The inconsistencies are noticeable each time, especially if you order the same drink. You can order with an employee or at the kiosk. Continuing to trying as many boba shops as I can in chinatown, I'm glad I tried this one. There's obviously a lot of competition in this area, and so I can see how they all have to be good to stay in business. This one had a poster with pistachio drinks, and I love pistachio. I decided on getting a coffee latte with boba, pistachio cold foam, extra pistachio. It was scrumptious. It was eerily quiet inside considering how many people were in there. This is more of a serious place where they are all on laptops and working during the day. So I don't think I would recommend coming in here with young children, at least not in the afternoon. This was my first time here. I was not aware of how popular Xing Fu Tang is, but I had a great guide who steered me in the right direction! The inside is nice and very clean, including the restrooms. Being that Xing Fu Tang originates from Taiwan, I was excited to try something I hoped would be close to the real deal. The drinks are beautifully presented and it's easy to be sold on ordering when the boba is freshly made in a wok and scooped right in front of you. I ordered the Brown Sugar Milk Tea, which features torched brown sugar, a little zhush compared to XFT's other brown sugar drinks. While you can adjust the sweetness and ice levels for all their beverages, I recommend sticking with full sugar for this one. The first time I had Xing Fu Tang (#1) was in Asia. Whether it was sipping the pearls in Taipei or slurping away in Mongkok, Hong Kong, it was always a lovely time. When it finally came to NYC, I was among the many who lined up in Flushing to enjoy it after many years of not having it. Now that it's in Houston, I am truly stoked to have it as an option. The only caveat is that it's some of the most expensive bubble tea in the city. Up until recently, XFT was only going to be in cities where the demand for boba is great and only in certain communities. In many ways, XFT's presence legitimizes the ever-expanding Asian scene in Houston. That's a high standard that is truly no small feat. And why? Well their operation is like no other boba shop. They make all of their tapioca balls in house and they're so fresh that even I, someone who doesn't even love boba, can appreciate each time I have it. There is a designated person who is just churning brown sugar syrup and others who are dealing with some miscellaneous add on. The ingredients they use for many of their drinks are premium, and thus many newbies to the brand have experienced some level of sticker shock. Their priciest drink at $15 is the gold foil boba milk. At just over half of that is their melona strawberry milk at $8 and the rest of the drinks are in the $6.50-$7.50. The drinks are refreshing and well made, but I think given how price conscious Houstonians are, it will undoubtedly rub folks the wrong way. Overall, the service isn't much to write home about. There were crowds at the beginning but lately it's been a steady flow of folks. I do enjoy escaping the heat and just chilling on their couches and chatting with friends. I do wish everyone would play the fortune game that all XFT's are equipped with, but they need directions and to actually fill the drawers with fortune printouts. Xing Fu Tang is taking the US by storm, and for good reason. I'm going to come out the gate by saying I don't actually call myself a boba fan. But, when I saw the videos and articles hyping this place up because they do it the right way - the Taiwanese, handcrafted way - I just had to come. The space is inviting with plenty of parking, so it's very easy to get to. The area is always bustling with diners and boba-shop-goers, though, which adds to the appeal. Inside, you can see the staff prepping the boba right through the glass, scooping the brown sugar tapioca into nearly every cup. They work efficiently, so you get your drink in reasonable time, despite the popularity. There's a small seating area which is great for small groups - but I'm sure it can get cramped at times. We didn't experience this, though. We ordered the classics: brown sugar boba milk, and matcha boba milk with strawberry tapioca. I got the matcha one with oat milk - and it was just delicious, I couldn't tell that the milk wasn't whole milk. The drinks were perfectly creamy, and the tapioca was the perfect texture: chewy, and full of strawberry flavor. The brown sugar drink my husband got had a much deeper, caramel sweetness that felt very indulgent. The brûléed brown sugar on top created the perfect bitterness to balance the drink. You get what you pay for here, and I think it's more than worth it. I think everyone who wants to experience good boba needs to try a handcrafted boba shop as soon as possible. My friend had this in NY and said all the good things so I decided to give it a try and see what the hype was all about. The drink was nothing close to what I was imagining, maybe because I watched the lady pour a whole cup of milk and just added a little coffee whip on top. According to my friend there was supposed to be more of the coffee whip so to me it just tasted like milk rather than coffee milk. Don't get me wrong the coffee whip was really good but they didn't add the correct amount. A little strange but they weigh their bobas for each drink, so that will take extra time than needed to make their drinks. The decor was really cute and they had a little fortune teller thing on the wall. There weren't any papers in any of the slots but it would've been cool for my kiddos to do. Service was just ok. The doors were unlocked so we walked in without knowing if they're opened or not and after a good few minutes of us looking at the menu someone came out and said they're not opened yet and we need to step out (didn't even apologize), this was probably ~10 mins. I'm ambivalent about Xing Fu Tang. On one hand, I think there are portions of milk tea they do really well. Their pearls are nicely cooked and clearly freshly made, as there's a huge pot where they're scooped out from right in front of customers. The grass jelly has a nice texture and good balance of herbal taste. The oolong milk tea is probably my favorite, as there's the nicely roasted oolong taste with the aromatic aftertaste that's still apparent even with the creaminess of the milk tea. It is quite strong, but I like that the tea flavor really stands up to its milk counterpart and doesn't get lost in the drink. On the other hand, I'm not a fan of the fruit teas with the fruit boba that both boast of quite strong syrupy tastes that essentially overpower the tea. Even with half sweetness, the sweetness is so intense I think it could have been diluted down threefold. Their milk teas are good, their lemon/lime drinks can be excellent (especially in Canada), and at this particular location, they have wonderful friendly service, especially from our BFF Caroline (sorry if I spelled your name wrong), who is one of my fave boba employees anywhere and has a heart of gold. We usually get the milk tea with boba, or any of their fruit or specialty drinks, but not the gold foil drink (who wants to pay $15 for a boba and why are people eating gold). The main put-off about XFT are the prices, and the milk teas are definitely different, a little more premade-tasting than I'm used to, but the drinks are still great, and well worth trying. I do wish they would charge slightly less for boba, and that corporate (in Taiwan) and the US version (HQ in NYC) would get on the same page instead of endlessly litigating and suing and battling embarrassingly (I don't think anyone is completely in the right in this regard), and I tend to side with the US because the Taiwan base has done this same battle with Malaysia in the past, and it shows a pattern of behaviour from them which is terrible for the brand. For me, Canada has it right and is doing a hell of a job with its drinks and locations. Houston is thrilled to have a Xing Fu Tang, and the lovely service and tasty, unique drinks add a lot to one of the best boba scenes in North America. Here are all the bad things about the place: - never pick up the phone for questions about hours/ordering - large is 1.25 extra, regular cup is more like a mini - cashier people never get my order right, sealed vs non-sealed, substituting boba for another topping without extra cost - no ice cost extra - cashier attitude when I ask them to fix my order that they didn't listen and get correctly -not even recognized as an official franchise from Taiwan I've never been to a boba place that didn't offer to fix something when they mess up (some will even remake the drink if it's not to your liking).
