I like the vibe of this place. I've been to Cedar Springs Brewery many times, but this was my first visit to Kusterer (not surprising, since it's still new!). German-style beer is not my favorite. That being said, I can usually find at least one beer that I like at Cedar Springs, and they fortunately had the same one here. Their pilsner is my go-to, which is interesting because I otherwise don't really care for pilsners. We had a group of 7 on a Sunday afternoon, and we were able to easily get a table. The space isn't huge, but the high ceilings make it feel much larger than it is. I really like the space. It's an atmosphere that makes you want to stay and hang out for awhile. They also had a live band, but they weren't so loud that it overwhelmed the place. It was interesting that the band sounded like an Irish group - like how musicians seem to just wander in to Irish pubs and start playing together. Didn't really fit the German theme, but I liked it nonetheless! There isn't table service, so you just walk up and order at the bar, which is fine. We didn't eat this time, but it appears they don't have a full kitchen, just a deli case up at the bar. While the beer isn't necessarily my favorite, I love the space enough, and can always find something to drink, so I know I'll be back in for a drink with friends soon. If German beer is your thing then you definitely need to check them out!

This place is fantastic! The ambience is great and the staff is super friendly. I like the original Hefeweizen but frankly all their beers are delicious. Also, the schnitzel Sammy is great as is the Döner Kebap!

One of the newest breweries in town, Kusterer Brauhaus is a German-inspired beer hall, which gives it a unique feel and atmosphere. It's a place to come and hang out, which is what we did recently with some friends. They have many traditional German beers, sangria, some cocktails, and several different beer drinks like shandies, etc. The hall is open and airy, with lots to see and cozy decor. They have a bunch of games to play, which makes it a welcoming spot to connect and relax with friends and family. I felt very welcomed and comfortable here, even though I'm not much of a beer drinker these days. The bartender was super nice and went through all the different beers and gave great recommendations. They don't have a full kitchen, but they do have a deli with dips, some snacks, and sandwiches. We didn't get any food this visit but heard the pretzel is really tasty. I had a shandy (ale with lemonade) and a pampel (ale with grapefruit), and both were refreshing and delicious. I'd love to go back soon and try more of the bier mixes while playing games with friends.

Let's go GERMANY! World Cup 2022

Went in to watch the Germany vs Spain World Cup soccer game. This was one of the bars in town hosting World Cup games, and what better way to watch Germany play than with an authentic German beer. We showed up early and snagged a large table in the front for our party. Was the perfect table right next to the bar and TV. This was my first time here, but over the years we have gone to cedar springs quite often. We love the German beer, and they have the best pretzels. I've tried every beer they have to offer, and the original Hefeweizen is my favorite. It has strong banana notes that are wonderful on the palate. If you like Guinness then they have a Irish beer, Eire, that is comparable. Thick and delicious. We had such a good time. The bartenders were amazing. They remembered our names every time we went up to the bar, and really seemed to be enjoying their jobs. Definitely recommend heading over for a drink and a pretzel. You won't be disappointed.

This is a tough one to review. I want to love this more than it's letting me. For starters, it is incredibly refreshing to find a brewery in Grand Rapids that is not dominated by IPAs. Their focus on German style brews allows for a plethora of malty goodness. And that alone will keep me coming back. Here's though where they fall a little short. We arrived on a sunny Saturday afternoon around 4 o'clock. Upon entering, we noticed the place was almost completely empty save for one other couple, the bartender, and two gentlemen seated near the entrance. The bartender greeted us and we decided to get a flight because it had been a little bit since we had last visited. I wish they would make one of their menu boards stationary. They display their beer menu on screens which rotates between the menu and different photos. Not super helpful when you're trying to read and the menu disappears for a few seconds. we got our flight and went and sat down near the windows. Everything we tasted was wonderful. My personal favorite was the Munich Dunkle my husband really enjoyed the Schwarzbier. Being that they were so slow the bartender was absent a lot from the front during our time. Regretfully at two different points customers entered (a group of six and later a group of five) stood and waited by the bar before leaving. (That's a lot of lost revenue, which is unfortunate because their product is good!) My other concern were the two gentlemen seated near the entrance. We were almost done with our flight when one of them came over and asked my husband for a cigarette. We don't smoke and told him that at which point he flipped us off and then he could he have a dollar for a cigarette. My husband again said no, but he offered to buy him a soda. At this point. The gentleman was a little belligerent, but with my husband's patience and kindness he grudgingly followed him up to the front where my husband purchased him a orange soda. At this point the bartender was back up at the front, and a few additional customers had come in and we're enjoying their beverages directly at the bar . Soon though both gentleman were back at our table again asking for a cigarettes or for money to purchase cigarettes. it was fairly obvious because they were not quiet. At no point did the bartender intervene and we ended up leaving with them following us outside asking us for money. It is commendable for a business to provide warmth and respite. However, once your customers start being harassed, I believe it falls on the shoulders of business to address the situation. Had my husband not been with me and this happened I do not know that I would've felt very comfortable or safe. So while the beer is good I think they definitely could improve awareness of what's going on in their establishment.

This doesn't represent the scant fills, I drank some first.

In fact, my kids laughed at my wife when she got a salad and wasn't overly impressed "Mom, why would you get a salad at a place with great burgers?!?" My thoughts exactly. The service is decent, the space is comfortable for a downtown spot on Monroe Center. When I visit, I focus solely on the burgers and I've never been disappointed. The 'Meat Wagon', topped with ribeye, ham and bacon just wants to cuddle your belly from the inside. The 'Otto Von Burger' topped with a fried egg and bacon is one of the best examples of its kind. The 'Alabamer' is great when you're craving pulled pork and bacon on your burger. If you just want a traditional burger, you have that option and won't be disappointed. Also, the loaded fries are solid, but personally, I would pass on the fancier offerings. Remember: Burgers over fancy apps and skip the salads and you'll be fine.

FOOD: I went with an olive burger with be try fresh and real ingredients. The burger itself was full of flavor; add the rest of it and it was phenomenal. The staff were friendly and we appreciated "The Library" filled with games and books. I was nostalgic and read Hunter's Guide to 1996 Michigan complete with a recommendation to stop at the now obsolete Pleasure Island Water Park. That used to be my absolute favorite getaway as a kid! We ordered arancini as a starter that came out tasting crisp like a tator tot, but the shape and taste actually reminded me more of a fried tteokbokki (Korean rice noodle) known for its deliciousness through its texture highlighting the spicy sauce. This would've been amazing had they had a nice gochujang mayo combo to dip this crispy treasure in, rather than ranch and pizza sauce. Next we tried the tikka masala pizza. Fun and inventive idea... much better than the naan pizza I had in Muskegon... however the sauce didn't taste as good as my homemade tikka masala base and though the pizza was tasty with varied texture, we found it somewhat lacked seasoning especially on the protein. If I were to construct it, instead of potato I would've had chicken, red pepper, cilantro, fresh avocado and pickled onion. Yum! To drink, I enjoyed a refreshing ginger Kombucha sourced from Walker Brothers in Nashville Tennessee. The kids loved their cheese pizza and cheese smash burger with fries and drinks. Overall, great first experience and would love to come back as it seems like they are constantly reinventing themselves with tasty morsels and brews. If you come, there is free parking in the back. If you love it here there is a $150 lifetime membership (not sure what that all entails but sounds special). Thanks 7 Monks, we will be back!
