With a menu that has variations of same main ingredients, it's important to be precise before submitting the orders to kitchen. We ordered two chicken katsu curries. We got 2 chicken katsus, sans curry. It was immediately corrected, with no issues. Table next to us seemed to have ordered salmon nigiri and got salmon roll. This was also immediately corrected. Our food was great, and we even got some mochi from the management as a token for the "inconvenience", and we hadn't even complained. I like that management responds to online feedback. Some team meetings between front and back of house will probably result in better communication, and less food comp. read more

This is the best Japanese restaurant in Bethesda. I've lived in Japan and it's offerings come the closest to what you get there. The ramen bowls are excellent, particularly the one with tempora. The curries and the sushi boats are also great. read more

I have been to the Kusshi Sushi up at Pike and Rose and the one in Downtown Silver Spring and loved my experience at both locations. This one in Downtown Bethesda, however, did not quite measure up to the other two locations. We orders Salmon Nigiri, spicy salmon rolls, and an udon noodle soup. The salmon pieces were small, the spicy salmon roll was kind of soggy. The udon noodle soup tasted like someone just threw teriyaki chicken stirfry with udon and water (yuck). The service was slow too despite very few customers in the restaurant on a Tuesday night. read more

Eating a single piece of a roll made me feel like I was in a hotdog eating contest. Also, the version of the website that shows on a phone has incorrect menu information. A lunch special is shown as being available 11:30 AM - 3 PM Monday through Friday, but when I arrived during that time, the server explained that it wasn't available. A miserable experience from the service to food to the consequences of my gastrointestinal lining post dining. Although they offered outside dining, there wasn't any additional ambiance so we opted for an inside table. Surprisingly the sushi wasn't made out front and the bar was highlighted instead. We were excited to pick from the customized cocktails only to be rejected since we had vertical IDs. We were disappointed but seeing how the bartender was chewing gum and had his headphones in, maybe we didn't miss out. =ORDERED= *Miso Soup: saltier than average and the tofu was more firm than the classic silken tofu. Decent amount of green onion but the tofu wasn't my favorite. *Sushi Sampler: came with miso soup, chef selected 9 nigiri and either a tuna, salmon or California roll. While I was initially impressed with the spread, I was severely disappointed with the rice and fish quality. The sushi rice tasted unseasoned and the texture was mushy. The blandness of the rice highlighted how fishy the seafood was. The yellowtail, albacore and salmon were notably unpleasant with the surf clam tasting the best. The tuna roll was a simple maki roll which shared the same boring rice. The nori was soggy with minimal flavor. *Bethesda Roll: poorly made as the rice wasn't evenly distributed around the roll. Some parts were left uncovered and one of the slices didn't have any tuna. *Mochi Ice Cream: despite having an impressive selection, these poor balls were frozen to oblivion. Each order for $9 included three mochi, in which we received vanilla chocolate chip, matcha green tea, and strawberry. The mochi had a strange texture but the ice cream was bearable once we sat around for it to thaw. The service was subpar the entire time and the staff seemed more interested in snacking and chatting behind the bar than checking on tables. After having a negative experience at the restaurant, it followed me home where I suffered from food poisoning. Hanaro Sushi notably gave me the worst sushi experience ever and their food was not representative of balanced Japanese cuisine. read more

One good thing that came out of this pandemic was the discovery of new-to-me independent restaurants. Actually, I did know about Hanaro, but usually avoid Bethesda because of crowds or parking. But with the dine-in restrictions, carry out is the way to go. I placed my order through ChowNow that takes less money from the restaurants' pockets. I ordered enough for two meals. It was so easy! Especially with easy parking right out front. With a quick call, they bring it to your car. EVERYTHING was delicious. Agedashi tofu was great. So were my new obsession, shishito peppers. I didn't get a surprise hot one. The calamari fried in tempura was great, especially with the dipping sauce. It was even better the next day crispier from being in the air fryer (my other obsession) for 5 minutes. Finally, I couldn't pass on a California roll. They make them without cucumber which I don't care for. They will add it for an up charge. I plan to order again, even when this thing has passed. It is comfort food for lockdown woes. read more

Hanaro Sushi was a great experience! The one thing I'd call out firstly is that on a few places online it looked like there might be happy hour options but this seems to not be the case as of May 2022, so attempting to scrub that off sites would be helpful. Now that's out of the way, we felt like hanaro sushi has made themselves the neighborhood option for delivery, as we could see sooo many bags in the 90 minutes or so we that we were in the restaurant. When we walked in at about 5:30 pm on a Friday evening, we were seated immediately and there was still ample seating options for others. I had the lychee cosmo, which I really enjoyed and recommend for anyone that likes fruity cocktails but don't want it very sweet; it was well balanced. Our appetizers consisted of the spicy tick shrimp tempura which was so good and spicy as the name indicates, and the well seasoned beef bulgogi tacos, which came with chopped tomatoes, onions, and cilantro. Next, we had the spicy tuna and spicy scallop makis--these tasted very nice and fresh. We also decided to get the lava roll, which came "action packed" with white tuna, scallop shrimp, smoked salmon, and lots of avocados and tempura flakes. This was a great sushi dish that could be shared between two people, or honestly gulped up by one hungry sushi lover. Helper tip--the restaurant currently has a free mochi voucher if you check in on Yelp, and I was able to use this voucher without any difficulties. We had a very nice waitress, and have no complaints on the service. Definitely stop by if you're in the Bethesda area with sushi cravings. read more

Disappointing! I hadn't been to this restaurant since it switched from Hanaro to Kusshi. While the fish was fresh and generous sizing on the sushi, this was ruined by the sushi rice that tasted like... absolutely nothing. No salt, sugar, rice vinegar. Rice is the key to great sushi so they really missed the mark. I need to find a new place for good sushi in Bethesda! read more

I had the worst sushi I've had for at least three years here. The fish itself seemed ok but the rice killed the three rolls I tried. The rice lacked seasoning and was mushy and lackluster. It was really quite disappointing. The menus on the website showing lunch specials aren't available. When we flagged for a server, he shrugged and said the owners didn't respond when told the same thing several times before. The inside ambiance is nothing to write home about and basic: a few wooden tables with a bar. I won't be back. It was a real disappointment. Delicious! They're not open for dine-in so we had to get take out and eat in the car, but it was a yummy meal! We got the shrimp tempura udon which came with 2 shrimp tempuras and an assortment of vegetable tempuras. The udon noodles were super chewy and the broth was flavorful. Highly recommend for a cold rainy day. We also got a Philly roll and a Phoenix roll which were good but did not stand out too much. We placed the order by phone and were told it was a 30-40min wait, so place your orders ahead of time! I don't even like sushi, but DAMN. I will never forget the taste of the fatty seared salmon in my mouth. It was like an explosion.. . The strawberry mojito was also very strong, but delicious and not overLy sweet. I definitely recommend the mojiTo! Our server Kelly was also super friendly and made sure to check on us frequently to make sure we had everything we needed. As an indecisive person, I appreciated all of the recommendations she offered. I highly recommend the salmon though. The smoked tAste was so strong in a good way! I also loved thE tempura udon- I'm used to udon being fairly bland because of the soup, but this had the perfEct amount of soy sauce without being too salty. The veggies and tempura were very fresh. I also reCommend the Phoenix roll! It had a burst of flAvor and a small kick to it. I can't say too much about the sampler, but my friend loved it! The miso soup portions are also extremely generous. I love Hanaro Sushi! They have the best sushi happy hour menu every day from 3:30pm-7pm with discounted sushi rolls, appetizers, and drinks! At 4:30pm on a Thursday, there were plenty of seating so we got seated right away. For $5 each, we got the tuna avocado roll and the salmon avocado roll. For $7 each, we got the Bethesda roll, rainbow roll, calamari, and wings. For drinks I got a lychee cosmo (Delicious but strong $7) and my friend got the gummy bear (so yummy and sweet but not on happy hour). We also got the dragon roll (not on happy hour) All the items we tried where delicious! You can't go wrong with any roll! Definitely one of my favorite places to eat in Bethesda. read more

I came because of the Groupon offer and overall I'm satisfied with my experience! The food was fine and the pricing was similar to other places. However, I'm not sure I would come back without the Groupon offer because the space was kind of not up to par. The atmosphere was a little awkward/unsettled. I think they got displaced because of covid? But I feel like maybe that should've been done before. I hope they can amp their interior design. I wouldn't recommend coming here for lunch unless you have 2+ hours to spare. The wait to receive our food was the longest I've ever experienced in sushi restaurant. We dined in for lunch on a weekday, and the restaurant didn't seem busy. But our food--which was only two entrees and nothing else--took over an hour to arrive. Staff never checked in on us, and we had to flag them down about our order. The food was fine, but I wouldn't dine in again. The different raw pieces did not have any fishy smell. The color of the raw fish was also very vibrant. I was very surprised by the cooked nigiri such as the eel, shrimp, and octopus. And they offer brown rice sushi which was some of the best I've had anywhere (I got the dragon roll and it was awesome!). The seared salmon belly and steamed shrimp dumplings on the happy hour menu (until 6:30 on Monday, when I went) were delicious, and the shrimp katsu curry (I also got it with brown rice) was SO GOOD. It came with about 6 fried shrimp and a good amount of rice/sauce, and delicious Japanese pickles. On the bright side: we ordered a 66 piece sushi/sashimi boat for pickup, and the sushi was excellent. Great going! But: We ordered from the website: $130, with miso included. When we went to pick it up, we were told that the price was $160, and it did not come with miso. We were told we looked at the wrong website. We showed them the price from the website we used. We were told "Oh, that is an old website." We received no apologie, and we were charged $160. When I wrote the manager, I received no response. I've attached a picture of the menu we used. We had used Hanaro many times, but we are not very enthusiastic about ordering from them again. read more

Obsessed with this sushi spot! Sushi is abundant in Bethesda, but Hanaro definitely takes the cake in a few areas: specialty rolls, quality of fish, and COVID approach. They currently only do take out and they go to great lengths to ensure safety during the pandemic. When it comes to the food, here's what I usually get: - Spicy Salmon: I order this every time because the fish tastes fresh and is mixed with tempura for a nice crunch at every bite. The spicy mayo at the top is delicious. A classic roll done perfectly! - Rainbow Roll: Many places have this type of roll as well but I love that Hanaro also adds avocado on top. I didn't have a picture this time, but usually it has tuna, salmon, and yellowtail on top for the fish - Shrimp Tempura: The shrimp is fried really well and I definitely feel the crunch when you eat it. Hard to mess this one up though! - Firecracker Roll: My absolute favorite specialty roll! Hanaro has the best version of this roll because they add spicy mayo dressed imitation crab and tempura flakes on top. - Wings: My boyfriend's favorite. The wings are similar to lollipop drumsticks and are tossed in a spicy sauce. I will warn you, this is actually spicy but it's delicious and a good type of hurt! Newly renovated and gorgeous. I've been coming to the place for years when Bethesda was still the go to spot to go out for night life without having to go all the way to DC. However, since I'm older and "wiser" I don't go out to get shwasted anymore. But Hanaro aka Kusshi Bethesda, is still a nice sushi spot to chill and have a drink. The sushi is still as good as it has always been and since it's now part of the Kusshi brand, the quality of fish that you come to expect is definitely present here even if everything around this area is starting to die off. I've always sat at the bar to have a drink and food so the bartenders are always so nice and talk to you if you want or leave you alone if you don't. So service is great! read more

I was excited about Kusshi coming to Bethesda, we like their one in Pike and Rose and in Tysons. We just had sushi, it was very good. Server was a pretty new, but did ok job, think they are still getting kinks worked out. Only suggestion, they have no non-alcoholic beer, almost all restaurants now have at least one. It was flavorful and had a little bit of everything--from shrimp to chicken to beef. It even had many different veggies. Though my favorite thing was that they used udon noodles, that are thicker noodles, and they were cooked well.
