now has a bitter aftertaste that just lingers in your mouth, yuck. It almost seems like they completely changed their recipe. For $5, I expected more consistency. Very disappointing. Everything else is just ok, nothing special. At this point, there's no more incentive for me to come here over the other boba places around Chinatown. P.S. He said my total and I handed him my card, then he starts yelling and hitting a sign on the side that it was $10 minimum. I should've left then and there with that nasty attitude but my sister really wanted it, so I added another drink. He then snidely says the new total and takes my card. I'm never coming back ever again. Save your money and support other businesses that actually deserve it. Plus, the drinks suck now; they're really watered down. They don't even deserve one star, but Yelp is kind. read more
